THE THEME God rules history and can even use legitimate authority and hierarchi-cal systems that benefit others, as the Emperor Cyrus rebuilt ancient Israel coming out of captivity. We acknowledge that we are members

of a civil society governed by authority deserving of its just due. But, as Christians, we are bound by a higher authority, one that calls us to love of God and love of neighbor.

  • . OCTOBER 17/18, 2020 ST. ANDREW R.C. CHURCH PAGE 3 From Fr. Peter’s Desk 29th Sunday In Ordinary Time Dear Parish Family: In our First Reading from the Book of Isaiah, we hear Isaiah extol Cyrus as God’s anointed. Cyrus was not even Jewish, but he liberated the Jewish people when he conquered Babylon so Isaiah considered him sent by God. Cyrus allowed the Jewish peo-ple to return to Jerusalem and worship freely. Believing God to be behind all things, they con-cluded that Cyril’s power and benevolence, must come from God. Scripture scholars tell us that Paul’s First Letter to the Thessalonians was probably written earlier than any other book of the New Testament, ap-proximately twenty years after Jesus’ death and resurrection. In the very first verse, Paul refers to that community as a church. It is a forerunner of what has become the Church, a Christian commu-nity of thousands of dioceses, hundreds of thou-sands of parishes, and over a billion people. Our Gospel quotes a famous phrase “Repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God, what belongs to God”. Although Jesus was giving a response to the Pharisees, who sought to entrap him, it also provides a wise perspective to us today. We are all just temporary caretakers of all that we have. We surrender it all when we die. So what belongs to God? All comes from God and all goes to God, so ultimately all things belong to God. My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, as we gather together today as God’s children, we are reminded that the daily choices we make in our lives should reflect that God is first in our lives. Let us reflect on all the gifts God has given us and lift our hearts and voices in thanksgiving and praise. May God Bless You All, Fr. Peter

STEWARDSHIP Stewardship Reflection Jesus tells the disciples of the Pharisee’s to repay God what belongs to God. As stewards, we should understand the im-

portance of accepting the gifts God has given us and using them for Him.
