WELCOME TO THE G ILL BOOKS
CATALOGUE OF NEW BOOKS
Re:set
This spring we have books that will help you to take stock and restore your life to factory settings.
Organised and Slow at Work will inspire you to declutter, simplify and finally gain some control at home and at work.
Judith McAdam’s groundbreaking book The Source will help you discover the energy to turn your life in the direction you want this year.
Ireland’s most formidable doctor, Dr Eva Orsmond, is back with a straight-talking, no-nonsense guide to taking control of your health in Reverse Your Diabetes, and Kate O’Brien is here to show you how to GLOW from the inside out.
Then there are three absorbing real-life reads: the astonishing story of the postman whose secret addiction saw him gamble €10 million and lose everything – €1.75 million of that belonging to An Post; the story of the fateful meeting of Jason Corbett and Molly Martens, as told by his sister; and the shocking story of one forgotten woman – and countless others – from the Tuam Mother and Baby home.
We hope there’s a book here for you.

Two years ago author Aoife McElwain was burnt out. Fed up of being ‘bananas busy’ and constantly frazzled she had an epiphany and decided, ‘I have got to figure out a better way of working.’ She set out to uncover what was behind her feeling constantly on the go and created a new blueprint for work–life balance, which she now shares in Slow at Work.
The way we work has changed, and in our always-on culture, the cult of busyness and blurred boundaries mean that work and life can become seriously out of balance. Here Aoife provides the tools to help navigate this new world of work – not only to achieve career success, but to stay sane while doing so. If you are burnt out, anxious, feel like an imposter or are caught in a cycle of procrastination, this book contains all the advice you need to restore your balance and get back on track.

Hundreds of thousands of people in Ireland suffer from panic attacks and anxiety but many struggle to access any meaningful help for these conditions. Prompted by years of working with patients suffering from panic attacks and struck by just how common and debilitating they were, medical doctor and psychotherapist Dr Áine Tubridy first published When Panic Attacks in 2003. It has been a bestseller ever since – because her methods work – and this spring a new edition hits the shelves.
Grounded in years of clinical experience and research, When Panic Attacks helps makes sense of the suffering and is an important handbook offering hope for those trapped in a constant cycle of fear and panic. In an increasingly fear-driven society When Panic Attacks is more relevant than ever.

A heart-stopping ride with a dangerous compulsion beyond control, Tony 10 is the story of the postman who stole €1.75 million from An Post while he was a branch manager in Gorey, to fund a gambling addiction that began with a bet of €1 and rose eventually to €10 million, leading to the loss of his family and his home.
In Tony 10, Tony O’Reilly recounts the last-minute goals that destroyed him, the shots that hit the post and the times when he vowed to get out while he was ahead, only for those moments to be lost in another surge of adrenaline. This book details everything from the terrifying moments in a hotel room in Cyprus with his wedding money riding on the Derby, to his disappearance on the morning the fraud was discovered, the surreal three days spent on the run in Northern Ireland, and ultimately his arrest, conviction and sentencing to four years in jail.

On 2 August 2015, Limerick father-of-two Jason Corbett was savagely beaten to death in the bedroom of his luxury North Carolina home. His killers were his wife Molly Martens and his father-in-law, Thomas Martens. In a trial that gripped both the US and Ireland, the case that the duo had acted in self-defence – though they hadn’t a scratch on them while Jason suffered horrific injuries – fell apart and they were sentenced to over 20 years in prison.
Behind the scenes, Jason’s family were locked in a desperate custody battle to bring Jason’s children back to Ireland and away from the woman who had killed their beloved father and brother. With full access to Jason’s letters, emails, keepsakes and photographs, Jason’s sister, Tracey Corbett-Lynch, reveals for the first time the full and shocking story of what Molly and Tom Martens tried to get away with.

In 1946, twenty-six-year-old Bridget Dolan walked up the path to the front door of the Tuam Mother and Baby Home. Alone and pregnant, she was following in the footsteps of more than a century’s worth of lost souls. Shunned by society for her sins and offered no comfort for her pain, Bridget gave birth to a boy, who died at the home in a horrendous state of neglect. Her second child was once again delivered at the home, then taken from her and never seen again.
She would go on to have a daughter, Anna, but it was only after Bridget’s death – and in the aftermath of the explosive revelations that the remains of 796 babies had been found in a septic tank on the site of the home – that Anna discovered she had two brothers her mother had never spoken about. Was her brother’s body in the tank? Anna still does not know.
Through Anna, this book puts on the record the life of Bridget Dolan and all the forgotten women and children of the Tuam Mother and Baby Home.

