Sri. Nalvadi Krishnarajendra

Wodeyar the visionary king of

Mysore during the first 40 years of

the 20th century was responsible

for the construction of the

Krishnaraj Sagar reservoir, which

is virtually the lifeline of Mandya

district. Wodeyar was responsible

for the establishment of the

University of Mysore, State Bank of Mysore, the hydroelectric power projects at

Shivanasamudram and Shimsha. He was also involved in many more developmental projects

that really made Mysore state a progressive one. Gandhiji was so impressed with Nalvadi

Krishnarajendra Wodeyar, that he called him Rajarishi (a saint king). It was during Nalvadi’s

reign that Mandya district formed in 1939. People of Mandya fondly remember Nalvadi

Krishnarajendra Wodeyar and Sir M. Vishweshwariah, the Engineer-Statesman who built the

KRS reservoir as the architects of Mandya district. The Mysore Sugar Company at Mandya

came into existence in January 1933. The sugar factory at Mandya is one of the biggest

industrial units in the state.

Krishnaraja Sagara Reservoir named after the Late. Sri.Krishnaraja Wodeyar, in

whose reign its construction was undertaken. The construction of the dam was across the Kaveri

River, 9 miles on the upstream side of the historic town of Srirangapatna of Mandya district.

The lake at the maximum water level, as a water spread of 50 sq. miles. The reservoir ensures a

steady supply of water for the generating station at Shivanasamudram and Shimsa to an extent of

about 59,200 kW. It also ensures a steady supply of water for

irrigation in the arid tracts of about 1, 20,000 acres of Mandya

District.

Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya was a notable Indian

engineer, scholar, states-man and the Diwan of Mysore. He was a

recipient of the Indian Republic's highest honor, the Bharat Ratna.

The Krishnaraj Sagara dam is the direct outcome of the efforts of

the great engineer. Dr. M.Visvesvaraya had the foresight and

initiative at a time when economic planning and industrialisation

were still in their infancy in India. The Late Dr. M.Visvesvaraya

designed the dam when he was Chief Engineer of the state.

Mandya District brought under assured irrigation consequent by the

construction of the Visvesvaraya Canal.

LATE SRI. K V SHANKARA GOWDA

Founder Chairman, Former Education Minister,

Government of Karnataka, Karnataka

The Establishment of the People’s Education Society at Mandya

can be said to be a highly important voluntary effort made in

recent years for the progress of the district. Encouraged by the

idea of an over-all educational advancement of the district

envisaged by the five-year Plans, eminent social workers of the

Area, under the guidance of Sri K.V. Shankara gowda, fondly

called as KVS, former minister of education and well known as

“Nithya Sachiva” founded and registered this public

institution in 1958.

During 1962, about 62 acres of land on the south –western boundary of Mandya town were

secured and a campus for this College has been developed on this land. Further, the Society

made strenuous efforts for collection of funds for starting an Engineering College and with

active public support established the P.E.S College of Engineering at Mandya with academic

training facilities in three major branches of engineering, Viz., Civil, Mechanical and Electrical.

The Institution has grown today with Eight UG and PG programs.

Vision of Life:

My service of man is my worship of Him,

My love of man is my devotion to Him

God apart from man is no God for me. (By: Swamy Ramadasa)

Mission of Life: Building team of resources and render professional service in creating Rural

- Urban link by constructing Bridges. Rural to Urban connectivity is the key for Indias’

growth. Connectivity among village clusters and rural to urban is a challenge where rivers

flow; particularly when flooded. For children to go to schools, for sick people to go to

hospitals, for people to go for jobs, for old age people to go for receiving pension, for

marketing the agricultural produce like fruits and vegetables in time, to procure grocery and

other items from town for skilled people to come to villages from town and so on, river

crossing is an obstacle.

The construction of hundred and (138) more suspension bridges across rivers in India have

been a Mission for creating the rural-urban connectivity and was possible only because of the

team spirit of employees of Ayasshilpa and has become an instrumental in making everyone

of them a leader in himself.

