BY MISTY SHAWThe Springtown Area Cham-

ber of Commerce’s Woman of the Year title has been awarded to Michelle Deweese for 2015.

“Well, there’s a lot of people in Springtown who deserve it more,” Deweese said of receiv-ing the award.

Chamber Director Amy Walker honored Deweese at the Chamber banquet last Sat-urday.

“For those of you who know Michelle, even a little bit, you know that she is not at all com-fortable in the spotlight,” Walker said at the banquet.

“But Michelle is very deserv-ing of this recognition. She is a wonderful, strong Christian woman with a heart as big as Texas.”

Deweese has been an admin-istrative assistant at the Cham-

ber since 2009 and said she en-joys her work there.

“I like working at the Cham-ber because I’ve lived here most of my life, and I know a lot of the business owners that have been here for a long time,” she said.

“Plus I get to know all the new business owners, and I get to work with the schools, and the city and the county, and I like doing all the events. So it’s a re-ally fun job.”

Though she was born in White Settlement, Deweese has long called Springtown home, having settled here with her husband of 29 years, Doug De-weese, assistant director of field operations for Tarrant County Precinct 4.

The couple has two grown children, Dalton and Mallory.

Deweese and her family are

proud members of Hilltop Fam-ily Church, where she’s been ac-tive.

She also worked at the local women’s shelter until it closed a few years ago.

“I used to be really involved in the Liberty Lighthouse shelter before it closed, and more in-volved at the church, but lately it’s just been the Chamber,” De-weese said.

And that keeps her plenty busy, working with local busi-nesses, public officials, and vari-ous non-profit entities through-out the area.

“She works tirelessly on every event at the Chamber and many other events in the community,” Walker said of Deweese.

“She is committed to the bet-terment of our community and demonstrates this daily through her significant contributions.”

Deweese remains dedicated to her community and her service to it.

“The Springtown community

is special to me,” said Deweese. “It’s a blessing to see people fulfill their dreams by starting a business.”

BY MISTY SHAWWhen you're really hungry for

a good hamburger, there's just nothing quite as satisfying as sinking your teeth into a big, juicy, hand-made burger.

Next time the hankering hits, head on over to B and B Old Fash-ioned Burgers on the square in Springtown, where you can get yourself a really, really good burger.

The lo-cal spot was named Busi-ness of the Year by the Springtown Area Chamber of Commerce.

Owners Brent and Barbara Truett said they were thrilled to learn they’d won the award this year.

“It’s exciting,” Barbara Truett said. “We were really surprised because we just didn’t think that we were quite big enough or had been in business long enough, but we’re very, very happy that we were looked at that way.”

“It was a total surprise,” Brent Truett added and then quipped, “How much money do we get?”

B and B first opened in the summer of 2013, and by March 2014, they were able to relocate across the street to the bigger space they currently occupy, which has seating for 72 people in a historic setting downtown.

“We’re doing well,” Barbara Truett said. “It’s not an easy business, but it is a fun, reward-ing business.”

As the couple was retiring from the corporate world a few years ago, Brent Truett got the idea to open a burger joint in Springtown after they’d visited Barbara’s brother here.

“We wanted to do something different,” said Barbara. “Nei-ther one of us had been in busi-ness before as far as restaurants, but we thought that it would be

BY CARLA NOAH STUTSMANDennis Samples isn’t just a

great all-around guy – his peers at the La Junta Volunteer Fire Department often look at him like a brother firefighter rather than their captain.

That’s according to LJVFD Chief Tony Scarlato, who also said the department’s Firefighter of the Year is simply an easy guy to get along with.

“Dennis runs about 80 per-cent of our calls each year, and if he misses the truck, he mans the station until it gets back and helps put it back into service,” Scarlato said.

He added that Samples is just as happy doing the less desirable tasks as he is the more exciting ones.

“Anything you ask of him, he’ll get done. He’s all about the department and the community,” Scarlato said.

Samples grew up in the Oak Cliff area of Dallas but after col-lege, he made his way to Spring-

town. Not long after that, he was ap-

proached about joining the fire department.

He did, and says he fell in love with it.

That was in 1999.Since then, Samples has

earned his Emergency Care At-tendant and Basic Firefighter certifications.

He and his wife have been married 19 years and have three daughters – two are college graduates and the youngest is a college sophomore.

Samples also works full-time for his father’s business, Tom Samples Pest Control.

And while he says he is both honored and humbled to be chosen for the award, Samples doesn’t believe he deserves it.

“We’re a team – we do train-ing together, when we get a call, we go together, and we watch each other’s backs,” Samples said. “One person can’t do it without the rest.”

