Presentation of cheque by Geoff Glassock to Rotary Club of Lismore West, Inc

GUEST SPEAKER: Dr Geoffrey Glassock – Sustainable Cambodia Geoff commenced his address by presenting our Club with a cheque for $1,000 raised by his Rotary Club of Springwood when they heard about the damaged caused by the Lismore flood of Fri 31 March. The money to be used for our Club’s community work in Lismore arising out of this flood. Geoff had an affinity for Lismore when he studied at Southern Cross University and when he met Rod Fayle on their visit with other Rotarians to Cambodia in February. Geoff then gave a very interesting PowerPoint presentation on Cambodia, particularly Pursat Province where our Club has carried out international service projects since 2009. Geoff stated that Rotary projects in Cambodia are sorely need following the devastating years of the Khmer Rouge Regime led by Pol Pot from 1974 – 1979 where over 2 million Cambodians were killed, especially educated Cambodians, to enforce Pol Pot’s agrarian revolution. Rotary’s Sustainable Cambodia projects has enable villages to have better homes, schools and tertiary education, food growing techniques, healthy water supplies, sewing machines and cloth to earn an income. The Rotary Club of Pursat consists of young men, including university graduates who have been helped by Rotary programs and are now going out helping other villagers. Geoff spoke about mushroom growing programs for villagers to earn an income and help avoid girls working in brothels as a family income. Destiny Rescue is a Christian-based non-profit organisation formed in 2001 to rescue children from sex trafficking and sexual exploration. They help rescue the sexually exploited and enslaved, restore the abused, protect the vulnerable, empower the poor, and are a voice for the voiceless. Some Australian Rotary Clubs support and work with Destiny Rescue.
