Dynamyx Gymnastics Club of St. Albert hosted their annual Sweetheart Meet last weekend that included more than 240 competitors and their families. The two-day event showcased athletes in the competitive stream of provincial-level gymnastics. Athlete ranging in age from 6 to 16 competed in seven sessions in Provincial Level 1 (P1) to Provincial Level 4 (P4).

“This competition doesn’t have anything to do with them qualifying for the provincials,” said Cathy Schwer, president of Dynamics. “It’s one of those opportunities to have a chance to compete and see what your competition is like out there. It also gives them an opportunity to perform under pressure in a group setting where they have spectators watching them.”

Athletes representing 17 clubs from across North Central Alberta participated in the event. They included several local Edmonton area clubs, and communities like Wainwright, Cold Lake, Fort McMurray, Lloydminster and Jasper. Coaches and parents watched as the girls competed in four events: bars, floor routine, beam and vault.

“The judges are looking for things like straight legs, strength, core and overall presentation,” explained Schwer. “There are specific things they are looking for, and the scoring is very detailed.” Under the watchful eye of experienced judges, each athlete was scored according to the Canadian Provincial Program (CPP).

Under that program, all athletes start with a score of 10.0, and a degree of difficulty is added to their score for a maximum they could achieve. Their score is then deducted for errors in their routine. For

example, an athlete competing in the vault routine would have a 3.5 degree of difficulty (DD) with a 10.0 base plus 3.5 DD for a maximum score of 13.5. Allowing a deduction of, say, 1.5 (for whatever reason), the score would be 12.0.

“The girls from our club train anywhere from 12 to 20 hours a week. It’s a great commitment and dedication,” said Schwer, adding that many competitors have been involved in gymnastics for anywhere from two to six years. “The highlight for me is having this many athletes here at one weekend. It’s huge, and this is the largest competition we’ve had. Just having these kids come out and do their best and perform their best—we celebrate that.”

Gymnastics, in addition to athletics and swimming, is considered one of three foundation sports by Canada Sport for Life because it builds a solid foundation for young people. The activity also develops useful life skills such as balance, core body strength and confidence.

“The kids work hard all year ‘round, so it’s fun to see them with their team mates, and it’s fun to see parents and their families support them,” said local resident Wayne Green. His daughter was a competitor in the Sweetheart Meet, and he’s also a volunteer with Dynamyx Gymnastics Club. Green estimated the club has about 2,000 athletes involved in the recreational and competitive aspects.

The next round for competitors is the Northern Regional Provincials that will take place Mar. 13 to 15 in Grande Prairie. The top 12 athletes from each category in the north zone will come together, with 24 athletes per age category. That event will determine who advances to the Alberta Gymnastics Federation Provincial Championships scheduled for the weekend of Apr. 17 to 19 in Lethbridge.

Seniors gather to discuss health care concernsGRANT CREESt. Albert Leader

Approximately 40 members of the St. Albert Seniors United Now (NOW) gathered on Feb. 23 in Cornerstone Hall to listen to and express their concerns about health care. “What we are hoping to get addressed is the coverage of physical therapy and chiropractic,” said Dick Tansey, chair of the St. Albert

Chapter of NOW. He noted that the deputy provincial health minister cancelled at the last minute, but another speaker was available.

Michelle Evans, executive director of Pharmaceutical and Supplementary Health Benefits with Alberta Health Services, spoke about her department. She updated the attentive audience on attainable pharmaceutical benefits and

answered questions about the accessibility of health services for seniors.

Another guest speaker was Stephen Khan, member of the legislative assembly for St. Albert. During his introductory remarks, Tansey thanked Khan for meeting the NOW steering committee last November to discuss physiotherapy and chiropractic benefits. During his brief talk,

Khan answered questions about health care and current developments in the provincial economy.

