With roots going so far back that the original “trade show” was held in the old and much beloved Ducky Dome on Perron Street, the St. Albert Lifestyle Expo and Sale has become one of the region’s top offerings. The journey has had its ups and downs along the way. But the raison d’être for the show has always remained the same: to showcase and promote goods and services from St. Albert’s business community.

Moving to the two ice arenas in Campbell Park for a few years before Servus Credit Union Place was constructed, the Chamber was anxious to expand when plans for Servus were announced. Inspired and motivated by the success of the Great Canadian Trade Show held in Sherwood Park, the

St. Albert Chamber seized the opportunity to move into the four large spaces available when Servus opened their doors. The St. Albert Lifestyle Expo has experimented and tweaked the template over the past 10 years and now hosts one of the region’s most successful shows. Every year the Expo still insists on small improvements, which has led to the 2015 Expo being completely sold out.

Producing and organizing the show primarily falls on the shoulders of Debbie Grant, events manager, and Deanna Reith, events coordinator, along with the rest of the Chamber staffers. They work closely with Servus Credit Union Place staff, Lifestyle Expo committee chair, Margaret Geall and her team, sponsors and exhibitors, and they even line up the bag piper for the opening ceremonies. Literally hundreds of volunteers

are required to host the three-day event. A variety of groups, such as the 533 St. Albert Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron, the St. Albert Bereavement Fellowship and even high school students come together as a well-oiled volunteer machine.

“I love meeting the people, working with the volunteers and seeing the vendors come back year after year,” says Geall, “and we just try to generate fun. We’re so grateful for our volunteers; otherwise we couldn’t do what we do—make sure they are well fed and taken care of.”

The show starts Friday, April 17th, at 2 p.m. and runs until Sunday, April 19th, at 5 p.m. Perennial Expo favourites returning this year include the Taste of St. Albert, featuring Boston Pizza, Central Social Hall, Famoso Neapolitan Pizza,

Fat Burger, Nello’s and Soda Jerks, adult and kids versions of the Stamp Around Program, free admission for seniors on Friday and, of course, the famous St. Albert Idol singing contest with the winners determined by audience voting at the finals on Sunday afternoon.

“We do have something for everybody in the family; it’s fun and it’s affordable,“ says Chamber President and CEO Lynda Moffat. “It also gives business an opportunity to meet people face to face and maybe for a resident to discover a business or service they didn’t know even exists.”

The little library that couldMARCIE GRAYSt. Albert Leader

They’re popping up all over the world, and now you can find four of them in St. Albert.

Boxes full of books.Not just any boxes. These are boxes that

sit outside, surviving snow, rain and wind, waiting for someone to pick up or drop off a book or two.

Known as “little free libraries,” they can be used by anyone, and there is no need to sign out a book and no expectation that you’ll return it.

The idea is to share books you love – not dump the ones that bore you – and get to know your neighbours in the process, says Angie Dedrick, St. Albert’s neighbourhood development coordinator.

“It’s a fun, whimsical way for people to connect with their neighbours. You can be creative. You can make your own boxes. You can repurpose something.”

Old metal newspaper boxes work well, Dedrick notes, since they’re weatherproof. She’s managed to gather up a dozen, but most are already spoken for by residents planning to open little free libraries on their lawns.

When it comes to decorating, they’ll have a hard time beating June Bailey’s box. She works at Sturgeon Heights School in North Ridge and led the effort to put a box in the back field last September.

“We painted the box a bright lime green, and I took it from room to room, and everyone put a thumbprint on it. After, the 400

thumbprints all got turned into ladybugs and bumblebees.”

Bailey checks on the box every 10 days or so, swapping out books to make sure there’s variety. There’s no shortage of reading material, she says, since the library passes on old books, and parents and staff drop off donations.

Bailey is proud to be involved in achieving a first for St. Albert: a book box on school property. But her main motivation? To promote reading, an activity she’s loved since

childhood.And now her grown

children are getting into the act. Her daughter has set up a box on the corner of her lawn in Erin Ridge, and her son plans to follow suit.

