“To banish imperfection is to destroy expression, to check exertion, to paralyze vitality.” John Ruskin, The Stones of Venice

These past two weeks are traditionally the weeks in which we undertake our marketing trips to Johannesburg and Cape Town respectively, punctuated in the middle by a weekend of great sport in Grahamstown. This year did not disappoint - the trips have gone extremely well, their success due in large part to the incredible community of support that we enjoy in each centre. The weekend’s sport was sublime, with great weather and superb hospitality from Kingswood (for the local fixtures of Basketball and Cricket) making for a classic day of summer sport.

In Johannesburg, despite my best efforts, I was allocated a Suzuki as my rental car. It was either an act of supreme irony on the part of its designers or a complete lack of understanding of the English language that led to it being branded a “Swift” - it was anything but - and so I would slowly “zip” through Johannesburg traffic, inadvertently changing lanes from time to time as a consequence of the wind from a passing taxi or a nearby bird.

Intrigued by its character filled blandness, I googled the car to find out more, and was astonished to find out that it has won over sixty motoring awards in its time. Proof, if ever it was needed, it seemed, of the transient and relative nature of success.

Unexpectedly, I found myself growing quite fond of my Swift. It was unpretentious, uncomplicated, its beautiful blue reflected ‘the brand’ well, and it did its job competently without fuss or flourish. It seemed aware of its limitations and did not attempt to compensate for them by pretending to be something that it is not.

It got me thinking of the notion of “glorious imperfection”, that state of balance between perfection and mediocrity. That sense of being comfortable within one’s own skin, yet not complacent. Neither overcompensating for imperfections (for perfectionism is as much an indicator of low self-esteem as is withdrawal or acting out) nor apathetically settling for second best. It is that state of enjoying the journey knowing that the flat, straight Free State roads can end up at the sea, and that each part of the journey has purpose that is never final.

And so as much as success is defined by attainment and relationships, equally important is the ability to realise one’s own unique God given individuality, and to nurture that rather than chasing the ephemeral wisps of photo shopped perfection. To realise that to be gloriously imperfect is, in fact, perfect.

God Bless

Grade 8 InductionThe Newboy Induction took place in the Antony Clark Andrean Resource Centre this week. The Head and Second Head of School delivered a presentation on what it means to be an Andrean. The Grade 8 boys from Upper, Armstrong and Espin officially signed their names in the leather-bound Andrean register on Monday evening and The Newboy Induction concluded on Tuesday evening with the remaining Grade 8 boys from Merriman, Mullins and Graham signing their names in the register!

After the induction ceremony into St Andrew’s College, the boys left the ARC and were greeted by teachers and prefects, no longer as Newboys but rather as new Andreans.

IEB Design Conference. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .For the first time, our whole Design team had the opportunity to attend the IEB Design conference where we were briefed by the markers and moderators on the 2016 Grade 12 written paper and practical work. In the process, we were given some useful tips for future teaching. We were also informed of some changes to the Design subject assessment guidelines and were given a layout of the contextual theme for 2017 Design, Grade 12 – ‘Ontological Design’.

The highlight of our day, though, was the talk given by the keynote speakers, ‘Doktor & Misses’. These two successful young designers from Johannesburg inspired us all with their story and their exciting designs. After a good day away, we came back well informed, knowledgeable, inspired and excited to teach Design to our Grade 10 –12 students. As well as this, we had enjoyed socialising with other Design teachers and sharing concerns and commonalities.

SPORTWhat a time the Blitzbokke and the Proteas have been having of late! Both have been absolutely clinical in their commitment and execution. We can all learn some great lessons from them in terms of putting in the hard work, handling pressure, creating a happy, winning environment and enjoying the subsequent success. As the build-up to the Super 15 rugby season gets into its final stages, it is great to see that a number of College old boys will be turning out for the Southern Kings. Tyler Paul (Flank), Sintu Manjezi (Lock) and Ross Geldenhuys (Prop) should all feature on this world stage. Also in the wings is prop, David Murray, who has been very much part of the EP Kings set-up and may well get a look in at Super Rugby level. It is great that these young men are able to show the College boys that all this is possible with the necessary hard work and commitment. Sintu Manjezi in action

We are into a very busy period of the term from a sporting perspective. Last week saw the U14A, U15A and 2nd Water Polo teams enjoying success at their respective tournaments. The U14s showed tremendous improvement in finishing third at the Jason Murray Tournament hosted by Selborne College, whilst the U15s did really well to finish as runners-up at the Grey High School Festival. The 2nds played in the Inaugural Pearson National Tournament for 2nd Teams and emerged triumphant in clinching the overall trophy.

