SAINT JOSEPH, HUSBAND OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY March 19

Joseph, someone once joked, was indeed the perfect husband: the only major character in Jesus’ story who never utters a word! But the Gospel recounts and the liturgy celebrates his silent witness of faith-filled deeds: “With a husband’s love he cherished Mary, the Virgin Mother of God; with fatherly care he watched over Jesus” (Preface of Saint Joseph, Sacramentary). Catholic devotion, therefore, hails him as patron-protector of the universal Church. Some cultures set a festive “Saint Joseph’s Table,” welcoming the poor and strangers to feast with family and friends. Tradition keeps today as the anniversary of his death, which we presume was peaceful, with Jesus and Mary present. Thus, Catholics invoke Joseph as Patron of a Happy Death. Descended from David’s house, which God finished “building” through Joseph’s provision of a home for Mary and Jesus, he was, fittingly, a carpenter by trade; thus, patron of workers. Spring, nature’s rebirth, begins between his feast and Annunciation (March 25), appropriately, since Joseph’s silent obedience and Mary’s “Let it be done to me according to your word” (Luke 1:38) usher in humanity’s spiritual rebirth.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION We make transitions along life’s journey, and search for meaning. Watch an infant take those first wobbly steps. Inevitably they are toward the arms of a dear one, and the gleeful smile and wordless laughter let us know that the baby understands that the whole world is renewed in an instant. Parents may see that wide eyed smile again some years later as they flip car keys in the teenager’s direction, and by God’s grace at in between moments of forgiveness and affirmation. Sacraments open a window to the blessings of everyday life and help us claim their deep meaning. A voice from a fiery bush warned Moses to take off his shoes because he stood on “holy ground.” Your first steps, your first word, taking your place at the family table, stirring to new love, forgiving and being forgiven: all of this is holy, laden with meaning, full of possibilities. Sacraments are not escape pods from the realities of the everyday; rather they invest us ever more deeply in life and recruit us for the kingdom inaugurated by Jesus. We take baby steps all our life long. In the world of sacrament, they are always directed toward the arms of a loving God, and always on the common holy ground of a community’s life.

The Activated Disciple 40-Day Challenge Continues throughout Lent

March 17, 24, 31 On April 7 there will be a Seder Meal

Pick up your study set after Mass, stop by the office or pick up on

Tuesday night at the beginning of program. $15.00 per person

Procedures for Flu season and Coronavirus ♦ There will be no offering of communion under the form of wine (remembering that Christ is fully present

under either the form of bread or wine). ♦ No longer receiving the Host on the tongue (remembering that neither form of receiving communion is

more reverent or better than the other). ♦ In giving communion on the hand, the minister should not touch the communicant. ♦ In places where those not receiving communion are blessed instead, the blessing is given without touching

them. ♦ The sign of the peace is no longer shared by a handshake or hug. Instead, a simple bow or nod to one another is used. ♦ If the parish holds hands at the Our Father, this is also stopped. ♦ Ministers (including clergy and ministers of hospitality) are asked not to shake hands when they greet parishioners. ♦ On Good Friday, the Cross will be venerated by a bow or genuflection, not by touching or kissing. ♦ Holy Water fonts/stoups (with standing water) are emptied. Large immersion fonts with circulating water

are to be emptied and cleaned/disinfected weekly.

Our first confessor in the new confessional, John

Cummings

Our new confessionals are finished!!! Be sure to stop by

and sit for a minute.

Thank you to Dave McCartney, general contractor, and his team for taking such great care and pride on our building. Dave donated the beautiful wood panels covering the base of the columns. Thank you to parishioners Mark Mancha, architect, and Bill Ashton, structural engineer, for donating their professional services. Thank you to the Building and Grounds Committee for their time and talent in researching the project.

Familia 1.2 miles from here …. Guest Speaker at St. Mary’s Lenten Supper

By John Cooper I was invited to be the guest speaker tonight for St. Mary's Lenten Soup Supper. I'd accidentally driven by St. Mary Church once before, but I didn't know exactly how to get there and I didn't want to be late. From the St. Anthony parking lot, I typed St. Mary Church into my phone's map. To my surprise, it said that I was only 1.2 miles away from my new familia (Latin and Spanish translation for family). I shouldn't really say that they are my "new" familia. The Anglo, English, and Latino parishioners at St. Mary's have been part of my Catholic family since the day I was baptized as a 15-day old baby on September 4, 1965. How exciting it was for me to share a bit of my faith journey with these brothers and sisters who will be joining us in a few months. We look forward to getting to know their Catholic faith story. I'm sure their faith story is similar to ours in a lot of ways, but also very unique with their own culture and traditions added into the mix. Its exciting and a little scary at the same time. I decided to share my own faith story - the good, the bad, and the in-between. In making ourselves vulnerable, we hope that they would one day feel comfortable with sharing a bit of themselves with us as we become one parish family. Kay Steele, their religious education coordinator gave me a tour of their classrooms. Walking into each classroom space I could feel the presence of the Holy Spirit that's been shared between students and teachers for many years. We pray we continue to foster and support that same learning environment when they join us at St. Anthony. Father Chris Young, the pastor was kind enough to show me the church and to share its rich history of prayer and worship. Through the celebration of the sacraments of the Church, God has blessed countless believers over many years within its beautiful walls. We pray that we continue to celebrate with hearts on fire the liturgical mysteries of our faith when they join us at St. Anthony.

Carlos Valdez, a member of St. Mary's Hispanic Knights of Columbus proudly showed me a wall full of Knight's pictures on display in the parish center. It is in this parish center that one of my host's Alicia Nava shares faith through dance. We pray that we continue to praise God through the Knights, art, music, and culture when they join us at St. Anthony. I came away from this first meeting with "la familia" at St. Mary's with a profound sense of responsibility that we all have to make sure that our merged communities pray, listen, and value each other as brothers and sisters in Christ. I'm confident in our future together because I know my family at St. Anthony's will do all it can to love this new reality into being. Likewise, I know that God has blessed St. Mary's all these years and I am confident that His graces will continue to flow 1.2 miles down the street at St. Anthony's.

In mid-March most addresses will receive a postcard with instructions to participate in the 2020 Census in one of three ways - online, by phone, or by mail. Online and on the phone the census questions are available in English and 12 additional languages. Videos and guides to the form are available online in 59 languages. Every household that hasn’t responded will receive reminder mailings and eventually a paper questionnaire. Then in late April through summer 2020, Census Bureau employees will make in-person visits to addresses without a response. Save time, money and paper - complete your census information online or on the phone in March or early April. Make sure your household is in the count!
