The last thing I want to do when I’mon the final drop-dead deadline forgetting the magazine out, as in the

night before the printer is expecting it thenext morning, is to spend any time at allon the phone.

So when the phone rang and I sawthat it was an 800 number why did Ianswer it?

Even I don’t know the answer tothat question. Then I discovered it was asurvey-taker. What?! How fast can Ihang up? I wondered.

A political survey, he said. Now hehad my attention.

This survey which was about all thefoolish liberal policies in this great statewe live in that is overrun with liberalfools in leadership gave me greatopportunity to express all myfrustrations with the governor, theeconomy, illegal immigration, envirowackos, the works. And then when thesurvey-taker asked my opinion of BarackObama, I couldn’t help myself. I juststarted laughing. And the great thingabout this call? Helaughed right along withme and said “I thoughtyou might feel that way.”

He compared hisstate of Florida to ourstate and he was even inmore distress at thethought of a Jeb Bushpresidency than I wasbecause he’s alreadylived under Jeb Bushleadership right there inhis state.

I may have sounded like I wascontradicting myself at this point.Because earlier when he asked me “Howoften do you vote in presidentialelections?” and I had to choose from hislist of answers: (a) Never, (b) Sometimes,(c) Most of the time and (d) Always. I, ofcourse had said “Always.”

So now he asked me: “If the electionwere today and your choice was JebBush for Republican and Hillary Clintonfor Democrat who would you vote for?”My answer came immediately. “I

wouldn’t vote,” I said. Then of course Irealized how that was totally contradictoryto what I had just told him about alwaysvoting in presidential elections.

“Actually I would vote third party,” Icorrected myself “and I would chooseDonald Trump.”

“You really think that will be achoice?” he asked genuinelycurious.

“If Jeb Bush is the Republicannominee I absolutely do think thatwill be a choice,” I told him andwent on to reiterate “I will eithervote third party or will not vote if

those are the choices.”So after hanging up the phone, two

things occurred to me. What a sad state ofaffairs that this early in the election processthe people who designsurvey questions are alreadyassuming our two choices willbe Clinton and Bush. Andsecondly, if that really is thetotally outrageous outcomeof the primary elections, andTrump runs third party and asall the naysayers predict, theDemocrats win, it will not beTrump’s fault. That I am sureof.

Why, you may ask?Well, was it Trump’s

fault when Romney, the Republicancandidate, didn’t win in 2008? Was itTrump’s fault when McCain, theRepublican candidate, didn’t win in 2004?

No, it wasn’t. So if some namby-pamby, Republican-in-Name-Only (RINO tothose in the know), wimpy, washy,politically correct weakling otherwiseknown as the pseudo-conservativecandidate can’t muster up enough votes to

win, it won’t be Trump’s fault at all even ifhe is listed as a third party candidate. It willbe the fault of the person whomisrepresents the Republican party on theballot. The person who couldn’t get theconservatives excited enough to come outand vote.

And whether you think Trump is theman for the job, and at this point I can’t sayfor sure without a doubt that’s how I’ll votein the primary, one thing none of us candeny, Trump knows how to get peopleexcited. The first presidential debate for the

2016 election cycle broke all non-sporting event viewing records for alltime. With 24 million viewers, this debatetripled the 2012 election debate highviewer record of 7.6 million.

So if nothing else with Trump onthe ballot a record number of voters willvery likely turn out if for no other reasonthan to vote against him. But at leastthey’ll be voting.

I, on the other hand, have beenexcited since the first politically incorrectstatement left his mouth regarding illegalimmigration and continuing on throughhis insults of the ultra liberal pretendconservative McCain and right onthrough his Rosie O’Donnell commentsduring the debate.

Admittedly I knew virtually nothingabout Donald Trump before he formallythrew his hat in the ring so other thanbeing aware the man existed I may havean advantage over people like say, mysister, who said I was causing her bloodto boil because I was even consideringvoting for Trump. She apparently is veryaware of many things he has said and

done in his public lifetime, as aresome friends of mine who also didn’tseem overly excited about the man. The biggest draw to me is his

total unconcern about beingpolitically correct. In fact its toowonderful to just say he is“unconcerned” it’s more like the factthat he takes immense pleasure instating the politically incorrectopinions that many of us share buthave been forced to suppress. What, you may be wondering, as

some of our occasional Facebookfrenemies boldly speak out on our site,does politics have to do with off roading?I say to those who don’t know, it’s nowonder we’re fighting off road legalbattles on a daily basis with so many outthere unaware of the connection.