Springtown Middle School Assistant Principal Ronda Ribble was chosen as the 2015 Educator of the Year by the Springtown Area Chamber of Commerce.

“I know how many outstand-ing educators there are in this school district, and the fact that I was selected makes this such an honor,” Ribble said.

She has dedicated her 31-year professional career to the middle and high school students, teachers, and administration of Springtown Independent School District.

Ribble has served as a seventh grade Life Science teacher, high school assistant principal, direc-tor of the Alternative Learning Campus (YALE and ACE), and as the district textbook coordina-tor.

A graduate of Peaster High School, Ribble earned her asso-ciate degree from Weatherford College and graduated from Tarleton State University with a Bachelor of Science in Educa-tion in 1984.

She received a Master’s de-gree in Health Studies from Texas Woman’s University in 1993 with an emphasis in drug and teenage pregnancy preven-tion.

In 1996, she received her mid-management certifica-tion.

Ribble found her niche work-ing with at-risk youth and mid-dle school-aged students.

“There is so much energy around young adolescents,” she said.

“The challenge is getting it moving in a positive direction. Once that happens, there is just no end to the possibilities of what they can accomplish.”

Ribble often finds herself working with the children of those that she taught at the be-ginning of her career, which spans two generations.

“Many former students return to share their accomplishments with me,” said Ribble.

“I have former students who are teachers and coaches, pilots

Ribble named No. 1 teacher in Springtown

and business leaders, doctors and nurses, and various other occupations.”

In 1994, she was named to Who’s Who among American Teachers and she was honored as a United States Achievement Academy’s All American schol-ar in 1996.

In 2006, she received a Texas Star Achievement Award from the Greater Fort Worth Com-mercial Real Estate Women for being an Outstanding Educator and Mentor.

Ribble “consistently strives to provide the best possible educa-tional opportunities for the stu-dents.”

"I have worked with many wonderful people in this district and community, and I am grate-ful for the opportunities I have had to work with some awesome kids,” she said.

SPRINGTOWN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

BY MISTY SHAWThe Springtown Area Cham-

ber of Commerce has awarded Ron Lang the title of Public Works Employee of the Year.

Lang, who works behind the scenes as a plant operator for the City of Spring-town, received his award at the annual Chamber ban-quet March 28.

“Ron came to us in No-vember of 2012, and I can say with all my heart that he is genuine – and in Texas, that’s a good thing to be,” said Melvin Webb, City of Springtown public works direc-tor.

“He’s a genuine friend – a genuine hardworking, selfless employee who jumped into the water department – and when I say jumped in, I mean he liter-ally jumped into a mudhole.”

Webb said Lang was recently

Significant improvements to the city’s wastewater system, which Lang currently oversees,

came online in April of last year.

“After the recent renova-tion of the sys-tem, Ron has taken over the duties out there and has got everything up and running, and we thank

him very much for being there,” Webb said.

Lang expressed gratitude for his team of co-workers at the city.

“I just want to say thank you to Melvin and Doug Hughes for giving me the opportunity out there,” Lang said.

BY MISTY SHAWIt’s official – local business

owner Robert Moss has been deemed Man of the Year by the Springtown Area Chamber of Commerce.

The honor came as a com-plete surprise to Moss, a physi-cal therapist who owns MOSS Re-habilitation Cen-ter in Spring-town.

“I was very surprised – I told them to make sure they recounted those votes,” Moss joked. “I was certainly not expecting any-thing like that; definitely very

shocked and honored to win this, so that’s pretty cool.”

Hailing originally from San Antonio, Springtown’s newest Man of the Year attended thera-py school at Texas Tech in Lub-bock in 1995, where he met his

wife, Judy.They married

in 1998 and re-located to North Texas; they have two children, Sydney and Brady.

Sp r ing town has been an ideal place for Moss to run his clinic, which

opened here nearly a decade ago.“I’ve been here almost nine

years,” Moss said, “and I think

we’ve got a pretty good reputa-tion – I end up seeing friends of friends or (their) relatives.

“Having grown up in a large city, I don’t know that I would have the same appreciation for San Antonio that I do for the small city, just because the peo-ple come together and embrace what you’re trying to accom-plish, so it’s pretty neat.”

Moss said his business has benefited greatly from the sup-

port of both the Chamber and the local community.

“The Chamber has been, I think, instrumental in develop-ing the business and helping to get the word out – it’s a great or-ganization,” he said.

“The people here are just the salt of the Earth – they’re great people, very welcoming, very supportive of the business and of the things that the Chamber does, as well.”

Moss almost established a physical therapy clinic in Southlake years ago, but in 2006, after developing good re-lationships with local doctors, he chose Springtown instead.

