Chuck Ramsey was more than my father-in-law, he was my friend for more than twenty-five years. I think Chuck loved the desert as much as he loved life itself. Chuck was always surrounded bypeople, both family and friends. He had a wonderful sense of humor, not a mean bone in his body and could fix just about anything with a few tools, zip ties and duct tape. Because of Chuck, there arethree generations that have been introduced to and fell in love with the desert and everything it has to offer. Chuck and all the memories we created with him will live on forever in our hearts.

TTTTT he guy-in-the-garage has had a

dream for a long time. To live in

the desert.

When we moved out of the city to

the small mountain community of Julian

in 1999 we suspected it was a stopping

point as we moved closer to the

ultimate goal. We just didn’t expect

that we’d be arriving at the goal as

quickly as we did nor at the time of

year that we did.

So there we were packing up and

moving to the desert right in the middle

of summer.

Moving can be a dangerous thing.

Especially for guys who live in the

garage and have purchased things over

the years their wives either did not

know about or possibly knew a portion

of the truth, but not the whole truth.

We spent several weeks preparing

for the big move, and the guy-in-the-

garage was gradually filling up two

enclosed trailers. Only one of them was

ours. The second one used to be ours,

but had recently been sold to a friend

down the street. We told him there was

no hurry to move it from our property

to his. Within just a couple of days of

selling it, the guy-in-the-garage began

loading it with precious metals. You

know, like engines, exhaust pipes,

tools, nuts, bolts, motorcycle frames

and I believe a number of complete

motorcycles.

I said to him one day as I watched

him carry another load to the recently-

sold trailer, “Did you ask Rich if you can

use the trailer to move?” He probably

answered but I didn’t hear him as he moved

deeper into the bowels of this trailer where

he was transferring items from the garage.

A few mornings later I got my answer when

the phone rang early. It was Rich.

“Tell Steve I’m going to pick up the

trailer this morning,” he said. I

hesitated just about a split second

and then said, “I think you need to

talk to Steve.”

At the same time he was filling up the

old trailer, I saw that the new trailer was

also filled with motorcycles. It made sense

that the first thing he would load would be

all of his motorcycles. That’s what he did

whenever we evacuated for a fire (which

had become a habit in the last few years)

and that’s what he was doing now.

What I didn’t understand was the cell

phone call I received from the guy-in-the-

garage a few weeks later. A home inspector

working for one of the real estate agents

had mistakenly left our garage door wide

open while we were gone. He got home

before I did and now the guy-in-the-garage

was clearly explaining to me in a voice that

didn’t even require the use of a telephone

about how all of the motorcycles in the

garage could have been stolen. What I

couldn’t figure out is, what motorcycles

was he talking about? The trailers were

already loaded. They were filled with

motorcycles.

The first thing I did when I got home

was go to the garage. I saw that it was filled

to capacity with motorcycles. It looked as if

not one motorcycle had been moved. And

what I wondered at that exact moment was:

“Where did all these motorcycles come

from?” But knowing how he gets when

someone tampers with his garage I just

figured I’d save my question for later.

I’m not sure I ever did ask that exact

question. But I do remember when we were

unloading a truck load of exhaust pipes at

the new property I’m sure I asked him why

he needed so many exhaust pipes. And it

occurs to me now that I don’t ever recall

hearing an answer.

A few days later when his brother and

a close friend showed up to move the

garage equipment, I watched as they

carried motorcycle engine after

motorcycle engine out and loaded

them into the bed of a truck. Jack and

Ted were laughing about all the

engines and I muttered something that

could have sounded like griping about

all the exhaust pipes. Jack gave me a

look and said “You have to have an

exhaust pipe for each engine, you

know!” So that would also explain all

the frames hanging from the ceiling? I

guess we’re going to match them up

with the exhaust pipes and engines.

I must be slow to catch on.

Because as I watched all this it

occurred to me that when we first

moved to Julian, all of his tools and

motorcycle items were contained in

just the garage. Then he took over the

room I used for an office that was just

off the garage. It became his “engine

room.” Then he built a shed out back,

and later he bought what I dubbed the

“circus trailer” a 1920’s-era semi-truck

trailer. I guess it never occurred to me

that he was filling these things to the

brim with his objects of affection,

anything and everything related to

motorcycles.

I said earlier that moving can be

dangerous, but the ultimate danger

was still ahead.

It came as we were moving my

possessions. Things connected to my

office. The guy-in-the-garage looked

at me in the midst of it and said “We

really need to get rid of some of this

junk, don’t you think?” The really

funny thing is, he was totally serious.

I quickly pondered a variety of

responses to that question and then

finally went with the one he uses the

most when I’m questioning him about

things.

I just looked away and pretended

I didn’t even hear what he said. E

During this Back to the Desert special

issue we decided to revisit this column

that ran shortly after we made the

move to Ocotillo Wells a few years ago.

Hello Off Roaders!

Lately some doctors of chiropractic, (D.C.’s), have been

working in hospitals that are smartenough to use good chiro-docs in theirOrthopedic and Rehab wings. It seemsthe communication may be improvingbetween the medical doctors that aretrained mainly to use drugs and/orsurgery and the chiropractors. I have hadseveral referrals lately from Scripps Clinic,to treat some of their folks who were notmaking progress with basic phyicaltherapy and/or drugs and injections. Also, more referrals from Scripp’s Greenand Sharps, even the VA hospital! This isgreat to see as it is good for the patientsto have a well rounded approach to theirhealth issues. Not being almost forcedinto surgery and drugs is a good thing.Other choices are out there but many atime the general public is led astray or not

even told or evensuggested that theymay want to trychiropractic oracupuncture. Manymore are nearlyforced into drugs orsurgery as theirinsurance does notcover chiropractictreatment. Example;under Obamacare inCalifornia,Chiropractic is notcovered as GovenorJerry Brown hasdecided it is not a“necessary medicalexpense”.

That is a bit odd. If the Govenorreally did his homework he would seethat California has the largest use of

chiropractic in thenation, the worldand has the mostD.C’s of any state orcountry in theworld. But Brown

figured it was notnecessary. Now these

folks with back painwill be forced to goto MD’s for all backpain issues. Moredrugs and surgery, most of the time.

And, it’sreported that “flexion-

traction” seems to workbest. I always wondered

why I got such great resultswith my flexion-traction

tables over the years. See,instead of just straight traction

or “decompression” as some like to call it,flexion-traction is different in that itbends you at the waist as it stretches out, tractions, the lower back. Lots of hypeout there in the market place of lowerback pain over so called“decompression”, as it is really just goodtraction if applied correctly.

I’ve been seeing alot of folks withdisc issues in the neck and the low back. Some of these folks have pain thatradiates through their shoulders anddown to their arms, even hands andfingers or pain down their legs (Sciatica)to their feet, toes. Back to DC’s inhospitals now. Some new studies arefinding that chiropractic care and flexion-traction methods that many DC’s use attheir offices are actually causingdegenerative tissues in the discs (theshock absorbing bearings between bonyvertebra), to actually form new tissue andREGENERATE healthy tissue. They areseeing new blood vessels and cells formthat regenerate the tissue that makes upthe disc once it has some traction and/orchiropractic adjustments to take theoffending compression off the disc in thefirst place. To me, this is not really thatamazing, after all, if you remove theoffending cause of the problem, livingtissue will generally repair itself given thechance to heal.

