D ear Community of St. Augustine, This weekend, the Gospel of St. Matthew (Mt. 16,

13 -20) invites us to reflect on Jesus’ identity. Who is He? Jesus had been preaching the message of the Kingdom of Heaven, taught through parables. He had healed the sick and had performed countless miracles. Now, he wanted to know the world’s opinion and the opinion of His closest friends as well. Jesus wants to know what the people (the world) say, but He also wants to know what do His disciples say about Him. There are many books, studies, documentaries and theories about Jesus. History tells us a lot about Him. The world might have and give an opinion, but the response of the Lord’s disciples was: “Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” (Mt 16:14). However, Jesus is seeking a personal response. He goes beyond what the people might say and He asks them: “But who do you say that I am?” (Mt 16:15). Peter gives Him his answer: “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God” (Mt 16:16). And Jesus gives him a mission: “You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church” (Mt 16:18). Brothers and sisters, Jesus wants us to have a personal relationship with Him and not with what others say about Him. I invite you to ponder this question prayerfully, alone with the Lord, and to reflect: Who is Jesus for you? Depending upon the answer you find in your hearts, you will – or won’t be able to hear Jesus tell you: Blessed are you, because this has been revealed to you by my Father, who is in heaven. May He bless us abundantly!

Q uerida Comunidad de San Agustín, Este fin de semana, el Evangelio de San Mateo (Mt

16:13 -20) nos invita a reflexionar sobre la identidad de Jesús. ¿Quién es Él? Jesús había predicado el mensaje del Reino de Dios, enseñado por medio de parábolas, había curado enfermos y había realizado innumerables milagros. Ahora quería saber la opinión del mundo y de sus amigos más cercanos. Jesús quiere saber qué dice la gente (el mundo), pero también quiere saber qué dicen Sus discípulos sobre Él. Hay muchos libros, estudios, documentales y teorías sobre Jesús. A lo largo de la historia ha dado mucho de qué hablar. El mundo puede tener y dar una opinión, pero la respuesta de los discípulos del Señor fue: “Unos dicen que eres Juan, el Bautista; otros, que Elías; otros, que Jeremías o alguno de los profetas” (Mt 16:14). Pero Jesús busca una respuesta personal, va más allá de lo que pueda decir la gente, y les dice: “Ustedes, ¿quién dicen que soy yo?” (Mt 16:15). Pedro le da su respuesta: “Tú eres el Mesías, el Hijo de Dios vivo” (Mt 16:16), y Jesús le da una misión, “Sobre ti edificaré mi Iglesia” (Mt 16:18). Hermanos, Jesús quiere que tengamos una relación personal con Él, y no con lo que dicen otros sobre Él. Poniendo esta pregunta en oración, a solas con el Señor, los invito a que reflexionen y respondan: ¿Quién es Jesús para ti? Según la respuesta que encuentren en su corazón, podrán o no escuchar a Jesús decirles: Dichoso tú, porque esto te lo ha revelado mi Padre que está en los cielos. Que Él nos bendiga abundantemente.
