An FIR was registered last night at Byculla police station after a complaint by Salim Shaikh, an estate agent that Kaskar and his men had demanded Rs three lakh after thrashing him last Friday, police said. The alleged incident occurred in a room at Damarwala building at Pakmodia Street in South Mumbai’s Bhendi Bazar area, police added. The case was subsequently transferred to J J Marg police station as the place where the alleged extortion took place falls in its jurisdiction. “Kaskar and two others were booked under IPC sections 385 (Putting person in fear of injury in order to commit extortion), 323 (Punishment for voluntarily causing hurt) and 34 (Acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention),” said Anil Madvi, senior inspector at J J Marg police station. The 48-year-old victim, who is a resident of Byculla, first approached the local police station where the FIR was registered and then the matter was transferred to J J Marg police. Kaskar had been deported to India from the United Arab Emirates in 2003. Dawood’s fifth sibling was wanted in a murder case and his alleged role in the controversial Sara Sahara case where a building came up illegally on government land but a court acquitted him in both the cases in 2007. New Delhi Petrol price was today cut by Rs 2.42 per litre and diesel by Rs 2.25 a litre in step with fall in international oil prices. Petrol in Delhi will cost Rs 56.49 a litre from midnight tonight as compared to Rs 58.91 now. Similarly, diesel will cost Rs 46.01 per litre as against Rs 48.26 at present. This is the 10th straight reduction in petrol price since August and sixth in diesel since October. Despite reductions, petrol will cost more than ATF, which is of superior quality and used in aircraft. A litre of jet fuel or aviation turbine fuel (ATF) costs Rs 46.51 per litre in Delhi. New rates of petrol and diesel will be effective midnight tonight, Indian Oil Corp (IOC), the nation’s largest fuel retailer, announced here. After the price cuts, petrol price is the lowest since September 2010 while diesel is cheapest since March 2013. ATF has a higher octane than petrol and diesel is a heavier fraction in the distillation process. Traditionally, auto fuels being of lesser quality than ATF would cost less. Four consecutive excise duty hikes since November, totalling Rs 7.75 a litre on petrol and Rs 7.50 on diesel, have however, reversed this. But for these, the cumulative reduction of Rs 17.11 per litre in petrol price in ten cuts since August and Rs 12.96 a litre Hindus in Malaysia, Singapore celebrate Thaipusam festival Kuala Lumpur/Singapore More than a million Hindus in Malaysia and Singapore today thronged temples to celebrate Thaipusam, a colourful annual religious festival in which many believers pierce their bodies with hooks and skewers to honour Lord Murugan’s victory over demon hordes. During the festival, celebrated in India, Malaysia, Singapore and other areas with significant Hindu Tamil communities, many display their devotion by bearing decorated frames, called “kavadi”, which are fixed to a person’s body using sharp metal spikes dug into their flesh in a form of penance. According to Hindu texts, the festival celebrates the day when goddess Pavarthi gave her son Lord Murugan a lance to slay evil demons. In Malaysia’s Penang state, thousands of devotees converged at Balathandayuthapani Hilltop Temple. Some, gathered since yesterday, stayed the night at various hotels. The devotees also gathered at the Natukotai Chettiar Temple in George Town. The crowd was thickest at the half-a- kilometre route leading to the temple, with more than 300,000 devotees making their way to present offerings. on diesel since its deregulation in October, would have been higher. Petrol and diesel prices were last cut on January 17 by Rs 2.42 and Rs 2.25 a litre respectively. “Since that price revision, international prices of both petrol and diesel have continued to be on a downtrend and the rupee-US dollar exchange rate has appreciated. The combined impact of both these factors warrant a decrease in retail selling prices of both petrol and diesel,” IOC said. 'India does not forgive fraudsters': PM Modi says AAP ruined Delhi for one year New Delhi Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday hit out at the Aam Aadmi Party on the issue of malpractice in donations received by the party, saying that the nation forgives mistakes but not fraudsters. A group of former AAP volunteers had on Monday alleged malpractice in donations received by the Kejriwal- led party. Addressing an election rally in Rohini in north Delhi, the Prime Minister said, "Our country can forgive mistakes, but not fraudsters." The PM also said that the issue of black money was being discussed by everyone in the country, but "this 'kaali raat mein kaala dhan' act is something the country is witnessing for the first time." "Can Delhi be run through dishonesty and lies. Cleverness does not take you very far. We have given test of fire to be where we are," the Prime Minister said, adding that his party would make the national capital "standout" on the world scene if voted to power. "Hathi ke dant dekhane ke aur khane ke aur (what you see is not necessarily true)," he said. He further said it was strange that the very party which used to keep details of Swiss banks accounts of others, strangely had no idea about its own donors. "Rajiv Gandhi faced a lot of trouble because he portrayed himself as Mr. Clean, which was later discovered by people to be a false image," said Modi, adding that those who tried portraying themselves as honest faced more trouble when faced with corruption charges. Modi also called the AAP a "temporary party". "Congress ruined 15 years of Delhi," said Modi, adding that Congress was able to do so because they were earlier a strong and permanent party. "After Congress, came the 'doosre temporary' party which ruined 1 year of Delhi," Modi said, taking a dig at AAP. The Prime Minister also said that the Aam Aadmi Party had been talking about who was more corrupt - the Congress or the BJP. "Now