The Rocket Review Quarterly
Spring/Summer Edition
To All club members, It is now exactly one month before our annual show. I want to start by giving our condolences to our preregistration ac-counting volunteer extra-ordinaire, Margaret Straubinger, who just lost her mom a week ago. I know this is a trying time for her, and she is in our thoughts and prayers. Another piece of news came to me today that Montgomery College is starting to repave their parking lots starting with the one next to our show field. If I find that ours will be full of paving equipment the week of

Other than that, dozens of folks have preregis-tered (I don't have an exact count), the new blue t-shirts have been ordered, the awards are coming along great and we are still working on new stanchion signs, as last year's were mostly destroyed by the 3 rain showers we had. Goodie bag items are still com-ing in and we are trying to collect door prizes. This is a lot of work by a
The Capitol City Rockets is the Suburban Maryland, DC, Northern Vir-
ginia chapter of the Oldsmobile Club of America. The Capitol City Rockets
originated in 1989, and is currently operating in its 23rd year. We split
monthly meetings (currently) between Kilroy’s Bar and Grille off the Braddock
Road exit of 495 in Northern VA and Branded 72 BBQ in Rockville, with
one peer judged show co-hosted each year with the Metro Buick Club. The
club currently consists of 51 members, 30 from Virginia, 16 from Maryland,
3 in Florida, and 1each from DC and West Virginia. A membership form
is located in the back of this newsletter. One need not own an Oldsmobile to
join, and dues remain $15 dollars per year, payable by November the 1st,
either by check or using the PayPal button on our Hemmings.com website.
Current membership in the Oldsmobile Club of America is a requirement of
CCR membership, as we are required to submit club rosters to OCA for
yearly insurance coverage for our events.

Rocket Review Wins Golden Quill Award 3rd Year Running
The Capitol City Rockets—Who We Are
This past April, I re-
ceived the good news that The
Rocket Review Quarterly earned
its third straight Golden Quill
Award from Old Cars Weekly.
Portions of the article from
Oldcarsweekly.com is attached
to the right. It is a nice acco-
lade to both the club and my
small effort to put together a
meaningful newsletter (despite
the demands of my “other”
job that make getting the
newsletter together less timely
than I’d like). Thanks for all
of your contributions and, as
always, your interest in your
amazing cars!

What it takes to win the Golden Quill
Thousands of club publications were submitted during 2011 for the annual con-test. The purpose of the competition is to encourage a balanced, well-done publication that meets the needs of its car club while advancing general knowledge of collector cars and their history...(Editor Gerald) Perschbacher is amazed at the improved quality of layout and design that appeared in national and regional publications last year. “The quality is definitely being notched up higher with each passing year,” he said. “That’s good news for the hobby, since it means clubs — and owners of old cars — are trying to put their best foot, or best tire, forward.” In the award competition, categories are divided by size and page count of publications. Use of color and quality of paper also figures in….“Balance is so very important. Car club publications are beacons for members. Articles and photos from members, news that hits most or the entire club, technical articles pertaining to the make of choice, and good language skills plus enticing event calendars gain the most mileage for a publication and club.” He concludes, “The editor is an important person in a car club. He or she can set a creative and excit-ing pace for members who use the publication as their lifeline to the rest of the club. It’s clear when a club enjoys its publication. There is a wholesome pride you can sense by reading the blend of articles and enjoying the pictures. Publications that succeed in these factors give members the best of the hobby.”

what they did for you, contact information, and what you were pleased with. Pictures would be great also. This month I sent out two requests and got one review back (from CCR member Zaman Khan), so here it is:
As you may remember, I have been working on a full frame-off nuts/bolts restoration on my 1968 442 Convertible. I am somewhat optimistic that I may have the car com-pleted in time for the All GM Show. I do want to give Maryland Muscle Cars two big thumbs up on their work on my car. They have been meticu-lous in their detail to at-tention, addressing my concerns and doing great work. They can pretty much do anything on a muscle car with the ex-ception of interior and
paint work. To me the work on the chassis, en-gine, body, and mechanical was the best that I have seen. They also are very good at finding parts and fabricating parts for the body.
Here is my blog on my res-toration: http://www.cardomain.com/ride/3849129/1968-oldsmobile-442

