The 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain was celebrated in Leamington Spa on Sunday 12 September. Organised by 310 branch RAFA in Leamington Spa the event was attended by the Air cadets from 2438 (Bishop Ullathorne) Squadron ATC Coventry, the Chairman of the District Council, the Mayor of Royal Leamington Spa Councillor Robert Cunliffe and other dignitaries. This memorial service took place at the War me-morial, Euston Place at 3pm. With a welcome from the president of the RAFA Leamington Spa Branch Robert Coombes, the service was led by an RAF Padre. With readings from a Letter of St Paul to the Romans and the Kohima Epitaph, The act of re-membrance was noticed during the Last Post. Every year the battle is commemorated around the county and during this platinum celebration year, the Cadets from 2438 (Bishop Ullathorne) Squadron Air Training Corps were proud to be represented in the event at the Cenotaph in Leamington Spa, standing amongst the stan-dards that were on parade. Cadet Flight Sergeant John Ormsby from 2438 (Bishop Ullathorne) Squadron Air Training Corps helped out with the passing of the stan-dards and stood to attention infront of the ceno-taph during the readings.

Commanding Officer Flight Lieutenant Nathan Adams of 2438 (Bishop Ullathorne) Squadron Air Training Corps said ' “It’s very appropriate to mark the Battle of Britain. “This was one of the most crucial battles of the war, especially on September 15.“ It is also important for the ca-dets to remember and say their thank you’s to 'The Few' who stood up to fight for this country and the free world against seemingly impossible odds'

POPPY APPEAL

On Saturday 6 November 2438 (Bishop Ul-lathorne) Squadron were invited by The Royal British Legion to help sell poppies and raise money for the 2010 Poppy Appeal. They joined ex-service veterans, members of the Royal British Legion, The Army Cadets and Sea cadets at the Ricoh Arena to sell the poppies at the Coventry versus Leeds game. The collection took place prior to the football match and the cadets circu-lated around the stadium collecting money and selling the poppies. During the collection the Cadets got to rub shoul-ders with the Coventry City team’s mascot as well as a number of visiting VIPs. The reception from the public was very good towards the collection, though the amount raised is currently unknown. The Cadets also had their photo taken with city defender Chris Hussey. Flight Lieutenant Nathan Adams, Officer Com-manding 2438 Squadron said: 'The Squadron jumped at the chance to help the British Legion raise money for the poppy appeal. This is an im-portant event in the Squadron Calendar and it gives the Cadets the opportunity to recognise the sacrifices made in the name of freedom and to be able to raise vital funds to support the work of the Royal British Legion. I must thank The Royal British Legion for organising the collection at the football match and to the Cadets for giving up their time for this very worthwhile cause'.

FIREWORKS EXTRAVAGANZA Staff and Cadets from 2438 (Bishop Ul-lathorne) Squadron were out in force on the evening of Saturday 6th November, to help the Kenilworth Round Table with its 23rd fire-works display at Kenilworth Castle. The massive event attracted over 11,000 visi-tors, and has become one of the most popular public firework shows in the Midlands. Held in the grounds next to Kenilworth Castle, and set against the historic and dramatic back-drop of the ruins the skies of Kenilworth came to life for this extravaganza. The staff and cadets were amongst hundreds of other volunteers offering their services to help the Kenilworth Round Table with this event. As well as attending safety briefings before the event, the staff and cadets assisted the Round Table around the front entrance to the castle. They were at hand to raise the alarm to a member of the Round Table if they were to notice a member of the public needing emer-gency assistance. They also offered assistance to the public by pointing them in the direction of the entrance. The cadets also got to see the bonfire, and a great display, as well as listening to the live DJ roadshow provided by Coventry & War-wickshire's Radio Station, Mercia FM and presenter JD from the morning show. All the proceeds that the Kenilworth Round Table raise from the event are used to provide direct financial support to local charities and com-munity causes, due to this the Staff and Ca-dets from 2438 (Bishop Ullathorne) Squad-ron were happy help. Civilan Instructor Roni Tillman said “This was the second time in its 23 years the staff and cadets from 2438 Squadron have helped the Kenilworth Round Table with this event. I am impressed with the cadets that showed up for this event, it was a long afternoon and evening for them and they did the Squadron proud. The cadets thoroughly enjoyed the experience and the fireworks display was a spectacular show. I must thank the Kenil-worth Round Table for invited us to help them with the event and I hope we can con-tinue to support them in future years”.