we know the truth. Look at their shamelessness," he said, and questioned AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal on accepting support from the Congress for forming the government last year. "He (Kejriwal) had said 'we (AAP) had not asked for support but they (Congress) gave it to us'. "Similarly they will say they had not asked for the money but they gave it to us," Modi said. Modi said the people of Delhi had elected BJP leaders from all seven Lok Sabha seats in the capital in the 2014 general elections. "You made me your own. Now it is my responsibility to give back the love showered on me by the people of Delhi. Pakistan High Commision staffer in Bangladesh told to leave for terror financing Dhaka A Pakistani High Commission staffer in Bangladesh was asked to leave the country after being found indulging in terror financing including circulating Fake Indian Currency Notes, senior officials said today. Based on intelligence reports, the Sheikh Hasina government asked Pakistan to remove Mohammad Mazhar Khan, non-diplomat attache at the consular section of the High Commission in Dhaka, after his involvement in terror financing and currency forgery racket was found. “The Pakistani High Commission here notified us today that the official already left Dhaka on January 31 along with his family members,” a Bangladeshi foreign ministry spokesman told PTI. He said Dhaka earlier informed Islamabad that their non-diplomat attache was found to be involved in forgery of Indian currency believed to be used for terror financing and demanded his immediate removal. Khan had set up a wide network of producing and distributing fake Indian currency and in collaboration with some colleagues at the High Commission used to channel the money earned through his currency scam to terror groups like Hizb ut-Tahir, Ansarullah Bangla Team and Jamaat-e-Islami, foreign Ministry officials were quoted as saying by The Daily Star. The Pakistani staffer left Dhaka with his family after the foreign ministry, instead of going for harsher measures like deportation, asked Islamabad to withdraw him in a week, officials said. The newspaper quoted a senior diplomat at the Pakistan High Commission as saying, “We have nothing to say on the matter. Whatever response would come would be from our foreign affairs spokesperson.” Khan came under scanner following a confessional statement by a Bangladeshi citizen, Mujibur Rahman, who told a Dhaka court that the Pakistani staffer was directly involved in collecting and smuggling fake Indian currency. An intelligence agency took the lead and probed to unearth that Mujibur and another Bangladeshi Jalil Akhter, both close contacts of Khan, took part in counterfeit Indian currency collection, its distribution at home and smuggling to India. Citing intelligence report, the newspaper said Khan had close ties also with some ex-army and police officers, some teachers of Dhaka University and other universities, officers of Pakistan International Airlines, businessmen. In the aftermath of the Republic Day India-US summitand against the backdrop of global warming and weakoil prices, what rabbits must the finance minister pullout of his hat to lend credence to the pronouncementsmade by the prime minister last week and persuadeinvestors that feasible action will match lofty rhetoric? This article responds to that question with specificreference to energy. The PM told the business leadersgathered to hear him and US President Barack Obamathat his objective was not simply to push India up therank order in the “ease of doing business” index but tomake it the “easiest business environment in the world”.He said that he would personally monitor majorprojects and that “speed” along with “scale” and “skill”would be the tripod on which the government wouldfacilitate investment. The minister of state forcommerce and industry made a comparably absoluteremark in her introductory address. She said India hadalready the most liberal economic terms for foreigndirect investment. The CEOs must, no doubt, havebeen pleased. They may have wondered at thefeasibility of such a grandiloquent commitment, butnot at the sincerity of the PM’s conviction. But now, with the settling of the summit dust, they are askingthe question: How will the government cut throughthe thicket of regulatory procedures, discretionaryauthority and vested interests that make it so difficultto do business? Will it move forward incrementally, with a focus on cleaning up the mess left behind by theprevious government, or will it forge a radicallydifferent path? The former may improve our rank orderin the business index but it won’t move us to the topof the list. The latter may also not get us top billing, but it would leapfrog us into a significantly higherquartile. The answer will be searched for in the fineprint of the budget, for it is the next big economicoccasion. The Republic Day summit has focusedattention on clean energy, technology and globalwarming. The civil nuclear deal has beenreinvigorated and this should expedite the generationof nuclear energy. Solar and wind power have beenprovided a fillip with a $4 billion financial packagethough various US agencies. And though there wasno agreement to cap greenhouse gas emissions a lathe US-China agreement and the PM did not dilutethe government’s official stand that individualcountries bear “common but differentiatedresponsibilities” to mitigate and adapt to globalwarming, there was enough in the interstices of thepublic statements to infer that India and the US mightwell find common ground before the forthcomingParis summit on climate change. The PM did, forinstance, make clear that it was in our national interestto push the economy onto a low-carbon growthtrajectory. Against this backdrop, it would be asurprise if the FM did not dedicate a long paragraphon clean energy in his budget speech. The expectationis that he will look to deliver a robust and holisticpackage of fiscal incentives, subsidies, duty structurerationalisation and low-cost financing to supportrenewables and clean energy technology.

