The glittering lights, the joyful songs and the traditional and time-honoured family rituals of the festive season elicit the opposite of the intended effect for some people. The Christmas season can exacerbate the emotions resulting from life-changing events such as the loss of a loved one or a divorce or from having no support from family. Just the stress of gift buying, house cleaning, dinner preparations and getting your desk cleared before the holiday break can be overwhelming; it takes a physical and emotional toll.

We all know Christmas is coming. Preparation and planning can help alleviate some of the potential seasonal triggers that can cause stress and even depression.

“We like to think things are happy, so when someone is sad, we don’t want to hear about it, ” says St. Albert-based therapist Krista Osborne, “Oftentimes friends and family or they themselves ignore the issue or push it to the side. It’s Christmas. It’s supposed to be a happy time.”

Ignoring the problem is not the best strategy. Often an individual will be overlooked or will isolate themselves. Extend an invitation and let them know they’re welcome to participate in the festivities if that’s what they want to do. Sometimes people just need some space; time alone is what they really want and need. That’s ok, too.

When loss occurs in our lives, whether a divorce, a death in the family or a job loss, it can require some self-ref lection. Paying attention to what your friend or family member is saying and understanding their needs is the key. Then we can respond appropriately.

This can be a good time of the year to remember those we’ve lost. By sharing stories, remembering how they lived rather than how they died,

honours their memory and allows us to share genuine feelings of happiness or grief. These are natural feelings and part of the grieving process we all inevitability go through, whether from a recent loss or one from years ago, says Osborne.

One of the most difficult and challenging situations around the holiday season is access to the children by a spouse or grandparent, during or after a divorce. Unfortunately, children

can become pawns in a power struggle or an opportunity for revenge or control.

Doreen Slessor, executive director for St. Albert’s Stop Abuse In Families (SAIF), says there are ways for divorced parents to be successful at Christmas, and that means making Christmas about the kids. It can be devastating that your children are not with you on Christmas morning this year.

“Don’t use children as a weapon,” states Slessor emphatically. “Denying access is the worst thing a parent can do at Christmas. You’re not only denying the parent access, you’re denying the child access to the person they love—their mom or dad or grandparent. It’s not good for anybody.”

Being a divorced parent means putting on “adult pants” and doing what’s best for the kids. A good Christmas can be enjoyed by all, with a little

communication, planning and commitment. There are always ways to ensure all family members enjoy the season. For example, perhaps having Christmas at your house on the 23rd means the kids get to open presents at both houses.

Between the stress, alcohol and custody disputes, family violence unfortunately does spike around this time of year. The first priority is your personal safety and that of the children. If you’re in danger, call 911 immediately. Violence takes many forms: physical, financial and psychological. Threats of violence, no access to money, not being allowed to leave the house or seek employment, or continually being told that you’re useless, are as debilitating as physical violence. Various forms of assistance are available (sometimes 24 hours a day) depending on the situation and immediate need: the Salvation Army, the Victim Services Unit (if RCMP are involved), the Kids Help Phone (1-800-668-686) or Family Violence Info Line (780-310-1818).

“If you have children, make it special for them, no matter what’s going on with the grown-ups,” says Slessor. “Keep the kids out of the grown-up issues.”

SAIF does not provide online support, and their offices will be closed over Christmas. If you are in immediate crisis, please call 911 or the provincial helpline at 780-310-1818.

Help is available. Whether the shoulder of a professional or a good friend, seek it out.

What is your routine to get ready for this big journey?

I usually like to thank the little people in my life for all of the hard work that they do. Of course I mean the elves and they set me straight every year. I’ve tried a few times to mess our plans up to see if they can fix it. Every time they’ve taken care of every little detail.

How do you keep track of all the good boys and girls in the age of technology?

There’s an app for that….Ho Ha Ho Ha Ho! Seriously though, I have found it much easier these past few years to track the good and bad kids through the world. With social media and the kids taking selfies all the time, I see more than I ever have.

What is your favourite snack that is put out for you on Christmas Eve?

Cookies and milk, cookies and milk, cookies and milk. Did I say cookies? Kids - don’t be afraid to try any and all kinds of cookies. Sometimes I know that you and your parents may have forgotten to make cookies or put out milk but don’t worry - anything will do as Santa appreciates the thought.

If you spend one day away from the North Pole, where would it be and why?

More than likely would take Mrs. Claus and the elves for a day at the beach. We did that a few years ago and it didn’t last long. I had one big sunburn, the reindeer got kicked off the beach and the elves buried each other in the sand. It took us three hours to find them all!