PROFESSIONAL PROFILE

An accomplished engineer with rich cross functional experience in Mechanical and Civil

Engineering Industry and the construction of suspension foot bridges, Training &

Development, resource Management in a distinguished career spanning nearly four decades.

Endowed with a positive outlook along with the virtues of patience and listening an

innovative designer of suspension foot bridges with proven skills of team work in connecting

villages through ‘Suspension Foot Bridges’ (SFB) across rivers in India. Being a focussed

professional with demonstrated abilities, so far 138 suspension foot bridges are completed

and another 2 are ongoing.

The floods in river during rainy season make the life havoc in villages. They become isolated

islands disconnected from mainland for all kinds of services. The sufferings continued until

the technology of suspension foot bridges was put to use.

The tale of suspension foot bridges started at home village for Girish in 1989. Being a

technology expert in the village Girish felt it a duty to do something for his fellow beings at

low cost price. It turned out to be a work with community participation with inputs of free

manpower and material. Starting from the first bridge every bridge was constructed by public

demand to solve the problem of non-connectivity between villages due to the floods in rainy

season. Making of each bridge was a challenge which needed critical research and planning,

physical and financial risks. However, experience of building each bridge was a learning

added to the plan and skills of constructing new bridge. Naturally the technology and material

have got reformed from bridge to bridge. The most satisfying experience at the end of the

every bridge was the whole hearted blessings given by the beneficiaries of the villages. The

list of the bridge is long enough to print here (it is attached), but briefly they have been across

the river in Karnataka, Kerala, Andrapradesh and Orissa states.

The suspension foot bridges connecting the people of villages are of varied spans and

structures. Generally the bridge is suspended by the Steel Wire ropes tied on the RCC towers

and to anchor blocks on two sides of river. Sometimes instead of RCC towers, Steel towers or

living trees are also used. The platform of concood slabs provides a strong and long lasting

walking path. Protection is given by fixing mesh on both sides that prevent any risk of people

falling down.

Now the 138 bridges open for 24x7 have linked people living on both the sides of rivers

namely Payaswini, Netravathi, Tunga, Bhadra, Kauveri, Tejaswini, PandavaraHole, Shalmali,

Gangavali, Ghataprabha, Badabagilu, Aghanashini, Sharavathi, Seethanadi, Krishna Canal,

Abbifalls, Kaloor, Hattihole, Gundabala, Kondelkana, Kundajehole, Yetnattipura, Swarna,

Bilehalla in Karnataka; Chandragiri, Kuppam, uppala, Vannattipura in Kerala; Kammam, and

Krishna river in Andrapradesh And Nagaavali in Orissa.

International Relations

The success story of suspension foot bridges brought Mr. Tony of Switzerland to India and he

found a bridge brother in Mr. Girish Bharadwaj. Tony himself was engaged in construction of

suspension bridges in poor countries of South America and Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam.

Tony writes, “When I first read about Girish I wantd to meet him. Not so much because of

the bridges, which are actually stronger, often of longer span and probably more durable than

those we help build. But because I saw a man who, like me, had given nearly 20 years of his

life to help people get across rivers, to connect them and who does this out of a sense of duty

to serve, without any profit motive. I have not been disappointed for he really turned out to be

a brother in spirit and a teacher.”

Girish visited Srilanka on invitation from the local entrepreneurs to build suspension foot

bridges there. But the project was given-up by Srilanka Govt, as funds were flowing in after

‘SUNAMI’ and they have developed roads and big, vehicular bridges.

Memories of Dr. Girish Bharadwaj B AT P.E.S.C.E MANDYA

Being selected by Director of Technical Education Bangalore and seat allotted at P.E.S.C.E

Mandya, I went to Mandya and reached at 4.00 PM, In June1968. It was late and at college

office I was asked to come on next day. There were no lodges and went to Maddur and stayed

at Maddur Hotel and returned and joined college and hostel next day. Classes started after

2days. Hostel was V.S.V.M, about 1.5km away from college and I used to take a walk with

fresher’s.

After about a week, I suffered raging and I wept whole night and decided to leave the course.

Early morning at 5.00 AM I packed everything and my roommate Sri Ramachandra, my

senior student noticed me packing to leave and told me not to leave and assured me of giving

protection as he knew senior students. I changed my mind and many days I was going college

with fear, slowly that bad experience was kept aside.