India blundered by ignoring Virender Sehwag, YuvrajSingh for ICC World Cup 2015: Abdul Qadir

New DelhiPakistan’s former leg-spinner Abdul Qadir hassaid the Indian selectorshave “committed ablunder” by ignoringexperienced cricketersVirender Sehwag andYuvraj Singh for theupcoming ICC CricketWorld Cup 2015.According to Qadir, 59,the presence of Sehwagand Yuvraj would havegiven the team liberty toplay with four regularbowlers. “I was surprisedto see that but Asian teamshave this habit ofcommitting blunders. Ifyou have players like

Sehwag and Yuvraj in theteam, it not onlypressurises the oppositionbowlers but also gives theoption of playing with fourregular bowlers,” Qadirtold PTI Bhasha. WhileSehwag set the tone forIndia’s triumphal marchto the title in the 2011World Cup with ascintillating century in thetournament opener inDhaka, Yuvraj wasawarded the Man of theSeries for his all-rounddisplay. “Yuvraj hadbowled brilliantly in thelast World Cup where hewas also the player of thetournament. I would have

also liked to see legspinners like Amit Mishraand Piyush Chawla in theteam since India does nothave intimidating pacebowlers,” said the formerchief selector of PCB.Qadir feels only one Asianteam will make the semi-finals of the quadrennialextravaganza. Grouped inPool B, India and Pakistanwill open their campaignwhen they lock horns onFebruary 15. “I think thatAustralia, New Zealandand South Africa willreach the last four and thelast team will be fromAsian subcontinentprovided England doesnot give them seriouscompetition,” Qadir said.He said that the much-anticipated match betweenthe arch-rivals will be themost crucial match of thetournament. “Theoutcome of India-Pakistanmatch will decide theirfuture in the tournament.

Caribbean cricket legendViv Richards Tuesdayheaped praise on Indianvice captain Virat Kohli, saying he has alreadybecome a One-DayInternational (ODI) battinglegend. Richards, who wasan integral memer of theWest Indies’ World Cup-winning squad in 1975 and1979, also listed Kohli inhis list of top 10 ODIbatsmen. Richards,

considered the mostfearsome batsman in the1980s, put SachinTendulkar at the summitspot, followed bycompatriots Brian Lara,Chris Gayle, Clive Lloyd,Australians Ricky Ponting,Matthew Hayden, India’sVirender Sehwag,Australia’s MichaelHussey, South Afrtica’sAB de Villiers and currentstar Kohli. “The last name

on my list, but not the leastby any means, is youngVirat Kohli. There mightbe some surprise regardingthis pick because he is veryyoung and has a lot ofcricket to play still. But inmy eyes, he is alreadylegendary,” Richards said.Kohli has scored 6232runs in 150 matches, helping himself to 21hundreds. “At such ayoung age he has twice thenumber of ODI centurythan in Tests and he is sucha confident player inlimited-overs. It is not tosay he isn’t so in the longerformat, but I really like hisaggressive style in ODIcricket,” Richards said ofthe Indian who hasrecorded 30 fifties and hisaverage is at 51.50.

