  • From the Pastor’s Desk CONFESSION

Receiving the Sacrament of Penance is one of the greatest consolations any person can have. As human beings we are never perfect. As Christians we are certainly sinners. As tremendously efficacious the sacrament of penance is, it is certainly not easy to come into a confessional and confess one’s sins with a sincere and contrite heart.

Sadly, there are souls who believe that their sins are unforgivable which is not true according to law of God. On the other end of the extreme, there are other souls who believe that they are so good that they don’t need to go to confession.

The most important truth we have of ourselves is that we are in fact sinners loved by the Lord Jesus. To know this, all it takes is a few minutes in prayer before a crucifix, preferably in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament. As difficult as it is to go to confession, Jesus wants us to come to Him in the sacrament of penance. The first recorded words of our Blessed Lord in Sacred Scripture are believed to be from the Gospel of Mark which He says, This is the time of fulfillment. The Kingdom of God has come. Repent and believe in the Gospel.

To repent, to have sorrow for one’s sins, seems to be such a somber, negative attitude. That is far from the truth. To be sorry for one’s sins is a victory in the person and conversion of the human heart towards God. For a sinner to know and confess one’s sins before God in the sacrament of penance is more victorious for the soul than it is to win the lottery.

During this Advent, there are numerous opportunities to go to confession. We have a priest available for confessions every day after the 9:00 AM Mass Monday-Friday, Saturday’s, 12:30 PM-1:30 PM and Sunday’s 8:15 AM-8:45 AM. During the Advent Mission, the sacrament of confession will be offered on Dec 22nd and 23rd from 7:00 PM-8:00 PM. Lastly Christmas Eve, confessions will be offered from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM.

Remember if you are afraid to go, all you have to say is that you’re a friend of the Blessed Mother to any of the priests of the parish and he will help you to make a good confession.

    In Jesus and Mary,

  • DIOCESE OF ROCKVILLE CENTRE OFFICE OF THE BISHOP

    Christmas 2020

To the People of God of the Diocese of Rockville Centre:

When he was elected as a Successor of St. Peter on March 13, 2013, our Holy Father chose the name Francis. It was a weighty decision with a prophetic message. Especially now, seven years later and with the publication of his latest encyclical Fratelli Tutti from the tomb of St. Francis of Assisi on October 3, 2020, the significance of the choice is clear: Pope Francis connects his papacy to St. Francis.

Through the ministry of our Holy Father, St. Francis of Assisi is close to the Church in these times. Therefore, as we draw near to Bethlehem at the end of this difficult year, I wish to recall two points Pope Francis highlights from the life of St. Francis. One will help us celebrate the Nativity of Our Lord; the other indicates a grace for which to pray during the holy season.

First, in his 2019 Apostolic Letter Admirabile Signum: On the Meaning and Importance of the Nativity Scene, Pope Francis emphasizes St. Francis of Assisi’s foundational role in our celebration of Christmas. The Holy Father recalls the origins of the crèche and the first nativity scene inspired by the holy friar in 1223, by which the saint sought “to bring to life the memory of that babe born in Bethlehem.” Importantly, the remembrance of Christ’s birth that St. Francis desired to convey was brought alive in Greccio, a small village in Italy, not by statues but by people from the surrounding towns and countryside. Together with St. Francis, his friars, an ox and a donkey, they gathered at a cave to behold a manger full of hay over which the Eucharist was celebrated. That Christmas night, almost 800 years ago, Pope Francis reminds us, “the nativity scene was enacted and experienced by all who were present.” That night, there was “no distance between the original event and those sharing in its mystery.” (2) Encountering Christ, there was simply joy and hope.

This Christmas, in our world laden with the Crosses of COVID-19, political and economic turmoil, racism, financial hardship, and so many other societal ills and challenges – challenges that impact us on Long Island – let us remember this lesson from Greccio: Christmas is an event to be lived. It demands our participation. Like the women and men who embodied that first crèche, we must be present to Christ who is born for us. We must behold and receive Him.

  • DIOCESE OF ROCKVILLE CENTRE

    OFFICE OF THE BISHOP

Second, in Fratelli Tutti, Pope Francis shows St. Francis as an icon of Christocentric listening. With great humility and charity, the saint reverently listened to others. He was present to the various voices in his life – the voice of God, the voice of his neighbor, the voice of the poor, the voice of the sick, the voice of nature – and by truly hearing them, he was an instrument of peace, healing, and understanding. How different it can be for us! The Holy Father says well what we know: “‘Today’s world is largely a deaf world…At times, the frantic pace of the modern world prevents us from listening attentively to what another person is saying.” Aware of this fact, the Pope encourages us, in the midst of our hectic and polarized world, to be like St. Francis and “not lose our ability to listen.” (48)

This Christmas, when we approach the crib, let us ask for the grace to be attentive listeners. Let us ask for the grace to be like St. Francis, so that we may hear the voice of God and the voice of our neighbor and respond with the radical charity he exhibited.1

Like Pope Francis, may we be moved by the example of St. Francis, and may St. Francis of Assisi’s love for the Mystery of the Nativity, his ecstatic mysticism, his love for the poor, and his spirit of universal fraternity animate our celebration of Christmas this year.

May God bless you and your families this Christmas.

    Sincerely yours in Christ,

Most Reverend John O. Barres Bishop of Rockville Centre

  • First Reading IS 61:1-2A, 10-11

    Third Sunday of Advent

The spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me,

    because the LORD has anointed me;

he has sent me to bring glad tidings to the poor,

    to heal the brokenhearted,

to proclaim liberty to the captives

    and release to the prisoners,

to announce a year of favor from the LORD

and a day of vindication by our God.