Back at city hall, Dedrick says the key to success is neighbourhood buy-in. When neighbours are on board, they’ll check the box regularly, removing inappropriate material and preventing vandalism.

Best of all, they’ll get to talking.

“It’s another way for neighbours to connect and take time to meet one another and talk to one another. I think we’re busy in our lives. You just sometimes forget that it’s important to be connected to each other,” Dedrick says.

“And the boxes are cute!” Interested in setting up a little free library?

As I write this, my oldest son is across the kitchen rolling out dough for

homemade cinnamon buns. It isn’t that we couldn’t go out and buy some cinnamon buns at a local bakery or find some premade dough at the grocery store. In making it himself, there is a sense of achievement, and the family gets to enjoy a treat made with love.

My childhood in St. Albert is filled with many memories of family coming together to bake, make preserves, pickle carrots and beets, make pies, and, in these early months of spring, plant gardens to grow vegetables and fruit for the family. My parents and their siblings each maintained a garden in their yards. This is a tradition I keep to this day, sharing the work and benefits of fresh food coming straight from our backyard. Though these small acts of urban

agriculture are often criticized for not making a significant difference, they have always made a difference to me and my family.

I am hosting another conversation event for St. Albert residents this week who are interested in encouraging more urban agriculture within our community. There are so many ways St. Albert residents can support our community in developing more local food sources.

Many of my neighbours love their backyard and balcony gardens. They plant fruits and vegetables every spring and harvest their gifts in the summer and fall. This source

of fresh, local food is not only good for the soul but also helps maintain a healthy lifestyle full of produce without pesticides or preservatives.

The possibilities for our botanical arts community can be so much greater than our gardens. There are already several semi-private community gardens where residents are able to sublet a plot, ideal for the resident without much yard space. These community gardens are also places where residents are able to gather, share ideas and build a community.

Encouraging a community where residents may take on greater stewardship of community gardens, fruit orchards or green roofs does more than create a local food source. These acts of urban agriculture beautify our community and bring residents together. The food grown serves

not just one family; it also serves as a food source for local food banks and families who may need our help in putting healthy nourishment on their tables.

The response within our community of residents, businesses, schools and institutions has been overwhelmingly to see more urban agriculture happen within our beautiful city. Each of these acts of urban agriculture may not be big, significant acts by themselves, but together they represent a significant change in how we come together as a community.

Imagine a community with beautiful gardens in every neighbourhood and orchards of trees stewarded by our residents, providing food and creating beauty that we can all enjoy. When small acts of urban agriculture like these add up, they no longer seem so small.

This, is good news for St. Albert: Servus Place has just posted a modest profit, having generated 101% cost recovery for

the 2014 fiscal year. Recreation centres don’t make a profit. They

are supposed to lose money, and lots of it. They are meant to serve the community, just like our library, transit, roads and more.

To put the growth into perspective, in 2007, Servus Place only recovered 68% of the cost of operations.

The 2014 financial report pointed out that a large portion of the gains ($540,000) was due to a financial restructure in which expense reallocations were made to give a more accurate picture of the actual costs to operate the facility.

We’ll call that a one-year, quick accounting win, but even considering that, it is still great news for a facility that has faced financial losses over the years.

For the past 10 years, this building has been polarizing for many in the community. The plebiscite about the construction of Servus Place in 2004 barely passed, which only added fuel to the fire as it was a slim majority of a small, yet typical, voter turnout.

We’ve mentioned above many city services that cost our community millions of dollars to deliver each year and that for some reason do not face the same scrutiny that Servus Place has had to endure during its almost 10 years in existence.

The building has proved to be so much more than just a couple soccer pitches, a pool, a gymnasium and a few hockey rinks.

It truly has become a community gathering place that continues to offer new events and community opportunities each and every year.