“We’ve got a lot of things on the table in the [NOW] St. Albert Chapter,” said Tansey. “In particular, we are hard at work on affordable housing, and we’ll be doing a presentation at the March 16 [City of St. Albert] council meeting.”

The St. Albert Peewee AA Sabres are the 2015 Quebec Peewee International Hockey Tournament champions. This international tournament is recognized as one of the most elite minor hockey tournaments in the world.

“This was the experience of a lifetime for our kids,” said Tanis MacDonald, team manager. “They were treated like hockey royalty. From managing all transportation and meals and taking care of all of their equipment, they really made these boys feel like rock stars.”

This true team effort was very satisfying after all the long and hard work it took to get the team there. To be accepted to this tournament is no small feat. And it was a much bigger one than

anyone thought it could be.The team took the hard way to the

final by losing to LSA Select Suisse Romande in an overtime shootout that went 11 rounds. They quickly followed that up by winning against the Colorado Avalanche and the SSF-Quebec Cyclones to get to the semi-finals. A 3–0 victory over the Halifax Mooseheads was the golden ticket to the final against the Brandon Wheat Kings. The final was a tense game that went into overtime. Carter Savoie was awarded a penalty shot and scored to win gold in a 2–1 final decision.

After a long f light home and arriving at noon on Monday, the team had to play its first playoff game against Sherwood Park. They won. The Sabres record in regular season is 21–0–1. They play for Blue Division finals on February 27.

“It’s a good chance to showcase the sport, and you’ll be looking at some of the best players of ringette in the province,” said Dwayne Girard, manager of the St. Albert U19 AA Ringette team. As one of the co-chairs responsible for organizing the 2015 Ringette AA provincials this weekend in Servus Place, he’s excited about hosting the tournament.

“It’s a really fast game because the girls can stick their stick inside the ring versus trying to handle the puck down the ice,” said Girard. “You’ll see a lot of really strong skating skills in these girls.” He added that a couple of girls from his team recently played on the Winter Games team in B.C. He described them as “really high-level players.”

More than 1,300 athletes will be on the rink for a series of games, and they are grouped into three categories: U14, U16 and U19. There will be six teams each of U14 and U16 players and another five teams in the U19 category. Girard noted that most of the team from the Canada Winter Games will be at this tournament, and spectators will see dynamic players from Edmonton and Calgary and St. Albert.

“It will be exciting for the St. Albert U19 team. They have a realistic chance of doing quite well because of the three tournaments they went to with the Edmonton and Calgary teams,” said Girard. He added that each team recently won one game each. “The other two teams [U14 and U16] are really

competitive and have had really good records this year against the other provincial teams.”

Girard said 2014 was the first year that St. Albert had AA teams in the U14, U16 and U19 categories, and he is impressed with how well they’ve done. He invites hockey fans to enjoy some ringette action this weekend, particularly during the gold medal finals that will be played in the Go Auto rink on Sunday morning.

St. Albert hosting provincials

Local athletes will be playing in the 2015 Slush Cup Tournament from Feb. 26 to Mar. 1 in Servus Place and other locations in the Edmonton area. It’s the largest indoor youth soccer tournament, and approximately 100 players from 6 Impact Soccer teams in St. Albert will compete this weekend: U10 Girls, U12 Boys, two U14 Boys teams, U14 Girls and U16 Boys.

“This is one of the big spring tournaments in the Edmonton area,” said Gilles Prefontaine, vice-president of Impact Soccer. “What we see is the opportunity for our St. Albert players to participate in a regional competition. It allows them to showcase the strength we have as a club and also really fosters the ability to participate and enjoy friendly competition with other athletes from all over the region.”

According to the tournament website, new this year is that all U10 games will be played in 7v7 format. “Edmonton Minor Soccer Association has adopted this new playing format for the U10s, and, as a member of EMSA, we will be keeping this format for the Slush Cup,” says the website.