Check out the picture provided tosee what a lower lumbar discdegeneration looks like. Those “jellydonut” like discs get unequal pressue onthem from a misaligned vertebra sittingon top of it and all the weight of theupper body pressing down. This can anddoes cause the disc to bulge to one oneside. The discs do not “slip”, they bulgeand or leak out to one side. This in turnputs pressure on the nerves and thenerves of the disc itself can radiate painto other areas of the body, like down theleg in the case of Sciatica.

References for the studies thatindicate disc tissue regenerationfollowing chiropractic and flexion tractiontreatments can be found on page 40 ofthe American Chiropractic Associationnews, September, 2013. The chiropracticdoctors who obtained hospital staffstatus and reviewed the studies areJames Cox, D.C., inventor of the CoxFlexion Traction Table and DonApergren, D.C. Hospitals in general coulddo very well for those in back and neckpain if they used chiropractors in theirorthopedic and physical medicine wings. Not every condition needs drugs orsurgery. Regeneration of disc tissues andother positive changes can best occurwith early treatment of flexion-tractionand chiropractic rather than as a lastresort. And yes, age and how long thecondition has been there are alsoindicating factors.

Help: I am stuck in an endless circle of indecision

And I am enjoying it. I get to chewover every catalog, every Internet site and every vehicle I see. Maybe

the analogy is a stretch, but it feels a bitlike dating.

Four wheeling, as a rule, entailsfrequent changes or improvements to the

vehicle and gear. You should understandthat your vehicle will evolve as youdevelop more skills and a betterunderstanding of the type of driving youwill be doing.

Newer drivers tend to feeloverwhelmed. There are just so manyvariables to consider. They fret: Whatmodifications should I make? What do Ineed to get the vehicle ready for off-roaddriving? These are good questions, andare best answered when you know moreabout the type of driving you will bedoing; how you will use the vehicle andwho will ride with you.

But first, I want to assure you thatthese concerns and feelings are natural. All, or nearly all, new drivers go throughthis stage. Heck, I did. It was many yearsago, and it took many years of driving toreally understand how best to deck out anew vehicle to fit my needs. In fact, eventoday, I continue to make minormodifications over the course of avehicle’s lifetime.

As with any hobby, money is anissue. And, yes, you can spend aboatload on your vehicle (both buyingand modifying). Keep in mind that it ispossible to enjoy this fascinating hobbywith a modest budget. There is nothingwrong with keeping your vehicle stock. Most vehicles are pretty darn capable intheir stock form. Most of us however, can’t leave it alone and decide to makesome modification.

Rule 1 Make a decision and run

with it. Too often new drivers get caughtup in “paralysis by analysis,” and nevertake the first step. You need to assureyourself that you’re going to make a

generally sound decision. The vehicleyou purchase and the accessories youadd to it will allow you to drive undermost conditions.

Rule 2 Part of being a newbie

four-wheeler is understanding that youdon’t know much about four wheeling.

On top of that, youdon’t know what youdon’t know. And youprobably already asked10 people what to doand you now have 11alternatives. But youknow enough—especially about yourcurrent goals—to atleast get started.

Rule 3 Don’t be

shy about makingmistakes. We all do. Thebest mistakes makegood fodder around thecamp fire. At some point

you will realize that your vehicle is just theway you need it to be. Until then, you willstill enjoy countless hours of off-roaddriving.

Rule 4 Understand that you can’t

optimize everything, if your budget onlyallows a gradual build up. In addition, your needs and decisions change withexperience which may well cause you toredo an earlier build. The key is to get outon the trails. Remember you can sell thatold stuff on eBay!

Rule 5 One of the fundamental

rules of 4-wheel drive decision making is

the more analysis you dothe more the solution willseem like a compromise.Don’t settle for ½-waysteps even if it meansyou do less now. If youwanted 35” tires you willnever be happy with 33”tires even if you can doeverything you want withyour vehicle on 33’sincluding the Rubicontrail.

Rule 6 How much

will the other decisionmaker in my family let mespend?

Bottom line Assume that your

vehicle will evolve over time; you’re notcapable of making all those decisionsright from the start. Assume, too, thatyou will replace your vehicle at least onetime. With the second vehicle you’ll be ina much better position to know what youwant and the most optimal way to getthere within your budget.

How long will this process take? That varies with the person, and dependson how often the person drives andwhere. You might be driving for a year ortwo before modifying. Or, you may findafter just a couple off-road excursions

What you plan to do impacts your need for modifications if any. This one rock is the only thing in your way to get to the campsitepictured to the left

that your vehicle needs furthermodification. That’s normal.

This article is a pep talk, not acookbook. If you have a sure-fire recipefor building up a vehicle and canconvince me of that fact, I will publish it!Good luck!

The direct speaking Robert Murray pulledno punches when he addressed theBluefield Coal show in West Virginia

September 11, 2013.The CEO of Murray Energy, one of

America’s largest coal producers, had a lot tosay; and the word “impeachment” was one ofthem during a hard-hitting keynote speech tothe coal mining industry, as well as to the restof America.

Murray warned that Obama‘s disastrousenergy policies are leading America to aEuropean model of energy poverty asevidenced by huge price spikes to consumersin Britain and Germany…

“They are destroying low cost electricity inAmerica for everyone, including our citizens onfixed incomes and our manufacturers of productsthat compete in the global marketplace.European countries, particularly Germany wentthis route with disastrous consequences.”

He backed up Germany’s energy plightwith: “Germany spent 194 billion in the past10 years on their “green” Obama experiment,

including 10.2 billion in subsidies for solaralone. The result is German electric priceshave jumped 61% and 15% of German familieslive in energy poverty.” . . . All of theirpredictions on the cost of solar and windpower were understated five-fold”

“To make up for German’s energyshortfall created by the loss of nuclear powerand the inefficiency of ‘green’ electricity,Germany is currently building 23 new coal-fired electricity generating plants.”

Great Britain is another canary in the“green” mineshaft as their citizens strugglewith huge price increases in electricity: “Theirelectricity prices have risen more than 70%since 2005. Further, electricity prices areexpected to increase another 54% by 2020.” . .. and other European countries are now facedwith power black outs. Mr. Obama, hissupporters and most democrats in Congresswill not recognize this.”

Murray pointed the spotlight on theactual damage these Obama “green” policies

will wreak on America: “Mr. Obama’sEPA alone will destroy much ofAmerica’s economy, resultingin the loss of 2.15 million jobsand nearly 200 billion inelectricity rate increases by 2020,

according to recent expert studies.”If there is a keystone to modern society,

it is the availability of relatively cheap andabundant energy. And Murray spelled it out:“Low cost electricity is a staple of life.

This column is reprinted with

EPA Abuse.com

President Obama and his radical appointeesare generating a huge crisis for America in whatthey are doing to the cost and reliability ofelectric power for our citizens.”

Murray put a personal tie into why he isso passionate about Obama’s disastrousenergy policies:

“Mr. Obama’s actions are a human issueto me, as I know the names of manyAmericans whose jobs and family livelihoodsare being destroyed as he appeases his radicalenvironmentalist, unionist, liberal elitistHollywood character and other constituents. These folks are my employees.

