About Symbiosis International UniversitySymbiosis International University (SIU) was built on the principles of Vedic thought of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakkam” - the world is one family, and is resplendent of the activities and students of several countries. The students come from more than 75 countries and find this to be a home away from home. Symbiosis Centre of International Education, wing of SIU, is responsible in promoting this idea and also facilitates international students. At present the University offers various programmes through seven faculties:
Law | Management | Computer Studies | Media, Communication & Design | Health Sciences | Humanities and Social Sciences | Engineering
Our VisionSymbiosis International University will be the preferred destination for all
who aspire to excel.
Our MissionLead value-based pioneering efforts to:
• Facilitate intellectual stimulation to generate, maintain and disseminate knowledge.
• Empower participants to meet the challenges of a collaborative and competitive globalized environment.
• Synergize excellence amongst aspirants through world-class ambience.
• Institute a culture of inclusiveness and provide wide access to higher education opportunities.
• Foster sustainable environmental attitude.
• Develop a unique university where the branches provide sustenance to the tree and bear fruits for all.
• Initiate trends which impact global higher education policies and practices.
Banking sector is increasing in scale and complexity. There is need to recruit and train the additional staff as public sector banks will have to face the challenge of retirement of a large part of their workforce. Some estimates suggest that close to about 500,000 employees of public sector banks would retire over next five years. Apart from this, the Banking & Financial Services Industry as a whole is on the path of growth and is at the same time wrought with challenges. This sector needs more and more readily employable trained professionals to rise up to the occasion.
It is in recognition of this need that we have set up Symbiosis School of Banking Management. The first batch will pass out in April 2012. I am confident that you will find the students adequately equipped with the knowledge and trained with the necessary skill sets.
I welcome you to visit our campus and recruit our students.

From the era of nationalization and priority sector lending to the era where technology enabled, customer focused financial conglomerates operate in multiple segments of the financial sector. Banking in India has come a long way. This sector has been recruiting aggressively to keep up with the growing requirement for trained and resourceful young professionals who could bring with them fresh ideas while responding to the emerging challenges.
This programme, MBA - Banking Management, has been designed as a contemporary, rigorous, innovative and practical source of management education. It would cater to the growing needs of the Banking and Financial sector and provide a pool of talented young executives who are suitably trained to undertake responsibilities in a range of verticals in the Banking and Finance sector.
The first batch of students will pass out in April 2012. I welcome you to visit the campus for an interaction and a possible recruitment and assure you of the ability and competence of our students.

Located at an altitude of approximately 700 meters above the sea level, Lavale is a village on the outskirts of Pune City in Maharashtra, India and is known for its picturesque surroundings. A huge hillock separates Lavale village from Pune city. Surrounded by Western Ghats, Lavale offers a panoramic view of the scenic Western India.
Symbiosis School of Banking Management (SSBM) is among the newer institutes in the family of 25 constituent institutes of Symbiosis International University. Many constituent institutes of Symbiosis International University have been ranked among the top ten in their respective faculty and have enhanced the reputation of the University as one the preferred destinations for higher education in India. For over four decades, Symbiosis has been proactive in understanding the needs of the market and providing trained manpower thus contributing to the growth and development of the country.
Recognizing that the Banking sector will soon have a large requirement of trained personnel due to the retirement of a large proportion of its existing workforce in public sector banks, the pace at which the sector is growing and the nature of operations that have become more complex - Symbiosis set up a school in June 2010 dedicated to Banking Management.
The two-year MBA programme in Banking Management aims to deliver a curriculum that would make the students industry-ready and minimize the post-recruitment training intervention in the high-potential, high-growth banking & finance industry.