All players will be bound by the Alberta Indoor Soccer Rules. The website asked all participants to keep the tournament fun by demonstrating good sportsmanship. It reminded people that the players are kids, this is a game, the coaches are volunteers, the referees are human and this is not professional soccer. St. Albert Firefighters are heading to the roof for the 5th Annual Muscular Dystrophy Rooftop Camp Out which will run March 1 through 4 at Fire Station 2, 100 Boudreau Road. Voting isn’t just important to democracy. Voting is

democracy. You can’t have a successfully run democratic system without the support and votes of the citizens. Internet voting is believed, by many, to be the manner in which many electors will cast their ballot in the future. Internet voting has been successfully conducted in various jurisdictions across Canada and around the world, including municipalities in Ontario, Atlantic Canada, Europe, the Philippines, Australia, and some U.S. states.

While there are many variations to Internet voting, generally the voter casts a vote on an electronic ballot from a dedicated secure website. The voter may access their

ballot using a combination of a unique access code and government-issued identification and, once confirmed as the eligible voter, marks their ballot electronically. Available systems have a robust audit process to maintain high confidence in the result.

There are many advantages to online voting: • Increases voter flexibility: Voters may vote at any time or locwation during the Internet voting period (although Internet voting is not believed to significantly increase voter turnout);

• May increase access to the vote for disabled electors, who may choose to vote from home; • May reduce costs over time: A municipality may require fewer election personnel and fewer voting locations;• May increase integrity of the process: Reduces the number of spoiled ballots common in other voting methods; • Increases vote accuracy: Requires no written marks on a ballot (which can sometimes be unclear, even when tabulated electronically); and • Reduces the time required to tabulate or confirm election results: Data is available instantaneously after confirmation by election officials.

St. Albert has considered this option in the past but rejected it mainly due to fears of hackers

and people misappropriating personal information to vote multiple times. Yet technology continues to improve and, with many more municipalities adopting online voting and proving its integrity, it may be time to revisit the discussion.

I personally don’t want to replace any current method of voting, but I see online voting as another way to engage the non-voting public. Voter turnout will not magically increase by introducing new tools for voting; only true engagement can do that. Asking the right questions and listening to the answers is key.

Voting is the precious right of every citizen. As a city council, we have a moral obligation to ensure that each person can exercise their right to do so.

Last Week: Sturgeon Community Hospital

It was a high-flying morning at the Enjoy Centre this past Tuesday. The team from the business development and tourism office held their

annual business breakfast to showcase the results of their efforts over the past year, talk about the state of the business community in the present and, of course, anticipate what lies ahead.

A tremendous amount of good is coming down the St. Albert pipeline. It is exciting, to be sure.

It was not too many years ago that there was constant frustration in the economic development community here in St. Albert. New businesses would approach the city with a desire to set up shop, and nothing ever seemed available for them. Not the proper-sized lots, not the proper zoning. The reasons were many.

We feel it is safe to say that there is now a solid offering of choices for the business community. Excuses are out the window.

Mountains of dirt are being moved in virtually every quadrant of St. Albert. Soon that dirt will turn to steel. Work continues in South Campbell next to Apex Casino as the new AGLC warehouse is built. The northeast is still buzzing with development around Costco. Ville Giroux, the Cidex development in the northwest near fire station number three is ready to go this year with upward of three new buildings going up. And, of course, in the southwest by the Enjoy Centre in South Riel, GWL is readying to hit their stride in 2015.

Opportunities abound in St. Albert, and maximizing them will take everyone pulling and pushing in the same direction. The job of selling St. Albert cannot simply fall to a select few sitting in the economic development office.

Our politicians need to step up and start making sales calls—all of them and at every level. The business community needs to reach out to their networks and let them know that St. Albert is open for business.

The city unveiled a new toy at the breakfast, a remote-controlled drone with camera attached that flew through the room, showing the audience on the big screen. It was a fun sight to see, and we look forward to the many images that drone will provide in the future. Mostly, we hope, of the city’s dirt turning into tax-paying businesses.