Creative accounting can be the fodder for the naysayers this time around, but, if that’s the case, it will catch up with the city soon enough.

In the meantime, congratulations to the City for fully recovering the cost to operate one of the best facilities of its kind in the region.

The City has proved that full cost recovery can be done at Servus Place, so what service is next?

Powerful trip to nationals in Newfoundland for St. AlbertanLEADER STAFFSt. Albert Leader

The sport doesn’t have power in its name for no reason. Last week, the Rock was the scene of the 2015 Canadian Powerlifting Nationals, and, by the Rock, we mean St. John’s, Newfoundland.

St. Albert had some big representation as local Tim Nadeau qualified as a member of Team Alberta along with two others who train in St. Albert.

It was the largest field in the history of powerlifting, with over 325 competitors ranging in age from 15 to over 70.

All provinces were represented at the event, and 35 athletes represented Alberta.

Nadeau, Sandra Drake and Yvonne Sanche train in St. Albert at Saint City Crossfit.

After his first qualification back in the summer of 2014, Nadeau looked ahead to the nationals and said, “I don’t want to just show up and get my participation badge. I want to actually do something there.”

All three athletes trained under the guidance of Avi Silverberg, who himself holds several powerlifting records. He is also president of the Alberta Powerlifting Union. As Silverberg lives in Calgary, the team does most of their training program online via email and video.

“We trained on average six to seven hours per week for almost a year. That’s hundreds of hours of gym time for just nine minutes on the platform to compete! It’s all worth it!” said Nadeau.

Sanche, Drake and Nadeau all competed in the Masters 1 division (ages 40–49). The three St. Albert-trained contestants all brought home the bronze medal in their respective categories.

Still tired from the long journey home, Nadeau was in good spirits about the trip and the experience.

“Amazing experience! Plan to do it again in 2016, hopefully a little stronger and a whole lot thinner!” he said.

INGREDIENTS So what do we need?

2 cups of onions – chopped finely2 cups of celery – chopped finely1-1/2 TBSP butter to sauté celery and onion5 cups milk1/2 cup of flour1/4 cup butter1/2 TSP salt1/4 TSP pepper1/2 lb – (8-10 slices of cheese)10 oz cooked Lobster meat8 oz cooked Crab Meat1 Lb of cooked scallops1 LB of cooked shrimp (tails removed)2 pieces of white fish (haddock recommended). Make sure white fish is boneless and cut into pieces.

HOW TO What are the directions?

Sauté the celery and onions in the 1-1/2 tbsp of butter, adding the salt and pepper to the pan. In a large pot, bring the milk almost to a boil (do not burn). Add 1/4 cup of butter and 1/2 cup of flour, stirring until smooth. Add the sautéd onions and celery to the pot. Stir in the cheese, cooking until the cheese is melted and the sauce has started to thicken. Cook the scallops separately in cold water. Once cooked, drain completely and discard the water. Add the Lobster, crabmeat, shrimp, scallops and white fish to the pot and stir to blend all the fish into the mixture. Pour the mixture into a large casserole. Bake in the oven at 325 degrees for 30–45 minutes to ensure it is heated through. Can be served on its own or over a bed of rice. We have also poured it into individual dishes (onion soup bowls) that can withstand the heat of the oven. We have found that if you make it the day before, it thickens nicely overnight in the fridge. Just a caution when reheating, it takes a while to completely heat through, but do not put your heat too high or rush it as you do not want to burn or scald the milk.

What makes it a dish you like to make?This recipe was traditionally made on Christmas Eve and was eaten after the family attended Mass. When we moved our family to Western Canada in 1992, we began making the Seafood Casserole and have carried on the tradition since. Sadly, Theresa passed away in 2003, but the family in New Brunswick still make the dish and get together at Christmas to carry on the tradition. We have added this dish to several other occasions here in Alberta, such as the wedding of our son. We also make a double batch and freeze it to enjoy a special treat when we really miss the ocean.