What is new and exciting at the North Pole?

We like to have a big block party each year after Christmas. What you see in the commercials is not too far from the truth. The polar bears bring their sleds and pop and we have a great time.

Do you collect anything? And what are your hobbies?

I’m a bit of an old comic book collector. Nothing better than catching up with Superman, Batman and more. It sure has been fun watching all of the movies they’ve made of many of my favourite characters.

What have been your favourite presents to give out over the years?

The video games sure have been fun. The year the Wii came out, I was tempted to play a few games of tennis each time I set it up for the little ones at night. I did try the bowling game once and got a strike on my first roll. I let out a huge Ho Ho Ho and almost woke the entire house! Haven’t played since because of that.

What is your favourite meal that Mrs. Claus makes for you before your long journey?

She is so good to me. Mrs. Claus likes to pack me a big meal for my journey around the world. Don’t tell her, but I found a place last year that was so good! I make sure to finish all my food before I get to St. Albert so I can sneak myself a nice tasty burger from Jacks Burger Shack.

What kind of treats do reindeers like?

I save the best treats for them on Boxing Day. That way they know they have to do a great job on Christmas Eve and really work hard to make sure all the kids get their presents each year.

St. Albert has its very own singing Christmas angel. Her name is Hailey Benedict, and her voice can make you smile.

�is year Hailey is taking the stage at the Jubilee Auditorium in �e Singing Christmas Tree, one of Edmonton’s most spectacular Christmas shows. Not only is she in the choir, but she has a duet solo as well. �e Singing Christmas Tree has been a long-standing tradition, and one that Hailey longed to be a part of—feeling it was a great way to give back to the community that has already given her so much.

Hailey has had a surreal year, and to have such a great experience at a magical time is not lost on her. She is so humble and just wanted to share her talents to make everyone enjoy the season.

A highlight of participating in the show is the opportunity to perform on the same stage with Brett Kissel. Kissel, an Alberta boy who is also making his name well known internationally, is the featured entertainer of this year’s Singing Christmas Tree. �ese entertainers have something besides their love of music

in common. �ey were both nominated for the 2014 Alberta Country Music Association Fan Choice Award. Hailey has made it through the �rst round and is still in the running for the award that will

be presented on January 25, 2015. Kissel is nominated for Male Artist of the Year, Single of the Year, and Album of the Year.

�is is not Benedict’s �rst appearance

on the stage at Christmas. In 2012 and 2013 she played the role of Jenny Cratchit in the Citadel’s production of A Christmas Carol. It was an amazing experience for the little girl who only auditioned on a whim. When they got the call that she had the part, her whole family was awestruck.

�e experience taught Hailey that being an entertainer demanded a lot of hard work and dedication, but the rewards for performing were fantastic. �ere were endless hours of rehearsals, homework and travel to the theatre. Many sacri�ces were made by her entire family to help Hailey realize her dream. But they all did so willingly.

In 2013, Hailey even wrote her own song. Her original “My Sweet Alberta Home” was one of eight �nalists for the All-Alberta Songwriting Contest. Locally she has sung at the Rotary Music Festival, Canada Day celebrations, St. Albert Kids Idol and many other venues. She loves to sing and especially loves to sing the national anthem.

�is Christmas singing angel certainly knows how to share the magic of the season. And if you get the chance, make sure to catch her performing. You will de�nitely walk away with a smile.

Peter Kim has been a lieutenant with the Salvation Army in St. Albert for the past four years. His role with the organization involves directing all the services the Salvation Army provides in the community. And every holiday season, Kim is reminded about how some people run into hard times and how, despite those unfortunate circumstances, the Salvation Army is there to help with that glimmer of hope.

“I tried to picture myself going through hard times at Christmas,” explains Kim. “I wanted to do something where people who are coming to the Salvation Army to give Christmas presents to their kids can still have that sense of dignity.”

Kim quickly thought back to when he was doing his training with the Salvation Army in Winnipeg. Originally, Salvation Army toy donations were normally done by having people in need sign up and then the organization’s volunteers would �ll a bag with toys. What Kim experienced during his training was the opening of a full toy centre, where anyone in need who signed up for the program could walk through the facility and pick out brand

new toys that had been donated.“It brought a lot more of a sense

of ownership,” says Kim. “It’s like a shopping experience.”

Kim set up his own toy centre at the St. Albert Salvation Army headquarters on Liberton Drive, where more than 100 families in St. Albert have gone through and picked up more than 200 toys to help make their Christmases merry. �e Salvation Army were able to set up a box for new toy donations at St. Albert’s Walmart at the end of November. By December 8, the toy centre was open and operational. Kim explains that people who come through the toy centre schedule appointments and are guided by volunteers for that extra bit of privacy while they look for toys.

