Ministry gathers us and makes us a faith family... Fourth Sunday of Advent: When he discovered that Mary was with child, Joseph resolved to end their engagement with as little disgrace as possible. But obedient to the voice of God, he changed those plans and became instead the protector of the child Jesus and His mother, Mary. God grant that I may be as open to the leading of the Holy Spirit!

Dear Parishioners,

On this Fourth Sunday of Advent, the Church always looks to the figure of Mary as the quintessential person who prepared for the coming of Jesus.

Imagine what ran through her mind, her hopes and dreams, the mysteries that only she knew, what her voice sounded like, the look of her eyes, the fun of her laugh, imagine her great love for Jesus.

Let us be like Mary.

I look forward to seeing you as we celebrate the birth of Jesus on Christmas.

Devotedly yours, Father Gabe

Reflection on Today’s Readings:

FOCUS: God himself will give a sign: a virgin shall conceive and bear a son. Today’s readings remind us that God has been faithful to the covenant promises he made to this Chosen People, Israel. Christ is the long awaited Emmanuel-God with us!

LITURGY OF THE WORD: Isaiah recalls the promise God made to Israel and to the royal house of David: a virgin shall conceive and bear a son. Paul, writing to the Romans, sets out on his mission to proclaim the Risen Christ to the Gentiles. Matthew tells how Joseph, espoused to Mary, comes to know that the child she has conceived is the fulfillment of the promise.

Masses: Sat: 5:30 pm.

Faith for Kids:

“Who can ascend the mountain of the Lord? Or who may stand in his holy place?” Psalm 24:3 Christmas is just a few days away now, but we probably still have some things to

do to get ready. Do you have presents to wrap? Are there cookies to bake? Is it time to clean the family room? Today is also a good day to prepare our hearts for the coming of the Lord. Are there sins you need to ask the Lord to forgive? Do you need to get rid of useless desires that keep you from loving God and other people?

Lord Jesus, help me to welcome you into my heart. Today’s Readings:

Isaiah 7:10-14 ♦ Psalm 24:1-6 Romans 1:1-7 ♦ Matthew 1:18-24

Ministry Equips us to deepen our love for God and share our faith…

Helpful tips for outdoor fun during the holidays - During the increasing cold weather during the holidays, make sure children’s underclothing, gloves, and

shoes stay dry. Cutting down your own tree for the holiday may start a wonderful family tradition. However, use eye protection and use extreme caution when cutting the tree, particularly when a chainsaw is used with children around. Make sure that helmets and other appropriate protection is provided, properly fitted, and used with bicycles, roller blades, and skateboards. For copy of the VIRTUS® article “A quick review of critical holiday safety issues,” email [email protected]. For particular help call the Office of Assistance Ministry @ 213-637-7650.

Fact of Life: Posthumous Paul Walker Movie Lauded for Pro-Life Message

One of the late actor Paul Walker's final movies is drawing praise for its life and family-affirming message. Walker, best known for his role in the "Fast and Furious" franchise, died in a fiery car crash on November 30 of this year. He was 40 years old. The movie is called "Hours". Walker plays a man who faces the death of his wife and premature birth of his daughter as Hurricane Katrina hits. Walker's character defies all odds and gives completely of himself so that his daughter can have a chance at staying alive, an incredibly life-affirming message. Executive producer Peter Safran says that "Walker was incredibly proud of the project....Hours embodies a message that was so important to him, which is that you have to do everything you can to keep friends and family safe." CHRISTMAS - A young mother, her eyes shining with fatigue, who is arranging her hair; a father who finds himself alone with his pretty wife and baby, straightening the stable to make himself useful in some way; shepherds who bring cheese and perhaps also some curdled milk; sheep who look at their shepherds while bleating; a donkey who is

eyeing his manger changed into a cradle; an adorable swaddled baby whom one calls Savior, Christ and Lord: This is the manifestation of the goodness and the tenderness of God. This is the most fantastic birth in the history of humanity, the one which changed the face of the world! This is how far God humbled and compromised himself with us! This is Emmanuel! — From God’s Word Is Our Joy, Vol. 1 by Lucien Deiss, CSSp, copyright © 1998, World Library Publications. p. 73

A Prayer for Christmas Child of Bethlehem, grant that we may share with all our hearts in this profound mystery of Christmas, out into our hearts this peace for which we sometimes seek so despe- rately and which you alone can give us. Help us know one another better, and live as brothers and sisters, children of the same Father. Reveal to us also your beauty, holiness and purity. Awaken in our hearts love and gratitude for your infinite goodness. Join us all together in your love, and give us your heavenly peace. - Bl. Pope John XXIII