“These good Americans only want towork in honor and dignity. But when theirjobs and those of their neighbors are eliminatedin the coal mining areas of America, they haveno one to sell their homes to, which isgenerally their only possession. Thus thesepeople, who only want to work, areprohibited from doing so and fall to thenegative side of the economic ledger for therest of their lives. This is not the America thatI have always cherished.”

Robert Murray ominously closed out hisspeech with a warning to the President andthose who insist on taking America down apath that will eventually lead to disaster forthe country:

“Many prominent Americans are nowdiscussing the need to impeach PresidentObama…maybe you will want to be a part ofthis effort.” This article originally appeared atIrishCentral.com and is reprinted on EPAAbuse.com with permission. E

Back in the late 60’s my mom and dad had all of us kids riding dirt bikes. We would take a two week vacation every summer and play in the Alvord desert on the east side of Steensmountain in Southeast Oregon. We grew up, had families of our own and we take our kids to Alvord every year. This is a photo taken last September of my sister Kricket and her husbandLarry, one of their daughters Jackie, her husband Michael, their son and daughter Josiah and Hailey, my wife Jocelyn by our Jeep and our dog Samantha. Mom and Dad are no longer withus, but I’m sure they are in Heaven looking down and seeing what they started. We even spread their ashes over there, that’s what they wanted and of course we took a long weekend tospread them and play in the desert we so dearly love! — Photo by David Ruppel, Christmas Valley OR Turn the page for more Back to the Desert memories!

E ver since I was a little kid I had been reading about desert racing, about how long the races were and

how hard they were. I read everything I

could find on them, I mean everything

and I read it over and over and over. The

things I read about were, bike setup, pit

stops, riding techniques, what to eat,

what to drink, everything. I also read

about one other fact that stuck in my

mind, but I will get to that later in the

story

Finally, when I turned 16 my Dad

took my brother and me to a desert race.

The race was 120 miles, three 40-mile loops. This was way back when

bikes had four inches of travel in the rear and seven in the front. I had a

1972 Yamaha DT2 Enduro, it had been radically ported, it had a larger

carburetor and a pipe and for that time it was extremely fast, it could

easily beat a 360, but it was only fast until you hit a big bump or bush.

Then you went over the handlebars.

Anyway, we arrived Saturday evening and went to sleep. Sunday

morning we got up and went to the rider’s meeting. There were a lot of

people there and I started to get a little bit scared. There were at least

200 riders and

this was my first

race ever.

However, by the

time the rider’s meeting was over I was going

to be more than scared I was going to be

terrified. It started out okay. This guy got up

in the back of a truck and started talking

about course markings, danger markings, etc

and then at the end of the meeting, he stated,

“This sport is dangerous. You can get hurt

and even killed.” I kind of knew this, but

somebody saying it is a bit di!fferent than

“kind of knowing it” and then the next few

words terrified me. Right after the danger

thing, he says these immortal words “who wants to

volunteer to bring the heads back into town?” Now

a few years later and I won’t say how many I

realized he was talking about the porta-potties, but

right then, I did not. The guy just finished saying

you can get killed doing this and then he says

“Who is going bring back the ‘heads’ back into

town?” I jumped to a conclusion, I thought, holy

crap, this sport is a lot more than just dangerous,

they don’t even bring back whole bodies, just the

heads. I guess I thought if you crashed going real

fast all that was left of you was your head or maybe

they couldn’t bring back a whole body on a

motorcycle, so they just put the heads in a sack and

rode back with them.

I realize it’s hard to believe I thought this, but

I’m from Iowa and this was my first race, what can I

say. The guy also mentioned something about how

the start was going to be, but by that time I had quit

listening and missed this part, but as you will see

this actually helped me a bit.

Okay, back to the race. I was late getting to the

start and as I rode up behind the start line, I noticed

everyone was standing in front of their bike

straddling the front wheel, this was the part I had

missed at the end of the rider’s meeting. It was a

straddle the front wheel dead engine start. I looked

to the left and noticed they had the flag up in the air,

meaning they were about to drop it and start the

race. So, here is the situation: All the other riders

were standing in front of their bikes straddling their

front wheels with their engines not running and

there I was on a bike with the engine running,

wheels rolling and going about 20 mph when all of

sudden they dropped the flag. I hesitated a second,

but I was no fool, so I gassed it and took off. If

anybody noticed that I had unintentionally cheated

at the start, I never knew, because I was flat gone!

There I was, a boy from Iowa in my first desert

race and I was in first place. I accelerated and

continued to upshift and real quick I was topped out

in fifth gear. Then I hit a bush and over the bars I

went. I jumped up and ran back to the bike, picked it

up and took off, I wasn’t in first anymore, but close.

I got back up to speed and again I was topped out

in fifth and then I hit another bush and this time I

really flew. I crawled back to my bike and hid behind

it. Every now and then I would peek over the top of

the seat, but I would duck every time I saw someone

coming. When it was safe, I picked up the bike and

took off. I was not last, but I was way back in the

pack. Now even though I was way back, I was not

worried. I knew I could still win this race. That’s

right: Win! Because of that one other fact that was

stuck in my head. I had read that in a lot of these

desert races the winner would average 30 mph.

My First Desert RaceBY CRAIG RENS

When I read this I thought, “no problem,

my bike could easily do 80 mph and in the

desert it’s easy to do 30 mph.” So I put

my strategy to work. No matter what the

terrain was like, I did my best to maintain

30 mph, no slower and also no faster

because the stories I had read said

“average 30 mph and you will win.”

I would be in these big sand washes

just putting along and these guys would

be passing me like I was standing still. I

thought to myself, how foolish, because

with my strategy I would pass them back

quite soon. I finished the first loop and I

was kind of getting worried. My strategy

didn’t seem to be working, but heck I still

had 80 miles to go. I was getting really

worried by the time I had finished the

second loop. I came into the pits for gas

and my Dad told me some crushing news.

He said that I should just quit because

the leaders had finished the race already.

I asked “How is this possible?” He

didn’t answer the question and he

continued on saying that not only had

the winners finished, they had picked up

their trophies, packed up and left for

home. Right then I realized something

that I had started to think about when

these guys would pass me in the sand

washes like I was standing still. To

average 30 mph or whatever speed, you

had to go like crazy in the smooth

sections to make up for the rough

sections.

I didn’t quit and I took off and rode

the last 40 mile loop, I rode as fast as I

could and passed a few guys back.

Obviously I didn’t finish very well.

When the race was over, I told my dad

and brother that we needed to pack up

and leave real quick, but I didn’t tell them

why. But the fact was that I didn’t want

to see anybody bring back a head from

somebody that had crashed during the

race. Though I really wasn’t that worried

since nobody had volunteered at the

rider’s meeting to bring them back and I

knew why. Who in the world would want

to pick up people’s heads and haul them

back into town?

On May 29, 2013, there was a big reunionfor some of the top enduro riders from the1960’s & 1970’s. About 26 riders attended. Mostof those attending rode bikes with 4” of travel ifthey were lucky. This was held at TomSpurlock’s home in Yorba Linda. He had itcatered with some super tacos and burritos!

We had so much talent, determinism, andskill at this gathering. Tom said that six monthsago, he couldn’t have imagined this all comingtogether the way it did. The attendees camefrom many states. Some flew in from Hawaii

and Oklahoma. Others drove from Arizona,Utah, and several California cities.