�rough the work with the toy centre, the Salvation Army has been able to help families with other aspects of the holiday season, either through other programs o�ered through the Salvation Army or by referring families to their partner organizations, such as the food bank.

“I remember at one point we had a man come through, picking out toys for his kids, and he was crying, holding his eviction notice,” Kim recalls. “We immediately had him go through some

of our other programs and had him referred over to the food bank. Before he le�, he had his Christmas presents, he had his rent paid, and he had food for the holidays. We helped make sure his family still had a good Christmas.”

Kim says that all the work, donations and drives done by the Salvation Army stays in the communities they’re based in. He says he’s constantly reminded of the

need for the Salvation Army’s programs and services in all the communities he works in (stretching across to Jasper, Hinton and as far east as the Saskatchewan border), and he just wants to make sure those needs are met.

“People like to help their local communities,” Kim says. “And what’s raised here stays here.”

I know this city is one of the best in all of Canada. I also know

that we need to take care of those who live here. Just recently I sat next to a man in tears who had lost his job and could not pay his rent. He showed me his eviction notice dated Dec. 19. I was able to help this man and his family (wife and four-year-old) through The Salvation Army Emergency Fund. Every year The Salvation Army brings out their kettles to raise funds for the most vulnerable, but we don’t do it alone. The generous giving from our community allows us to provide hope and dignity to all those in need.

I especially want

to thank those in our community who’ve taken time to help with our kettle campaign—the seniors, individuals, adults, young people (B.A.M.), businesses (Scotiabank, Paradise Pets, Royal LePage, The Chamber of Commerce, Walmart, Superstore, Save On, Costco, Sobeys, Safeway, and the St. Albert Centre), and service clubs (Rotary Club of St. Albert, The Lions Club, A.C.T. and the St. Albert Fire

Department). You all helped to make a difference in people’s lives. Also, on behalf of those we help daily, I thank the community of St. Albert for their generous donations to our Christmas kettle/mail campaign and The Salvation Army Thrift Store. Your support makes a real impact in our local community and makes this city a great place to live.

As I prayed for the gentleman who needed a home this Christmas, his tears turned from worry to tears of joy and I thought of the story of Jesus. Joseph and Mary had no place to go, and there was no place for

them in the inn. The inn keeper was able to get them a place in the stable. As we continue the tradition of giving gifts to others, The Salvation Army was able to help this family and many more in times of need. It is my hope that this city of ours will come to know the one gift that brings true peace, hope and joy for all. This Christmas season, may those around you be drawn towards Christ and His love as you come together with your family and friends. I invite you to come to church and experience the miracle of love. Merry Christmas and God bless you!

L et’s park the idea that he or she who is busiest is without doubt the most important person in the room.

It is fairly safe to say that, especially in today’s world, we are all busier than ever. To describe yourself as anything other than busy suggests you are an out-of-work, no-good lazy person with nothing going on in your world.

Even many retired people, when asked “how are things lately?” will say “busy”.

Doing what? You’re retired!, we jest. You should be enjoying a big pile of not much to do!

If it takes me a minute longer to drive down St. Albert Trail, I yell. Don’t they know how busy I am?!

Yes, and important, too! We haven’t forgotten: Busy equals important.

But let’s give it a break for a brief period. Let us enjoy our time with our family and friends this holiday season and park our thoughts of busy-ness.

We all have lots on the go, but let’s take it in stride. A tremendous amount of ugliness is occurring in our world these days, and when we take that step back to compare our busy-ness, it does not. Not remotely.

We are fortunate to live in a community like ours. It’s like we’re living in a triple bubble. Canada is a bubble within the world, Alberta is a bubble within Canada and St. Albert is a bubble within our province.

We’re pretty lucky on so many fronts. In your time with family and friends, we

hope you have a wonderful Christmas. In whatever shape or size that the love of the season comes into your world, embrace it for all its worth.

We’ll all get back to being busy soon enough.

In 2009, Jesse Kupina, along with his business partner Jerry Rota, opened the Ranch Roadhouse in Edmonton along Gateway Boulevard. Having worked in restaurants and bars most of his life, Kupina knew he would one day open his own establishments. “It’s the natural progression,” Kupina says. “I just consider myself really lucky that I get to do this as my career.”

Kupina and Rota continued their business ventures in Edmonton by opening Central Social Hall in 2012. �e downtown Edmonton staple quickly gained a cult following from its fun atmosphere and original drink and dining options. When Kupina was approached about opening a second Central Social Hall, in St. Albert, he didn’t hesitate.

