We will tell you all about it in our next newsletter. Our new science topic is all about "Plants" and we have enjoyed identifying the flowers, trees and other plants in St. John’s playground. YEAR 4

YEAR 5

Year 5 enjoyed their NSPCC Workshop about 'Staying Safe'.

In Maths, we have enjoyed investigating what resources we could buy for 3 schools in Zambia, with a budget of £500. We used short multiplication to multiply 4-digit numbers by 1-digit numbers.

In the evening we made fossils. It was hard work softening and moulding the plasticine

We felt proud and exhausted when we were at the top of Malham Cove.

Walking up Malham Cove was fun but hard work!

We thought we’d never reach the top

The views were absolutely beautiful.

It was like the top of the world

We had a great time with our friends in Malham

It was exciting and fun to find out who we were sharing our bedrooms with.

We enjoyed making new friends from the other classes.

We went to Malham Cove, Janet’s Foss and Gordale Scar and learned that even Malham Cove had been a waterfall

We saw a peregrine falcon nesting in the cliff

face.

It was very quiet in Malham, with only the sound of the birds, sheep and a noisy cockerel to wake us up in the morning

YEAR 6

In History 6AW have used the QR reader app on the iPads to learn about the causes of the Second World War. It made our learning fun.

FRENCH

The French challenge that was set in the last newsletter was to make some crêpes, using Leila's (French assistant) recipe, take a photo and send it to Madame Roberts for some stars. Well done to the girls who took time to make crêpes at home. Bon appétit!

Lily Wynne and Claudia Bowen were the winners of the Year 5 'Masque de Carnaval' competition to celebrate Mardi Gras. French sound of the week

The French sound of the week is ch as in dimanche

Bon Anniversaire to the following girls.

MUSIC Lunchtime Concert This Wednesday we were enchanted with a superb concert by all our girls taking music exams this term. The girls played to such a high standard, clearly a lot of practice is going on! I was delighted that as well as our internal exam pupils we had girls who were taking exams outside school. We wish them all luck in their forthcoming exams, keep practising – especially those scales! I look forward to hearing the results. Music Festivals The Music Festival season starts this week with our Under 9 Choir and Year 2 Choir competing at the prestigious Harrogate Music Festival. We wish them luck. It will be a busy week for the Under 9s as they will then be competing in the Pontefract Music Festival on Friday 24th March. Sing your hearts out girls and have fun!

SPORT Hockey

Our U11 team qualified for the U11 North east in2 Hockey Finals on Monday 13th March 2017. The girls had a very tough group and battled superbly to finish third overall. The girls were very unlucky to go out after a tie on points - unfortunately we conceded one more than Hymers which placed Hymers above us in second position. The girls battled well and represented WGHS with pride and passion. Well done girls - we are very proud of you, such a fantastic end to a wonderful season.

Netball The U10 & U11 B netball squads had an excellent afternoon of netball against Westville House School, Ilkley. The U10 squad worked hard to mark their players in defence and to keep the ball out of the opposition’s shooting circle but weak passing allowed too many interceptions. The U11 squad were dynamic in every area of the court and moved the ball at pace to the shooting circle. Under 10 B squad lost 3 – 6 Under 11 B squad won 5 - 1

Players of the match: Lillie Wightman & Aaliyah Syeda Outstanding play from Hennie Gibson, Maddie Patel, Evie Pickles & Abbie Grafton

The Under 9 netball squad had a competitive afternoon of netball at the Westville House School festival. Throughout the afternoon, the squad played some fast attacking netball, moving the ball efficiently from defence to attack. Mia Coxon was outstanding in defence, intercepting many of the opposition’s passes and stopping the ball from getting into the shooting circle. Holly Biggin-Wilcox was a dynamic Goal Attack and shot accurately throughout the tournament. After 2 good wins, the team came up against a fast team from Sedbergh School. After going 4 – 1 down our players dug deep and managed to pull the score back to 4 goals all. Against Bronte House School, WGHS made a few silly mistakes allowing the opposition to win by 2 goals to 3. A win in their last match meant that WGHS finished in 3rd place overall, a creditable position.

Players of the tournament – Mia Coxon & Holly Biggin-Wilcox Results:

Richmond House School won 11 – 0

Westville House School won 2 – 0

Sedbergh School A team drew 4 – 4

Bronte House School lost 2 – 3

Sedbergh School B team won 8 - 0

Cross country

The Year 6 cross country squad competed in the Worksop College Cross Country Championships. In blustery weather, the mile long course took them across fields and through woods in the grounds of the College. Very strong opposition meant that the runners from WGHS had to dig deep and work very hard to maintain their pace and positions. Megan Rees was the leading runner from WGHS finishing in 14th place with Ruby Shone 16th, Lucy Rushby 24th, Lucy Crook 25th, Abbie Grafton 26th and Hannah Jessop 28th. Holly Bestwick, Niamh Barrett, Mia Crecraft, Anna Schofield, Flora Whitfield and Charlie Grant all finished the course in very creditable times.

Approximately 80 girls took part in the race from 13 different schools across the whole of Yorkshire. There is a full programme of Wakefield Schools’ cross country races when girls move up to Year 7 so keep running! Dance Girls in Year 5 and Year 6 are currently choreographing work for the Dance Showcase in Year 5 and the Dance Evening auditions in Year 6. Both events will take place during the games lessons before Easter. Girls who participate in Dance Club are also invited to perform at the Dance Evening as part of this club. The schedule of rehearsals and performances for the Dance Evening are as follows:
