The residents of Nasir Shah Colony and Noorani colony of Khon- moh complained that a ‘self pro-claimed’ peer, Fayaz Ahmad Ahangar has turned their lives into a hell and despite complaints against him, ‘Ahangar is being shielded’. The protestors, includ- ing a number of women and children, alleged that Ahan- gar was filing false com- plaints with police against the local youths and letting them languish in police sta- tions for days together. The residents said that Ahangar has banned the use of all smoke- producing substance in their locali- ties. “He, along with his bodyguards, damages our houses without any provo- cation. Beating and damag- ing of our houses is order of the day,” the protesting residents said, adding, Ahangar claimed posses- sion of djinns and was using the same to instil fear among the people. The protestors said that nobody was listening to them. “Last week, we observed a shutdown for three days, but nobody is coming to our rescue,” they said. To save them- selves from starvation, the protestors said they have abandoned their houses and are now living in rented accommodations in nearby village. Even the Member Leg- islative Council said that he was helpless and tired after filing complaints against Ahangar with police and district administration many a times. MLC of the area, Muhammad Ashraf Mir told Greater Kashmir: “I am helpless as the self pro-claimed peer is being shielded. There is no doubt he has made the lives of people miserable.” The protestors said that in case of any untoward incident, the authorities would be responsible for that. When contacted, a police official said that they were trying to sort out the issue. “We are looking into it,” he said. Cop risks life to save school building Srinagar, May 8: A Policeman displayed exemplary courage by risking his life while dousing fire in a school in Islamabad. According to reports, an SPO, Tawseef Ahmad (Belt No: 1178) posted at police post Janglat Mandi, Islamabad showed exemplary bravery by entering the Government Middle School building at Doonipawa, where a fire had broken out due to the leakage of LPG in the kitchen. The SPO entered the room which was in flames and without caring for his life controlled the fire by throwing the burning LPG cylinder out of the window. The cop received burn injuries and has been admitted in District Hospital Islamabad. The people of the area have appreciated the bravery of the cop. HCJK leaders visit Nawakadal, Pulwama Srinagar, May 8: A delegation of Hurriyat Conference Jammu Kashmir (HCJK) leaders led by Muhammad Abdul- lah Taari on Thursday visited Gratabal, Nawakadal here and expressed solidarity with the bereaved family of Shaheed Bashir Ahmad Bhat. The members on the occasion prayed for the martyred youth and for the bereaved family to bear the irreparable loss, an HCJK spokesman said in a statement today. “The delegation later on also visited Litter, Pulwama and expressed condolence with the Democratic Freedom Party member Muhammad Amin Rather on the demise of his father. The members prayed for the deceased and expressed solidar- ity with the bereaved family,” the spokesman added. ML condemns Hakim’s detention Srinagar, May 8: Muslim League Jammu Kashmir acting general secretary Abdul Ahad Parra on Thursday strongly condemned the continued detention of Ghulam Muhammad Hakim, father of League leader Showkat Hakim. Parra, in a statement today, also condemned the raids on the residence of Moulvi Sajjad. Meanwhile, Parra has appealed to the international and local human rights organizations to take cognizance of the ‘atrocities’ on the people during election ‘drama’ and ensure immediate release of all the detained pro-freedom leaders and youth. ICRS JK celebrates World Red Cross Day 2 Rev officials in SVO net SHOWKAT DAR Pulwama, May 8: The State Vigilance Organisation (SVO) today arrested Tehsildar and a senior clerk for allegedly accepting bribe from a person in Tehsildar’s office here. Reports said that an SVO team raided Tehsil office Pul- wama and caught a senior assistant, Ghulam Muham- mad Dar red handed while he was taking bribe of Rs 1000 from a person. "The clerk and the com- plainant informed the team that the money was for Teh- sildar Pulwama. Later the team arrested Tehsildar, Altaf Ahmad Mistri as well," official reports said. A case has been registered against the duo, they added. The Tehsil office was without officer for rest of the day with people returning back without getting their work done. Confirming the incident, Assistant Commissioner Rev- enue Pulwama, Sajad Qadri said: "The Tehsildar and a clerk have been arrested by Vigilance Organisation. The government will decide after verification about the sus- pension of the duo. The deci- sion about deputing another Tehsildar there will be taken after 24 hours." Bajad lauds voters Srinagar, May 8: Felicitat- ing people for voting in his favour in Baramulla Parlia- mentary constituency yes- terday, Peoples Conference candidate, Salamuddin Bajad Thursday said that voters defied all odds to use their right of franchise. “We thank all those people who came out and voted for us and against the twin traditional forces of oppression. We are aware that people voted for us despite a perception created by these twin forces about their invincibility and inevi- tability,” a PC statement quoted Bajad as having said. Srinagar, May 8: Indian Red Cross Society (J&K branch) celebrated the World Red Cross (WRC) Day at its office here Thursday. The theme for this year’s WRC Day, ‘My Red Cross Story’ was announced earlier and a large number of Red Cross volunteers among other people contributed their sto- ries, said a Red Cross state- ment issued today. “Four selected stories were presented by the volun- teers. Three write-ups were awarded with cash prizes besides mementoes and cer- tificates,” said the statement. The function was pre- sided over by Additional Director General of Police (Armed), S M Sahai. On the occasion, Sahai said that organizations like Red Cross are on the fore- front of addressing humani- tarian issues con- fronted by the people.
