Buses will be timed to meet services 78 and X78 in Brighouse to allow passengers to change between these services to reach Elland and Halifax. There will be no direct route to Dewsbury from Kirkheaton.Residents of Kirkheaton had a meeting at the Yeaton Cask on 31st January to discuss the proposed changes and their concerns for bus users. If you have any thoughts about the above please contact [email protected] or phone 0344 800 4411

YETTON POSTCARD circa 1906The following postcard was one of a series of hand-drawn semi-comic postcards depicting local villages, produced by Smith Carter [1864-1933]. (Other village examples can be viewed on the Huddersfield Exposed website). Carter was also a gifted amateur photographer producing many of the local photographs displayed in the Kirklees Images site.

“Yetton Pleasure Grounds” noted in the top right-hand corner were Spring Grove Pleasure Gardens on Paul Lane which operated between 1870 and 1930. They were widely advertised in Yorkshire alongside Hope Bank at Honley and Sunny Vale at Hipperholme. They had attractions for all the family including swing boats, donkey rides, hoop la, a dance hall, teas, shooting range and other attractions. In late Victorian times parties of children arrived from Huddersfield or Brighouse by canal boat, alighting at Colnebridge to make their way up to the ‘Pleasure Grounds.’The gardens were originally owned by William Armitage, a market gardener. Then William Whitfield took over in 1911, followed Thomas Glover in 1922 and finally Basil Moore. It was known locally as “Snotty Billy’s” after one of the Williams - but which one?Can you spot any other hidden stories in the postcard?

Costcutter’s ‘Local Pride’

Many Costcutter customers have been donating their spare change to Yetton Together Community Projects over the last 18 months. Steve & Sonia Singh, owners of the store on Moorside Road, chose Yetton Together as their local charity (but also hold collection boxes for other charities). Steve said ‘Customers often comment to us how lovely the flower

tubs and hanging baskets look around the village and are usually happy to donate their small change’. YT have benefitted in excess of £250 and Steve informed us that any further donations will be donated to YT ‘indefinitely’. Yetton Together would like to thank Steve, Sonia, Costcutter staff and customers for their generosity.

COMMUNITY CENTRE REFURBISHMENTOver the last two months parts of the Community Centre have undergone refurbishment. Heritage grey double glazed PVC windows have replaced the old metal ones along the frontage. The old kitchen has been removed - that space is now occupied by a smaller kitchen with access straight into the main hall and two new unisex toilets. One of the toilets is big enough to accommodate a wheelchair and is disabled friendly which means easier access for more people. Further alterations this year could include the removal of the old school toilets - to be replaced by another meeting room and a storage area.We thank the following organisations for providing the funding:Awards for All, The Foyle Trust Foundation, KBPC, Kirklees [Ward], Huddersfield Common Good Trust and West Riding Masons. Why not come along and see for yourself? – Yetty’s Coffee Shop is open Thursdays 2-4.30, Fridays 3 -4.30 and Saturdays 10.30 -12.30. You’ll be made very welcome.

continued from front page...Yetton Together support FoKL and feel that further contraction of libraries and library services harms the least fortunate. They are the ones less likely to have a computer at home, be in a position to buy books or afford to go out of their local area to access education, services and activities.Kirklees Council describes itself as ’digital by design’ which we believe is already discriminatory against people who don’t have access to home computers. If they are then denied access to a local library computer then effectively they are being further disadvantaged as they won’t be able to access most council and government services. For many non computer owners the cost of bus fares to and from a central library is not an option they can afford.Search ‘library under threat’ at yettontogether.org, for more informationMake your views known. Until April you can comment on the council’s ideas for cost cutting within the service by filling in a questionnaire available at the Community Centre or on line at kirklees.gov.uk/libraryconsultation.

Commemoration of Bicentenary of mill fire tragedy.Almost two hundred years to the day approximately 200 people attended a service at the parish church to commemorate the bicentenary of the tragic mill fire at Colne Bridge on February 14th 1818 when seventeen young girls aged between 9 and 18 died. The girls had worked throughout the night and were nearing the end of the shift when a misplaced candle on the lower floor started a blaze that destroyed their workplace and took their lives.*A plaque was unveiled by Kathy Butterworth, a descendant of one of the few survivors, Sarah Moody (11 years old when she escaped from the blaze). The event was also attended by the Mayor, Christine Iredale, originally from Kirkheaton. Other speakers included Cllr Judith Hughes, Chair of West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Authority.During the commemoration 17 candles were lit as the names of the victims were read out. Following the service members of the TUC laid wreaths at the Fire Memorial. An official of the Fire Brigade laid another on the headstone of the communal grave where the remains of 15 of the girls were interred. * Search ‘Colne Bridge fire’ at yettontogether.org to read more about the tragedy

KIRKHEATON PRIMARY SCHOOL SAYS “THANK YOU YETTON”Headteacher, Sam Gallant writes:-In April 2015 our school launched a paired reading project, as part of the “Giving Back to the Community” initiative, which involves adult volunteers giving up one afternoon a week to read with individual children. The sessions are designed to be enjoyable, relaxed and supportive and give children the opportunity to share, read and enjoy a wide variety of books. On average children improve their reading age by up to 9 months after a 10 week programme and grow in confidence. It has helped us to change attitudes to reading, showing the children that reading can be fun and also the different ways to work out words. The programme has grown in strength throughout the years and we currently have some amazing volunteers from our local community. However we are always looking for new people so if you can spare a couple of hours on a Wednesday afternoon, please contact the school office on 01484 548049.“I want to give something back to my community and being a volunteer in my local school means that I can help children to enjoy reading and have made new friends too” a Kirkheaton School Reading Friend