Our U15 Tennis side, made up entirely of U14s, finished a very creditable seventh at the Boland Landbou Festival in Paarl. They won two and lost two matches but were the only team to beat the eventual tournament winners, Paarl Gym. On Monday our 1st Team took on Graeme College in a Knowling Shield fixture

and managed to clinch a close encounter 3-2. After the completion of the Albany Schools Tennis Champs a number of boys have been named in the various Albany Tennis teams. Scott Cuthbert is in the Open team, Dylan Bowker, Ryan Stoddart and Ignus Potgieter are in the U16 team and Dylan Marx, Jurie Norval, Luke Taylor and William Emslie are in the U14 team. Dylan Bowker won the U16 section of the Albany Champs with Ryan Stoddart runner-up. Well done to all these boys. Next Monday the 1st Team will take on Kingswood College in a Knowling Shield fixture at Kingswood.

Our Squash Club successfully hosted the Annual Dave Hodgson Festival on Friday and Saturday. There was plenty of quality squash played with the College side enjoying mixed fortunes. A convincing win against Dale College and a tight victory against Stirling High School, was tempered by a sound beating by a good Selborne College side and a competitive defeat to Graeme College. The weekend was enjoyed by all.

There was very exciting Basketball at the Kingswood College High Performance Centre last Saturday. The U16A team went down narrowly to their Kingswood counterparts losing 8-9, whilst the 2nd side proved too strong for the Kingswood opponents, winning 44-12. The 1st Team match was a real humdinger, with College enjoying a solid lead going into the final quarter. A spirited fightback by Kingswood saw the scores draw level with a few minutes to go. Showing good composure, the College team managed to convert their remaining chances to win the game 29-25. College dominated all their other fixtures played on the weekend.

Our Cricket Club enjoyed a very successful weekend against Kingswood College. In most all of the games College won the toss and batted first. They were able to post significant totals and good bowling performances saw Kingswood being bowled out relatively cheaply. The exception to this was the 2nd XI game where College staged a sterling recovery from 87/7 to post 187 all out and bowled Kingswood out for 100, whilst the 3rds had a close finish after scoring 226 all out. Kingswood chased hard before being bowled out for 212. The 1st XI batted superbly to get to 249/3, with Peter Jarvis scoring 111 and Chris Benjamin 76. After a wobbly start, a young Kingswood side shored up the middle order for a while before being bowled out for 104. There

Congratulations to Peter Jarvis who celebrated his 100 vs Kingswood College on Saturday

were some other extraordinary performances on the day, with Jurgens Swart scoring 102 not out and taking 5/23 for the 4th XI and Miles Danckwerts (2nd XI) and Cameron Deetlefs (U15B) bagging hatricks!

Our U14 Rowers participated in the Grey High School U14 Regatta on the Swartkops River on Saturday where they gained valuable experience in good rowing conditions. On Sunday a really good field of 54 golfers turned out on the Belmont Valley Course for Inter-House Golf. Damp conditions made scoring difficult but the top finishers, Heinrich van Deventer (77), Nic Poole (79) and Ethan Breetzke (79) all had a good day. The overall results saw Espin House lift the trophy with Mullins House in second place. On Saturday a group of swimmers took part in the Uitenhage Gala with Martin Wolmarans collecting two golds and two silvers, Davoren Swales a silver and two bronzes, Iain Macpherson a gold and Haydn John a silver. On Sunday Martin swam in the 3km NMBA Open Water event in PE finishing 4th and knocking some two and half minutes off his previous best! Congratulations to Martin Wolmarans who has been selected for the EP team to swim in the 3km SA Nationals Open Water event.

Heats have started for Inter-House swimming and this will build up to the two school galas on Wednesday 22 February.

Congratulations to Espin House and the Poole brothers Christopher (left) and Nicholas on winning the Inter-House Golf Competition

Martin Wolmarans was awarded two gold and two silver medals at the Uitenhage Gala last weekend

This week our rowers are all in East London for the Annual Selborne Sprints and Buffalo Regattas. This is one of the major regattas on the South African calendar and we are hoping for strong performances. Our rowers participated in The Selborne Sprints yesterday and today with the Buffalo Regatta on Saturday. Great results thus far, both the under U15A and U15B Quads qualified for the A final, both 2nd U19 pairs, Rorke Wilson,/Matt Harris and Jake England/Geir Wilson, qualify for A final and Jason Thomas won the heats of the under U15A Single Scull. Well done, boys! All the best for the finals.

Our 1st Squash team are in Bloemfontein for the St Andrew’s School Festival this weekend and will hope to build on the experience of last weekend’s event.

Our 1st and U15 Tennis players travel to Queenstown on Friday to play their inland counterparts, whilst the Cricket Club also take on Queen’s on Saturday, with the 1st XI starting at 09h00 in Queenstown. On Sunday the 1st XI will play host to the visiting Wellington College team. This should provide an interesting test for the team ahead of their tour to the UK, where they will once again play a fixture against Wellington.

It is a big weekend for the Water Polo Club as the 1st and 2nd teams take part in the Annual Vides Tournament, hosted by Selborne College. As the defending champions the pressure will be on as they go out to defend their title. The U15A side will take part in the Port Rex Tournament, also in East London.

With all this activity going on I hope that you enjoy the weekend, whether it is supporting your sons first hand or wherever you are.