Residential Solid Waste Policy

After the in camera discussion, Council authorized

Administration to start the engineering design

required for this project, with funding provided through a

combination of front-ending by the City and the developers.

Council Members agreed to review proposed City Council Policy C-IS-

07 Residential Solid Waste and provide feedback to Administration

by March 23. Administration will then incorporate Council’s

feedback into a final draft policy for Council approval on April 27.

Swift and sweet message to bullied teenSUN MEDIA NEWS SERVICES – Swift and sweet was the message to an Airdrie, Alta., teen facing near daily bullying.

Caillou Pettis, 14, said he never expected pop icon Taylor Swift would reply to his letter when he decided to write to her on Tumblr.

“I wanted to know what she had to say about bullies and being bullied,” he said. “I was shocked -- she has probably millions of fans, and she just happened to find my letter and reply to it.”

The pint-sized starlet has made a multi-platinum career out of her response to her own scrutiny, with No. 1 single Shake It Off a cheeky, upbeat force to counter the haters.

And true to her direct style, Swift minced no words in her reply to Pettis.

“You will always be criticized and teased and bullied for things that make you different, but usually those things will be what set you apart,” wrote Swift.

“The things that set you apart from the pack, the things that you once thought were your weaknesses will someday become your strengths.”

The exchange has been shared nearly 28,000 times on Tumblr with others posting their own tales of struggle and hardship.

“Some people are also getting bullied I read,” Pettis said. “Some people said, ‘Oh this helped me a lot even though this isn’t to me. This helped me a lot too.’”

The W. H. Croxford high school student said he is no stranger to bullying, be it name-calling or the more extreme.

“Grade 5 or so, I was eating lunch and some kid, some bully, was microwaving popcorn,” he recalls.

“The really hot butter was leftover, so he poured it all over my arms and I got some pretty bad burns.”

Pettis’ father Darren said he’s proud of the message his son helped put out there and offered a big thank you to Swift.

“It meant so much to him,” said Darren.

Taylor Swift is so amazing. I love everything she does, so much, and I am so glad that she cares about the fans. Fans are everything to Taylor. She cares about them. I’ve been a fan for as long as I can remember. My name is Caillou Pettis, and I love you, your fans, etc. Your songs are so sweet, and they’ve got so much meaning in every lyric, and it really makes me smile to know that a celebrity with tens of millions of fans replies to fans. It’s incredible. I get bullied everyday, and I try to #ShakeItOff. One of the biggest reasons why I get bullied is my name. I couldn’t even tell you the amount of times I’ve been bullied because of it. I’ve been punched for it, etc. I also get bullied because I’m really skinny, but I’m proud of being skinny. I like my appearance. If people don’t

like the way I look, they shouldn’t bully me.

Honestly, I thought it was so cool because it’s different, and herein lies our issue: you will always be criticized and teased and bullied for things that make you different, but usually those things will be what set you apart. The things that set you apart from the pack, the things that you once thought were your weaknesses will someday become your strengths. So if they say you’re weird or annoying or strange or too this or not enough that, maybe it’s because you threaten them. Maybe you threaten them because you’re not the norm. And if you’re not the norm, give yourself a standing ovation. Now I want to tell you that I think you look great the way you are. No one has the right to criticize you for how your body looks, but they will. One thing I’ve learned from experiencing this exact kind of criticism is that no one else can label your body except for you. No one gets to

have a place in your mind if they weren’t invited there by you.

So please do me this one favour: Don’t let their ugly words into your beautiful mind. And if someone punches you again, call the police and report them because that is assault. I’m serious. I really appreciate dresses. You don’t have to think about coordinating tops or bottoms. It’s one piece. My go-to for work is a dress that is casual but classic.

I like pieces that have an edge and pieces that you won’t see a lot of people wearing. It’s important to me to have my own style. What’s fashionable and what’s trending at the moment doesn’t work for everyone.