Putting aside my concern for moral,social and religious political beliefs, thevery fact that virtually 100% ofenvironmental extremists are of theliberal mindset is reason enough to voteconservative. The EPA and EndangeredSpecies Act have worked in concert fordecades to wreak havoc on our industry,

damaging the off road economy as wellas our enjoyment of the sport.

“In conclusion,” I must say directlyquoting Fox News television and radiohost Sean Hannity, “I am glad DonaldTrump is in this race. I like hisstraightforward outsider’s view ofpolitics. His personality and backgroundare impressive and refreshing. I likeanybody who is not politically correct. Ihope his outspokenness and his couragerubs off on his fellow Republicans, whohave all become stale, timid, weak andgenerally (especially in DC) useless.Many Republicans can learn a thing ortwo from Trump.”

And if you’re not yet registered tovote, I hope you will learn a thing or twofrom this article and get registered in timeto vote either for or against DonaldTrump in the presidential primaries.

Oh, my gosh!! Never laughed so hardand so long (with doubled over stomach)in such a long time. Thank you, I’m soglad to know that I’m not the only oneout there. I couldn’t have summed it upany better from a “navigator’s” point ofview. My husband and I “always” startout with excitement and confidence, justeager for another trip! Us too, we havethe print-outs and the Thomas Guidepages marked. But once we’re out there,something happens, maybe its the traffic,or the panic of the unknown, or justtrying to do it “right” this time! (perfecttrip) LOL. We’ll even “laugh” about it at amuch later time, sometimes of years pastevents that could have been disastrous.

So we’ve developed a motto saying“every road leads somewhere!” I alwaystry to smooth over getting lost with, “Sohow about lunch?” Only a few times hasthat worked. It is usually a “very” quietride home. But isn’t true love grand!We’ve been married for 30 years. We’re

see the picture (Off Road Dads, June2015) and it made me feel good too. Aslike most desert racing families we stickclose together and love family and thesport we have. My family grew up in thedesert and it became my passion at anearly age. Then we graduated to “familyenduro’s” where we had my mom, sister,me and dad all riding on the same minutetogether. Then I graduated to more racingactivities after I was 18 and off to theraces I went. Then it turned to an industryjob that now has had me at Honda for 31years! So like you our jobs are part of ourlove and passion.

Thanks again for your lil magazine. Itputs a smile on my face when it arrivesand I get to sit and read about all the newfast guys in our area.

Carnegie State Vehicular RecreationArea is currently looking to expand.About 3500 acres adjacent to the

park have been purchased with OHVmoney and the State is going through theprocess to decide on whether to expandCarnegie. Recently a comment periodended for the Preliminary General Plan andEnvironmental Impact Report. There wereplenty of negative comments filed bythose who oppose OHV anywhere. Thosewho oppose got agencies, municipalitiesand NIMBYs (not in my back yard) tocomment in opposition to the expansion.Many, however, commented on thebenefits of the expansion. CORVA held acomments training class (commentsproject) on how to write strong commentsin favor of the expansion. State Parks isreviewing the input and will decide on thenext step in the near future.

GlamisThe Imperial Sand Dunes Advisory

committee met recently to discuss the

upcoming season. Eachmeeting the BLM givesreports on operations, lawenforcement andemergency medical. Because there hasn’tbeen much action in the sand since ourlast meeting in May, our discussioncentered on maintenance, the upcomingseason and our wish list. It turns out thatsigning the area closed for the PMV plantrequires the work of at least two full timestaff year around. Because the sand shiftsso much, signs are continuously beingburied or exposed.

They are still looking for campgroundhosts. If you have any interest and wouldlike to know more, contact the El CentroBLM office 760-337-4400.

Neil Hamada showed us a newmaterial the BLM is using to reduceerosion. The area where the most erosionhappens is along Wash Road. When waterruns from the late summer monsoons, itdamages the dirt road. They found amaterial that looks like honeycomb nettingthat is put on the ground and the spacesare filled with soil. We are hopeful this willwork as planned. Speaking of Wash Road,the restrooms there have been moved alittle ways to the west. This will allow theWash Road to go straight without a stopsign.

