We, the parish of Saints Mary and Mathias Catholic Church,
WELCOME all to CELEBRATE, TEACH and LIVE the Mission of JESUS CHRIST
Ss. Mary & Mathias Church 215 W. 8th St. Muscatine, IA 52761
From the Desk of Fr. Hai October 28, 2018
You are Great Parishioners!
Thank you so much for responding to
Bishop Zinkula and me, your pastor, in making
a pledge to the ADA. We need only $50,000
to meet our goal. You will find envelopes at the entrances
of the church. Please do your part so that we can all “pat
ourselves on our backs” for another success.
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
In this weekend’s Gospel reading, we learn
that the blind man Bar.maeus cried out to ask
Jesus for healing, “Jesus, son of David, have
pity on me.” “Master, I want to see.” In our
lives we have faced many tempta.ons and
sufferings that need to be healed. Indeed, we truly need
God’s healing and protec.on. To be healed we need to
come to Jesus, asking him for healing like Bar.maeus who
threw aside his cloak, sprang up, and came to Jesus. We
need to say to God, “God, I want to be healed.” A2ending
Holy Eucharist is one of the best ways that we can come to
God in order to receive his tremendous graces and healing
power.
I remember that in November 2009, I was diagnosed with
non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma cancer. I was shocked when I
heard this terrible news. I did not want to see anyone,
including my family members. I did not know what I would
do at that .me, except cry to God. I cried to God for his
mercy and protec.on. I prayed to God and asked him for
help and healing. I wanted God to bring me back from
sickness to health. I was worried and scared so much, but I
firmly believed that God would never leave me alone in my
sufferings and hopelessness. I strongly believe that God s.ll
loves me and wants me to be safe.
A;er staying in my room for three days, I came to see my
ontological doctor at Genesis West, and I received a
treatment with chemo. A;er 6 months of having
chemotherapy treatment I got a lot be2er. My doctor told
me that my cancer was almost gone. I know that God has
granted me his love and blessing through what he has done
for me. God goes with me in many ways through my family,
friends, doctors, nurses and parishioners who have

The Prayer Ping: How Technology Changes Our Conversations With God, Part 2
BY JANE KNUTH SEPTEMBER 12, 2018
Using a prayer alarm
Colleen’s prayer alarm conjures up images of waking up, jumping out of
bed into the day, or tapping the snooze func.on for five more minutes
of rest. Each of those ac.ons define prayer for me:
Waking up (even when we aren’t sleeping) — Prayer is a moment to
open our eyes, look up from all the busyness, and no.ce God’s presence
in what’s happening all around us.
Jumping out of bed — Prayer is energy for the day. It gives me courage,
spunk, and realism about my limita.ons. I can jump into the day, but I
can’t jump over people. Tomorrow, I have an interview at 7:30
a.m. When my day starts so early, breakfast is important, but so is my
morning prayer. I will be seSng my alarm earlier than usual!
Rest — Prayer is rest. Taking .me to pray gives me a chance to breathe.
Prayer gives me permission to love the good in the present moment,
and leave the perfect for some other .me. At the end of a long day, it’s
not unusual for me to pray lying flat on the floor in a resUul posi.on.
Tex.ng prayers with my grown daughter and Colleen’s prayer alarm are
only two paths for family prayer. The alerts and alarms on our phones
pull us together early in the day, in the middle of the highway, in our
celebra.ons, and in our stress, just like the old church tower bells of
long ago used to remind people to stop and talk to God. Maybe modern
family prayer isn’t that different a;er all.
Jane Knuth is an award-winning author and long.me
volunteer in the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Jane’s
wri.ng can also be seen in “The Good News,” the
newspaper for the Diocese of Kalamazoo, where she
writes a monthly column. “The Prayer List” is Jane’s
fourth book with Loyola Press.

LA SANTA MISA DE HOY ES EN MEMORIA DEL SR. JOSE GUADALUPE NAVARRO Y FELIPA VALENCIA