I have immense pleasure and pride in introducing to you our bright, vibrant, young Banking Management graduates.Banking in India has come a long way traversing three distinct phases: the era of nationalization and priority sector lending, the era of financial sector reforms in the nineties and now the era where technology enabled, customer focused financial conglomerates operate in multiple segments of the financial sectors. The demands of an emerging economy like ours on the Banking and Financial Services sector are multi-dimensional. Banks will have to master the fine art of balancing growth and inclusive development even as they relentlessly innovate to bring a wider range of financial services to the doorstep of the next generation customer. Banks would hence require appropriately trained management professionals to meet the emerging challenges. The two year MBA programme in Banking Management is designed to provide specialized knowledge and training to address not just the growing requirement but also the increasing complexity of operations of the banking sector. More than 50% of the courses are focused on Banking and Finance and thus equips the students with relevant knowledge and managerial skills to work effectively in banks and other organisations of the BFS sector with minimum training intervention after recruitment.I cordially invite you to Placement 2011 and look forward to a long-term, mutually enriching relation with your esteemed organization.
Dr. Bhama Venkataramani

Prof. Bhama Venkataramani M.Com., PhD. Director, SSBM
MBA – Banking Management
The MBA in Banking Management programme, spread over two years span, has been designed as a contemporary, rigorous and practical source of management education specific to the BFS industry. It would cater to the growing needs of this industry by providing a pool of talented young executives who would be thoroughly trained and ready to shoulder managerial responsibility in the Banking and Financial sector.
The programme provides a coherent analytical framework to develop the required skills and expertise needed to manage finance, people and information in banking and elsewhere in the financial sector. It nurtures professionals who can respond dynamically to the rapid changes in the Economy, Customer Requirements, Regulations and Technology to make smart decisions about the Operations and Strategies in the Global Banking industry.
Apart from the basic courses in the functional areas of management, the intensive curriculum, covers courses specific to the Banking and Financial Services industry such as General Banking Operations, Credit Management, Legal Aspects of Banking, International Banking, Risk Management, Treasury Management, to name a few. The emphasis is on a blended learning methodology that combines classroom interaction, self-study modules enriched by research and experiential learning.
On completion of the first year, an internship of about 8 to 10 weeks duration in an organization, forms an integral part of the programme. In addition, one project of social relevance and one specialized project in banking and finance are mandatory and are to be completed during the programme.
The programme has been well received by the industry despite the global economic slowdown. This is one of a kind programme which goes a long way to showcase the susceptibility of its students to meet the industry expectations.

Class Composition:
A healthy composition of fresh graduates and experienced students from varied academic and professional backgrounds lends diversity to the class and this in itself provides for a vibrant learning atmosphere.
International Collaboration:
Symbiosis School of Banking Management in collaboration with Bremen University and Berlin School of Economics in Germany has instituted a student exchange program wherein every year students from SSBM can opt to attend courses related to European economy (during the months of July and August) along with their summer projects. As part of the programme, subject matter experts and industry captains are invited to provide a multi-dimensional overview. Students of SSBM interact with foreign students and the industrial visits augment their perspective and knowledge.
Sectoral MBA:
The concept of Sectoral Education is not new to India, thanks to the educational reforms of our nation. Symbiosis has always been a pioneer in offering Sectoral MBA programmes to provide trained manpower to suit the specific requirements of the industry. The rationale for such initiatives has been to develop centres of excellence to impart domain skills and also to help students leverage the opportunities provided by rapid growth in business and employment in certain sectors. The Symbiosis School of Banking Management was established to train capable young men and women enabling them to join and contribute effectively in Banks and NBFCs. SSBM will thus endeavour to bridge the supply demand gap the banking industry is facing at present in its own small way.
Skills:
Along with a systematic delivery of a structured curriculum, ample stress is laid on development of professional skills such as time management, appreciation of work-ethics, communication & presentation skills, compliance with organizational rules and appreciation of the merits of working in a team.
Projects:
Consistent with its mission statement, SSBM lays thrust on research based learning. The projects as part of the curriculum provide an opportunity to integrate learning from the programme and apply it to a real management problem or an impending opportunity in a business sector. During the course of study students have to submit 1 minor and 1 major project apart from the Internship project. The minor project needs to be published in a leading magazine. The topics for the minor project are vetted with industry experts for its relevance and are live business issues. The project is executed under the guidance of an industry expert and a faculty member. The projects are also themed upon financial inclusion, researching public policy schemes like NREGA, financial literacy, and various other social challenges.
Seminars:
The seminar series provides a platform for interfacing with practitioners from banking and financial sectors. The aim is to provide exposure to a variety of perspectives. In addition to further enhancing classroom instruction, the seminars make students sensitive to the prevailing trends in different sectors. Being associated with SIU gives our students opportunity to interact with stalwarts from the realm of Economics, Politics and Applied Finance. As part of the 'Festival of Thinkers' series some eminent personalities like Sam Pitroda, Jyotiraditya Scindia, Arun Shourie, Dr. R A Mashelkar, visited our campus and interacted with students and enlightened them with their inspiring & thought-provoking words.