Two accessible parking spots havebeen made next to accessible restrooms,making the area compliant withregulations.

There is a very expensive pavingproject under way at the dunes. It will bedone in phases and will make a variety of

improvements. The one that stuck out themost in my mind is theend of Gordon’s WellRoad will get a loop put inbig enough for an RV toturn around. Now theroad simply stops.

Office manager TomZale said if he were kingfor a day, he would createa new ranger station byGecko Road andHighway 78. The currentstation is getting prettyold. Space is limited

inside and on big weekends, injuredpeople may be attended to in the sameroom that arrested people are beingprocessed. The advisory committee isplanning to work on finding ways to bringin a new ranger station.

LobbyingA lot of people think that “lobbyist” is

a bad word. They thinklobbyists are against what’sgood about our country.

Another way to look at them is when theyrepresent those who oppose you, they arebad. But when lobbyists work for you orrepresent your way of thinking, they takeon a much better view. The job of alobbyist is to persuade legislators andgovernment agencies to see issues theway their clients do.

As an off-roader, all I want is to be leftalone so I can ride my motorcycle outthere. The problem is that there are peoplewho work to keep that from happening.They work through the system, trying torestrict us with laws and regulations. Aspresident of SDORC, I also work within thesystem to protect the rights of off-roaders.Unfortunately, laws and regulations areoften made far from my home in San Diego.I wish I could hop on a flight toSacramento any time an issue comes up,but that’s just not practical for a workingguy like me. What I want is someone torepresent me (and all off-roaders) in

Sacramento. That someone would be alobbyist. Someone who would bewatching the legislative bills beingintroduced and let me know of any thataffect OHV. Then we would work togetherto optimize the outcome.

SDORC had a lobbyist before, but thegreat recession was hard on us. I wouldlove to hire another, but they cost moneyand SDORC has a very limited budgetright now. We are having a fundraising funrun November 7th at The Dip nearSuperstition Mountain. I hope all of youwill make it out to support us and have agreat time. Thenimmediately afterwards a few moretechnical trails will be added to fill out the1.5 Hour C race headed up by the WomenRacers and the day will be headlined bythe 2.5 hour Pro/A/B race.

One thing that will be most uniqueabout the event is the start procedure.Laughlin has very strict BLM regulationson how many racers will be able to startat once so we will be utilizing a start verysimilar to that of the Snowshoe GNCC onthe East Coast starting 10 racers at a timebased on their point standings! Top 10overall start first (Pro and FMF Pro 250combined) followed by the next 10overall. Then the top 10 Open A’sfollowed by the next 10 Open A’s, and soon for each class. Riders who are not inthe points chase will be lined up based

The battle to maintain access to publicland for motorized recreation will

never go away. Yes, we were successfulin regaining 40,000 acres at Imperial SandDunes. This took over a million dollars,more than ten years and a considerablevolunteer effort to make this happen.Now, the anti-access folks have appealedthe Judge’s ruling. So the battle goes on!

The same anti-access organizations

have asked the California Fish and GameCommission to list the flat-tailed hornedlizard as an endangered species. Thisinitially resulted in the shut-down of SolarProjects in the California Desert whileagency staff considered the request. Willthe Imperial Sand Dunes be on the “HitList” next?

The California Department of Parksand Recreation and Air Pollution ControlDistrict are currently wrestling overjurisdiction over airquality at Oceano Dunes.Imperial Sand Dunes willbe next. Dust will be anissue to deal with.

When Judge Illstonissued her findings sheordered the U.S. Fish andWildlife Service (US-FWS) to complete aRecovery Plan for thePeirson’s milk-vetch by2019. ASA will collaboratewith the USFWS to fulfillthe Judge’s order.

Anti-access groups are advocatingriding on marked trails only at OcotilloWells State Vehicle Recreation Area inCalifornia. This could eliminate open ridingat Ocotillo Wells and couldbe considered at Imperial Sand Dunes.

All of these issues have the potentialof limiting motorized vehicle access topublic land.

Four wheeling offers a wide assortmentof terrain to test and hone our skills.Some is really easy; other areas are

quite challenging. One surface that oftengives newer drivers trouble is what I callcobblestone.

Cobblestone trails are like gravelroads, with one distinct difference. Thatdifference can have a huge impact onyour 4WD experience if you’re notpaying attention.