What is on your food bucket list? Over the years, I have pretty much sampled dishes from around the world. So there really isn’t anything on my food bucket list.

Who is your favourite Chef and why?Michael Smith. Anyone who leaves Manhattan to become the Chef at an Inn in PEI, then opens his own restaurant in Halifax is a natural favourite for a Maritime lad like myself.

A great meal you’ve had in St. Albert the last couple months?It is so hard to pick one place over the other. We enjoy dining out and have had notable meals in the last several months in St. Albert at San Remo, Sorrentino’s and East Side Mario’s. (There appears to be a pattern here - Italian).

What country would you like to visit for their cuisine? I really want to spend some time travelling and sampling the different cuisines around France. I love their sauces and of course, they have some wonderful wines to accompany the many dishes you would discover there.

Hundreds of students at Vincent J. Maloney Junior High School are getting ready to take on diabetes next week.

Three hundred and fifty students will fill the school’s gymnasium next Thursday for the day-long bike-a-thon fundraiser.

They originally set out to surpass last year’s total of $42,000, and as of press time they had already surpassed that and were working their way toward a new goal. The money raised by the students is for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and goes toward research into the treatment, cure and prevention of type 1 diabetes.

Teams are required to raise money in order to participate.

The event is organized and run by the grade 9 Leadership class at VJM called GO MAD

(Go Make a Difference). Janelle Hobbs, teacher of the Leadership class, is in her first year at the school.

“The event has become part of the culture of the school. They start talking about it in September,” said Hobbs.

“They’ve been out there pounding the pavement.” This added to how impressed she was with the kids’ efforts.

Leading up to the event, the

students secured sponsorships, took in team registrations, collected pledges and organized entertainment for the event.

One of the school’s teachers, Mr. Troy Bontus, has been growing a beard throughout the school year. “I promised the

kids if they raised over $50,000 this year that they could shave my beard off,” said Bontus, with a laugh. The team that raises the most money gets to shave the beard on the main stage.

This year marks the fourth year for the event, which raised over $106,000 in the first three years.

The bike-a-thon is Thursday, April 23rd, at Vincent J. Maloney (20 Mont Clare Place) from 8 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. The

opening ceremonies will be held at 8 a.m. and the closing ceremonies at 6 p.m. The public is welcome to pop in during the day to show their support.

The force behind the forceSUN MEDIA NEWS SERVICES – In the Star Wars universe, Padawan learners tend to rebel against their Jedi masters, at least if that Darth Vader dude is anything to go by.

Not so with Doug Chiang. The man who learned at the feet of Star Wars creator George Lucas, designing pod racers, battle droids and a host of other spaceships, creatures and settings in the prequel films, still feels the void left by his mentor’s absence.

Chiang is the driving force behind the visual design of this year’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens, as well as all the other Star Wars feature films currently in the works. He joined Lucasfilm in 1995 with the daunting responsibility of heading the art department for Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, and has now come full circle, overseeing a small army of designers building the worlds that will fill the next wave of movies.

“The terrifying part is we don’t have George,” Chiang said in an interview this week, on the eve of the six-part Star Wars saga making its debut on iTunes, Google Play, Xbox Video and the online Cineplex Store, the first time the movies have been made available for high-definition digital download.

Lucas, who sold his Star Wars empire to Disney in 2012 for more than $4 billion, has no direct input into the new movies. J. J. Abrams, who most recently directed the Star Trek reboots, is behind the camera for The Force Awakens, hitting theatres this December. Rian Johnson (Looper) will direct 2017’s as-yet untitled Star Wars: Episode VIII, while Gareth Edwards (Godzilla) will helm next year’s Star Wars spinoff Rogue One.

“It’s very demanding. It’s very hard,” said Chiang, who now serves as vice president and executive creative director at Lucasfilm. “We’re still trying to figure out, what is Star Wars? Without George, it’s a very tough challenge.

