Parish Mission Statement

St. Barbara Parish carries on the faith tradition estab-lished in 1894 by our Slovenian and German ancestors. Like our founders, we are called by Baptism to live as ex-amples of Catholic faith and values, and as witnesses of Christ in the world. Our parish is small in size but great in heart. We are a diverse community who together seek to strengthen faith through liturgy and education, and through service to community in charity. We strive to love God with all our hearts and minds.

Pray for the Sick

Pray for the sick of our parish, our family and f r i e n d s , e s p e c i a l l y T e d L o n g , Andrea Littlejohn, Elizabeth McKeever, Elaine Fields, Joan Crum, Geoff Skundrich, Karen Recrosio, Gloria Fortunato, Edna Koczaja, John Pulford, Mary Rosato, Ann Mary Mazzocco, Kathy D’Amico, Sophie Kramzer, and those in nursing homes and their caregivers; the return of inactive members of our parish to the prac-tice of their faith; the respect of all human life and the end of abortions. We pray for the safety of our troops, their safe return and for their families at home. Call the rectory office if you are homebound or in a nursing home and would like to receive Communion or if you are a patient in a hospital and would like a visit from a priest, please call 412.221.5152.

REST IN THE LORD For several weeks we have listened to readings that have recounted just how arduous the work of prophets and disciples can be. In today’s Gospel, the Lord Jesus listens to the reports of those he had sent out “two by two” to minister to the people. After the apostles reported what they had done, Jesus, recog-nizing their fatigue, says, “Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest awhile” (Mark 6:31). Per-haps this is what the Lord is telling his disciples in the year 2018 as well. We need to pause on our jour-ney of discipleship and simply rest in the Lord. Sun-day Mass provides many opportunities for quiet times, particularly during the periods of silence fol-lowing the readings. Why not take the time today to allow the saving word of the Lord to penetrate your heart during those silent times? Ask the Lord to re-new you in body, mind, and spirit for the arduous work of discipleship. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — I shall gather the remnant of my flock and bring them back to their meadow (Jeremiah 23:1-6). Psalm — The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want (Psalm 23). Second Reading — In Christ Jesus you who were once far off have become near by the blood of Christ (Ephesians 2:13-18). Gospel — When Jesus saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, and he began to teach them many things (Mark 6:30-34). The Lord Is My Shepherd, There Is Nothing I Shall Want – One of the most tender images we have of Jesus is that of the Good Shepherd. Just as a shepherd guides the flock, so Jesus leads us, his flock, keeping us safe, encourag-ing us, placing us on his shoulders when we have strayed as he draws us back into the fold. The Lord’s work as shepherd of our hearts is not limited to a time of trial or need in our lives. Jesus is al-ways, actively leading us and it is the responsibility of each of us as Christians to listen to the voice of the Good Shepherd and follow him on the path of life. Not only does Jesus lead us individually as his sisters and brothers, but also wholly as the Church. The shepherd keeps the flock moving together as one and goes in search of the lost in order that they may be one with the Church again. As we journey On Mission for The Church Alive! we trust in the guidance of Christ the Good Shepherd to lead us and the Church through this time of change. The Lord does not abandon his flock and will strengthen us as we draw closer to him in faith and to each oth-er as the Church. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed.

NEWS FOR LIFE With Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy’s retirement, our President and Senate now have the solemn responsi-bility to appoint a new justice. Let us pray that with God’s help, the next Supreme Court Justice will stand firm for religious liberty and the sanctity of all life. Pray to the Lord that our country would turn our hearts toward Him, and to support the most vulnerable in society – particular-ly the unborn and the aged.

Donate a storage bin and its lid— The Day Center at Family Promise was flooded with 3 inches of water and sewage in the recent torrential rains, and items that were stored in boxes were ruined. Clean up is underway and Family Promise is accepting donations of storage bins with lids to keep safe all our supplies for the homeless families we serve. Contact at Becky Colson at : (412)221-2758 to donate!