Cobblestone are small rocks that areloose or embedded in the trail, giving itthat telltale feel. Those harmless-lookingrocks can do nasty damage to tires if youhit them wrong. So it’s critical to drive oncobblestone trails properly.

Many drivers follow the maxim,“drive as slowly as possible but as fastas necessary.” That’s greatadvice, but often newer driverscarry it to extremes and get tooconcerned about every rock theysee. Fact is, you can drive athigher speeds (15 to 20 mph)over most gravel andcobblestone-type roads. Justwatch for the cobblestones andrespond accordingly.

The image shows an exampleof a cobblestone-type trail. You’llnote that the highlighted rockisn’t jagged or pointed but it canbe deadly. What makes themhazardous to your tires is thatthey are embedded. Unlikegravel, which is loose and getskicked away, some cobblestonestays put.

If you hit one while goingmore than 10 mph, with tiresaired down to dirt and rock range(15 – 18 psi), you can cut the tires badly.On top of that, you usually cut the backtire before you can stop.

What happened? The sudden impactpinches the sidewall between the rim andthe rock. One solution, then, is to steeraround these rocks.

If you can’t drive around the rock,slow down to less than 10 mph, driveover the rock, and regain your speed.They generally don’t stand up too high,so you can drive over them even in four-high. The slower speed allows your tiretime to flex properly. In this picture, youcould steer slightly to the right and easilymiss that rock. The safest thing is niceand slow.

But remember: you don’t have to beoverly cautious on gravel andcobblestone-type trails. You just need topay attention to spot cobblestones soyou can react accordingly.

Driving uphill on cobblestone

Driving uphill on cobblestone (and,for that matter, gravel) presents its ownchallenges. Use these tips to climb thathill smoothly.

1. A good, steady throttle is mosteffective. You’re going up againstgravity. If you ease up and losemomentum, then throttle up again, you’llspin and kick up stones.

2. Double or triple the intervalbetween you and the other vehicle. If thevehicle ahead starts spinning and

throwing rocks, yourwindshield could getdamaged severely. (Ofcourse, if you’re towing,you don’t have achoice.) Always keepample distance betweenvehicles.Nearly every trail wefour wheelers use offerssome hazards. Part ofthe fun of four wheelingis overcoming thosechallenges. Whilecobblestones shouldn’tbe ignored, don’t letthem control yourexperience. Withpractice you justautomatically avoid thetire eating cobblestone

when possible or slow down and easeover them, thereby allowing you to drivemore confidently on those trails. E

Knees can be be a real pain in the rear for many an off road

enthusiast. From simple mild sprainstrains to complex fractures and ligamenttears, the knees are one of the mostinjured parts of the body. Mostmotocross and ATV folks will have somesort of knee injury as they use their legsfor additional suspension and to keepbody position correct while riding. In abuggy or a Jeep, the knees are protectedas they are not generally weight bearing.With ATV’s and bikes, the legs are rightout there and often used to correct and orkeep the rider balanced and on the bike.

Part of the problem that makes theknee joint so vulnerable to injury other

than what I just pointed out is the factthat the knee has the MOST leverageapplied to it than ANY other joint in thehuman body. The long bones of the leg,the Femur (thigh bone) and the Tibia(shin bone), make forces applied to theknee huge. These forces from thatleverage can and do apply a lot of forceto the knee joint and if there is rotationalforce (torque) as well it’s a triple whammyfolks! Many knee injuries to motocrossand off road riders occur as they stick outtheir foot in a corner or to turn in softsand or mud. As the rider’s boot touchesthe ground, it can get caught while thebike and rider are still moving forward orwhile pivoting in the corner. This can alsohappen when the rider is going straight at

speed or slow anddabs the foot andthe boot catchesthe ground, evenfor a split second.A crash is notrequired!

Knee braces ofhigh quality canhelp preventthese injuries butare not a cure all,just as helmets.Anyone, even

with knee braces on, can still have aninjury. One of the more common kneeinjuries we see in off road or motocross isa tear of the Anterior Cruciate Ligament(ACL), along with the Medial CollateralLigament (MCL) and the MedialMeniscus (cartilage pad, medial side ofknee). The orthopedic surgeons call this“the Golden Triangle.”