We had a great time catching up withbuddies from the past - a memory Tom said hewould have for a long time. Some hadn’t seeneach other for 35 years! Tom wanted to thankeveryone for attending and was happy havingeveryone at his home. Tom said he would tellhis boys about the racing days from time totime, and now they can put some faces with thenames.

There were a lot of picture contributions

so we had a great photo evening. There weresome pictures that everyone was trying toidentify who they were - with some measure ofsuccess.

Tom said he had a hard time getting tosleep afterwards, trying to get his mind to stopthinking about all the conversations and newthings he learned. It was so incredible, after allthese years.

One of the “younger” riders Dave Grahammade a special effort to attend after getting outof the hospital from a motorcycle injury. He

was raised as a Trials rider (late 60’s thru mid70’s) and rode in the same club as Dave Evans. When he saw that Dave Evans was going to bethere he really wanted to make it. Dave G said ithad been about 35 years since he last seen anyof the Dave Evans family and it was so muchfun to talk with Dave. Dave G can’t wait toshare some stories with his father (RogerGraham) who rode his Trials bike at several ofthe more difficult Enduro’s way back when. “Ifyou ever remember Dave Evans bringing“Trials Guys” out to some Enduro’s, it waslikely my father. He was one of the guyspassing a hundred or more riders at a time atthe bottlenecks as they plonked around themayhem on their lightweight nimble bikes.”

While we were at the reunion, Dave Edialed up Donna and Dave G got to speak withher. Dave G was so happy that he could re-unitewith a good friend from his teens.

The reunion flew by like a flash foreveryone there. It was so much fun, they allwant to do it again!!

Those attending were: Dave Evans, MikeAdams, Mike Godfrey, Bob Lindgren, DickKnapp, Jay and Doug Tullis, Larry Langley, Danand John Knous, Roy Watson, Dave and LauraMatus, Scott McKenzie, Ron Alves, Ron Fry,Tim Elliott, Grant and Garner Palenske, MikeSterling, Larry Curl, Dick Varner, Fred Hayesand of course Tom Spurlock.

Others invited but not able to come wereDebbie Evans Levitt, Donna Evans, RickMunyon, Bob Nickelsen and Jerry Counts.

A first trip to remember. I’d heard of Glamis from those in the Sunset truck club with the 4X4 trucks but had never been.Purchased a dune buggy and got it to run. My friend Brian asked what we were doing on Thanksgiving. We had dinner plans butthe rest of the 4 day weekend was free. He said, “I’m going to Glamis with some friends, want to go?” We said, “Sure and we havea buggy now too.” He said “Great so do I and my friends, lets meet after dinner.” Followed my friend as I didn’t know whereGlamis was, how far or what roads. Old highway 111 was very dark and lots of big dips. We came to Brawley, got some gas andon to the dunes. Looking ahead I remember seeing what I thought was a four-lane highway we were approaching, so manyheadlights and tail lights. Where the heck are we? I wondered. Then discovered it was Sand Highway. I looked down on CompHill as we drove by, saw an amazing amount of peoplethere, fires, fireworks and so many toys. We made it to thewashes to find other friends to camp with. Brian unloadedhis buggy to search for more friends and I jumped in.Found his friends really fast, they went to get trucks andjoin us. Then Brian “popped the clutch” and I was nowlooking at the moon . . . we were on two wheels! Ourbuggy ran like crap that trip but those new friends madethe trip great. That was 26 years ago and I’m still hooked.— Jim Colln, Bellflower CA

On a hot Labor Day Sunday, Pala Racewayraced the fourth round of their six round series,The Motocross Majors. Commencing in April

with the Spring Fling round, we are now into the PalaAmateur Championship round. The next two and finalrings in the series will be the Oktoberfast on Octobertwelfth and thirteenth, closing out with the ChristmasCup on December fifteenth. End of the summer time inSouthern California produced a very warm day, butmost everyone seems to be educated on watering upon these dry heat spells, let's race.

Fly Racing's Brandon Hernandez emerged asthe leader on lap two of the 85-150 (9-11) and 85-150(12-13) inter-class moto one, North County Yamaha/bLU cRU's Gavin Leachman in second with animpatient Kaeden Kniffing on his case, and Kniffinggoes by for second. Heranandez stretching out thegap as we wheel into lap four of the fifteen minutemoto makeup, Kniffing keeps the push on sevenseconds behind, Leachman maintaining contact inthird. Late in the race Hernandez has suddenlyslipped back to third and Kniffing jumps into the pointwith Leachman moving into second. The racers flythrough the checkers positioned in between thegrandstand jumps as Pro Taper's Knffing wins,Leachman second, and Hernandez third.

Mike Sandoval racing in the 85-150 (12-13)assaults the pack and rifles into the moto two lead onlap one, with Kniffing running close but starts to fall offthe pace slightly and Sandoval opens up a two

second notch. Leachman needsto finish ahead of Kniffing androlls on the throttle and goesinto second overall in motoand first in class. Leachmanmarries up with Sandoval by theend of lap three with Kniffing keepingup the pace in third less than threeseconds behind Leachman.Hernandez is off the pace andin a battle for fourth withManuel Moreno. Stickingto his game Leachmandigs the spurs into hismachine over a triplepast the doublingSandoval on lap six.Kniffing in a desperateattempt to keep up, airshis own dramatic jumppass to get by Sandovalfor second and immedi-ately puts the attack onLeachman.

Leachman closes thedoors on Kniffing on thewhite flag and brings homethe moto win, Knffing passesthrough the checkers insecond. Reading the small

labels onLeachman's jersey, thisreporter has Sandoval third inmoto and Hernandez fourth.Wrapping up the top three overall inthe 85-150 (9-11) with Leachman (2-1) first, Kniffing (1-2) second, andHernandez (3-3) third. The top threeoverall for the upper classman goesSandoval (1-1) first, BraydenLessler (2-2) and Zach Walker (3-3)third. Hernandez paid back thecompetitors shutting down thecompetition with a 1-1 for theSupermini overall win, Kniffing (2-2), and Brayden Lessler (4-3) third.

Southland Racing/BTO Motorsports/Alias/Rocket Exhaust trackman Tallon LaFountaine

seemed to take out his frustrations on his fellowcompetitors, having a rip-roaring day that

had just one flub, getting to the linelate in his first moto of the 250Intermediate. He fixed itquickly flying through thepack and placed himselfsecond in class, thenmade the line on time for amoto two win and theoverall. Running faster orat the same pace of thePro's all day,LaFountaine went on toput the hurt to his

classmates with a 1-1 inthe Schoolboy for the

overall victory, and stickinganother 1-1 for the OpenIntermediate win as well. Avery successful day forLaFountaine, finishing up withhis own brand of a moto-trifecta. Giving muchrespect to his speedybrothers of the past, JoshLaFountaine who rocked hisshare of wins a few yearsago, and late brother,

Jeagher LaFountaine.Jeagher died tragically at the

age of eighteen in May of2010, and was in the

midst of an upsurgetowards motoexcellence at the time.