“We live in Aurora, and I was working in Decatur at the time, and I was actually getting refer-rals and seeing patients from Dr. McDaniel,” Moss said. “I knew “Nine years

later, we’re still going.

there wasn’t a clinic here in Springtown, and that was some-thing my wife, who is an occu-pational therapist – we wanted to open a practice.

“So we decided, well, let’s look at Springtown, and we rolled the dice, and nine years later, we’re still going.”

Moss earned his Doctor of Science from Tech and re-ceived his certification as an Orthopedic Clinical Specialist in 2007.

An avid cyclist, Moss can be found either riding his bike or spending time with his family when he’s not busy helping pa-tients at the clinic.

“PT is going along pretty well for us,” Moss said. “Even coming from San Antonio, I still like that small-town feel. I thought this should be a pretty good fit, and it’s been fantas-tic.”

75 YEARS SERVING AMERICA

BY CARLA NOAH STUTSMANAlmost everything you’d want

to know about the Springtown Area Chamber of Commerce’s Organization of the Year can be summed up in its name: Out-reach of Love Church.

The church, located halfway between Springtown and Azle at the corner of East Highway 199 and Jay Bird Lane (FM 2257), is widely known in both towns for several ongoing, local ministries that help countless families and individuals right where they live.

The husband-and-wife team of Gary and Shannon Veazey has served OLC as lead pastor and worship pastor, respectively, for the last 18 years, and say that “if it’s in God’s will, we hope to retire here.”

OLC’s Saving Grace Minis-try is both a pregnancy resource center and a family outreach that offers diapers, clothing, car seats, furniture and even preg-nancy testing for young mothers and families in need.

The Azle Walmart donates significantly to Saving Grace, which meets on Tuesday eve-nings each week. Shannon said Walmart is a partner in the min-istry that’s very much appreci-ated.

Saving Grace also offers an-ger management classes and parenting classes, often working with families referred by Parker County Child Protective Ser-vices.

“When they have families who want to get their children back, and want to do what’s right, they can take the appropri-ate classes through OLC,” Gary Veazey said. “Hudson and Ra-chel Bailey lead that ministry, and it’s an avenue to minister to people who are often broken and hurting.”

Other ministries at OLC in-clude its Holy Harvest Food Bank, which is supplied by the Tarrant Area Food Bank in Fort Worth.

“Our food bank covers this whole area, and we can occa-sionally reach outside the area, as well,” Shannon said.

OLC’s Agape Family Ministry works with Springtown schools and other groups to provide

clothing of all sizes, furniture, and household items to families who’ve been victims of fire or other disasters as well as fami-lies in need for other reasons.

“It’s incredible the amount of clothing and other items that have been donated to this minis-try, and it’s such a blessing when

a family has a need,” Shannon said.

Another ministry provided at OLC – a very popular one, in fact – is its GED program which meets from 5-8 p.m. each Wednesday.

That program always seems to be full, and now takes up three

classrooms in the church. In every case, the outreach

ministries at OLC offer opportu-nities to minister to people who need help – whether it’s to feed their family, learn to be a bet-ter parent, or better themselves practically or spiritually.

“And that’s really what OLC

is all about,” Veazey said. “We are compassion-driven, but lega-cy-oriented,” he explained.

Shannon agreed, saying it re-ally does get back to the church’s name.

“It’s the truth. It’s who we are.

We are compassion, and it ex-udes out of everybody that leads here and works here,” she said. “We all know it’s the one goal and passion we have together.”

The Veazeys are originally from Plainview and attended Bible College in Springfield, Mis-souri while also serving as youth pastors.

Then they pas-tored youth at a church in Ala-magordo, New Mexico before becoming associate pastors and then moving to Tucumcari, New Mexico.

Their first senior pastor as-signment – at Outreach of Love Church – came when the couple was in their mid-20s.

The church has accomplished much under the Veazeys’ leader-ship, but there’s more to be done.

For instance, Gary Veazey spoke of OLC’s desire to build a Compassion Center on 10 acres

“The ministries have grown so much, and it takes a lot of space to store everything,” Veazey ex-plained. “We hope to someday build a Compassion Center to house all our compassion min-

istries. It’s our dream.”

OLC is also making plans now for a “Love Your City” campaign dur-ing September, when church members will wear special shirts as they

volunteer for cleanup and other projects in both Springtown and Azle.

They’ll also be involved with Springtown’s Wild West Festival and Azle’s Sting Fling Festival and are looking for additional ways to help the people in both cities.

“We just want to serve, and to love people,” Veazey said.

His wife added “Love always wins.”