The ACL’s job is to stabilize the kneefrom front to back (along with the PCL)and prevent the tibia from coming out ofnormal motions in relation to the femur. Ifthis ligament is damaged it leads toinstability and the cartilage pads,meniscus, like Teflon pads, can begin totear and break down. This all leads topain and swelling and eventually arthritis(inflammation of the joint), often chronicand long term, leading to DegenerativeArthritis Disease.

A good sports injurydoctor or orthopedistcan use certain specifictests to evaluate thevarious structures of theknee for integrity. Thesetests can reveal whatstructures of the kneehave been injured and towhat extent. An x-ray willonly reveal damage tothe bones, in general. AnMRI scan will show thesoft tissues as well,including ligament (boneto bone connectors),tendons (muscle to boneconnectors) andcartilage (the Teflon likelining and pads of thejoints). An x-ray is greatto see possible fractures.The MRI is best for allthe rest of thestructures. Dependingon the history of theknee injury, the resultsof the orthopedic testingand evaluation,generally determines

what needs to be done to recover fromthe injury.

Ligaments of the knee keep the bonesof the knee in proper place and preventexcess motion during use and loads.Laxity and/or complete tears of theligaments will lead to additional damageand most likely require the skills of agood orthopedic surgeon to resolvethese injuries properly. Mild and evenmoderate sprains/strains to the knee canoften be resolved with proper physicaltherapy, medications and exercises. Someof the most common types ofconservative, non-surgical treatmentsinclude ultrasound, electrical musclestimulation, specific strengtheningexercises, braces/supports, swimmingand bicycling. Supplements can includeVitamin C and glucosamine sulfate. Ofcourse, the usual ice, rest and elevationof the knee is included along withcompression of a wrap bandage support.

Generally, if a person can put weighton the knee without any pain and therewas only mild swelling after an injury tothe knee, it should heal in about 4 to 6weeks. There is no substitute for proper,professional medical care and an x-ray torule out more serious injuries like afracture. Be aware that the lateral, non-weight bearing bone of the lower leg,running lateral (to the side) of the Tibia,the Fibula, can be fractured and painful,yet one can often walk on the leg. It isbest to protect the knee with care untilproper evaluation has been obtained.

With older ages, arthritis can set inand cause pain without acute injury.Wear and tear to the knees over the yearswith gravity applying it’s relentless force,wears out the once smooth cartilage thatlines the knee joints. The cartilage startsto get defects in it, not unlike a nice newsmooth Teflon lined frying pan thatbecomes damaged with use and foodbegins to stick to the now roughersurface. If there were prior injuries to theknee over the years, like torn cartilages/meniscus, this degeneration can beaccelerated, as it is with my own kneesafter 40 plus years of dirt bikes andsports.

The good news is that if you haveworn out your knees, the newer kneereplacements seem to be very good formost folks, as have hip replacements, fordecades now. No, they do not havereplacement spines, so better see yourchiropractor on a regular basis and keepthe original equipment as best you canfrom wear and tear. This article is notintended to be a comprehensive review ofall knee injuries or treatments. Not only will the EPA wastewater spillin Colorado cause environmentaldamages for decades to come, but it

could also end up costing taxpayers tensof billions of dollars, according to a newreport.

The right-leaning American ActionForum estimates the total cost forresponding to the Gold King Mine Spillcould range from $338 million to $27.7billion based on the federal government’sown cost-benefit analyses for cleaning uptoxic waste and oil spills.

“There is no direct precedent for thetoxic Animas River spill in Colorado and

past regulatory actions from agencies, butwe can learn from previous benefit-costestimates,” writes Sam Batkins, AAF’sdirector of regulatory policy, adding thathe “evaluated four recent regulations’benefit figures to approximate the cost ofthe current spill in the Mountain West.”

Earlier this month, EPA-supervisedcontractors working on limitingwastewater discharge from abandonedmines in southern Colorado ended upunleashing 3 million gallons of waste fromthe Gold King Mine after breaking awater-retention wall with heavyequipment.

Mine waste has spread hundreds ofmiles to Lake Powell in Utah since theinitial breach, and experts have stated itcould take decades to clean up the minewaste that’s spread throughout NavajoNation.

In its latest press update on the minespill, the EPA said that “drinking water

systems and recreational activity alongthe Animas and San Juan rivers canresume based on water quality samplingresults” done by state and federalofficials. The agency, however, is stillproviding water to locals for drinking andagriculture.

