SS HOOKERS OVERLOOKS THE VERY WATERS WHERE IT ALL STARTED HISTORY WAS MADE William Halsey Wood made history as the first person to land a tarpon on rod and reel in 1885, right here in Punta Rassa. Up until that moment, many fishermen said it couldn’t be done, but he proved them wrong, capturing a 5-foot, 9-inch tarpon that weighed 93 pounds with his bamboo pole. He didn’t stop there. The gentleman from New York City caught a total of five tarpon during his week-long visit. GENERATIONS INSPIRED His story has inspired countless others to pursue the “Silver King,” and for several generations now, people have flocked to this very spot in pursuit of Tarpon. Great minds among them, such as Theodore Roosevelt, Ernest Hemingway and Thomas Edison, have written passionately about the epic battle between fish and man that takes place here. HISTORY WAS MADE

The Tarpon House was the first hotel that catered to sportsmen from

around the world whose primary objective was to catch, on rod and

reel, the giant Silver King.

The only way to reach the Tarpon House at Punta Rassa in the early years was by sailboat or steamship.

Mrs. C.B.M. Hawley of New York was the first member of the Izaak Walton Club at Useppa to catch a Silver King weighing 150 pounds or more. The year was 1914, and the diamond-button tarpon weighed 155 pounds. Mrs. Hawley is credited with designing the first circle hook, which is now considered the most popular big game fishing hook and with which the tarpon is less likely to get gut hooked.