Front and centerhere comes Tallon with

his after-burners lit, the teenager is coming on strong inthe moto world. Having an excellent showing at a2013 California Gold Cup held at Glen Helen againsta very strong field, this human jet pack is ready to bethe next big thing from Southern California. Receivinghis first motocrosser for Christmas in 2011, he hasbeen a quick learner skipping the Beginner ranks hewent straight to Novice. Racing in the 250 C (Novice)Modified at the 2012 AMA Amateur Nationals, hefinished first in moto one and ended up with a ninthoverall, also placing sixth in the 450 C. On to thespeedy world of the Intermediate (B class), qualifyingfor the 2013 AMA Amateur Nationals he finished aworthy twelfth place overall in the 450 B Limiteddespite the muddy conditions. Appreciating theindividual attributes of motocross where personalcommitment and sacrifice determines the outcome, thewell spoken teenager will be in the Intermediate classfor 2014, racing at most Amateur Nationals. He wouldlike to thank Mom and Dad, Randy Lawrence,Casey Johnson, and all his backers. The nextSouthern California standout, this reporter thinks.

The weather was perfect for racing at the PrairieCity OHV Park on a Saturday night in late August. Not too hot during the day and by the end of the

heats the sweatshirts started coming out. The tracks, both a perfectly groomed short track and a TT trackprovided an excellent racing surface for riders rangingfrom young Lane Redding, just 5 years old, showinga tenacious spirit and whole lot of natural talent, tothose over 40 in the 40+ senior class. In spite of aless than abundant rider count the competition on thetrack was close and very exciting.

With a whole array of rewards for the winnersthat included some wonderful gifts from TLD and Oakley,as well as gift certificates from several local retailersand trophies for those that wanted them. The Vet miniclass started the short track main events with ridersfrom Napa, Rodeo, San Rafael, San Francisco andSacramento. After a third place finish in the heat raceChris Smith got the hole shot and rode the main outfront from pole to pole ahead of Kevin Holman who hadfinished the heat race in front. Michael Mannion roundedout the podium with his third place finish main eventfinish. Mannion was back on the track to finish first inboth the heat and main of the 150 production class.

Brett Voorhees, Rylee Gallagher, Wyatt Maes, and Bobby Stellfox III rode both the heat and main inthat order. Voorhees and Maes then finished one-two inthe youth 150/85 class and Voorhees finished secondbehind Mannion in the 150 Production event.

Holman, Smith and Mannion were competingagain in the nine rider 230 class. After riding the tractorand the water hose, Brok McAllister joined thiscompetition too. At the end of ten laps, Holman wasfirst to cross the finish line followed by Smith andMannion. McAllister finished fourth followed by SteveCoscarelli. Coscarelli and Wyatt Marshall tradedpositions three times during the ten lap duel.

Competition was fierce in the Open DTX class.Gage McAlister who is currently also competing inAMA Road Racing aboard a Folsom HarleMityDavidson sponsored Harley Davidson XR1200 finishedeighth in the Indianapolis GP August 16th. Tonight hetook the lead off the start line staying in front of heat racewinner Mitch Gallagher to finish first. Gallagher finishedbehind McAllister (and Brok McAllister, Gage’s dad,was also in the money finishing third. Michael Mannionand three others followed.

A short break took place while the track wasmagically transformed into a stellar TT configuration.Excitement resumed with the 65/125 youth class thatalso included Lane Redding although Redding was ridinghis own Pee Wee class finishing first. During the firstlap young rider Bobby Stellfox III who finished secondin the heat race crashed bringing out the red flag and avisit to the paramedics. We wish him well. On therestart Voorhees took the lead again to show Maes andGallagher the fast way around the track. Bill Giltnershowed Chris Smith and Anthony Farris the way tothe Sr. 40+ checkers.

This night the 230 class had the biggest ridercount on the start line. Holman rode like a pro to stay

in front of Gage McAllister in the 230 classafter capturing the lead in the first lap.Marshall rode in the third place throughlap three when Brok McAllister was ableto secure the third spot after getting aroundsome carnage that left Marshall in theninth position. Smith held the fourth placeall eight laps to finish in front of Gallagherand was back on the track. Smithcompleted the super moto class in thefront of the pack and Voorhees continuedhis trophy march earning top honors inthe three TT classes against hiscompetitors.

The Open DTX event was exciting to watch asGage McAllister left the start in front at the green light.Dad, Brok, was on him through all ten laps workingthe track, looking for the opportunity to take the frontspot. Behind them Marshall was pushing through theturns to maintain his third position while hoping for achance to move closer to the lead. Joey Hrenkoheld tight piloting his machine in laps two through tenin fourth. McAllisters, Gage and Brok finished firstand second with Marshall rounding out the podium.

Holman also earned another first place in theVet mini class and Gage McAllister finished out thenight winning the Open DTX class.Information for the next DTX race is available atwww.prairiecitydirttrack.com/racing .

5 year old Cole Timboe has been all but unstoppable this season

W ith a great season of racing thefinal round will be the mostimportant for all classes!

Except of course the Pee Wee classwhich has been dominated by 5-year-oldCole Timboe. Cole had already beenracing for two years when lining up forhis first National Youth Hare and Houndand took three wins in a row right off thebat. Half way through the season hestarted to get some seriouscompetition but he already had 90points under his belt.

In the Girls class USDR RacerCaitlyn Kurtz started the season offstrong with two wins over her maincompetition of Checkers MC’s TaylorOlivas (who would be backed up byher two younger sisters). StartingRound 3 Rachel Stout fromUtah started following theseries and continued witha five race win streak.A bad accident overthe summer left herwith a stressfractured vertebra butshe is still within strikingdistance of Kurtz who only holds an18 point lead. With a full month tillthe finale Stout may be able to getclearance for the final round.

The Micro 65cc class is a nailbiter with Mason Klein holding a29 point lead over his maincompetitor Cody Glover but withthrow-aways its tighter than itmay look. While that would be atough score to beat it is stillpossible. Glover started theseason off with two wins in arow and followed it with twosolid second place finishes. IfGlover has any hopes of takingthe title he will have to win andKlein will have to finish outsidethe top 3 which with his strongfinishes is unlikely.

The JR Mini 85cc class has alsobeen a nail biter with James Thomasand Mason Matthies going back andforth all season. Thomasholds on to a nine pointlead but again with throw-aways its going to betight. If Matthies takes thewin he gets the title. Thereare 100 different ways itcan work out with howtight these two are!James Thomas is one ofmany Checkers MC racersthat are dominating theseries.

The Super Mini classis probably the mostintense with 3 riders thatcould potentially comehome with the #1! JarrettMegla has his first win,and the momentum behind

him after Round 9, in Nevada but is nowhere nearsafe from the Utah duo of Braydon Bland andKolton Christensen. Bland has been nearlyunstoppable until recently taking three wins onthe season. Christensen has always been rightthere but has missed two rounds this season.Even if Megla wins the finale he will still not besafe as the points are so close! All Bland will needto do is finish second to guarantee the #1 plate,

even if Megla wins, Bland will take itby one point. Our nails are almost

gone already! All Champions will be crowned

at the Round 10 Awardsceremony October 12 in

Lucerne Valley, alongwith the release of the

2014 number andcolor designationsfor the NationalYouth Series.

Round eight of the twelve event SCFTA (Southern California Flat Track Association) Championship series rostered in at just over one-hun-

dred racers, off by over twenty racers compared to thetwo previous rounds, which some attributed to the heat. The Youth program maintains an inspiring growth andinterest which presents a positive outlook for the future ofFlat Track racing. The plans are still in place for the annualFriday night race, "The Night Before the Finals." Sched-uled to slide on October 11, the yearly race is held atPerris Raceway the night before the last round of the AMAGrand National Championship at Pomona. AMA frontrunners like Brad Baker, Sammy Halbert, Mike Rushand Henry Wiles have made cameos at the popular Perrisquarter mile loop. Want to see some of the fastest slidersaround but in a local scene, this is your race.