The question now for taxpayers ishow much EPA’s blunder is going to costthem.

One pending EPA rule governing thedischarge of toxic metals from powerplants claims benefits of $424 million fromreducing 0.47 billion pounds of pollutants.AAF adjusted these figures to match theEPA-caused spill of mine waste — whichincluded lead and arsenic — intoColorado’s Animas River and found thespill cleanup could cost $2.7 million.

But that’s on the low end. AAF alsolooked at the Interior Department’sclaimed benefits for avoiding a“catastrophic oil spill” in the Arctic to

gauge how much cleaning up the Animasand San Juan rivers could cost. Interiorsaid the costs of a huge oil spill in theArctic could range from $10 billion to$27.7 billion.

The EPA inspector general’s office has

announced it will investigate the agency-

caused mine spill in Colorado earlier this

month. The spill resulted in millions of gallons of toxic

waste reaching rivers in Colorado and New Mexico.

“We will request documents, and interview

relevant managers and staff in these locations and

elsewhere as necessary,” the IG’s office wrote in a

letter to EPA officials.

Earlier this month, EPA workers broke through a

retaining wall with heavy equipment while working at

the Gold King Mine. Ironically, the agency was

working in the area to stem the flow of hazardous

mining waste into nearby waterways, but instead the

agency ended up spilling 3 million gallons of it into the

Animas River. That plume of toxic waste spread into

more rivers, causing Colorado and New Mexico to

declare a state of emergency.

The EPA IG’s decision to investigate the spill

and the agency’s response comes after Republican

lawmakers urged watchdogs look into the event to try

and figure out exactly what happened and if the

agency was doing anything wrong. E

the half way point. After completing the fifth roundin Primm, Nevada the first weekend of May, theBig 6 Series started the summer break. We arenow preparing to resume the Big 6 GP onOctober 4th-5th with the Viewfinders MotorcycleClub (MC) hosting round six at the DesertEmpire Fairgrounds in Ridgecrest, California.From there we head up to Quail Canyon inGorman, California, October 31 and November1 for round seven with the Prospectors MCthrowing the party. Big 6 Racing's Mike Garvin,has confirmed that the eighth and final round willbe at Lake Elsinore, California, on Decemberfifth and sixth, as the Vikings MC host theirtraditional last round to close out the series.

The premier class of Big 6, the West CoastGrand Prix Pro, watched Colton Udall enter intothe series at Glen Helen's round three. Where

he marched to his first 2015 Big 6 win, then wenton since to win rounds four and five as well.However it is the lean mean PrecisionConcepts scrambler in Justin Seeds who sits firstin the WCGP Pro points with a seventeen pointlead over Udall. Udall has been running well ashe keeps his well worn HondaCRF450X racing fast with plenty oftender loving care and sits second

in WCGP Propoints. RyanReina hasimproved with afourth at roundfour and backingthat up with athird at roundthree he islooking verystrong, and westill have a lot of

racing yet. Reina is third in points. BlayneThompson has had a second and third, butmissed round five and is fourth in points withMark Samuels locking up the top five in theWCGP Pro point standings.

In the WCGP Pro II class, Dalton Shirey, setout fast for the points chase winning the first tworounds, but is not listed as racing in the nextthree rounds. In steps Trevor Stewart racing toa second at the Adelanto Grand Prix in roundone, then came back at round three winning thePro II and finishing third overall. Only thewinning WCGP Pro Udall and second place ProSeeds were faster. Also going about business is3 Brothers racer Nick Stover. Stover has onlymissed the top three once, and with a WCGPPro II victory in Primm, he is the WCGP Pro IIpoints leader after round five, Stewart four pointsback in second. Rowan Trefz won in round fourand followed that up with a third in Primm, he isseventeen points back of Stover in third. Racingin four rounds, Mitch Anderson has two thirdsand a second, is now fourth in points and couldbe a factor if he keeps stepping on the box.Shirey is fifth in points despite not racing in thelast three rounds. Stover also has a firm pointslead in the 201-250cc Lightweight I Expert class.

