Washington County baseball opened its season with a 16-2 loss to Casey County at home Monday night. It was the Commanders fist match since the CO- VID-19 Pandemic hit last year canceling spring and summer sports. “We were a little rusty,” Coach Jason Hilton said. “It’s been two years and we are just happy to be out there.” Hilton said his team had trouble throwing strikes coupled with a few other errors snowballing on them. Despite the challenges, he said his team fought hard and did what they had to. “Good thing about baseball is there is always tomorrow,” he said. Washington Coun- ty played five innings against the Rebels giving up 8 runs late in the game. Luke Mattingly led the team in strikeouts pitch- ing 5, Eli Goben pitched 5 base on balls. Andrew Blandford and Josh Burkhead were the only two to score runs. Hilton said it’s a com- bination of things which played into it, including waiting on players to fin- ish up basketball and get- ting them into “the swing of things,” for baseball. “It’s the first time a lot of these kids have thrown varsity,” Hilton said. “It’s just a different animal.” e Commanders take on Nelson County Tues- day night on home field. e stats for this game were not available by print time this edition.