Restoration Reviews — Scott Phillips/Zaman Khan
Page 3 The Rocket Rev iew Vo lume 23, I ssue 2
I was asked at a re-cent CCR meeting this spring to start soliciting business reviews of resto-ration or parts businesses. Everyone agreed that as we either seek to maintain or restore our Oldsmo-biles, that spreading the experiences we have had would be a good idea. My vision for this is that in issues over the next year or so that we would have at least one, maybe two, positive reviews of businesses we have tapped that provided ex-cellent customer service, great parts, superior craftsmanship, or that somehow or another made us happy with the money we spent. I’ve chosen purposely to focus the reviews on positive experiences, as I’m not real interested in receiving backlash from businesses that would be negatively reviewed, or publishing what might be one nega-tive experience someone had about an otherwise good shop. I’m sure if you’re like me you tire quickly of some guy’s rant in a forum or online post about what an awful time he had, etc. Plus, I’m a glass half-full guy!
In order for this to work, I’ll need mate-rial—a brief paragraph will work—stating the name of the business,

land Muscle Car in Hagerstown.

My editor’s review is for Qual
Krom in Erie, PA. Not cheap,
but superb work on some pitted,
tired, broken emblems (before).
The finished products. Beautifully re-
stored and you cannot tell that the trunk
emblem (bottom) was broken in half.
Nice folks to work with, too.

Spring Dust Off Cruise at Nokesville, VA
Steve Meyer brought out this new Cutlass he has been
working very hard on. He chose a special paint code
(the picture doesn’t do it justice), changed out the in-
terior and had rebuilt the engine.
Guy Fansler brought out his ‘84 Delta 88, which
rounded out a really nice cluster of Oldsmobiles in this
section of the cruise.
There were some unidentified
Oldsmobiles in the crowd (not
sure if this was Marcus
Thompson’s?), and this was
one of them. It had some
really nice paint, and a 455
badge under its Cutlass em-
blem (SX?). The Nokesville
Burger King hosts a Sat eve-
ning cruise every week from 4-
8 pm that draws hundreds of
cars.
My buddy Ken Prowell brought out his ‘65 Cutlass
convertible. It’s an all original Ken is currently work-
ing on. Ken talked to some club members and got
some tips on questions he had as he proceeds with
the restoration of this fine droptop.
We loved this all original, low mile, 4 door Buick
Electra 225. It was brought by a friend of a CCR
member, and we gave it our “Club Favorite”
plaque.

Another of the crowd that the Dust Off attracted, this
442 clone was built by a dad for his daughter. It had a
really sharp look, and ran great.
Another of the unidentified Olds at the cruise, this late
80’s 442 had the “Best of the 80’s” body styling, a navy
and gray paint scheme, and gold pinstriping.
An interior shot of Jim Stohlman’s
rare, pristine, low mileage 442 W-
30. Note the factory 8 track with
surrounding wood paneling appli-
qué, the stout 4 speed shifter, and
sweet bucket seat full console.
According to my ability to zoom
in, it looks like the car has almost
62K original miles on it—but it
sure looks less than that!
Old CCR friend Paul Fredrick, who lives and restores
Oldsmobiles out in Warrenton, VA, brought out his
Ralleye 350. As you can tell from the picture, things
got pretty packed as the weather approached 70 de-
grees in early April.
Gary Sutherlin brought out his warhorse original
‘73 Cutlass that has made cross-country journeys
several times over, without a whole lot of major
maintenance over the years.

