St. Barbe Museum & Art Gallery
Museum of the New Forest Coast
The strip of land between the
New Forest and the Solent has a
colourful history. It is an area that
has been inhabited by smugglers,
salt makers, boat builders and
yachtsmen as well as farmers,
shopkeepers and holiday makers.
St. Barbe Museum looks at
the stories of these people
and shows how their
activities have shaped
Lymington, New Milton
and the surrounding
villages. The museum takes
you on a trip through the district, stretching from the
40-million year old Barton fossils to the present day.
The family-friendly
displays feature
many games and
activities as well as
costume to try on
and original objects
to handle.
The art galleries
feature exhibitions
of national quality.
Details of this
year’s programme
and all of our family
and Friends events
are shown on the
following pages.

The St. Barbe A-Z
27th March - 1st May
To mark the re-opening of the art galleries after
refurbishment we decided to put together our own
exhibition to reflect some of the more intriguing and
quirky items in our collection and to recall some of
our exhibition highlights of the last 12 years.
We are delighted to be able to feature works of art by
Geoffrey Dashwood, Richard Eurich, Sven Berlin and
Kurt Jackson. There will also be an assortment of
gems and oddities we have collected over the last
twenty years. Come in and find out why A is for
American Bittern, M is for Magic, P for Postillion and
Z is for Zebra!

Anne Desmet
Urban Evolution
27th March - 1st May
Anne Desmet is one of the most pre-eminent
printmakers at work today. Urban Evolution features a
broad range of work made by Desmet in the last ten
years demonstrating her fascination with the urban
built environment. Her depictions of buildings and
cities contain recurring themes of urban decay and
renewal.
Desmet is renowned for
pushing at the boundaries
of printmaking practice,
combining technical skill
and architectural vision.
Her large-scale works,
incredible in their detail,
take months to complete.
She has won numerous
awards. The Ashmolean
Museum held a major
retrospective of her work
Towers and Transformations
in 1998. She is Editor of
Printmaking Today.

The Commoners’ New Forest
Photographs by Sally Fear
8th May - 5th June
This exhibition was created to celebrate the
Centenary of the New Forest Commoners’ Defence
Association. It showcases a new collection of Sally’s
photographs, alongside some favourites and some
commoning history.
The exhibition reflects the working Forest and is a
visual record of the commoners whose work lies at
the very heart of the New Forest. The browsing and
grazing of the commoners’ animals plays a central part
in the ecology of the New Forest maintaining a unique
landscape and its varied habitats.
Sally hopes that this exhibition gives people an insight
into the commoning way of life in the Forest.

Five go wild in the
New Forest
8th May - 5th June
Artists are by nature solitary beasts and seldom seen
in flocks. However, the driving force and inspirations
are often very similar, in this case the richness and
beauty of the New Forest and its surrounds.
This exhibition gives you the opportunity to see how
five different artists have approached the local
landscape and its inhabitants through their paintings
and prints. Five are: Robert Greenhalf, Peter Partington,
Dan Powell, Rosemary Powell and Mike Warren.

as plenty to keep hard core fans immersed. Visitors will

Outreach Activities
The outreach project aims to bring local history
exhibitions into rural communities with a series of
exhibitions on the history of Sway, Hordle, Tiptoe,
Everton and Wootton. This area has been witness to
sensational scenes in the history of the Shakers and
the building of Sway Tower, the world’s tallest non-
reinforced concrete building as well as huge changes as
scattered agricultural hamlets grew to become sizeable
villages.
In June and July exhibitions in village halls will bring
these stories to life with the help of images, objects
and reminiscences from local families. These
exhibitions will be mounted with help from the local
community in providing material and helping organise
the exhibitions so that they can better reflect the
experiences and interests of local people. Each
exhibition will include additional events so people can
explore aspects of the exhibition historically and
creatively and contribute to each community’s sense
of self.
If you are interested in finding out more
or getting involved, please contact
Sarah Newman, Community Outreach
and Exhibitions Officer.