I’m not going to lie, I do love my labels. Michael Kors for work and casual. The majority of my closet is Michael Kors clothing. I like Michael Kors even better when I can buy it at outlets.

I’m a boutique shopper. Before I go anywhere, I will try the local stores or malls. BellaMaas is my first stop. It’s fantastic.

Shoes and accessories are my guilty pleasure. I’ve learned that if I see something I like it, it’s best to buy it then instead of waiting - because I’ll never find it again.

It’s good to break rules. We’re taught that navy doesn’t go with black or that you can’t mix patterns. The truth is those things can work. Just feel good in what you’re wearing. It’s not what you wear, it’s how you wear it.

My oldest piece of clothing is a black leather jacket that I bought in Greece when I was there on my honeymoon. It is a copy of a Channel jacket. Straight cut, slightly brought in at the waist. For 14 years, it literally was my go-to piece.

“I can make something that has been in my wardrobe for a long time look new and fun,

by adding the colour of the moment.”

In the winter, my colours are very muted. In the summer and spring, I bring in more colour – lovely blues and greens. With the help of the ladies at Cerulean Boutique, who have been encouraging me to wear colour, I have realized that I can wear, and feel good, in colour.

Be comfortable in what you wear. I don’t just mean that the outfit fits right. I mean be confident in the outfit.

I admire Lynn Mandel’s fashion style. Often you’ll see her in mostly black with a colourful, funky jacket over top.

One of my favourite labels is Sympli, a Canadian company. The pieces come in various colours and you can mix and match everything.

I spice up my look with silver jewelry. I like statement pieces. I have a collection of silver bangle bracelets that I started when I was 15. I shop local. I very

rarely venture into Edmonton. When I go into the stores here, they know me. They know what I have already own and what I like.


My personal style is classic. I don’t buy things that are only in style right now. I want quality clothing that’s going to in style next year and the year after. I’d rather have less clothing that is better quality than a closet full of poorly made clothes.

SHOES

I don’t feel like I have a personal style. I don’t even know what the word means. I’m professional but I like to be different and wear a lot of colours. More often than not, I am put together whenever I’m out the house. I’m mostly in skirts. I find them more comfortable than jeans.

I have two black skirts that I’ve held onto for at least 10 years that are still in style. They flatter my figure and I can easily match them with any colour sweater or blouse. I wear them all the time.

I like to shop local and that’s not just because I am a city councillor. I’ve always shopped local. It’s just good for business. I also find it easier. I enjoy shopping at Flash Fashion, Cerulean Boutique and Ennoja.

I have a lot shoes, I’ll admit that. Shoes are the one thing that I will spend a lot of money on. They are a guilty pleasure for me. I have bought shoes just because I love them and then I’ll go find an outfit to wear with them. I don’t have as many shoes as some ladies, but I probably have 30 pairs.

I definitely go with what’s trending for the season. My favourite colour is yellow and I wear a lot of purple too.

Q Vacation this year... you’re heading to?A I am heading back to Maui to learn advanced Lomi Lomi

Massage and Kau Lua which is Hawaiian Back Walking. Yes its

work related but its what I love to do. Maui is so special to me

it’s a very powerful place and I can not imagine a better vacation

then being in Maui learning what I love!

Q The weekend in St. Albert, what are you doing?A Sometimes I sneak in to the office (and usually get kicked out

since its my day off). Most of the time though my husband and I

have a quiet weekend around the house, or I spend time with my

mum. The odd Sunday we have dinner at my parents

had our wedding reception there!

Q Best thing about your job?A There are so many things! I love the girls I work with, I am so

fortunate that we are all so close I love going into work we are all

so close its like working with family! But I also love my clients

they are amazing and they to have become like family. And Of

course I love what I do, healing people is my passion!