On a more important note, long time SCFTA racerJoe Steffen, was not feeling well after practice and was

taken to the hospital, having a heart attack while intransport. He was reported to have been stabilized aftera seven way bypass. S&S Off Road sends theirthoughts to the family and will keep them in prayer.

Senior Vet 50+ Expert Jim Ottele came off the lineand broke into lap one with the lead, John Perez slid intosecond and Larry Earhart third. Ottele put all his experi-ence to work, holding Perez's force at bay. Perezclosed in a few times but just could not get by the powerof Ottele who wins, Perez for second. The inter-classline had Senior Vet 50+ Amateur racer Corey Baumanthreatening third place Earhart. Bauman came into thelast lap going inside of Earhart, but Earhart appeared tocross in front of Bauman blocking him for the third, Baumanfourth in race and first in class.

K&N Filters Jeremy Templeman isn’t unfamiliar toracing, but most of his past experience involved compe-titions like the annual Grand Prix's of Lake Elsinore and

Soboba. Taking a flat track racingcourse this year and with the wise-of-ways tips from Jim Rosa, he isquickly becoming a force. His bestplacing was third at round four so hewas on a quest for his first win in hisdebut season of Flat Track. BrandonWatters was the dominator in theOpen Amateur, maybe too dominantas he has been moved up a classwith his points as well.

Having a good heat race, OpenNovice racer Templeman was in apositive state as the nine racer Maingreen light lit up. Templeman jumpsinto the front with nothing but spacein front of him, Scott Hanson in sec-ond a few bike lengths back as Greg

Powell moved in for the second place challenge.Templeman starting to slip away as Powell races intosecond but Hanson is close behind. Jim Bandelin fourthas a battle brews between him and Paul Claybaugh. On lap five Templeman is styling and sensing the winwith just over a two second lead, as Hanson is busywith Powell and retakes second, Powellthird. An excited Templeman blazes in forhis first SCFTA win, Hanson keeps a gripon second, Powell third, Claybaugh slidesby Bandelin for fourth, and Bandelin fifth.

Arai/Axtell’s John Kocinski holds thetrack record at 14.06 seconds according totrack statistician and announcer extraordinaire,Jamey Blunt. Racing for his first time in fourmonths he was on a Mr. Ed Honda framerand looking fine after his heat win. The largerpicture is the series points chase with NickGil at a five point margin over Nick Armstrongand Dylan Morin in third, one point in rear ofArmstrong. Not on the line, Gil is currentlygoing to school and Morin was disqualifiedfrom the Main according to the results, so thedoor is wide open for Armstrong to win thechampionship.

Kocinski streaks outoff the line and into the pointas the resurging Ian Fouldscontinues to pick up speedby the round in second,Armstrong third. On lapfour Kocinski still at the pointbut unable to shake Foulds, third place Armstrong justback of Foulds, and PaulOtt fourth. The midwaymark sees Kocinski gap-ping a two second windowover Foulds with Armstrongstill in back of Foulds, PaulOtt is fading back slightlyin fourth. On lap fourArmstrong goes down andwith that a chance to take asizeable lead in the Propoints. Armstrong remountsand Paul Ott takes his billet. With four laps remainingKocinski now holds over a sixsecond gap on Foulds, Ott inthird. Kocinski keeps it cleanand gets the win, Foulds sec-ond, Paul Ott third, RobertBush fourth, and Will Ott fifth.Armstrong taking the check-ers in sixth and now holds aneight point lead over Gil andsixteen over Morin.

TTTTThe American Motorcyclist Association’s (AMA) 15thAnnual Southern California ChampionshipMotocross (So Cal MX) Series, held its swan song

round under warm sunny blue skies, signifying an end tothe seven round summer series. The schedule waschanged to a mostly Saturday format after racers voted in2012 on which day fit their schedule best. Two days ofconsecutive racing was eliminated for this year and fourraces were held on Saturday.

Four Aces M.C. President Greg Meyers and hisracing wife Teri Meyers have played an integral part ofAMA So Cal MX series the past few years with Gregwho is sponsored by Mad Jack Racing, serving thisyear as the Vice Chairman and Race Day Commis-sioner, while AMS Oil's Teri Meyers stepped in as theseries secretary. Greg has been involved with riding allhis life, desert racing for over ten years, add in five yearson the motocross scene. Teri has been receiving thegreen flag for over eight years and is now geared up on aHonda CRF450X. Both of them proved their moto forti-tude by finishing the hot humid three moto day at Mile-stone, with Greg securing a fourth overall in the Senior40+ C, and Teri finishing second in the Women 30+ A.Greg stepped on the box in four of the seven rounds forSenior 40+ C Championship, Teri came in second inthe Women's 30+ A series standings. Exemplifying theteam spirit of the series, Greg concluded the interviewby thanking all the Four Aces, all officers and officials ofthe AMA So Cal MX series, and all the District-37racers and organizations.

Axo/Pacific Yamaha's Walker Harrison edgedinto the last round with a scant two point lead overTREmx.com/Bayer/One Industries racer Zach Teno inthe 250 B. The 250 B moto one saw Teno slam thepack with the lead as if to say, this is my race guys. After a bad start, Harrison found himself trying to forcehis way into the top five as Teno left him behind for thewin, Harrison came away with a fourth, needing magicto stay up Teno, who appeared to be on a mission.

In moto two Harrison held the upper card withthe early lead but Teno was right behind marking him, eventually making the pass for the moto two win and250 B overall. Harrison finished up in fourth in moto twoand fourth overall for the day. Teno finished the 250 BChampionship with a seven point margin over secondplace Harrison, Teno also won six rounds for the Kingof the District B series title. Harrison did not go homeempty handed however, with the Open B title, as wellas cutting his teeth in the Sidehack class with the oldsalt, Chris Johnson. Racing for eight years, Teno cur-rently holds the Big 6 Grand Prix series points lead in theLightweight I Intermediate, he would like to give a specialthank you to Kelsey and will continue to race on for 2014.

Maxima Oils/One Industries/Sunline's CaseyLangosh took it to his classmen on this day with the OpenC overall win, putting the stops to the field in both motos.Moving on to the 250 C, he put down a win in moto onecoupling with a third in moto two for a second overall.Racing five rounds in both classes respectively, he pro-duced first place perfection in the Open C, securing four offive rounds contested in the highly competitive 250 C forseries titles in both ranks respectively. Racing for overfive years, the So Cal MX 2012 Supermini A numberone, is reportedly on the big bikes for his first completeyear and obviously adapting well. His 2014 blueprint hashim stepping into the B (Intermediate) class with selectedAmateur Nationals on the schedule, and a qualifying at-tempt at Loretta Lynn's Amateur National Champi-onship. Assisting his assault will be his Mom,Dad, and sister Christina managing the crew, thank-ing them all as his roost continues.

Twelve-year-old Dylan Delgado caught themoto bug at the now closed Los Angeles CountyRaceway over nine years ago, and looks to befollowing in his brother Andrew Delgado Jr’s, win-ning ways. His brother won three AMA So CalMX titles combined in 2011 and 2012. DylanDelgado made quick inroads to his brother's mark, winning all six rounds he raced, for the big rednumber 1 in the 85 A (12-15). Racing with the bigbikes in King of the District C, he prevailed for titletwo. For 2014 Dylan Delgado will be racing theSupermini and the 125 2-Stroke.

