to push your team over the top? I feel that we should be very competitive this year. I like our make up and experience. The kids have been together for a couple years in high school and many years before this so they really understand each other and our strengths and weaknesses.

We have Kelly Harper back and have added Hannah Hadden, who was

injured, and is back stronger than ever. With those two seniors and my two sophomores, Morgan Crocker and Destiny Bennett, who have been working hard in the off season, I feel we have a great rotation in that key spot.What intangibles will be needed to push your team over the top?Being able to rotate my pitchers and keep the hitters guessing and hitting throughout the lineup with no weak spots, so the teams have to pitch to our big hitters.

Our experience should allow us to apply pressure and force play a little bit more than last year.Weaknesses: Even though we returned most of our team, I have mixed up the positions to give us a little more depth. I hope it works out for the better.What do you think about your conference? We have more schools in the BCS Athletic Conference, so it will be interesting to see where we end up. We all start 0-0 so there is no favorite.

What have you seen from your team so far that has surprised you? The team’s work ethic and chemistry have been surprisingly good considering we have not been able to practice outdoors much.What intangibles will be needed to push your team over the top?To be able to practice outdoors, avoid injuries, and get most of our matches in so the team can develop to its potential. I just expect the team to give 100 percent effort all the time, as you cannot take the elevator to success. You have to take the stairs.

Some of our younger kids look like they are showing great potential.What intangibles will be needed to push your team over the top? How well we improve throughout the year will be important. Leadership. I have noticed a couple of my upper classmen taking some of the new guys under their wings and helping them learn the game. Attitudes have been upbeat and kids are excited for the season.What intangibles will be needed to push your team over the top? We will need all of the returning players to improve their scores a few strokes each, be more consistent than last year, and get some help from some of the new players. If we can be more consistent, then we should be able to compete in our half of the conference.

Coach’s name: Kate Coules — I was Brian Pruett’s assistant coach last year and due to him accepting the assistant principal role at Buchanan High School, I have taken over girls varsity soccer this year. I have big shoes to fill and hope to make him and the program he built proud. Years coaching sport/at current school: This is my second year coaching at Buchanan High School.Last year’s record/place in conference: Last year we won our conference, which was a first for Buchanan girls soccer.Key starters lost: Our key starters this year will be our extremely large group of seniors. These girls have been playing together for close to five

years now and have great chemistry on the field. It is great fun to watch. Key returning lettermen: Similar to my previous answer, these seniors played together last year on varsity and the majority of them were starters. Top newcomers: Nice big group of freshmen coming in, which I’m looking forward to building the program with. Strengths: Again, great chemistry of just knowing each other’s movements on the field. Weaknesses: CommunicationWhat do you think about your conference? Our conference has grown this year and the new additions will add to the great competition this conference has.

What have you seen from your team so far that has surprised? I have been very surprised by the amount of dedication and drive a large amount of these girls have. They are extremely excited for the season to begin. What intangibles will be needed to push your team over the top? One thing I am a big believer of is team bonding. I will be working a lot with team dinners, weekend tournaments and scrimmages, as well as team bonding nights. Understanding to still support each other even if the performance on the field wasn’t perfect; then being able to build each other back up to strive for perfection, I believe is the true meaning of being a team.

They have been the heart and soul of this track team for the past four years. Jack Ruggless, Spencer Thompson, Tim Lindamood, Dylan Williamson and Solomon Remmo. It has been hard to replace them and finding the leaders to fill their shoes has been tough.Key returning lettermen: Brooke

Wesner (Soph.) — placed in most pole vault competitions last year. Brandon Jerue (Jr.) — sprinter — one of our fastest athletes on the team last year. He will need to carry our sprint team this year.Top newcomers: Alexander Tobler (Soph.) — has a lot of ability and drive.Strengths: The athletes that make it to practice every day work extremely hard. They have a positive attitude and never complain about a workout. They also know that they have to pick up the extra points where our numbers won’t.Weaknesses: Our numbers are down a little again this year. It is hard to win track meets with such

a small team. Our girls team is growing but will most likely forfeit several of the relays due to the lack in runners. It is very difficult trying to recruit athletes anymore due to the number of spring sports.Male athletes are not coming out like they use to. Golf and baseball have good numbers this year, but the weight room is seeing more athletes in it than the past few years. Athletes are working out more and just not doing anything instead of participating in our schools athletics.It has been a rough start so far due to weather as well but all the schools are dealing with this dilemma so we shouldn’t be too far behind.

What do you think about your conference? Not sure what the new conference is or what the competition standards are.What have you seen from your team so far that has surprised? The attitudes are very good this year. Athletes are coming to practice and working harder than ever, and if practices are adjusted to push them a little more, they go with the flow and keep pushing through.What intangibles will be needed to push your team over the top? Track is a numbers game. We need parents and other athletic departments to encourage athletes to continue to be two- and three-season athletes.

South Haven.What have you seen from your team so far that has surprised you? Within the first full week I noticed the team is more cohesive than last year. This is my second year as the head coach of the Dowagiac girls soccer program, so most of the girls already know what is expected of them and have carried that knowledge on to the new players and freshmen. I have and will continue to stress teamwork at every practice and game. Our motto this year is “Row the Boat,” which means that we are all on the focused and one misstep can guide us of course.What intangibles will be needed to push your team over the top? This year is all about the continuing development of our program. All practices and games are learning lessons that will continue to make us a better team overall in the future.

We return four players from the five-girl rotation in the back and have two young girls ready to contribute. I also have 14 returning letter winners and 12 who have played major minutes.Weaknesses: We will be untested in the goal this year. I don’t have any girls with varsity experience in the net. Patience will also be a big test for us. Last year, we started games well, then didn’t score, lost patience and forced

the issue to try and score. It never worked out or ended well.What do you think about your conference? I think our conference will be improved from last year. Paw Paw joins the West and are a very good team. Most teams on our side return many good players and another year of growth, so our side should be much improved and competitive. What have you seen from your team so far that has surprised you? We are healthy for now. I have two girls coming off ACL tears, one girl from a broken leg, and one more who missed time with a broken arm. All are on track to contribute this season and

I hope will be back to form soon. What intangibles will be needed to push your team over the top? We will need someone to step up as the heart of the team. Someone who will lead with her voice, as well as play, and outwork everyone every day. My most successful years have included a player like this and seems to spark the girls to achieve more. We will also need a little bit of luck with the injury bug. We have had six season ending injuries to starters the past two seasons. This leads to a lot of time for underclassmen, but a lot of lost time for improvement from starters.

We are focusing a lot on team chemistry, accountability and working hard. Pitching has been a focus from day one and will continue to be. We have three pitchers getting lessons and have been working really hard. If they continue to progress, we could be a lot better than expected.