REMEMBERANCE PARADE

Cadets from 2438 (Bishop Ullathorne) Squadron showed their respects during Coventry’s 2010 Remembrance Service. The cadets from 2438 (Bishop Ullathorne) Squadron joined veterans from the Royal British Legion, ex-service organisations, serving personnel, other Coventry Air Ca-det Squadrons, The Army Cadet Force, Cov-entry Corp of drums and other youth groups to march along Spencer Avenue with the Coventry Corps of Drums leading the procession through to the Cenotaph in the War Memorial park for the Remem-brance Service. The Remembrance Service took place on Sunday 14th November and was conducted by The Right Reverend Dr. Christopher Cocksworth Lord Bishop of Coventry. Dur-ing the service the crowd stood in silence as the standards were dipped in salute as the bugler sounded the Last Post.

Hymns were sung by Mrs. Eileen Wake-lin, the Exhortation was recited by ex serviceman Mr. Sid Watson and the Lord Mayor’s Cadets for 2010 and the KOHIMA was recited by Wreath Mar-shal ex-serviceman Mr James Ramsey, BEM. Flt Lt Nathan Adams laid a wreath on behalf of 2438 (Bishop Ullathorne) Squadron and Cadet Flight Sergeant John Ormsby marched with the Squad-ron banner. Flight Lieutenant Nathan Adams, Offi-cer Commanding 2438 Squadron said: “It was very pleasing to see so many ca-dets from 2438 (Bishop Ullathorne) Squadron on the remembrance Sunday Parade. It is important for the cadets to recognise the sacrifices made in the name of freedom, both over the past conflicts as well as current operations.”

BLITZ 70TH ANNIVERSARY

CADETS and staff from 2438 (Bishop Ullathorne) Squadron Air Training Corps joined the approximately 3000 people that gathered to commemorate the Blitz which destroyed vast swathes of Coventry. The service which took place at the new Coventry Cathedral on Sunday November 14 marked the 70th anniversary of the night Coventry was devastated by German raids. During the service messages were read out by local school children, families, the Lord Mayor of Coven-try and the Lord Mayor's cadets for 2010. The ser-vices was lead by The Dean of Coventry, The Very Reverend John Irvine He said: “We gather to recall the events of 70 years ago when much of the city of Coventry, including her medieval cathedral, was destroyed by enemy action. “Many lost their lives and many more were injured. Numerous homes and businesses were obliterated. “Many here today bring painful memories of those days in 1940 and 1941 when our city and her people suffered so terribly.” Local school children made 1,085 paper flowers which were handed out to the congregation. Each flower represented a person who died in the Coven-try air raids, according to numbers on the Coventry Roll of Honour. After the service the congregation were led out of the cathedral by the standard bearers, one of which was the banner of 2438 (Bishop Ullathorne) Squadron Air Training Corps held by Cadet Flight Sergeant John Ormsby, followed by city dignitaries. The congregation walked into the ruins of the old cathedral to the music of Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata, which was chosen because the November 14 raid was code-named Operation Mondscheinsonate (Moonlight Sonata), Thousands of people gathered in and outside the old cathedral ruins to hear the air raid sirens sound at 7.15pm, the moment when bombers first appeared over the city of Coventry on November 14, 1940. Coventry’s Lord Mayor, Coun Brian Kelsey, ad-dressed the congregation he said “I invite you to join me in honouring the memory and sacrifice of all who suffered in the bombing of the city”.