BY MARK K. CAMPBELLIn an emotional moment at the

annual Springtown Chamber of Commerce banquet, town icon Johnnie Conway's name was added to the Hometown Heroes plaque.

Chamber Director Amy Walk-er teared up when making open-ing comments about the late Conway.

“We enjoyed the days he would drop by the Chamber of-fice for a quick visit, and we miss those visits terribly,” she said.

Walker praised Conway for immersing himself in the com-munity and taking part in a bevy of chamber-related activities.

“I miss him, but I know he's happy in heaven and that makes me smile,” Walker said.

Late pastor’s name added to exclusive rosterDoug Deweese, an elder at

Hilltop Family Church where Conway was senior pastor, spoke about his long relationship with the honoree.

A slide show displayed the myriad events and activities Conway took part in through the years in Springtown.

Some photographs showed the pastor decked out as the Tin Man from The Wizard of Oz and as Santa and the Easter Bunny.

Deweese said, “Have ya'll ever had anybody that you took for granted, somebody that you thought would always be there for you? Someone who was hap-py all the time, easy to be around and to talk to?”

That was Conway, Deweese said.

The pastor made himself available to help where needed.

“He never met a stranger,” De-weese said, adding that Conway always thought about what was best for the community – and he never sought any sort of recogni-tion for it.

“It's nearly overwhelming to think about all the people he helped and touched,” the church

elder said.Conway was a member of the

Lions Club for years and also coached youth sports. “He loved working with kids of all ages,” Deweese said.

The busy pastor served a term on the city council and sat on a transportation committee.

Deweese said Conway was always at the Chamber’s annual

All-American Bike Rally and was so involved in the children's area at the Wild West Festival that the site is named after him.

Conway was also regularly in-volved in the Chamber's annual clay shoot fundraiser.

And he seldom missed a Chamber luncheon.

Deweese said Conway worked to gather area religious leaders and that effort eventually result-ed in the annual National Day of Prayer in May in Springtown.

“John Conway kept his ear to the ground, trying to find people who needed the touch of Jesus in their lives. He had a service heart,” Deweese said.

Afterward, the Conways – wife Cindy, children Jennifer and Brandon, and daughter-in-law Sha – came forward to ac-cept the honor.

The plaque, which resides at the Chamber office on Main Street off the Square, contains four other notations.

In 2013, three names were etched on the award: Nancy Brown, Steven Dauenhauer, and D.D. Bledsoe.

Last year, Tommy Frantom was enshrined on the plaque.

And now, Johnnie Conway – for all the good he did for Springtown – will forever be re-membered as a Hometown Hero.

BY NATALIE GENTRYWhat exactly is the Judy

Smerud Spirit of Springtown award?

The 2013 Judy Smerud Award winner Pastor Johnnie Conway summed it up perfectly when he presented the award to Marcia Garcia in 2014.

“This award is for someone who exemplifies a sense of com-munity pride through involve-ment and sponsorship of com-munity projects,” Conway said in 2014.

“People like this don’t do it for

the recognition; they just like to serve people.”

Now, as a presenter herself, Garcia was able to highlight these qualities in this year’s re-cipient – Darlene Pennington.

“There is a whole list of rea-sons why Darlene is standing here,” Garcia said.

“She’s a lifelong resident of Springtown who graduated Springtown High School in 1976.”

Garcia noted that Pennington Darlene Pennington (left) accepts the 2015 Judy Smerud Spirit of Springtown award from Chamber Director Amy Walker (center) and last year's recipient Marcia Garcia. Photo by Carla Noah Stutsman PLEASE SEE AWARD, PAGE 17.

Terrell is named Springtown VFD’s premier firefighter

The Springtown Firefighter of the Year says he volunteers be-cause he’s enjoyed helping peo-ple since he was a child.

Recently promoted to lieuten-ant of the Springtown Volunteer Fire Department, Jesse Terrell says it helps that his employer, the Texas Department of Trans-portation (TxDOT) is supportive of his efforts.

He’s been with the depart-ment for about 18 months, but Mike Ellis, Assistant Chief of Parker County Emergency Ser-vices District 1, who presented the award during the Spring-town Area Chamber of Com-merce’s annual awards banquet Saturday, March 28, Terrell’s leadership skills were quickly recognized by others at the fire station.

“He became certified as an Emergency Care Attendant (ECA) in May 2014 and is cur-

rently taking classes in an on-line fire academy,” Ellis said. “He’s working toward his basic firefighter certification from the Texas Commission on Fire Pro-tection.”

Terrell went to school at Azle before graduating from Jacks-boro High School.

He is married, and he and his wife have two daughters.