The aim of summer internship is to widen the student’s perspective and to help them understand the real life implications of the theoretical frameworks related to financial sector. It gives the students an opportunity to appreciate the organizational situations.
Placement Assistance Committee (PAC) aims through assisting the students seeking projects as part of their Summer Internship Recruitment Programme (SIRP), and help them seek learning profiles in various Banking and Financial Sector Industries (BFSI) as per the guidelines laid down by the institution vis a vis summer internships.
SSBM has on campus placement process conducted annually, which is supervised by the Faculty Placement Coordinator and coordinated by the student elected Placement Committee. The placement process begins with Pre- Placement Talks by companies, usually scheduled between the months of October, November and December followed by the Final Placement Process.
Pre- Placement Talks:
The Pre-placement talk is a platform for interaction between the company and the students. Organizations are formally invited to participate in the placement process. Recruiters visit the campus for delivering Pre-placement talks to the students. The representatives of the company share the profile of the company, key aspects of its business, work environment, and opportunities available to students. The talks thus act as an interactive session broadly covering a wide spectrum of aspects like company profile, core values, job descriptions, career growth plan, selection procedure and emoluments offered. The presentation is followed by a Q&A session where students interact with company officials to get a better understanding of the company and potential roles. The companies would submit the 'Recruitment Form' with details of job offerings during this phase.
Interested students apply to the company through the Placement Assistance Committee. A detailed resume is submitted by the students as part of the application process for recruitment.
Final Placement:
The final placement process is conducted over an extended period of time beginning in the second week of November. This gives the companies ample time for customized selection processes that may be required, given the lateral hiring process. Final placement interview gives the company and the student an opportunity to discuss the role in detail and make the right choice.
The final placement process thus marks the culmination of the annual placement process wherein candidates, irrespective of the nature of their prior work experience, participate. All essential arrangements including logistics and infrastructural support required for the selection process of various companies would be provided by the institute.
The company can make an offer to the student after the final interview. The offer should include details of role, location, remuneration, and other relevant terms and conditions required by the candidate to make a decision. The acceptance of offer is governed by placement rules of the institute. At the end of the process the decision of the student is conveyed to the company by the Placement Assistance Committee. With this process, our intent is to make the placement process conducive to both the companies and the students. We will also consider any additional company specific requirements over and above the outlined recruitment process.
Final Recruitment ProcessSummer Internship Process
Our students were placed in BFSI including Public Sector Banks (SBI, BoB, BoI, IDBI etc.), Private Sector Banks (ICICI, Axis, HDFC etc.), Foreign Banks (HSBC, Deutsche, etc.) and other Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs) including Financial Consulting Firms, Investment Firms, Insurance Companies and others. Students are also given guidance on the process related to internships at Government of India Undertakings like RBI, NABARD, DEA, etc.
The process generally is typically based on the written tests, student write ups, GDs, and personal interview as per the requirements of the Company interested to absorb students from the institution.
Students are evaluated on the internship project by the company executives based on the parameters defined by the institution. Further the students are evaluated by the faculty from the institute and graded for the credits assigned for the summer internship project.