Joe P, Toby T, and Scott P then drove
up to the Mt. Airy Jimmy Cones cruise,
where we saw...
This all original 1963 Turbo Jetfire,
purchased in MD in ‘63 new and
owned now by the original owner’s son
And this black on black ‘73 Hurst
Olds. With the hood louvers, vinyl
top, and swivel seats, pretty slick!
The Sully Plantation show in Chan-
tilly, VA was on Father’s Day. This
smooth ‘59 LeSabre looked great.
The metallic blue paint on this 442
really popped in the warm sunshine of
the show field.
I believe this 442 W-30 convertible is
one that Paul Fredrick has been work-
ing on. It looked terrific.
We held our CCR picnic at Owen
Griesemer’s in Middletown, MD.
Toby Turpin’s ‘96 and Joe Pada-
vano’s ‘62 wagon are pictured.
Steve White and his wife cruised out in
their newest purchase, a gorgeous mid-
50’s Chrysler.
Greg Grant joined us in his original
Cutlass S convertible he is working on.
We love a good project!

A little tough to see, but that’s a 4WD
hearse in the middle of this picture out
Jimmy’s window!
Late sixties Chevy Impala with the ter-
rific green paint mentioned in the arti-
cle.
Late 60’s Nova with a screaming or-
ange paint job and body length flame
treatment.
Really nice fastback styling and
gorgeous deep red pain on this late
40’s GM.
Lots of customized rides with lowering
kits and oversized rims in OC. Custom 50’s trucks were plentiful.
Ocean City Classic Cruise Highlights—Jimmy Ford
The OC car show 2012 was the biggest and best car show that I have ever attended, although I am new to the circuit . As you can tell from some of the pics, there were so many beautiful cars and trucks from all genera-tions that it was really hard trying to stay focused on any one vehicle. It was totally amazing! I could barely close my mouth for any extended period. At every glance, there was something different that swallowed your attention.
Not pictured and I do hate that I did not get the pic of this one truck, a Ford 3500 I believe. It had three doors on each side and tires that came to my waist. This truck was so huge and got so much attention that it was in a class by itself. Another amazing vehicle that warranted lots of attention was this hearse with the same type of tires, as large as you have ever seen. When it parked, a couple guys exited and had a step ladder to assist this lady that was getting out. A picture perfect moment! (see picture above)
My favorite car was the pic I sent of the green 1966/67 Chevrolet impala. The color was just awesome! Hopefully, some of you can join me next year because I definitely plan to attend this event again in 2013.

Come to a Meeting! Drive Your Olds!
A sunny March meeting brought out everyone’s
Oldsmobiles. Toby Turpin’s 1996 LSS is in the back-
ground, while this really fine original Cutlass coupe
came out for the first time. I’m missing identification
on whose it was, so email the editor and let me know!
Another part of our meetings is always a little trouble
shooting. There’s usually a dilemma someone’s trying
to work out under the hood. Here, we look at Louis
von Guggenberg’s convertible engine.
This meeting on the Virginia side
at Kilroy’s was well attended (as
most are there). Food is good,
conversations are car-oriented,
and what else could you ask for?
On the MD side, we meet at
Branded 72 BBQ, which serves a
wicked cafeteria style buffet. Our
monthly meetings start at 1:30 pm.
Everyone took advantage of the near 70 degree tem-
peratures and dropped the tops on their convertibles.
I’m fairly sure this sweet example was driven in by
Marcus Thompson.
I don’t know about you, but to me that’s a pretty
cool lineup from the rear. Get to a meeting this
year—especially when the weather cooperates!

Congratulations to Steve White, who re-
marked, “ I (and my ‘53 Olds) was at the
AACA Grand National in Shelbyville, TN,
hoping to win an award. Considering the
“investment” I made in this trip, it was es-
sential that I bring home something and I
did… or at least Merry did. (Merry is what
we call our Olds.) We got a 1st place win and
a Grand National trophy!” Awesome, Steve!
