One of the many goals of this program is to increase the number of students who are passing all their clas- ses. Although many factors are in play, there is little doubt that the program is having an impact on our students. The percentage of 9 th grade students who are passing all of their classes is much higher than any of the other three grade levels. We have work to do at all grades, but it is great to see that progress is being made. The hope is that at some point, we see students at all levels pass- ing all classes. There is more than a 25% increase in the number of students registering for AP and CITS classes next fall as compared to last fall. The message to students has been that challenging themselves to take higher level courses will pay off in the long run, and there is a greater likelihood of success in post-secondary en- deavors simply because students are taking these classes. I am proud of the students who are taking a chance, and I believe they will be successful. In just a few months, the class of 2020 will be walking across the stage for grad- uation. Shortly after that, a new group of students will be joining the high school as they transition from 8 th grade. Something that we have known for a long time is that the importance of helping students make connections and find their niche in the school setting. Some kids get involved in music, sports, dra- ma, or any number of clubs or activities. Being part of a group often helps stu- dents to have better attendance, grades, and a positive attitude about school. There may be clubs and activities that we are not thinking of at school that might be great for students. If you have thoughts or ideas in ways we can pro- vide different opportunities for students to get involved, I would welcome your input. Superior High School is a great place to work and learn. Senior Project This is the time of year the seniors begin to take a close look at and inventory the requirements for gradua-tion. One important necessity is to pass the Senior Project. It is time to realize they have only until the end of April to accomplish these things. Since they were invited to begin last May, this is not a surprise nor is it unattainable; it is just time to focus. There are only 4 more days for students to do their presentation for this school year and earn graduation eligibility; March 3, March 11, April 8 and April 29. Every student that did not sign up for a presentation date by mid-December was placed on one of the presentation dates. The class of 2021 will be presented with Senior Project information in early May and will be able to start the process of completing their projects at that time. Please feel free to contact Senior Project Coordinator Rob Scott if you would like to become a presentation evaluator or if you have any questions regarding the Senior Project at Superior High School. Attendance Superior High School is an excellent school. We offer a wide variety of courses and try to challenge students academically every day. One area we are making a very conscious push to improve on is school attendance. Students who attend school regularly are better prepared for both work and college. Poor attendance can sneak up on a student fairly quickly. A student who misses 2 days a month would be considered chronically truant, (that’s 2 days absent each month, 10 months of school = 20 days absent which is below 90% attendance). Imagine what an employer would say to missing a month of work. Wisconsin law states that a student must regularly attend school until age 18 or graduation. A student may be excused from school all or part of 5 days per semester (10 days total for the year). A student is consid-ered truant after missing 10 days of school (not counting medical excuses, bereavement, religious holidays, etc.). To help motivate students attendance SHS has started a policy: “Students must be attending school at a rate of 90% or better to attend our formal dances (Fall Ball and Prom).” We have also added that students will not be excused to attend state tournaments if their attendance rate is below 90%. Attendance Requirement for Prom : Students must be in attendance a minimum of 90% of the school days to attend the Prom. Prom, attendance will be calculated from September 3 through February 26. The following reasons for being absent will not be factored into the 90% attendance rate: ●Dentist or Doctor Appointments (provided the attendance office receives verification from the doctor). ●Illness (provided the attendance office receives verification from the doctor). ●Bereavement ●Participation in school activities ●Religious Holidays Guests are welcome at the Prom with the following stipulations: Prom The guest must be less than 21 years of age. The guest must currently be:

1. Attending high school or 2. A high school graduate and is currently attending a post-secondary institution (must pro-

vide verification form with signature from the post-secondary institution) or 3. Currently employed (must provide verification form with signature from the employer)

The Prom is open to students in grades 11 and 12. A Superior High School student in grade 11 or 12 may bring a guest who is in grade 10. The Prom is not open to 9th grade students. NOTE: Guests may be subject to a background check. Requests for approval of guests must be submitted in writing to the principal a minimum of two weeks prior to the dance. Approval must be granted before purchasing a ticket for the dance. The Prom is open to students in grades 11 and 12. A Superior High School student in grade 11 or 12 may bring a guest who is in grade 10. The Prom is not open to 9th grade students. We will continue to tighten and improve our attendance policy as we know students must be present in the classroom in order to receive the most from their education and be best prepared for whatever opportunities are next in life.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT TESTING 2020 Advanced Placement (AP) Testing is held every year during the first two full weeks of May. If your child is taking one or more AP courses this year, AP testing is required in order to receive the corresponding AP course credit at SHS. Any student who receives a three or higher on an AP Exam will have their exam fee reimbursed after the scores are issued and confirmed. Free or reduced lunch students will have their AP exam fee covered by the District. The AP Test pre-administration will be conducted in April before the May testing schedule outlined below to streamline the exam process on each test day. Students taking an AP exam should arrive at least 1/2 hour early (7:30AM or 11:30AM) to the testing loca-tion. (See below for the testing location for all group exams.) This time will be used to complete testing day pre-test information so actual AP exams may begin as soon as possible after the official start times listed below. Please contact your child’s AP instructor or Mrs. Sigfrids, [email protected] if you have any questions.

2020 AP Testing Schedule

Bus transportation will be provided only for the AP World History test on Thursday May 14. The bus will be leaving SHS at 7:30 and students will remain at UWS for the remainder of the day. Students driving to UWS or WITC for other testing dates will need to obtain a parking pass from the coun-seling office. More information will be shared with the AP students in April in regards to parking. Please contact Mrs. Sigfrids via email [email protected] if you have any questions.

FINANCIAL AID

This is the time of year parents sending their son/daughter to college need to fill out their federal finan-cial aid form. Parents, remember to complete your financial aid form using last years completed taxes. The free appli-cation for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is used to apply for federal student aid such as grants, work-study, and loans. It is also used to determine some state aid and financial aid offered by colleges and universities. Note: Many colleges give aid on a first-come, first-served basis, so the earlier you apply, the better.

Quiz Bowl

Students from 13 Northern Wisconsin schools battled it out on February 12 at CESA 12 in Ashland, competing for a chance to win trophies and bragging rights in the annual High Quiz Bowl Tournament. This four-on-four battle of the brains demands knowledge on a vast set of topics.

The first team is asked a knowledge-based short answer question from Academic Hallmark Company bank of many questions and they can either answer it or pass it onto the other team. Working as a team of four to come up with the answer but only have fifteen seconds to decide. If the answer is correct, they receive 5 points, if it is incorrect, they lose 5 point.

The team with the highest number of points after forty questions wins the match and advances. If a team loses two matches in the tournament, they’re out.

It can be a lot of fun and is a workout for the brain.

This school year, Superior placed 2nd for the season and placed 3rd at the tournament.

This year’s participants included: Jayden Sheffield, Ben Hintzman, Jordon Stangland, Pierce Hoyt, Ethan Blohm, and Sadie Nelson,

Here is the link to Fox 21 News coverage of the tournament in case you missed it last night.