In the II Semester, College Day came. I became heroine in the drama. Then onwards for

college day and hostel day I was heroine in dramas. Our college did not have co-education.

Only boys were there. Students used call me “Miss P.E.S”.

I was looking small and my friends never allowed me to join any game, Cricket, Kabaddi,

Volley ball etc. They used to send me out.

I bought a bicycle to go to college. I went for swimming and I became swimming champion

while in IV B.E and win some prizes in Mandya District level swimming competition also.

N.C.C was my favourite and I and II year N.C.C was compulsory and III and IV year, even

though it was not compulsory I attended all parades and one summer training camp also. I

became Jr. Under officer N.C.C in IV year.

I was an average student and sometimes ordinance also. But in final year I got 1st class

degree in Mechanical Engineering.

To speak about our Professors and Lecturers I feel nice about them. I Love their teaching. To

tell a few names out of many, Sri Narayana Rao, Sri Shankara Narayana Rao, Sri Palani of

Mathematics, Mr Riaz Ahmed of chemistry, Mr Rajappa Of English, Sri Cheluve Gowda of

Hydraulics and Hydraulic machinery, Sri Krishne Gowda- surveying, Sri Gangadharan

H.O.D mechanical, Sri Honnesh Gowda Principal when I joined and Sri B L

Srinivasamurthy, principal when I came to III year Sri H L Keshavamoorthy, Sri

Chandrashekara Mech, Sri Srinivasa Shetty S.Q.C and machine drawing, Sri Nagarajaiah, Sri

S T Nagaraj, Sri Nagaraj, Sri Padmanabhan lecturer and many. And also Lab technicians

Seetharam and workshop guides all were teaching affectionately. I was a regular student and

doing all homework’s because I liked my Professors.

While in IV year vegetarian mess was closed and I with my pure vegetarian friends rented a

house, we had a cook from my native next 2years I did not stay in hostel.

I passed out in 1973, even after 46years memories are green. But for the first bitter

experience of raging every think is a sweet memory.

I had many good friends and many of them are in contact with me even now.

In IV year we had All India educational tour. That was also nice.

Today what I am, it was my college moulded me. I love my College, P.E.S college of

Engineering Mandya.

Speech by Sri. Umesh Chandra

BEML’s Digital transformation Journey to Industry 4.0

There is widespread recognition among leaders in most industries that the role of digital

technology is rapidly shifting, from being a driver of marginal efficiency to an enabler of

fundamental innovation and disruption. Digitalization is the cause of large-scale and

sweeping transformations across multiple aspects of business, providing unparalleled

opportunities for value creation and capture, while also representing a major source of risk.

Business leaders across all sectors are grappling with the strategic implications of these

transformations for their organizations, industry ecosystems, and society. The economic and

societal implications of digitalization are contested and raising serious questions about the

wider impact of digital transformation. While it is clear that digital technology will transform

most industries, there are a number of challenges that need to be understood. These include

factors such as the pace of changing customer expectations, cultural transformation, outdated

regulation, and identifying and accessing the right skills – to name just a few. These

challenges need to be addressed by industry and government leaders to unlock the substantial

benefits digital offers society and industry.

A digital transformation occurs when a business uses digital technology to change the way

they operate, particularly around customer interactions and the way the customer value is

created

Organizations are facing multi-faceted pressure to digitalize from the customers as well as the

competitors. Customers demand convenient and personalized digital experiences.

Organizations need to build foundational digital capabilities in order to meet the growing

customer demands. Organizations that have invested in building internal agile processes to

deliver on these demands are going to succeed in the race.

Digital Advantages What Does It Demand:

1. Customer Delight: Digital transformation requires that businesses ensure customer

delight through proactively meeting their expectations with meaningful and relevant

solutions and excellent user experience. This is not possible without gathering

customer insights and using it in organizational decision making.

2. Agile Organization: In order to reach the digital potential, organizations must have

both business and IT agility, ensuring that the business can respond to dynamic

customer and market requirements competitively and on-time.

