Japan Ship Machinery and Equipment Association (JSMEA) attended the International Fishery Congress (IFC) in Vladivostok, Russia for the first time on Oct. 5-6, 2017. With financial assistance from The Nippon Foundation, Mr. Katsuhiko Fujiwara, vice-chairman, JSMEA/chairman, JSMEA’s Overseas Market Development Committee (executive officer, Yanmar Co., Ltd./general manager, Yanmar’s Tokyo Office) and Mr. Shuzo Ueda, leader of JSMEA’s Overseas Fishing Vessel Market Development Working Group (general manager, Marine Business Department, Marine System Division, Japan Radio Co., Ltd.) led a delegation of nine member companies. It was the third time that JSMEA had organized a market development project in Russia, with the previous two being seminars in Vladivostok and St. Petersburg, in 2013 and 2014, respectively.

The 12th IFC welcomed 770 attendees over two days (496 on Day 1 and 272 on Day 2), which attested to the popularity of the event. Many individuals in the public and private sectors came from all over Russia, including officials of the central and local governments engaged in the seafood business, representatives of fisheries organizations and fishing vessel owners. The attendees also included those from 15 other economies (refer to the outline of the 12th IFC below). JSMEA was a sponsor in the congress.

As part of the efforts that JSMEA launched earlier

in fiscal 2017 to develop markets for fishing vessels outside Japan, its participation at the IFC was to meet the growth in worldwide demand for fisheries products. The association aimed to collect information also on the fishing boat market and relevant policies of Russia, where plans were on the table to modernize the local fishing industry and to construct newbuildings to replace aging vessels. Furthermore, JSMEA sought to extensively promote machinery and equipment for fishing vessels made in Japan and relevant services provided by Japanese manufacturers.

At the opening session on Day 1, Mr. Noboru Ando, managing director, JSMEA, introduced Mr. Fujiwara, Mr. Ueda and member companies, giving the speech entitled “Innovations in the Fisheries Industry—Momentum of Effective Use and Conservation of the Global Sea Wealth”, which was the main topic of the 12th IFC. Mr. Ando emphasized that Japanese ship machinery and equipment manufacturers can contribute to the modernization of fishing vessels and technologies in Russia.

A roundtable session was held on Day 2, focusing on prospects for investment in and development of the fisheries industry. Mr. Fujiwara gave the opening address, followed by the attending members introducing the latest of their respective technologies and products.

JSMEA had a Japan desk near the conference hall on both days, and attracted so many visitors that members

quickly ran out of the catalogs they had brought from Japan. The association continued to work during a reception that it organized after the event to build relations with interested parties from Russia and market members’ products by distributing their catalogs. JSMEA had produced a Russian-language booklet to introduce the attending member companies, which was included in the package of materials prepared by the IFC and distributed to attendees.

Taking advantage of the trip made to attend the 12th IFC, a JSMEA delegation visited Mr. Pavel Shikov, new chief operating officer at the Far East branch office of the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS). JSMEA also visited Mr. Tatsuhiko Kasai, consul-general of Japan in Vladivostok, at the consulate-general. At that time, the consulate outlined the economies of coastal areas in Russia. Members asked consulate staff questions about local fisheries affairs and exchanged views on similar subjects.

JSMEA will report findings from its trip to Russia to discuss future related actions when convening meetings of its Overseas Market Development Working Group, Overseas Fishing Vessel Market Development Working Group, Overseas Market Development Committee, Global Strategic Plan Review Board and other in-house units.

Japan Ship Machinery and Equipment Association (JSMEA), accompanied by three member companies, took part in the International WorkBoat Show 2017 in New Orleans on Nov. 29-Dec. 1, 2017.