Q Favourite movie?A Hands Down…Benny and Joon! Its fun and quirky…best of all

QWhat’s your goal for your business over the next 12 months?A We have an exciting year ahead! By the end of mid year we

should have our expansion done and in full swing! We are

adding 3 rooms so we can do facials, body scrubs/wraps and

couples massage! Its been hectic trying to plan it

all but its going to be fun decorating, hiring new

team members and offering more services!

Q Any advice you can give St. Albert residents,regarding your industry?

A Do your research of your service provider!

For massage make sure that you are seeing a

registered therapist! If you are looking for a

little more check what extra training the

therapist has. Myself I have specialized

training for pre-natal and Hawaiian

healing. Melanie who works with me

has hot stone training! All RMT work

so differently too (Melanie and I both

have very effective treatments but are

completely different) so if you don’t

like that massage by one RMT at a

clinic don’t write the entire clinic off

try another RMT at that location (we

are not offended if you choose to see

someone else!) When it comes to esthetics

do lots of research! Make sure your

esthetician has proper training and uses

the proper tools! Ethics is an unregulated

industry for your health and safety see a

certified esthetician! If it seems to good to be true

it probably is!

QWhat book can you read over and over again?A Romeo and Juliet. I have always loved

Shakespeare and I started reading it in grade 5!

Q Do you have any hidden talents?A I can play the Bodhran (Irish Hand Drum). My Celtic

Roots run strong in the family. I dance and play bodhran

and my little brother plays the bagpipes, fiddle, flute and

guitar.

Q Favourite hobbies?A I love Zumba! I have been a dancer most of my life (Highlandfor a few years as a kid and I just started it again! Also I havebeen Cape Breton Step Dancing for 10 or so years!)

QWhat sets you apart in your business?A When you come in you know we are passionate about ourjobs. We are small and cozy and it feels like family. We get manycompliments on how we mesh so well together and you can feelthe love!

A MindBody…its our work app. I am alwayschecking it…even from home whoops! I like to knowhow the day is going at work and who has bookedit ect.

Q You would describe your sense of style as ... ?A Laidback/hippie. All my life I have liked to havemy own quirky style. I have never really followedtrends. SUN MEDIA NEWS SERVICES – The Alberta government is projecting 31,000 fewer jobs in 2015 as falling oil prices put the screws to Canada’s golden goose economy.

BBC News reports that Michael Zuk, a deOn the bright side? They’re also projecting a $465-million surplus this fiscal year despite a $644 million hit to bitumen royalties.

In its third quarter update for the first nine months of fiscal year 2014-15, the government expects to post a $465-million change in net assets and a consolidated surplus of $361 million, which includes school districts, universities, colleges and health authorities as well as external corporations and the environmental monitoring agency.

The surplus runs contrary to an earlier statement by Premier Jim Prentice that Alberta would post a $500 million deficit.

“We have taken steps to protect our financial position that will help keep us in the black,” Prentice said Tuesday.

“Contract settlements made by previous administrations and significantly lower resource revenues have created a very challenging fiscal outlook for Alberta. This requires a reset of our fiscal foundation to address a $7 billion revenue gap.”

A sharp drop in oil prices has moved the government’s non-renewable resource revenue forecast down by $503 million,

with bitumen royalties expected to drop $644 million by the end of 2014-15. While initially budgeting average West Texas Intermediate (WTI) prices of $95 per barrel, the government is now forecasting an average of $79 per barrel.

A falling exchange rate, now forecast at roughly 88 cents US to Canadian dollar, will cushion falling energy revenues but real gross-domestic product is now forecast at only 0.6% growth in 2015 due to a pullback in energy investment.

Oil and gas investment is expected to decline by 30% in 2015. The province is predicting a 1% increase in job growth that is actually a slowdown compared to the 2.2% job growth seen in 2014. The result is an expected loss of 31,800 jobs, largely in oil-related fields, meaning 2015 will be one of the weakest years for job growth in the past 25 years.