Southern California AMA’s ChampionshipMotocross Series presented by Ram Jackfinished up the six round series on a typical

warm summer day at Glen Helen Raceway. Short-ening the series to six rounds this season enabledracers to take a short break between the SoCalMxseries and AMA District 37's Big 6 Grand Prix,have a vacation and get the bikes ready to finish theseason in Grand Prix style. The series kicked offround one at LACR the reopened Los AngelesCounty Raceway then going toCompetitive Edge, on to GlenHelen for round three, Gorman'sQuail Canyon, back to LACR, andfinishing up with this return trip toGlen Helen to wrap up the series.

Blais Racing/Fasst Co./Costa Rica Unlimited's BrendanCrow is on a roll. The 2014 AMANational Hare and Hound OpenA Champion, 2014 AMA SoCalMxHeavyweight A class Championis a tall scrapper with fluid likemovements on the dirt. Seemingto glide his KTM 300 XC over therugged layout, he returned strongfor the 2015 SoCalMx edition.The California State San Bernar-dino student started with GrandPrix racing, and is currently rac-ing the 2015 NHHA series andthe Big 6 series. Crow said thathis series went well and he waspleased with his 2015 performance, racing in theHeavyweight A in all six rounds winning twice forthe 2015 class crown. Taking to the District King A inall six rounds as well, Crow went 2-2 for secondoverall at round six but he won the war. In a work-man like fashion, Crow just hammers out the lapsand lets the chips fall. Fall they did for the steeledracer as he brought home his second title winningthe District King A.

The legacy of many Southern Californiamotocross tracks that have now become memoriesof the past, live on with riders like Brian Nasif. Likemany AMA D-37 racers, he is an important part ofSouthern California racing evolution. In his youthhe did the whole classic scenario of the tracks thatcomes up often in racer lore, Saddleback, Carlsbad,under the lights at Corona Raceway and Ascot, theCMC series, the list goes on and Nasif was part ofit. Back into the racing world for twelve years Nasifand wife Lisa are actively involved in the workingsof the Big 6 and AMA District 37 programs . Aftersurviving a serious accident at an October 2013NHHA event he was unable to walk a year ago.Undergoing a right hip replacement, Nasif cameback strong for the 2015 AMA SoCalMx series. Inthe open air cockpit of his 1983 Yamaha YZ490 ofthe Evolution class, Nasif raced every round book-

ending the series with overall wins and taking theseries Championship in the EVO class. He wouldlike to thank John Burr Cycles, Pro Circuit, So CalMC, and most of all, wife Lisa, for all her supportand booting him off the couch!.

David Woolmore has been a loyal racer of theSoCalMx series for five seasons now, but has notbeen able to secure that elusive series Champion-ship in the Revolution class. The tide was changingfor the strapping 1988 Kawasaki KX500 moto ace.

With his jumps out of the gate getting better, his chancesfor consistent high point finishes were vastly im-proved. Woolmore took the overall Revolution classwins in rounds two, four and five. His closest com-petition, Scott Cummings, was fourteen points backof Woolmore's series lead as we head into roundfive, requiring Woolmore to just finish for the title. Herode to a second in moto one, closing out with athird in moto two for third overall, and his first AMA

SoCalMx Revolution Championship.He would like to thank George,Rover's MC, and all of his fans.

The showcase contest of theSoCalMx series is the Kurt CaselliPro Payback title, an Open Pro classformed in the memory and legacy ofKurt Caselli, incorporating a set ofgrueling twenty-five minute plus twolap motos. The golden pot is a mix-ture of entries and sponsor contribu-tions for the race day purse, as wellas funds set aside for the series pointfinal standings. The round six racewas won by Michael Byrne (2-1),after an intense duel with DominicDesimone (1-2) who placed secondoverall. It was Century Motorcyclesracer, Troy Armstrong taking the classtitle. Placing second in round one andthird at round four, Armstrongstruggled in the last two rounds but

After a hot summer break from Arizonashort course, off road racing will becoming back to Wild Horse Pass

Motorsports Park on the weekend ofSeptember 11th and 12th. The Lucas Oil OffRoad Arizona Regional series will be hostingrounds 8 and 9. The race’s theme will honorand remember those who passed in the 9/11attacks. Also in the program will be a ride-a-long in a race vehicle for some very specialveterans.