“About 13 years ago I helped open the Kelsey’s restaurant in St. Albert and worked at the Montana’s, so I know the area well,” Kupina says. “I like the St. Albert community and I’m really

passionate about bringing my brand to a community where no one else is really doing what Central Social Hall is doing.”

Kupina and Rota developed Central Social Hall with the growing gastro-pub trend in mind. Kupina notes that not a lot of establishments in Edmonton were leaning in that direction, but the quality of both the restaurants and bars in Edmonton was increasing, which made it the perfect area for Central Social Hall.

“You normally sacri�ce one thing for another,” Kupina explains. “If you want to go somewhere with a really great menu, you won’t be able to watch hockey the same way you would at a pub. But, most pubs you would go to with your buddies to watch hockey normally wouldn’t have the best food. We wanted to bring the great food from the restaurants and the atmosphere from the pubs together for a totally unique experience.”

A�er extensive travelling throughout North America to experience the growing gastro-pub trend in other cities, Kupina and Rota knew what they wanted for Central Social Hall. Kupina says many places he visited used fresh and locally

sourced foods in their kitchen, which made a huge di�erence.

“A lot of places still ship in frozen foods for their kitchen,” Kupina says. “But when you taste those fresh meats and fresh vegetables, it makes for such a better dining experience and for really great gastro-pub dishes.”

To help round out what Central Social Hall’s kitchen would o�er, Kupina and Rota partnered with Chef Redgie Salianana and Chef Reubin Major, former

culinary heads of Earl’s restaurant, to create a menu of familiar pub-inspired foods with unique and original takes that raise the Central Social Club standard to high-end casual dining. With daily specials and a menu that changes as food and bar trends evolve, Kupina says Central Social Hall’s clients have high expectations.

“People come downtown looking for better food,” Kupina says. “�ey demanded the food be better, and I think we accomplished that.”

Kupina is excited to repeat their success in St. Albert, and notes that the new space along St. Albert Trail on the corner of Inglewood Drive is presenting its own set of challenges. But with sta� already training for an opening date in early 2015, Kupina is con�dent that Central Social Hall will add a new spark to St. Albert’s dining and night life.

“When we started out, I was just hoping the food would be good,” says Kupina. “But I think we really achieved that happy balance between casual dining and pub experiences, and we’re still o�ering a great product.”

Kupina and Rota continued their business ventures in Edmonton by opening Central Social Hall in 2012. �e downtown Edmonton staple quickly gained a cult following from its fun atmosphere and original drink and dining options. When Kupina was approached about opening a second Central Social Hall, in St. Albert, he didn’t hesitate.

“About 13 years ago I helped open the Kelsey’s restaurant in St. Albert and worked at the Montana’s, so I know the area well,” Kupina says. “I like the St. Albert community and I’m really

passionate about bringing my brand to a community where no one else is really doing what Central Social Hall is doing.”

Kupina and Rota developed Central Social Hall with the growing gastro-pub trend in mind. Kupina notes that not a lot of establishments in Edmonton were leaning in that direction, but the quality of both the restaurants and bars in Edmonton was increasing, which made it the perfect area for Central Social Hall.

“You normally sacri�ce one thing for another,” Kupina explains. “If you want to go somewhere with a really great menu, you won’t be able to watch hockey the same way you would at a pub. But, most pubs you would go to with your buddies to watch hockey normally wouldn’t have the best food. We wanted to bring the great food from the restaurants and the atmosphere from the pubs together for a totally unique experience.”

A�er extensive travelling throughout North America to experience the growing gastro-pub trend in other cities, Kupina and Rota knew what they wanted for Central Social Hall. Kupina says many places he visited used fresh and locally

sourced foods in their kitchen, which made a huge di�erence.

“A lot of places still ship in frozen foods for their kitchen,” Kupina says. “But when you taste those fresh meats and fresh vegetables, it makes for such a better dining experience and for really great gastro-pub dishes.”

To help round out what Central Social Hall’s kitchen would o�er, Kupina and Rota partnered with Chef Redgie Salianana and Chef Reubin Major, former

culinary heads of Earl’s restaurant, to create a menu of familiar pub-inspired foods with unique and original takes that raise the Central Social Club standard to high-end casual dining. With daily specials and a menu that changes as food and bar trends evolve, Kupina says Central Social Hall’s clients have high expectations.

“People come downtown looking for better food,” Kupina says. “�ey demanded the food be better, and I think we accomplished that.”