“I was really surprised and ex-cited to learn I was chosen for this award,” Terrell said.

has been married to her husband Lee for 38 years and they have two sons, Nic and Chase.

After spending 17 years in the banking industry, Pen-nington made the transition to the Springtown Indepen-dent School District and never looked back.

She is now in her 22nd year as the administrative assistant to the superintendent and the secre-tary to the board of trustees.

In addition to the many jobs she does for the school district and the many awards she has received throughout the years, Pennington has volunteered her time to organizations such as Springtown Shares and Cares, the Springtown PTA, Project Celebration, and the Springtown Athletics Booster Club.

She is also a member and Bi-ble school teacher at the Spring-town Church of Christ.

“Now Darlene doesn’t un-derstand why she is getting this award,” Garcia said. “But we often use the term ‘national trea-sure’ to describe someone that we honor and is really dear to us – Darlene is our Springtown treasure.”

In essence, Darlene is exactly the type of person for whom this award was intended.

Pennington – in her usual un-assuming way – focused on the memory of the award’s name-sake as she took the podium.

“I just want to thank the Cham-ber for honoring Judy’s memory through this award every year,” she said. “I loved Judy. She had

a great heart, a great personality, a great work ethic, and a great love for Springtown.

“I am humbled to be a recipi-ent of the Spirit of Springtown Award. And as I look out at all your wonderful faces, I see those

same wonderful qualities in each of you.”

“You are the spirit of Spring-town,” she said. “I may take this award home tonight, but I share it with you and thank you with all my heart.”

BY NATALIE GENTRYDedication, determination,

and drive are characteristics necessary for anyone in law en-forcement.

This year’s Springtown Cham-ber of Commerce Law Enforce-ment Officer of the Year Laura Stone possesses these traits in

spades.“Laura is pro-active,” Chief of

Police Ed Crowdis said. “If she sees something that needs to be done or fixed, she’ll jump right in and start doing it.”

“Even if it’s not part of her job she’ll say ‘well I’ve got time and it needs to be done,’” he contin-ued.

Hired in 2007, Stone has been with the Springtown Police De-partment almost seven years.

She began her work as a dis-patcher and has covered all three shifts.

Then, a little over a year ago,

Stone’s versatility a boon to the Springtown

she was promoted to the chief’s administrative assistant.

“Even now she is quick and willing to fill in if the station is shorthanded,” Crowdis said. “She’s pretty much my girl Fri-day.”

Stone organized the Nation-al Night Out event and heads

up the Tickets for Toys cam-paign each year,” he continued. “Anything I need, she gets it done.”

Stone married her husband Curtis back in 2010 and the couple has one child, 3-year-old Maelynn.

When asked about her re-sponse about being selected for the award Stone said, “First, I love my co-workers!

“When I found out I had re-ceived the award it made me feel really good,” she continued.

“It’s nice to know all my hard work hasn’t gone unnoticed.”

BY NATALIE GENTRYEvery year ballots are sent

to members of the Chamber to nominate someone who is involved with the group and Springtown.

They are looking for the Springtown C h a m b e r Member of the Year.

This year the members collectively chose Mark Baumann of Brookshire’s as the re-cipient of the award.

“We have exceptional mem-bers of the Chamber and a num-ber of volunteers who work tire-lessly for the Chamber at events, so choosing one is very diffi-cult,” presenter Dr. Robert Moss said. “But Mark does a lot for the community – he just doesn’t acknowledge it.”

Moss describes Baumann as a behind the scenes kind of guy.

“He just shows up when need-ed – like a superhero – and what-ever you need is done,” Moss said.

Baumann and the crew at Brookshire’s volunteer at many Chamber events such as the All-American Bike Rally, Christmas on the Square, and the Wild West Festival.

“He not only supports the Chamber, but he also supports the Springtown Independent School District,” Moss said. “Last August he donated a huge container of freeze-pops to the marching band students who were practicing twice a day.”

Baumann lauded for community contributions

In addition, Moss noted that Baumann also provides food for the Chamber luncheon which is then prepared by the Springtown High School Culinary Arts stu-dents.

“He does anything he can for the students,” Moss said. “Those are just a few of the invaluable contributions Mark makes to the com-munity.”

But Bau-mann insisted that it is a

team effort.“Brookshire’s allows us to do

what we do and they encourage us to give back to the commu-nity because it’s the right thing to do,” he said. “I can only do what I do because of all my ex-ceptional partners who do their job and allow me to help wher-ever we can, so I want to thank them.”

“I was very surprised to re-ceive the honor, and I appreci-ate the community of Spring-town and all the support they give us.”
