My dear family of St. Andrew the Apostle!
What do you say to this statement: “I am personally opposed to stealing, but if someone steals, he or she should have a right to do so and be protected by law.” Does that make sense to you? “I am personally opposed to hate crimes against Catholics or Hispanics or Moslems or atheists or the Chinese people, but if someone wants to kill a Catholic or a Hispanic or a Moslem or an atheist or a Chinese person, he or she should have the right to do so and be protected under law.” How about: “I am personally opposed to abortion, but if someone should choose abortion, she or he should have the right to do so and be protected by law.” Can you see the inherent contradiction in these statements, that seem to think there is a way to have a private position and a public position? Various people throughout our recent history in our country and world hold to such contradictory positions. In public comments, for example, they may identify themselves as Catholic, yet they want abortion to continue to be legal, as it slaughters over a million children on American soil each year. As Fr. Frank Pavone of Priests for Life reminds us all, this kind of thinking “contradicts the Catholic teaching on abortion, namely, that the child in the womb must be protected.” But my personal beliefs should not affect my public actions, many have said. Yet the person who holds private beliefs is one and the same as the person who permits them publicly — one person, one name, one conscience. In issues that affect intrinsic goods, like the right to life, to which the Declaration of Independence testifies that it is an inalienable right from our Creator, there is only one Catholicism, one teaching — and that is, as the Catechism of the Catholic Church beautifully summarizes, “The inalienable right to life of every innocent human individual is a constitutive element of a civil society and its legislation: ‘The inalienable rights of the person must be recognized and respected by civil society and the political authority. These human rights depend neither on single individuals nor on parents; nor do they represent a concession made by society and the state; they belong to human nature and are inherent in the person by virtue of the creative act from which the person took his origin. Among such fundamental rights one should mention in this regard every human being’s right to life and physical integrity from the moment of conception until death” (CCC 2273, quoting also Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith, Donum Vitae III). That is the Catholic Church’s one position, consistent with our human nature, and requires only a good, healthy mind reasoning properly. The innocent, like all babies in their mothers’ wombs, have a right to life, and Pope Francis embraces this truth, when he says, “Among the vulnerable for whom the Church wishes to care with particular love and concern are unborn children, the most defenseless and innocent among us” (Evangelii Gaudium, November, 2013). Catholicism calls for acceptance of all the teachings of the Church, including the teaching that the unborn child is to be treated as a person. To say you are a Catholic and then to hold that these children can be legally killed is not to treat them as persons, and not to be truly an active Catholic. Mother Teresa of Calcutta, whom Pope Francis just canonized, said this in Washington DC at the 1994 National Prayer Breakfast: “The greatest destroyer of peace today is abortion, because it is a war against the child, a direct killing of the innocent child, murder by the mother herself. And if we accept that a mother can kill even her own child, how can we tell other people not to kill one another? Any country that accepts abortion is not teaching its people to love, but to use any violence to get what they want. This is why the greatest destroyer of love and peace is abortion.” Can a person claim to be Catholic and yet support the legal killing of more than a million children a year in the United States alone? Does that make any sense? The only logical explanation for this is that such a person is not consistent and honest, trying to hold onto two positions that are not possible to hold. What should a truly honest and consistent person do in such a case: either call for the protection of unborn children, or admit that you reject the call of the Catholic Church to do so. Fr. Frank Pavone offers a further challenge to people who think in this “doublespeak” way — the challenge simply to describe what they defend: “If you support keeping abortion legal, why don’t you describe for the American people what an abortion is. Use the words of the practitioners who perform the procedure.” For instance, Dr. Martin Haskell, who was an abortionist, in sworn testimony in a US District Court in Wisconsin on May 27, 1999, testified “Typically the skull is brought out in fragments rather than as a unified piece….” Why do those who support abortion not quote in their speeches and presentations the precise actions in abortion they think should be legal? And if they cannot even describe these actions, why should we tolerate them? Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted of Phoenix wrote in a recent publication to help Catholics reflect on their role in public life, “Catholics should always be respectful of the human dignity of others, including people of different faiths, or no faith at all. Having said that, however, Catholics should not be afraid to embrace their identity or to put their faith into practice in public life. In fact, each of the faithful has a call to evangelization and to share the good news of Christ with the rest of the world.”