“Let’s be clear, we’re about $300 million in the black and that could disappear in a heartbeat,” warned Finance Minister Robin Campbell, noting the low exchange rate and corporate tax boost are helpful but not a solution.

“The combination of all of those things has actually helped us but I would suggest to you that if the oil prices were to drop considerably over the next month, we could see that very small surplus disappear quite rapidly.”

Chamber proposes new downtown buildingLEADER STAFFSt. Albert Leader

The St. Albert Chamber of Commerce presented to City Council on Monday about their proposed new development for Perron District in St. Albert. The new building would encompass a ground floor of 10,000 square feet of retail space and 40,000 square feet of office space right in the downtown core. Also included would be parking for at least 400 cars in the multi-story parkade.

“We are very excited about this new project,” said Barry Bailey, chair of the St. Albert Chamber of Commerce. “This committee has been meeting for three years and is currently developing the complete business plan and gathering a team of experts to form the working group. We feel very strongly that this facility is an excellent fit with the DARP plan for our downtown.”

The proposed location for this new building is on St. Anne Street just across

from City Hall. This is City-owned land that is designated for a civic building. It is proposed that the land either be leased to the Chamber for 99 years or be sold for $1. The Chamber of Commerce sees this as a great opportunity to partner with the City of St. Albert, and hopes that they

would become one of the main tenants. The design would allow for the possible walkway to be constructed over to St. Albert Place.

The anticipated cost of the building is between $40 and $50 million dollars, excluding the site and servicing. Annual

operating costs are targeted at between $1.5 and $1.8 million dollars. The capital needed to fund the project would come from local and provincial government grants, as well as sponsorship, fundraising and internal sources of revenue. It is anticipated that the Chamber would apply for $5 million in local capital grants.

Past chair and building committee chair, Mike Howes, feels strongly that this is a perfect fit for downtown. “When we started planning for a new building, it was not on this scale. But after reviewing our options and analyzing our needs, we saw great need for this type of facility. This is essential to our downtown plan and can meet the needs of St. Albert now and for many more years.”

This may alleviate the shortage of downtown parking and office space. By increasing the daily number of visitors to the downtown, current and future business in the area would be impacted significantly. The feedback received to date has been extremely positive.

Optimism abounds at annual business breakfastLEADER STAFFSt. Albert Leader

Optimism, plus the city’s new drone, was flying high at the city’s annual business breakfast held at the Enjoy Centre.

Hundreds from the local business and development community gathered bright and early Tuesday morning to learn about the latest news from the City of St. Albert business, development and tourism department.

Guy Boston, executive director of development for the city, brought excitement to the morning crowd as he highlighted the list of developments currently underway or starting soon.

In addition to the AGLC’s new 500,000-square-foot building located in South Campbell, residents will also take notice this year of significant gains in the new developments of South Riel, from GWL realty advisors and Averton Homes. As well, the Cidex development of Villes Giroux, located in the city’s northwest by fire station number 3, and the Perron district road

realignment are scheduled to start this week as part of their role in DARP.

The list of 2014 accomplishments included the botanical-loop ride program and various business events like Power Pitch and the new Realtor tour. Their accomplishments also included the new way-finding signs, Perron angle parking, the city’s support, and investment in new events and programs. New festivals included the new Dig In Horticulinary Festival, along with Eek Fest and the new #GENYCEO program. Into 2015, they are continuing to support these events and programs and add new support to the likes of Seven Music Fest and the Night of Artists event through their event stimulus grant program.

Rhys Chouinard, the city’s corporate analyst, presented a range of data that reinforced positive outlooks for the region. The star data was a plotted chart listing the top 10 cities for entrepreneurs in Canada, as provided by the CFIB. The chart, which broke out the surrounding areas as the Edmonton Periphery, showed our region as a leader when it comes to entrepreneurs.

The many city reports that had been completed over the past year, the selling tools for the department, were showcased by Sean McRitchie, the city’s manager of attraction. Leading off with the future industrial land study, he went on to speak briefly about the hotel demand study, the retail market analysis and, finally, the entertainment demand study—the report that may provide the catalyst for getting a new movie theatre in our city.

