Scouting for Food is Back!

The Cub Scouts from Packs 287 and 371, together with Boy Scout Troop 2017, will be participating in Scouting for Food again this year in Spring Ridge. This is a national food drive organized by the Boy Scouts of America, and takes place in neighborhoods across the country. Last year, Spring Ridge residents donated close to 3,000 pounds of food for the Downtown Frederick food bank, helping to keep their shelves stocked through the winter!

The Scouts will drop off a plastic food bag at your house on Saturday, November 7th from 8am-Noon and will pick up food items left by your front door the following Saturday, November 14th from 8am-Noon You don't have to use the bag provided, or limit yourselves to just one bag! Please make sure your donated items are non-perishable and unexpired.

Also, If you have a flag that needs to be retired, you can also leave it out on your porch and we will pick that up too.

Please contact Monica Robyns at [email protected] if you have any questions. Thank you in advance for helping your Frederick neighbors in need!

Have you heard of Frederick's "12 Immortal Justices?".. The ones who, in 1765, repudiated the British Stamp Act? That's before Bostonians dumped King George's tea into their harbor -- Frederick was FIRST! And what better way to celebrate Frederick's unique place in American history than with beer, brewed by

Tom Flores of Brewer's Alley and Monocacy Brewing. Come join us Monday, November 16th, 7pm at the Visitor Center for a tasty history lesson from Tom, and hear how our local brewmeister created this historic brew. This is free and open to all Spring Ridge residents (over 21) but we would appreciate an RSVP to 240-285-1144, so we have enough chairs and tasting cups. Hope to see you there!

For this upcoming Holiday season, our Spring Ridge FAN Club is partnering with Mission of Mercy to collect donated toys for their clients' children. A box will be placed at the Visitor's Center to collect unwrapped toys, beginning Monday, November 16th. If you're planning on being present at the Repudiation Beer Tasting, bring a present for the children!

Friends and Neighbors (FAN) Club News

From time to time, we all can use a reminder about the ‘Obvious’. Living in a HOA has many benefits, the two greatest are the preservation/enhancement of property value and the great sense of community. In general, both of these are very important to most Spring Ridge residents. However, far more than we would like to admit, we observe homeowners who are lacking in their lot maintenance responsibilities and therefore must be lacking in their sense of community. Not keeping up with all of the maintenance a home requires is the same as saying, ‘I don’t care enough about my property’s value and I really don’t care about my neighbors either’. Most would never admit to this kind of mind set but the net effects of not properly maintaining one’s property says it louder than any words could say.

The following list contains the most commonly observed violations of lot maintenance/rules: Not picking up after your pet(s) both on common property and private lots. Exterior storage of trash cans, recycling containers, ladders and equipment. Lack of regular lawn maintenance, mowing, edging and de-weeding. Allowing green algae to grow on the siding of the house. Exterior painting and wood replacement. Putting out trash cans not in accordance with the rule of only placing it out the evening prior to pick up. Townhouse neighborhoods – not placing your household trash out in a proper container at the right time.

We realize that everyone if very busy with their lives but sometimes a simple reminder or nudge is all that we need to get back on track. Remember, it’s all about property value and a strong sense of community. PMP will post on the website the covenants that describes Lot Maintenance and the Rules/Regulations ONLY for your quick reference. We know that most of your Spring Ridge Covenants are buried deep in a box somewhere in storage. Visit www.springridgeonline.com.

Recreation Committee Meeting - Do you like planning events? Do you think you have some new ideas? If so, join the Recreation Committee! It is not a huge time commitment, and it‘s a great way to meet new neighbors. Join us for our next meeting on November 2nd at 7:30pm.

The Annual ACC Inspection will take place soon. The Covenants allow Management/Board to perform on-site property inspections. Richard, Victor and Nadena will be out on the property noting any changes homeowners have made to their property, both in front and rear yards. We’ll verify applications were submitted and structures were built as applied for. The only exception is storm doors that meet the requirements in the documents. The Board gave Management authority to approve applications for storm doors that comply with architectural guidelines. However, if a storm door has already been installed without having been previously applied for, it will be “grandfathered in” as long as it complies with the architectural guidelines. If you’ve made other changes but forgot to apply for them, please apply for them now. We will be requesting applications for any changes that currently do not have one. Visit www.springridgeonline.com or stop by the Visitor Center for an application. Due dates for applications and ACC Meeting dates are posted in the newsletters.

The Emerald Ash Borer Infestation (Information provided by ValleyCrest Landscape)

Not too long ago, many Frederick County landowners were worried about the damage that gypsy moths would do to trees. Now the concern is the emerald ash borer. As the name suggests, the emerald ash borer bores into ash trees, which eventually kills the tree. The insect is native to Asia and is believed to have come to the United States in solid wood packing material from Asia in 2002. The adult borers become active from April through August and can kill an untreated North American ash tree within a few years, according to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. The usual route for controlling an infestation is insecticides. Jonathan Kays, Natural Resource Specialist at the University of Maryland Extension, said treatment is the only way to save an ash tree when there are borers in the area. “If they’re not treated, they’re going to die. There are no ifs, ands, or buts about it,” Kays said. An infected tree will often have D-shaped holes in its bark, leaves that die off, splitting bark and woodpecker activity. When the bark of an infected tree is peeled off, the borers’ trails are visible. As for property owners who are also concerned about their trees, taking stock may be a good idea, Kays said. “Once those trees die, they start to fall apart very quickly. ... It’s worth it for people to see what they have and actually talk to a professional,” he said. Ash trees have been a popular addition to residential developments and streetscapes in the past, he said, especially because it is a hardy tree that has attractive foliage. “If (homeowners) want to get them treated, they should do it while the trees are still healthy and doing well,” Kays said. The Maryland Department of Natural Resources recommends only treating trees with less than 30 percent canopy loss, since trees that have lost more than that percentage may not recover. Trees up to 15 miles away from an infested tree may be at risk. Treatment options include insecticides injected into a tree’s trunk, a bark spray or soil-applied drench.