October is the Month of the Holy Rosary. Let’s pray it daily and pray it often…
To pray the rosary for children, and even more, with children, training them from their earliest years to experience this daily “pause for Prayer” with the family, is admittedly not the solution to every problem, but it is a spiritual aid which should not be underestimated. -St. John Paul II

Letter from Bishop R. Daniel Conlon in regard to World Mission Sunday
My dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, “Mercy Changes the World!”
On World Mission Sunday, October 23, Pope Francis invites each of us to be part of that change for our world of great need, calls us to announce the mercy of God, “the beating heart of the Gospel” (Misericordiae Vultus, 12).
On this 90th World Mission Sunday, our diocesan family joins our brothers and sisters around the world who will gather at the Lord’s Table to celebrate, with great joy, our common vocation as missionaries. Our prayers and financial help, through the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, support the work of the Mission Church, its witness to Christ and service to the poor.
“Let us not close our hearts within our own particular concerns, but let us open them to all of humanity.”
Message for World Mission Sunday, 2016
I echo these words of our Holy Father, asking you to open your hearts as you connect on World Mission Sunday with every corner of the globe… with the Americas, where catechists travel to remote areas to bring the Good News of God’s great love to families; with Europe, where new churches are being built to welcome faith communities, renewed after years of persecution; with Asia, where six million children receive an education from Religious Sisters in some 16,000 Church-run elementary schools; with the Pacific Islands, where 1,000 young men are preparing for the priesthood, to bring the Lord’s healing hope and peace to those in need; with Africa, where those who are sick are provided with loving care at 6,400 Catholic hospitals and small clinics.
And don’t forget the corners of the globe where the Diocese of Joliet serves. Your support helps us to continue our missionary work in the Philippines, in Bolivia, in Africa and in the Navajo nation. Each year hundreds of adults and young people donate two weeks of their time and talent to connect with other people in diverse cultures and live their vocation as missionary disciples.
Grateful always for your generosity of spirit and heart, and confident of your missionary commitment to share the joy of the Gospel and help the poor, I pray for blessings for you and your families!
Faithfully yours in the Lord, Most Reverend R. Daniel Conlon, Bishop of Joliet

How many times have we read or heard about someone who’s gotten into trouble—maybe even fired from a job—because of a brush with the law? While our “Christian” minds tell us to be sorry and even pray for the person, a little voice inside our heads may also be saying, “I’m glad I would never do anything like that.”
And perhaps we wouldn’t. But are there some things we do that are still not pleasing in God’s eyes? Today’s readings caution us not to look so intently at someone else’s wrongdoing that we overlook our own weaknesses and shortcomings. When we measure ourselves against the worst people we can think of, we come out looking pretty good. There is a danger, however, in using someone else’s behavior as a way of reflecting our own goodness. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

giant game of Simon Says. We raised over $250.00 for the CEF
which provides scholarships to students in need throughout the Diocese.

GRANT ETERNAL REST, LIGHT AND PEACE TO ALL FAITHFUL DEPARTED: Dawn Pattersen, Edward Rodriguez
Please call the parish office by Monday at (815) 886-4165 for the name of your loved one to be placed for 3 weeks on our short term prayer list. Also, please call the parish office, if you are hospitalized and would like a visit from our hospital minis-try team or homebound and in need of communion.
Hospital Visitation of Parishioners Please remember that if you or any family members find yourselves in a hospital, be sure to let them know you are a parishioner at St. Andrew’s — it doesn’t hurt to say it a few times, either! Whenever we priests, deacons or Eucharistic Ministers come to visit, we check the hospital list of parishioners printed under “St. Andrew.” But if you’re not listed as a parishioner of St. Andrew, we won’t know you’re even there! We do not want to miss you! You can always call us, too, at the office, ext. 301. Thank you. May the Lord Jesus be with you all your days, to love and be loved by Him, to honor and serve Him, as He honors and serves us!
A COMMUNITY OF WORD AND SACRAMENT
SACRAMENTS OF INITIATION CATECHUMENATE
The Catechumenate is a community which gathers those adults who have not been baptized, and seek deeper insight into the Christian faith.
BAPTISM OF CHILDREN We joyfully celebrate the baptism of children of Christian households which are joined to our weekly worship, and have active registration in our parish community for at least 3 months. After registration in the parish, please attend an Evening of Awareness, if you have not attended a class in the past two years, to register for Baptism and select a date. Classes are presented on the first Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. in the Parish Hall. Baptism is celebrated on the third Sunday of the month at 1:30 p.m.
EUCHARIST AND CONFIRMATION Formation for those coming first to the table of the Lord as children is infused into the efforts of our school and Faith Formation Office. Confirmation formation is a two year process completed in eighth grade. Please call the Faith Formation Office for more information.
SACRAMENTS OF COMMITMENT MARRIAGE
Marriage preparation is a six month process of prayer, reflection and study. Couples work with both the presider and a sponsor couple through this process. Please note that this six month period of preparation is essential.
ORDERS Those seeking assistance in discerning a call to ordained ministry are encouraged to call the parish offices.
SACRAMENTS OF HEALING RECONCILIATION
Reconciliation is available each Saturday afternoon, 3:00pm, Wednesday evening, 5:45-6:45pm, through seasonal communal services, and by appointment.
ANOINTING Anointing of the Sick is offered through seasonal services, and always by request. If hospitalized, please immediately seek anointing from the Catholic chaplain.
BULLETIN SUBMISSIONS
Submissions are usually due Fridays at noon, nine days prior to publication. Send to [email protected]. Some early deadlines apply during the holidays.
I would like to have my house blessed. Please contact me to make arrangements.