“Today’s visitor may be tomorrow’s investor,” said Joan Barber, manager of business retention and expansion for the city. She went on to offer that a great focus will be on tourism going forward as it presented one of the best economic development opportunities for the city.

From all accounts, the business and tourism development portfolios are very strong in St. Albert. The positive momentum will be carried through 2015 and far into the future. From building on existing programs to the implementation of new programs, the city is actively moving forward on many fronts that will have large payoffs for the community.

Starting a small business is very trendy these days. Tech startups by young college dropouts and restaurants owned by celebrity chefs seem to gain the most buzz. But another growing group of entrepreneurs may surprise you: military and para-military members.

Military life and entrepreneurial life may not have much in common at first glance. But the move from military to small business owner is a growing trend. Military “boot camps” are popping up across North American to encourage military veterans to choose entrepreneurship, and to ease the transition from one career to the next. When you take a closer look at the skill sets required for each career, it’s easy to see why.

Leadership skills: Leading a squad in the military can’t be directly compared to leading your employees. But both roles require leadership and the ability to inspire your team’s loyalty, honesty and best work.

Crisis skills: In the military and in small business, fires (both real and metaphorical) will happen. The key is being able to put them out quickly, with minimal damage.

Work ethic: If you’re a successful entrepreneur, there might come a day where you have ample pay and vacation time, and a large staff that can run day-to-day operations without you. But to reach that goal, you’ll have to put years of sweat equity into the business. Prepare for long hours in both fields.

Daily decisions: Military leaders make critical decisions day in and day out. Entrepreneurship may not be life and death, but you’ll be faced with constant decision

making. Options for budgets, hiring, contracts, clients and even paint colours will come your way daily.

Military helping small businessThe mess of money stress

SUN MEDIA NEWS SERVICES – Ever notice that when you’re in a room full of people and the subject of personal finances is brought up, the room becomes very quiet?

There is so much uncertainty about what’s the right thing to do when it comes to dealing with one’s finances that most people don’t want to talk about it.

Saying the wrong thing may make them sound foolish and hearing of someone else’s financial exploits can make one feel inadequate in their own dealings. Staying quiet in these situations might make you look like you have it all together. But at some point you will have to address the problem if you don’t feel comfortable about your personal finances or the inevitable stress created by this dilemma will take its toll.

We all have stress in our lives, but according to a recent survey conducted by Leger on behalf of the Financial Planning Standards Council (FPSC), 42% of Canadians rank money as their greatest stress and Canadian women report higher levels of financial stress than men. As women earn more, live longer, increase their share of jobs, and often take control of the family finances, many are reporting loss of sleep, anxiety and overwhelming stress, according to the survey.

It also found that 87% of us feel we could have made better financial decisions in the past. Whether it be starting to save earlier, learning more about

finances, obtaining a better education or job, or spending less along the way, these regrets tend to eat away at us and perhaps paralyze us into further inaction or lead to a feeling of futility about future financial decision making.

Some other troubling findings: millennials are more likely to lie about their personal finances with their friends, family and co-workers than any other generation; more than half of Canadians are embarrassed to talk about their personal finances; and one-third of Canadians believe their friends are in better financial shape.

It also found 61% of Canadians are in a shared relationship with their finances. Of those couples, the ones that aren’t transparent with their partner about money matters argue significantly more than those who share details about their personal finances.

The great work of the FPSC over the years has shown that Canadians with a sound financial plan, put in place with a qualified professional, are able to overcome financial stress and regain control of their financial future. These people enjoy higher levels of financial and emotional well-being compared to those who have no plan.

Personal finances shouldn’t be a taboo subject. The more questions you ask and the sooner you get started with a financial plan, the easier you will sleep and the less stress you will have, knowing you are on track.