3. Renew core: Organizations need to design and deliver the best possible experience

with minimum cost and risk in the core business besides exploring new fronts. This

requires flexibility in business processes and IT landscapes to respond and anticipate

customer demands with minimum cost and risk.

4. Innovating New Solutions: Being truly digital means staying ahead of customers by

truly understanding how their needs and demands are evolving inside and outside the

boundaries of your business. This requires working across organizational silos and

designing solutions that are desired by the customers.

Many organizations are struggling to innovate along new fronts, inside and outside the

business because of limited budgets. The reason is that biggest share of the budget goes into

running the existing operations, which is further strained by the complexity in the IT

Page 28: Sri. Nalvadi Krishnarajendrapescemandya.org/pdf/Souvenir GD - 10.pdf · The Mysore Sugar Company at Mandya came into existence in January 1933. The sugar factory at Mandya is one

22

landscape leaving little room for innovation. Secondly, 60% of Digital Businesses will suffer

major service failures due to the inability of IT security teams to manage digital risk.

In order to get a better understanding of how can organizations embark on digital

transformation, it is important to know the technological and market forces behind their need

to innovate and re-think their business models. This section will explain some of the

emerging technological trends across different industries that are catalysing the digital

transformations.

With respect to Cloud Technology BEML has Hybrid Technology. The best thing about

having a hybrid environment is it frees up our staff to do other things besides monitoring our

environment all the time

BEML has an Integrated Application Management. The backbone for all our

Applications/Solutions is SAP since 2008. In the year 2010, BEML also moved on to PLM

for both CAD & NON-CAD Users across the company. We have industrialized the core

business and are creating value through innovating new solutions inside and outside the

business area around this core.

Around this Core we have built/are building the Following Major Applications in line with

our digital Vision:

a) Customer Complaint Handling System: Using advanced technologies like Google

maps, Google Mask/Glasses, Application can be deployed on a thin or thick client

& again the back bone as SAP

b) File Life Cycle Management (FLM): To have a paperless office & bring about

transparency. Once Again based on SAP

c) Biometric Attendance System: Web based application again sitting on SAP

d) INDUSTRY 4.0: Moving forward from PLM to Industry 4.0 with 3D-Simulation

from Design to Process Planning to Simulation before Manufacturing.

The biggest roadblocks in the way of digital journey are lack of alignment between IT and

management and lack of organizational infrastructure around digital. IT is mostly used for

cost reduction and scalability and, it’s a challenge to align people, processes and technology

in order to benefit from transformational efforts. In BEML, IT Department reports to the

CMD and enables businesses to have the right people, process, and technology to support

new digital initiatives without impacting long-term maintenance projects. This is done by

combining the existing IT approach aimed at running the applications smoothly and

industrializing core business with the new capability to achieve the agility critical for

exploiting new opportunities and digital transformation.

In BEML, IT technology drives value in businesses in four ways: enhanced connectivity,

automation of manual tasks, improved decision making, and product or service innovation.

An integrated approach to application management helps BEML reach our digital potential

much faster and in the most cost-effective manner by offering control, visibility in value for

money and better customer engagement on digital channels among other factors. This in turn

results in maximum benefits from the investments in technology and digital projects in

general.

Page 29: Sri. Nalvadi Krishnarajendrapescemandya.org/pdf/Souvenir GD - 10.pdf · The Mysore Sugar Company at Mandya came into existence in January 1933. The sugar factory at Mandya is one

23

Industry 4.0 takes digitization a step further, using Cyber-Physical systems, the Internet

of Things (IOT) and Cloud Computing to collate data, turn this into big data, then

smart data & finally business data.

Industry 4.0 is characterised by smart system and industrial internet-based solutions,

leading to improved quality of Services, new savings, enhanced resources utilization and

efficiency.

CONCLUSION:

Top executives must be involved in the organizational digital journey since IT has

implications for the development of whole enterprise. Organizations should ask themselves if

they have visibility in ownership and business case of IT applications and systems; if this is

not clear, this topic should be given priority in the management meetings. Clear KPIs in this

area are important to illuminate the possibilities for having visibility and control.
