friends. I still crave their friedchicken.

Many a pair of cycling gloves havebeen purchased at RevolutionCycle, and hours spent browsingthe shelves at Wee Book Inn. Istill remember the day I almostjumped for joy in Just for Funwhen I found a secondhand CD bya Francophone musician fromMontreal, whose music isextremely hard to find (and expen-sive) this side of Quebec. When Iexplained to the owner how hardit had been for me to find hismusic - these were the daysbefore downloading MP3s online– she said she was glad she haddecided to take the CD eventhough she had never heard ofhim before (his name is Paul Pichéin case anyone cares). I try tomake at least one trip there a yearto see if my taste in esoteric and

international singer/songwriterscan be satisfied.

Over the years I have witnessed abalance of chain stores with momand pop shops for both retail andrestaurants. The chain stores area reflection of our modern timeswhile those family businessesdemonstrate the work ethic thatstill exists amongst many people.I try to patronize independentstores whenever possible.

Finally, I am making new memo-ries participating in all of the newand wonderful community eventstaking place in the area. Fromcommunity league barbecues tolarger events like Dogapaloozaand Storefront Cinema Nights, there is a lot going here for every-one to build positive memoriesalong Stony Plain Road andJasper Place.

Making Memories Along the Road

Memories attached to a place canbe powerful. The Stony Plain Roadand Jasper Place areas stand outin my mind for a variety of rea-sons.

Some of my earliest memoriesinclude trips to London Drugs withmy family. I still shop there on aregular basis. The Jasper Gatesshopping area has changed a lotover the years, with differentstores and restaurants coming andgoing. Royal Fork Buffet in particu-lar used to be a weekly destinationfor myself and a group of my

Handcrafted Quality Kitchens…Handcrafted Quality Kitchens…

Free Countertop

This month I'm going to cover somethings we started on early in ourmarriage that helped us bank awaysome money rather painlessly. These tips will save you a lot ofmoney in the long run if started atthe right point in time.

1. If you are newly married or soonto be married, consider living on oneincome. I don't mean quit your job. Imean live on the higher income, and put the other income into a sav-ings account.

If that is not feasible, consideradding your incomes together, andbanking 25%. Put the 25% in a sep-arate account from your payaccount. Better yet, have the higherincome deposited directly into yourchequing account, and the otherdeposited directly into a savingsaccount so you don't even have tosee it.

This practice will be very beneficialto you especially if you are planningon starting a family one day as youwill be one income short when

maternity leave begins. If you arealready used to living on oneincome, it won't be too much of anadjustment.

By living on one income, or on lessthan what your full pay is, you will bebetter equipped to handle thosefinancial bumps in the road such asmaternity leave, job loss or majorhome repairs, and you will even getan emergency fund out of it.

2. If you are a new or expecting par-ent, when your child is born you canapply to the Canadian governmentfor both the Canada Child TaxBenefit (CCTB) and the UniversalChild Care Benefit (UCCB). You maybe approved for the Alberta FamilyEmployment Tax Credit (AFETC)depending on your family income.

If you are financially able, consideropening an RESP for your child assoon as he or she is born and makeyour monthly deposits at least equalto those that you get from all of thetax rebates you receive. For exam-ple, if you receive a combined totalof $100 per month from the govern-ment(s), try to put that $100 permonth into an RESP to save for yourchild's post-secondary education.

In addition to saving for your child'sfuture, you will also get additionalmoney in grants from the govern-ment to further increase your sav-

ings because you opened the RESP.The UCCB and CCTB run until yourchild is six years old, so if you startan RESP at the beginning, you won'tbe putting any of your own money infor the first six years. You can dis-cuss the benefits of an RESP andopen one at your financial institution.

3. If you are a parent to young kids, start allowances early and talk aboutmoney with your kids.

Consider starting a weekly allow-ance with your child as soon as theyare old enough to help in some wayaround the house, and when theybegin asking about money and/ormaterial things. I recommend givinga weekly allowance of between 50cents and $1 for each year of age. Ifyour child is five, then you wouldstart off between $2.50 - $5.

Begin by having an age-appropriatediscussion about what an allowanceis, if your child would like to receivean allowance, and what must bedone to earn it. To start, chores canbe as simple as pulling their bedsheets up when they get out of bedin the morning and making sure Mr.Bear is lying on the pillow.

Make sure you are consistent withthe day you are giving out theallowance and that you are praisingthe effort that your child is putting into their new responsibilities. Answer

any questions about money as bestas you can. You can also teach theimportance of saving by asking yourchild to keep some money backfrom each allowance and saving itfor later.

And make sure when it's time for araise in allowance (birthday) that yousit down with your child and praisethem for the work they did and talkabout their new allowance and anydifferent responsibilities that comealong with it if necessary, and mostof all, be excited for them - they aretaking a big step.I hope you found something usefulhere either for yourself or for some-one close to you.