Come out and watch drivers from Arizona,California, and Nevada, if not other locationsshow off their driving skills. The Kart classeshave several young teens that are aspiring,showing off their driving skills. Several of thesedrivers have been competing for the last coupleof years. It does not matter what the sport is, in order tosurvive and grow it must maintain and attract newmembership. In the sport of vintage motorcycle

racing, this is especially true.In the few short years he has been president

of CALVMX, Frank Vrettas has made atremendous effort to keep vintage motocrossracing viable in Southern California. As he and theclub see things, there are literally hundreds ofsuitable vintage machines stashed away ingarages and sheds, forgotten by their owners.The goal of CALVMX and its national partnerAHRMA is to get the machines back in action withtheir owners and to encourage the youngergenerations to give classic racing a chance andnot just dismiss the machines from bygone eras asjust so much scrap to be ignored.

In an effort to increase the presence of vintageracing of all disciplines, CALVMX and AHRMAstaged an introductory flat track and trials event atCamp Lockett Event and Equestrian Facility(CLEEF) in Campo, California. A designatedhistorical facility, whose history includes being usedby the Buffalo Calvary Soldiers, WW-2 Germanand Italian P.O.W’s, and a junior-senior high school,the venue proved to be the ideal location.

Saturday’s event was an open format flat trackrace held on a short track styled course laid outwithin the main show horse area. The open formatof the races featured machines ranging from 50ccminicycles, knobby tire MX bikes and dual sportmachines on up to purpose built flat trackmachinery. Also featured in the program were thecrowd-pleasing three wheelers and quads.

Fourteen heat races were run in rapidsuccession followed by main events for eachclass. Excellent watering by track officials (RudyGil, Elliot Iverson, Eli Iverson, and Brian Bell fromthe Imperial Valley Flat Track group) kept tractiongood and dust minimal. Class winners includedRandi Schaller (Yam) topping Powder PuffNovice, Penny Bridges and Pat Farmer finishing1-2 in Powder Puff Beginner and Geoff Patrick(Tri) in Classic 250 Beginner. A crowd favoritewinner was Rodney “Bubba” Schaller, the youngson of fellow racers Randi and Bob Schaller.Suzuki mounted Bubba, having only recentlyremoved his training wheels, rode smooth andconsistent to take the under 12 Beginner class.

Making a very impressive first-time showingwas former factory motocross pro Scott “TheBurner” Burnworth. Quickly adapting to havingonly a rear brake, Burnworth powered his way tothree class wins on Ossa and Honda machines.

One of the most impressive races on Saturdaywas the duel between Tanner Pies and TomDecrescente in the Three Wheeler Expertdivision. Never more than two or three bikelengths apart, the two aces broadslid the cornersalmost completely sideways, throwing hugeamounts of roost towards the spectators. Pies’extreme body lean closely resembled that of asidecar speedway passenger. At the finish, Pies

took the victory, followed by Descrescente, whileIntermediate class entrant Mike Dunn topped hisdivision.

Sunday’s schedule featured more flat track,along with a ten-section trials course designed byMatt Parsons. The flat track portion featuredentries by two motocross pioneers (and Bajawinners), Bill Silverthorn and Gene Fetty. Aged 74and 73, both showed fine form on the track withSilverthorn locked in close battle with racers 20years younger. Even a spill exiting turn three andbeing bumped bya fellow rider didnot slowSilverthorn as hetook wins in 60+Sportsman Expert,Open Knobby anda well earnedsecond behindveteran flat trackerSteve Kukla inOpen SuperSenior Expert.

CALVMX/AHRMA Flat Track & Trials WeekendCamp Lockett Event and Equestrian Facility - August 1-2, 2015 - Campo, CA

In a flash backto the late 1960’s,rope starting mini-bikes took to theshort track onSunday.Featuring bothhome and factorybuilt mounts, thediminutivemachines put on a great show. Class winnerswere Gar Wood in Novice, Ron Wood inBeginner and CALVMX President Frank Vrettas inOpen Intermediate.

Scott Burnworth showed his versatility on twowheels by entering his first observed trials event.Using a Keith Lynas supplied Ossa Mick AndrewsReplica, “Burner” maneuvered his way thru theten sections successfully to take the win in ModernClassic Novice, followed by Luke Sayer. For a first-time event, the two days of classicracing were an overwhelming success. Localresidents turned out in healthy numbers and facilitymanagers were highly impressed with theexecution of the event. Tentative plans for a raceseries at the venue for 2016 are now in the works.
