TO ASSE2D3LE THE CATL SI.22 ROD.

.1. Take the End Support Rod with the fixed insulator, but without anyIndicator Signal at the end,

2. Screw into this rod another 3 support Rods making a total, of 4s e c t i o n s o f a p p r o x i m a t e l y 2 f t 9 i n s i n l e n g t h . >

3. Commence now to build up the Call Sign, which must be repeated inthe length of the rod to fill the rod and include not less than 3large spaces at the end of the rod,

A. Take the YELLOW SPACER, numbered No. 1, and slide it on to the freeend of the last Support Rod*

5. The DOTS and DASHES, bakelite mouldings with brass inserts, areslipped en to the rod to spell out the letters of the Call Sign.

6. Between each letter place one Small Blade FIGURE SPACER and becweoneach comolete Call Sign group one larger Blade GROIIP^SPACER.

7." When the Call Sign rod has been assembled take one of the SteelWires screwing the 'ALE END LUG into the end of the completed rod.

8. Insert a MALE END IIECE into the other Lug of this wire and slideall the mouldings off the rod ra to the wire.

9. Remcve the MALE END PIECE from the wire and screw the two lugs oithe wire, together so as to form a ring.

TO ASSEMBLE THE MESSAGE

1. Take the same End Support Rod with the fixed insulator and screwi n t o i t 3 S u p p o r t R o d s , , . „ . ' . * . M *

2. Take the-YELLOW SPACER, numbered No. 2, and slide it on to the treeend of the last Support Rod.

3. Now commence to_build up the message in the normal way:N R , . . G R . . . 3 1 T e x t o f m e s s a g e e t c . . . •

Suppose there is a message with 7/T No.l containing 31 groups, thenthe rod will be assembled:N, small spacer, R, small spacer, figure one (letter A), lar£egrouo spacer, G, small spacer, R, small spacer, figures 31 (letterV, snail spacer, letter A) large group spacer, BT, large group

. soacer, 'followed by the text.4. Letters representing figures will be separated from one another by. a small black spacer and each group of four symbols will be separa

ted by a large group spacer.5. The messages will end with a repetition of the Indicator group

followed by the number of encoded groups, which number is two groupsless than the encoded number of groups in the message. In messageswhere-prefixes are used, the group containing the prefix will not beincluded in the number of encoded groups. . In this example themessage will end vdth_figures 29 (letter U, small spacer, letter N),l a r g e g r o u p s p a c e r , A R . ■ ' . . , _ n

6. Do not attempt to set up more groups on a rod than vail always ensure that the free end of the rod terminates with at least.three olthe larger Black Spacers.

7 When the rod has been filled the mouldings should be drawn oif onto the wire in a way similar to that for the Call Sign rod, care ^being taken-to see that the r-2LL02 SPACER is removed with the mouldi n g s o n t o t h e w i r e . <

8. Continue in this manner with the third rod, remembering to put theYELLO'"'' SPACER, numbered No.5, first on the rod. Proceed m thisway with the other rods until the complete message is transferredt o t h e w i r e s . . W 1 1 .

*9 The last rod set uo, on which, the message terminates, must be tilled.to the end with sufficient black spacers to keep the mouldings rigido n t h e r o d , .

10. The Call Signs end message are now all assembled on wires and canbe transported to the operating site.

TO A33K33LE THE APPARAT I IS.

1. At the Transmitt ing si te sufficient of the 17 avai lable rods shouldbe assembled to carry the Call Signs and completed message. Eachrod should have an end section on which is permanently assembledthe appropriate rod number in the letter-figure code,

• 2, The section of the Transmission on Wire No.l (the Call Signs) isthen transferred tc Rod No.l,These numbered rods should be held in the LEFT hand with the froeend to the right. This is important so that there can be nopossible mistake in reading the number of the rod. Care must betaken to see that the numbered YELLOW SPACER slides on to the rodFIRST, and that the number on this Spacer -corresponds with thenumber on the rod.The wire is then removed from the rod and a MALE END PIECE with aBakelite Washer placed on the thread is screwed home to clamp themouldings tightly on the rod.

3. *The remaining wires are transferred to the numbered End SupportRods in a similar way, care being taken to see that the numberedYELLOW SPACERS correspond with the numbers fixed on the rods,

4,' When the message has been transferred to the rods, they wilL beassembled in two Clamps so that the End Support Rods will have thefixed numbers on the left-hand side. The fixing screws of theClamps, and the rods assembled so that there are nine rows in thotop layer and eight rows in the lower layer,

5. The rod nearest to the Operator will be the Call Sign Rod and- theremaining rods can be fitted into the slots of the Clamps in anyord^r and not necessarily in numerical sequence.

6. When all the rods have been fitted into the slots, the Clamps willbe closed and the sorev/s tightened. The whole assembly is laidflat on the table near to the Transmitter with the Call Sign Rod ontop and nearest to the Operator. *The two bakelite Spacing Strips are inserted between the two layersof rods about 10" from each end. If only one row of rods is usodthese strips are then placed one on top of the other underneath andin the centre of the row of rods.

OPERATION OF THE APPARATUS

1. The Wiper Plugs are inserted in the key sockets of the Transmitterand"with the contacts short-circuited the transmitter is tuned upin the usual way,

2. A convenient way to short-circuit these contacts is to place thewiper under the Brass Clamps, contact strips uppermost, so thatthese contacts are shorted by one of the clamps.

3. The wiper Is held firmly in the Right hand with the contacts' on theunderside and the forefinger on the upper side of the rectangularblock to ensure a steady contact pressiure,

4. The speed of wiping should be kept as constant as possible and besuch that to wipe a rod from end to end takes approximately onesecond. This is most important and the Operator should count to himself ashe wipes to ensure tills constant speed. If the rod is wiped too slowly there will be a tendency for thewiper to catch at the juncture of the mouldings causing a break inthe continuity of the transmission' of the message. If, om the other hand, the rod is wiped too fast the receivingOperator wi l l have di fficul ty in recept ion.The angle of the wiper to the rod should not be steeper than 45degrees.The Operator should stand beside the table facing towards the lefthand side of the End Support Rods, level with the insulated end ofthe rods and then lean forward to wipe through steadily from theleft hand end to the right hand end of the assembly,

5. One of the main functions of the equipment is to prevent the Operator being located by D.F. apparatus and it is therefore advisableto vary the intervals between sections of the message, as a rhythmic repetition would be 22a- easier to D.F,