All in the moto family Tony Bienert Racing'sTony Bienert, his daughter Alyssa, and son Troyhave been teaming up since 2011 and it is startingto look like a lot of gold. Tony Bienert has won

several titles over the years with the most recent being the30+ A in 2009 and 2010. Breaking his hand in 2011, hehas returned in full force with four overall wins and threesecond place finishes for the Senior 40+ A title. AlyssaBienert had two. She is one fast racer and proven cham-pion Nicole Dorsey missed a round while Alyssa Bienertkept taking the green and the Women's 12+ A Champion-ship is all hers. Zip Ty Racing/AMS Oil's Troy Bienertwore the number one from his 2012 65 B (7-11) title, addedanother title to his resume as he stuck it out in the full sevenrounds, winning twice, and getting on the box four timesfor the 65 A (7-11) corona. Reportedly but unable to confirmso I will go out on a limb here, it looks like the Fergusonfamily had four championships within their family, LauraFerguson in the Women's 30+ A, Chris Ferguson in theVet 30+ C, Aidan Ferguson in the 65 B (7-11), and LoganFerguson in the 50 Pee-Wee (4-6).

Many stars amongst the AMA So Cal MX fieldsuch as Jesse Lundin. In the rounds seen by this reporterLundin never had it easy having to roost his way througha myriad of competitors, doing just that for the King of theDistrict A and the 250 A titles. Jeremy Lasater brought

home the Open crown following through for the Heavy-weight A as well.

VVVVVintage and post-vintage motocross racingreturned to Cahuilla Creek MX for round two ofthe 2013 CALVMX/AHRMA/100% racing

series. Popular with the vintage racing community, theexpertly modified vet track stood ready for the classicracing machines filling the pit area.

Former Honda and Kawasaki factory sponsoredracer Tommy “Tomahawk” Croft was the day’s honoredguest as a legend of motocross. An image from hisfactory racing days was featured on the commemorativecups presented to the days’ class winners.

A variety of machines occupied the pit area duringthe day. Bikes ranging in size from the small 100ccmachines of the Marty Tripes 100cc Revenge Classesto the formidable 500cc two-strokes were readied foraction prior to the riders meeting and practice periods.Included on the day were the three wheeler racers.Begun as a club experiment to test the viability ofoffering a class for the long out of production vehicles, the division has grown increasingly popular, with anotable increase in the number of machines of all differentdisplacements broad sliding around the course.

In the two-wheeled segment of racing, actionbegan at a fast pace with the 100cc machines taking tothe course first. Scott Burnworth (Yam) dominated theFactory Flyweight Pro class with a strong first motowin, with Parker Jones (Suz) returning to action afterrecovering from a non-racing related accident. Jeff Kelly(Yam) topped the Factory Flyweight Intermediate classfollowed by Bob Seki (Yam).

Kawasaki mounted Kevin Temple once againtopped the Vintage Sportsman 250 Intermediate division, followed by the Yamaha of Brent Wilkinson and theMaico of Norm Himaka, while in the novice division itwas Jim Barker on a very original looking HondaElsinore.

Racing for machines one era newer than the pre-75 machines featured Brian Tracy (Yam) dominatingthe GP-1-250 Expert division in moto one followed byJeff Kelly (Suz) and Brian Curtis (Mai). While Tracytopped the field in the quarter liter class, Noah Perrydecimated the GP-1 500 Experts in the first moto on hisbrutally fast 440 Maico, with Rick Daniel (Yam) andDave Fisher (Suz) rounding out the top three.

Clark Jones was once again the dominant forcein 50 Plus Vintage Expert. The main man at NoleenRacing returned to his roots and powered his CZ to aconvincing first moto win ahead of Kirk Chapman (CZ)and Ed Zornes (Yam). While Jones was conqueringthe experts, Rick Guilmette (CZ) displayed excellentspeed and added to his win total with a victory in the 50

Plus Intermediates over Kevin Temple (Kaw) and BrentWilkinson (Yam).

Not to be outdone by the two wheelers, the threewheeled classes displayed a totally different style ofracing in their moto. As anyone familiar with thesemachines knows, putting a foot down in a corner issomething to be avoided at all costs. The fastest methodin cornering is a hard power slide with plenty of bodylean to maneuver around the corner. Doing it best in thefirst moto was Jerad Knisely in the 3-Wheeled Open

Stock Intermediate class, Tom Decresente in Stock250 Expert and David Ham in 250 Stock Intermediatewith all three taking first in their respective classes.

Also taking moto victories on the day were Inter-Am veteran Bill Silverthorn in the 60 Plus VintageExperts, Rick Daniel in GP-3 500 Expert and DougReyes in the Open Age GP Expert class.

Unfortunately the day was marred by a torrentialrain storm that struck the area just as the second roundof motos were to start. What had begun as a few

sporadic rain drops quickly evolved into a deluge thatquickly turned the track into a quagmire and the pitareas into something resembling a high desert versionof a bayou! With time rapidly running out, club officialselected to cancel the second set of motos and award allentrants 10 points to their season total.

Rain clouds, overcast, and sporadic showersgreeted the 4th Annual Marty Tripes VintageDays race. One of the highlights of the event

has been a celebration of the motocross greats. Thisyear was the time for the prolific Jones racing family. The patriarch Don Jones, passed away in late July of2008, Mr. Jones was a flat track and road racer, aninventor, a mechanic, a racing coach, and a dad thatfathered one of the greatest racers of all time, four-timeNational 250cc Champion Gary Jones. Mr. Jonesbecame a BSA and Matchless dealer in the late1950's, and in the 1960's he was reportedly the firstYamaha dealer in the USA.

Then there was the Yamaha DT-1 that the Jonesfamily modified with titanium bolts and screws, flattening and extending the swing arm, lowering theengine, an assortment of modifications wereimplemented, causing them to say they had doneeverything to the bike from A to Z. Giving the bike

back to Yamaha with all their modifications intact it laidthe groundwork for the 1974 Yamaha YZ. The familymatriarch, Melinda Jones, is also credited with thepopular red, white and blue Honda jersey. This familyis moto.

Gary, the oldest of the children and still veryactive racing and within the motorcycle industry,Dewayne is a year younger than Gary and can stilldeliver the speed on the flat track, next is Melinda andGary's bookend and the youngest, sister Lois. I haveinterviewed Gary multiple times, and Gary's sonJustin many times as well. Having seen Gary’ssister Lois with her husband Clark Jones for a fewyears now at local races, I thought she had anotherstory to tell. Her dad had originally introduced her toClark Jones and later when they married, no lastname change was required. A former AMA Promotocrosser, Clark has set his mark in the moto worldrunning the former Noleen Sizzler Supercross team

and the current owner of Noleen SuspensionTechnologies.

Talking about the early days Lois recallsmotorcycle parts being everywhere, in the house, kitchen, and in the garage of course. She laughedwhen reminiscing about cleaning oil filters, hundreds oftimes. Touring with Gary, she was with him during theYamaha and Honda Championship runs. After Garybroke his leg at the 1975 Daytona Supercross, Loisremained his trusty confidante. Signed on to Can-AMat the time, when they bought his contract out after theleg injury, Gary and Lois invested the money. Garyalong with his dad bought the Mexican Moto-Islofactory in Mexico, from Frank Cooper. After figuring outa way to manufacture a primo bike, a situation out oftheir control occurred whenthe Mexican peso wasdevalued and the factorywas closed down.