Between 1845 and 1852, the population of Ireland fell by over two million, caused by a horrific famine that racked the country. While approximately one million people died of starvation and disease, another million fled the country in so-called coffin ships.
This book traces the history of that time and looks at the causes and the consequences of the Irish Famine, the worst period of Irish history. It also covers places around the country that have connections with the Famine, such as Strokestown House, the Jeanie Johnston Famine Ship, the Dunbrody Famine Ship, Skibbereen and Blennerville.

Blindboy Boatclub is one half of the Rubberbandits, Ireland’s foremost satirist and now the talented author of a collection of brilliant short stories. Published to acclaim in autumn 2017, the paperback edition of The Gospel According to Blindboy is due for release in summer 2018.
Powered by big themes and even bigger ideas, the stories cleverly question and challenge the complacencies and contradictions at the heart of modern Ireland. Whip-smart, provocative and animated by his unmistakably dark wit, Blindboy Boatclub is one of the most original writers to emerge in Ireland in recent years.
‘Demented, dishevelled and deeply surreal – Blindboy Boatclub’s book will shock and delight.’ Irish Independent
‘It’s not for the faint-hearted’. Joe.ie
‘You won’t be disappointed. It will take you to places unexpected’. Ryan Tubridy

Winner of the Bord Gáis Energy Irish Sports Book of the Year and the Éir Sports Book of the Year, in The Choice Dubs star Philly McMahon shares the story of his brother John, a heroin addict who died at the age of 31. The book delves into the contrasting lives of the brothers and how the opportunities presented to Philly through sport protected him from the height of the heroin epidemic in Ballymun.
As well as offering sports fans fresh insights into one of GAA’s most fascinating characters, The Choice acts as an inspiration for young people who might be at risk and families with a loved one struggling with addiction, as well as questioning how Irish society deals with addicts.
‘Philly McMahon should be placed on a pedestal and be a beacon of inspiration to all young sports stars in the country.’ The Irish Independent
‘Searing honesty’. The Irish Times

‘A H OUSE TO WHIC H THE
BEST OF I R IS H AUTHORS CAN
BR IN G T H E IR MANUSC RIPTS ’
When Michael Gill founded Gill in 1968, The Irish Times described it as ‘a welcome enterprise’ and hoped it would become a home for the best of Irish authors.
Since then we’ve been honoured to publish the works of great writers and experts such as Noël Browne, Garret FitzGerald, Tom Garvin, Éamon de Buitléar, Myrtle Allen, Susan Jane White, Francis Brennan and Matt Cooper.
We’ve been there in good times and bad, publishing the books you choose to read on every aspect of Irish life: from the 1960s bestseller Prayers of Life to How Stormont Fell; from Rachel’s Favourite Food to The Encyclopaedia of Ireland; from the heady high of The Pope’s Children to the popular reissuing of Soundings in 2010, when perhaps we all needed a bit more poetry in our lives; from Jim McGuinness’ powerful Until Victory Always and Irelandopedia, which celebrated every county in the country, to more recent bestsellers, Roz Purcell’s Natural Born Feeder, Jason Byrne’s Adventures of a Wonky-Eyed Boy and Kathleen Watkins’ Pigín of Howth. Each book, in its own way, captures a slice of life, a slice of the times we live in.
But it was really Michael’s great-great-grandfather who started our story. In 1856 Michael Henry Gill, then the printer to Dublin University, purchased the publishing and bookselling business of James McGlashan, forming McGlashan & Gill, which then became M.H. Gill & Son, then Gill & Macmillan and, in 2016, simply Gill. The bookshop – popularly known as Gills and referenced in James Joyce’s Ulysses – was located on Dublin’s O’Connell Street for 123 years until it closed in 1979.
Whether it’s printing, publishing or bookselling, we believe reading matters. We’ve always believed in Irish talent and we’ve always believed in the curious mind of the Irish reader. If we’ve managed to help produce something from one to satisfy that of the other, it’s been a good day at the office.
Thanks for reading.