Kupina is excited to repeat their success in St. Albert, and notes that the new space along St. Albert Trail on the corner of Inglewood Drive is presenting its own set of challenges. But with sta� already training for an opening date in early 2015, Kupina is con�dent that Central Social Hall will add a new spark to St. Albert’s dining and night life.

“When we started out, I was just hoping the food would be good,” says Kupina. “But I think we really achieved that happy balance between casual dining and pub experiences, and we’re still o�ering a great product.”

• Social media will get more diverse. We’re not suggesting that everyone abandon Facebook for Ello just yet. But new stats show that Instagram has more active users than Twitter, for the first time ever! Stay on top of trends, find out where your audience is, and find out where your audience is growing.

• Everyone will be going mobile. You don’t need to design an app for your company, but you will need to make sure that your company website looks great on mobile. Stay on top of your analytics to find out if your website traffic is coming from desktop or mobile.

• SEO will be more important than ever. With so many Internet sessions starting with a basic Google search, your website needs to be top ranked to keep up with the competition.

• You’ll need to start with great content—then share it everywhere. Not only does new, valuable content improve your search rankings, distributing your content widely will increase your digital reach.

• You’ll see more “clickbait,” but it will be more subtle. We’re all sick of seeing headlines like this: “This dog went on a walk that seemed normal, but you’ll never believe what happened next. You’ll never look at walks the same way again after seeing this.” Those blatant grabs for extra clicks are getting tiresome, so marketers are getting smarter. Expect more headlines that encourage you to click, but expect them to be less obvious.

Boomerang kids? Set financial ground rules

SUN MEDIA NEWS SERVICES – For many boomerang kids, moving back home a�er having been out on their own is a welcome opportunity to launch their career, save money for a down payment on their own house or perhaps pay down student debt.Parents are o�en happy to help their child build a solid �nancial foundation, but setting some �nancial ground rules before your son or daughter unpacks their boxes will help reduce the likelihood of con�ict down the road.

“�ere’s a �ne line between helping and helping too much, at which point it becomes very easy for your adult child to become dependent on you and not develop the skills they need to become independent,” Christina Newberry of Vancouver says. She’s the founder of AdultChildrenLivingatHome.com and author of �e Hands-On Guide to Surviving Adult Children Living at Home.

She o�ers these tips:• Hold A Family Meeting

Talk about how long the adult child plans to stay at home and why he/she wants to return home.

“If there’s a purpose for the stay — like paying o� debt or being able to take on a job that doesn’t pay as well but is great experience — then everybody knows what the child is working towards,” Newberry says.

Address the additional expenses the household will incur because of their return — such as increases in grocery and utility bills — and how much they’ll contribute.• Set Measurable Goals

Saving money for a down payment on a house or paying down student debt are admirable but vague goals. Rather, set measurable goals: the adult child will save x-number of dollars per month.

If the adult child has an expressed �nancial goal, it’s “perfectly acceptable” to check in each month to see how well they’re meeting that goal.

“If they’re achieving that goal, it doesn’t matter how they’re spending the rest of their money. �at’s their business,” Newberry says.

• Discuss Expectations Regarding BehaviourIs the adult child going be there for dinner

every night? Is he/she allowed to have their girlfriend/boyfriend spend the night? Is he/she responsible for their own laundry?

“Parents should establish rules so they feel comfortable and other children living in the house also feel comfortable, but they have to recognize that by de�nition an adult child is an adult,” Newberry says.

“People o�en ask me about a curfew. I think it’s perfectly reasonable for a parent to say they don’t want the adult child to come home a�er 11 p.m. if they’re going to be noisy and wake others in the house up.”• Put It In Writing

Putting established expectations regarding behaviour and measurable goals in writing will help prevent both you and your child from overstepping boundaries.

Be sure to include milestones so everybody can see progress is being made. “Even if things become challenging, it will help keep everyone motivated to making things work,” Newberry says.• Enforce Financial Responsibilities

You may be tempted to allow your adult child to live at home au gratis but that might not be in his/her best interest.

It’s good for the adult child to get into the routine of being responsible for monthly expenses, Newberry says.

“It can be bene�cial for the adult child’s self-esteem because it makes it clear they’re being viewed as an adult and a contributing member of the household,” she says. “�ey’re not just mooching o� their parents and having an extended adolescence where they’re not expected to be responsible for anything.”If your adult child has no income, it’s still important to acknowledge their �nancial impact on the household.“�ey can make some sort of �nancial contribution by basically earning their keep and doing things that would cost the parents money — things like babysitting or painting.”