The International WorkBoat Show exhibits offshore support vessels (OSVs), towboats for cargo barges, patrol vessels, tugboats and fishing vessels operated in U.S. coastal waters and rivers as well as other markets. It is attended by more than 1,000 enterprises, including marine architects, shipbuilders and ship machinery and equipment manufacturers. In the past, engine, navigational instrument and other Japanese makers, including JSMEA members, had showcased their products and services at the event individually. In response to mounting interest in U.S. workboats among member companies, JSMEA decided to attend the show for the first time in 2016, making last year’s appearance the second time.

At the International WorkBoat Show 2017, JSMEA—which teamed up with Maritime Reporter and Engineering News, a U.S. magazine covering maritime affairs—opened a booth near a venue entrance, where there was heavy traffic from its many visitors. At the booth, printed media were distributed with information on members’ products for different categories, such as general commercial vessels, OSVs and fishing boats, as well as contact details. JSMEA also visited U.S. shipyards, ship designers and other participants to promote members’ products and

services. When visiting the Conrad Shipyard, LLC booth, JSMEA reunited with Mr. Scott J. Theriot, executive vice-president and COO, again marketing members’ products and services. JSMEA called at the shipyard in 2016, which won a contract earlier in 2017 to build a liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunker barge.

To enhance its relations with OSV owners, JSMEA paid a visit to the head office of the Offshore Marine Service Association (OMSA), a New Orleans-based organization of ship owners, for sales and marketing activities for members.

The JSMEA mission also inspected the engine room of a steamboat, which moves steam pistons to spin paddle wheels, run on the Mississippi River.

JSMEA decided to report findings from the International WorkBoat Show 2017 and the views it had gathered from exchanges with local enterprises when the Global Strategic Plan Review Board and other in-house units convene meetings, and to continue to hold discussions to develop markets overseas.

Low-grade waste heat utilization by ORC generator

Figure 1 ORC generator on board

Mitsubishi Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) generator converts low grade waste heat of main engine jacket cooling water into electric power. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Marine Machinery & Equipment Co., Ltd. (MHI-MME) has developed compact and highly efficient ORC generator for marine application in cooperation with Calnetix Technologies, a high-speed generator and magnetic bearing specialist in US. It can make electric power of 125kW (gross) by taking out heat of hot water from main diesel engine of about 10MW or larger.

The first prototype was retrofitted on a large container ship owned by Maersk Line in April 2016 as shown in Figure 1, and has been running

on board, proving high reliability, efficiency and maintenance free operation.

After careful study of the generator skid layout, new arrangement has been designed by MHI-MME (Figure 2), in order to reduce footprint, overall dimension and manufacturing / installation cost.

Integrated Power Module (IPM) the heart of ORC integrates single stage expander turbine and high-speed synchronous alternator. The rotor, consist of a radial expander wheel and rotor with permanent magnet, is supported by friction free magnetic bearings. (Figure 3) This enables no oil supply, low noise and fully closed circuit for working fluid.

Japan Ship Machinery and Equipment Association

Japan Ship Machinery & Equipment Association

Printed in Japan in February 2018

Japan Ship Machinery and Equipment Association (JSMEA) set up a new in-house working group (WG) earlier this fiscal year to consider developing fishing vessel markets overseas. It took the step in response to growth in recent years in demand for constructing fishing vessels in newly industrialized economies in Asia and other regions.

To find such markets, it is important to gather and exchange information. The Overseas Fishing Vessel Market Development WG intends to conduct market research and hold study sessions in the future to expand the sales of Japanese machinery and equipment products for fishing vessels not only in the Japanese market, but also in fishing vessel markets in other countries and regions.

WG members attended the International Fishery Congress in October 2017 in Vladivostok, Russia, where fishing industry insiders gathered from all over the country, to market said products. They also plan to take part in Nor-Fishing, an international gathering of fishery industries in Trondheim, Norway, in August 2018. The members hope to partake in a variety of activities, including getting a firsthand look at some of the Nordic nation’s leading-edge fishing vessels.

JSMEA sets up new WG for developing overseas fishing vessel markets

A list of Japan-made machinery and equipment for fishing vessels is also available on JSMEA's website.