Australia coach DarrenLehmann has denied theexistence of a bitterbehind-the-scenes falloutwith Michael Clarke, saying he is “sick” ofspeculation over hiscaptain’s position.Lehmann also indicatedClarke could be fit forAustralia’s World Cup

opener against England inMelbourne on 14February, a match he hadpreviously been ruled outof with a hamstring injury. It is those fitness concernswhich lie at the heart of thealleged feud betweenCricket Australia andClarke, which is provingan unwelcome distractionbefore the World Cup andnext summer’s Ashescampaign in England.Clarke made a playingcomeback for WesternSuburbs in a grade matchagainst Gordon in Sydneylast weekend, scoring 51 inhis first action sincehamstring surgery inDecember. It came after the33-year-old sustained theinjury while scoring a

century in the first Testagainst India in Adelaideearlier that month, and hasled to fierce speculationsurrounding his availabilityfor the forthcoming WorldCup.Cricket Australia have settheir captain a much-debated deadline ofFebruary 21 for Clarke toprove his fitness for thetournament. Australia are the runaway favourtiesto win the 2015 ICC World Cup

Australia are used to beingfavourites for the WorldCup. The four-timechampions are the mostsuccessful side in thetournament and are theNo. 1 ODI team in theworld Watching Australiacruise to victory in theODI tri-series againstIndia and England showedwhy they are again thefront-runners. It is nosurprise everybookmarker has them hasfavourites. The reasons forbelieving they will claimvictory in the final inMelbourne on 29 Marchare many. First, there is

home advantage. Australiahaven’t lost an ODI serieson home soil since 2009.This summer they havebeaten South Africa 4-1and easily dismantledEngland and India. Theyonly time they didn’t win agame in the tri-Series waswhen it rained all day inAdelaide. Australia willplay all of their matches -barring the game against

New Zealand – at home, and, depending on results, could play all theirknockout matches at hometoo. Second, Australia’sbatting line-up thrives infamiliar conditions. DavidWarner is the best openerin the world right now, andon Australian pitches he isbrutal. All three of his ODIhundreds have come athome, including oneagainst England just threeinnings ago. Aaron Finchis the perfect attackingfoil. While he does nothave the class of Warner,he has an excellent ODIrecord.

RBI cuts SLR to provide liquidity

In an attempt to providemore liquidity to thebanking system, theReserve Bank of India(RBI) on Tuesday reducedthe Statutory LiquidityRatio (SLR) by 50 basispoints from 22 per cent to21.5 per cent with effectfrom February 7. This islikely to pump in aroundRs. 45,000 crore to thesystem, which is likely toprod banks to cut theirlending rates. However, the RBI kept the shortterm policy rate (reporate), unchanged at 7.75per cent, which the centralbank had reduced by 25basis points from 8 percent on January 15. It alsomaintained status quo inthe Cash Reserve Ratio(CRR) at 4 per cent.SLR is the portion ofdeposits banks arerequired to hold in theform of gold orgovernment securities

before providing credit tocustomers. Repo rate israte at which the centralbank lends money tobanks, while CRR is theportion of total deposits ofcustomers, whichcommercial banks have tohold as reserves either incash or as deposits withthe central bank. “Giventhat there have been nosubstantial newdevelopments on thedisinflationary process oron the fiscal outlook sinceJanuary 15, it isappropriate for theReserve Bank to awaitthem and maintain thecurrent interest stance,”said RBI GovernorRaghuram Rajan in astatement whileannouncing the sixth bi-monthly monetary policy, here. “In order to createspace for banks to expandcredit, the SLR is beingreduced from 22 per centto 21.5 per cent. 10/9 majority, but Congresscouldn’t head Dolvan panchayat

Vyara,This is a story of what’shappening with GujaratCongress even in itscommitted pockets. It’s about Dolvan talukapanchayat of Vyara talukain tribal pockets ofsouthern Gujarat. Thenewly formed Dolvantaluka was separated fromVayara taluka by theNarendra Modigovernment. Out of tentaluka panchayatmembers, 9 were fromCongress and only 1 fromBJP in this talukapanchayat. This week, there was an election forthe post of president andvice president of Dolvantaluka panchayat. ForCongress, it was an easyelection. For BJP it was an

impossible one. Suppose ifBJP wishes to field itscandidate, there was noneto support his candidatureeven. But BJP wanted tocapture each and everytaluka panchayat, or atleast didn’t want to allowCongress to get power. SoBJP strategists joined thetask. While Congressfielded its candidate forTaluka Panchayatpresident post, BJP fieldedanother candidate from 9members of Congressgroup and declared itssupport. Not only this, butBJP managed to breakCongress group and 5members of Congressdeclared their support toBJP supported candidateof Congress group. Nowwhen BJP supported

Congress candidate hadsupport of 6 members, while Congress party’sofficial candidate hadsupport of only 5 members. When it became clear thatCongress’s officialcandidate would not win,Congress pulled back itsofficial candidate anddeclared BJP supportedmember of Congress groupas its official candidate. ButCongress’s trouble didn’tend here. Five members ofCongress party wrote aletter do districtadministration to form anew group and decided toleave Congress. Thus, technically at the endthere’s no Congresspresident in this talukapanchayat even after 10/9majority.