“We all think we know what it is, but really, Star Wars is George. George is the

only person who really knows it very well. We’re all trying to create something in his playground, but it’s his playground.”

The digital release of The Phantom Menace, available Friday along with the other five Star Wars films, includes a behind-the-scenes documentary that shows Chiang watching Lucas approve or dismiss concept art with barely more than a glance.

“He could scan a wall full of art and almost instantly identify the one or two or three images he really liked,” said Chiang. “When I finally had the courage to ask, it was probably the biggest lesson for me. He said, ‘I’m basically judging it by shapes

and understanding.’ What George was really doing was he was

looking at those designs through an audience’s

point of view.”Chiang designed

hundreds of on-screen elements for the prequel movies, from Queen Amidala’s elegant silver shuttlecraft to the

stately, if sterile, galactic senate

chamber. With The Force Awakens being

set decades after Return of the Jedi, he’s getting his

hands dirtier – figuratively speaking, since all the work is done

digitally these days – and going back to Star Wars’ roots.

“I grew up drawing things like X-wings and TIE fighters, and I’m finally getting an opportunity to do that,” Chiang said.

But when the 53-year-old Chiang was a teenager, Star Wars movies were major events that happened years apart. Beginning this year, we’ll have a new Star Wars feature film every year, to say nothing of the deluge of spinoff media, from TV shows to comics to video games. Is there enough magic left in that galaxy far, far away to sustain all this?

“When I was working with George, we had designed a huge universe, and only a small portion was used because the stories he was telling only used a little bit of it. And now we’re able to utilize all that other richness,” said Chiang.

“I think the audience is going to be really surprised. There’s so much out there still.”

SUN MEDIA NEWS SERVICES – A seven-year-old Alberta entrepreneur who wowed investors on CBC’s Dragons’ Den for an idea to reform picky eaters is helping put healthy meals in the hands of students by donating $5,000 to Breakfast Clubs Canada.

“It feels real ly great to use the Dragon’s hard earned money to donate for kids to have healthy breakfasts,” said seven-year-old Mya Prehn, the ambitious creator and driving force behind the Lunch Apeel program.

Like many children her age, Prehn admits she was a picky eater and would often skip over the healthier snacks in her lunch in favour of more tasty treats, missing out on valuable nutrition.

“My mom was getting frustrated that I didn’t eat the healthy portions of my lunch, so it occurred to us that we had to make it a game, and voilà, Lunch Apeel was born,” Prehn said.

Through the Lunch Apeel program, parents and students, while packing their lunches, place Abby the Apple stickers on healthy snacks, earning between one and three stickers per item. The healthier the snack, the more stickers the student earns by eating it.

When the student brings home their lunch kit, the parent counts up how many stickers their child earned by eating the healthy options and crosses off corresponding Abby the Apples off of a board at home. Twenty Abby the Apple stickers earns the

child a special reward.Abby Langer, a registered

dietician, says the best tip she has for parents trying to get their children to eat healthier foods is by including them in decision making, a principle the Lunch Apeel program is built upon.

“When kids get involved, they feel invested, and when they feel invested, they are more able to make better choices and more apt to eat whatever they make,” Langer, who said it can be as easy as letting a child pick a new fruit or vegetable from the grocery store every week, or packing lunches or trying new recipes together.

Prehn’s pitch in the Dragons’ Den impressed all of the resident investors, who each pledged $1,000, for a total of $5,000, to her campaign.

Now, not only are all the students in her Grade 2 class at Stettler Elementary school in the program, Prehn has sold 600 Lunch Apeel kits to date, an impressive feat for the small business still based out of her family’s home.

“It seems to be really big for my class, and now we do it all together,” Prehn said.

Mya Prehn is proudly presenting a $5,000 cheque to Arlene Dickinson, one of the Dragons featured on the Dragons’ Den, to support Breakfast Clubs of Canada on behalf of Lunch Apeel on April 30 at Don Bosco Elementary Junior High School in Calgary.