On the road withGary after the factoryclosed down around the mid1970's, Lois was still therefor him as the dependablesister who could tell thedifference between a torquewrench and socket wrench, and cleaning oil filters ofcourse. The top twenty wasthe breaking point for thePro payout in those days,Lois was instructed byGary to put two dollar signson the pit board if he wasout of the bucks. Keepingtrack of his moto standingshe would put the dollarsigns on the chalk board ifhe fell out of the top twenty,Gary would light it up andhooray, gas money for thenext race. While onceeating a cheap meal at a McDonald’s they spied ahappy family celebrating a birthday with all the hooplaand birthday cake. Their forlorn dreamy stares at theparty struck a chord with the group and they weresoon invited over to join the fiesta, and have somecake of course. Behind greatness is a strong woman,Lois is all of that and more!

Speaking of Yamaha YZ's, CALVMX racerDavid MacDonald has an ongoing love affair with themachines. Spending many a late night especiallybefore the races, primping and pandering his little

darlings, viewing preparation and maintenance of hismoto collection just as vital as racing. His 2-Strokestable consists of a 1978 Yamaha YZ 100 (Modern 2-Strk 125 Exp.), a 1985 Yamaha YZ 125 (GP2 125Exp. Modern 2-Stroke), and a 1990 Yamaha YZ250(Single Shock 250 Exp.).

A seasoned desert racer from years gone byhe rode in the historic 1987 Parker 400, getting hismoto on back in the day racing at tracks like Ascot,De Anza, and Saddleback. Dabbling with the modern2-Stroke bikes he was injured in 2007 and took asabbatical but can't keep the moto down. Whileselling a camper to a buddy he viewed a 1978Yamaha YZ 125 on the side of the house that neededmucho TLC, the pony was soon at his house and the

racing bug was back. The next progressive stepwas Vintage racing, and a couple more neglectedscreamers found a happy home and a new life.MacDonald thanks Clark Jones, Troy lee Designs,Q&E Machine, and Lebard and Underwood. WithCastrol oil in his blood and two stroke fumes forcologne, racers like MacDonald keep the two-strokedream alive.

The Jones family’s story is well documented, and its easy and funb to find many more stories ofthe legendary racers on the net.

With the exception of the few UTV racers whohave attempted to race the Baja 500 and theBaja 1000 events and perhaps the BITD Las

Vegas to Reno racers, most of the UTV/Side-X-Sideracers have had little experience in long distance, ardu-ous, man-and-machine-breaking and challenging races. So the entry for the PURE SERIES still remains on thelow side but the effort is anything but 110% as evi-denced by the teams that made the third stop in the 2013Pure Side-X-Side Off-Road Desert Series, staged byveteran promoters Lou and Lois Peralta and their AVERacing staff.

Their experience in “Endurance” racing is illustri-ous and formidable, spanning disciplines from, off-road,grand prix, endurance, watercraft endurance and short-course, motocross and even skateboarding and RCcars.

They have been at the roots of the sport of off-roadendurance racing since it broke out into internationalfame with the Baja races of the early 70’s. At one time, the Peraltas were the biggest promoters of off-road/dirtracing events in Baja California, where it all started.

Cut to the chase. At this 350-miler one nameemerged as the overall and Pro Class 1000cc winner,Branden Sims aboard his Polaris XP900, sponsored byNorthern Arizona ATV & Off-Road, Lone Star Racing,UTV Inc, Rugged Radios, Muzzy’s and Snap-On Tools.Branden and his co-dog, Daniel Wilsford, of Prescott

Valley, AZ were theonly ones to completeall nine laps requiredto cover the 354.6miles of the race. Theyobliterated the entirefield by at least one lapand by a steady per-formance that featuredlap times of 1:04:40

and as quick as 56:57 on their third lap.Second overall and second in the Pro Production

1000 Class was Logan Gastel (Can-Am Commander),sponsored by Summer Brothers Racing, HCR, Rug-ged Radios, ITP Wheels & Tires, Alba Racing, KingShocks, Arrowhead Mechanical, and Can-Am Team X.The Highland, CA racer, Logan, gave his best shot andonce again finished in the runner-up spot but because ofhis steady and deliberate driving style, he currentlyleads the points in the class by a wide margin overKevin Shrive, and by just a mere one point in the overallstandings after three events, over Josh Westling.

Third overall at the “350” went to Josh Westling,Polaris XP900, Starting Line Products (SLP), Cognito, and Westling & Associates-sponsored rocket. Josh, while racing in the Sportsman Production 1000cc classis still able to dice it out with the top pros. He, Gastel andMatt Lasher are currently the three who are going afterthe coveted 1.5K-KUP in this series, signifying thatthey have completed a total of 1500 miles. Two moreevents are left, the upcoming “250” and “400” milers. This award will take place after the series is completedalong with the various class championships.

Speaking of class championships, Matt Lasherappears to be well on his way to capturing that title in thePro 850cc Class. The Kawasaki Teryx 750cc racer, sponsored by Kawasaki, SXSPerformance.com, GRC,OMF, Walker Evans and PRP Seats, leads the class

At the end of the event we listened to some of theracer’s comments and one thing was really obvious:They were shocked, surprised and relieved that theyhad completed the 350-miles or almost completed it.That was more than they had ever experienced. Andthat’s where this series comes in as far as its contribu-tion to the sport: Experience.

Most of the racers in the series had never coveredsuch distances as the Pure Series offers. To date, withthe running of the “200”, the “300” and now the “350”-mile races, covering a total of 850 miles, has buoyedmost of the competitors with the “Yes I can” attitude. With each race they are not only learning how to pacethemselves and keep a steady speed for the long hoursahead, but it has given many of the participants newchallenges in the preparation and set up of their SXS/UTVs. You can hear drivers exchanging ideas at thefinish line, and touting some of their successes as wellas sharing some of their mistakes.

According to Lou Peralta, promoter of the seriesand the man who has opened the doors for many of theracers, “This series had to start somewhere. The equip-ment and racers are too good not to take advantage ofthe ultimate trial of both man/woman and machine. Thiswill be the proving grounds for many of the manufactur-ers to display and fine-tune their product as well as theafter-market producers to see how their equipment worksand lasts in these long-distance events.”

Peralta also added, “We’re a bit disappointed sofar of the turnout but not discouraged. It is a daunting taskto tackle 2, 3, or 400 miles in open desert, where every-thing must work to near perfection in order to complete arace. But that’s how we all learn. We feel strongly aboutthe series’ possibilities and encourage others to tryit…they’ll like it.”

Second overall, at this event Logan Gastel ledthe overall points standings by a mere one pointand is walking away with the Pro Production1000cc Class.

The next event in the five-event Pure SXS Seriesis the September 27-29, 2013, DWT Pure “250” Pre-sented by SXSPerformance.com. A new course iswaiting for the racers who will need to complete six lapsof about 41.5 miles. AVE prides itself in offering newcourses with each event because they feel that chang-ing courses helps the desert recuperate so that whenthey return one of two years later, it will be like a “new”course once again.