I rejoice heartily in the LORD,

    in my God is the joy of my soul;

for he has clothed me with a robe of salvation

and wrapped me in a mantle of justice,

like a bridegroom adorned with a diadem,

like a bride bedecked with her jewels.

As the earth brings forth its plants,

and a garden makes its growth spring up,

so will the Lord GOD make justice and praise

spring up before all the nations.

  • Rejoice always. Pray without ceasing.

    In all circumstances give thanks,

for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus.

    Do not quench the Spirit.

    Do not despise prophetic utterances.

Test everything; retain what is good.

Refrain from every kind of evil.

May the God of peace make you perfectly holy

and may you entirely, spirit, soul, and body,

be preserved blameless for the coming of our Lord Jesus

    Christ.

The one who calls you is faithful,

and he will also accomplish it.

    Second Reading 1 THES 5:16-24

  • A man named John was sent from God.

He came for testimony, to testify to the light,

so that all might believe through him.

He was not the light, but came to testify to the

    light.

And this is the testimony of John.

When the Jews from Jerusalem sent priests

and Levites to him to ask him, “Who are you?”

He admitted and did not deny it, but admitted, “I am

not the Christ.” So they asked him,

“What are you then? Are you Elijah?” And he said, “I am

not.” “Are you the Prophet?” He answered, “No.”

So they said to him, “Who are you, so we can give

an answer to those who sent us?

What do you have to say for yourself?” He said:

“I am the voice of one crying out in the desert,

‘make straight the way of the Lord,’”

as Isaiah the prophet said.” Some Pharisees were also

sent. They asked him, “Why then do you baptize if you are not the Christ or

    Elijah or the Prophet?” John answered them, “I baptize with water;

but there is one among you whom you do not recognize, the one who is coming after

me, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to untie.”

This happened in Bethany across the Jordan,

    where John was baptizing.

  • Focus on Religious Freedom www.cffor.org

“Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety" - Benjamin Franklin

    Warning!

Religious Freedom: What's at Stake If We Lose It "Religious freedom is more than the 'freedom to worship' at a synagogue, church, or mosque. It means people shouldn't have to go against their core values and beliefs in order to conform to culture or government," wrote the Heritage Foundation, a public policy foundation. "Religious freedom protects a person's right to live, speak, and act according to their beliefs peacefully and publicly."

Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito recently spoke about his concern that religious liberty is under threat in the United States and warned that the ongoing coronavirus pandemic was acting as a "stress test" for Constitutional liberties. He fears that religious liberty is emerging as a "disfavored" and "second tier" right. "The pandemic has obviously taken a heavy human toll...But what has it meant for the rule of law?" said Justice Alito. "The pandemic has resulted in previously unimaginable restrictions on individual liberty ... We have never before seen restrictions as severe, extensive, and prolonged as those experienced for most of 2020."

Justice Alito raised concerns about the closure of churches on Easter Sunday and the closure of synagogues during the Jewish holidays of Passover and Yom Kipper. "The covid crisis has served ... to highlight disturbing trends that were already present before the virus struck." (3) He said that cases the court hears today follow a trend of eroding religious liberty.

Justice Alito was critical of states restricting worship services and especially cited the Nevada case. "Take a quick look at the Constitution. You will see the Free Exercise Clause of the First Amendment, which protects religious liberty. You will not find a craps clause or a blackjack clause or a slot machine clause. Nevada was unable to provide any plausible justification for treating casinos more favorably than houses of worship."

What's at stake? Heritage wrote, "Religious freedom prevents the cultural majority from using the power of the state to impose their beliefs on others. This protects everyone - religious and nonreligious alike - from the government becoming so powerful that it can tell people what to think and how to act. ... A government that intrudes on conscience will not hesitate to intrude on our other freedoms."

“Religious freedom is not only that of private thought or worship. It is the liberty to live, both privately and publicly, according to the ethical principles resulting from found truth.” - Pope Francis

"But a Constitution of government once changed from freedom, can never be restored. Liberty once lost is lost forever." - John Adams

Someone is needed to be present at all times during adoration. If you would like to sign up for a

scheduled time to attend please call the rectory

The Catechism of the Catholic Church tells us that, “Adoration is the first attitude of man acknowledging that he is a creature before his Creator. It exalts the greatness of the Lord who made us and the almighty power of the Savior who sets us free from evil. Adoration is homage of the spirit to the “King of Glory,” respectful silence in the presence of the “ever greater” God. Adoration of the thrice-holy and sovereign God of love blends with humility and gives assurance to our supplications.” (CCC 2628)

We can show our adoration to God in many ways, but in Eucharistic Adoration, we spend time adoring the true presence of Christ in the Eucharist.

Thank You! Thank you to all who supported our campaigns for the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and our C&B Raffle. Even with the pandemic, Bellmore donated close to $7,000 for the children of St. Jude and there was a large response to the C&B tickets distributed in self-addressed return envelopes. Finally, the C&B drawing scheduled for 12/5 has been postponed due to the pandemic and will take place in mid-January; so you are still in the game.

    Merry Christmas!

  • Background Screening Update

The Office for the Protection of Children and Young People: The Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People (The Charter) promulgated by the

Bishops of the United States in 2OO2 outlines specific practices and guidelines providing standards

of safety in parishes and dioceses throughout the United States. As directed in The Charter, the

Diocese of Rockville Centre requires all employees, clergy, and volunteers to complete three

requirements within thirty days of employment or volunteering:

    1. Attend Protecting God's Children Program (Virtus)

    2. Sign the Codes of Conduct;

    3. Complete a background screen application. The Diocese requires all those who remain in active

ministry be rescreened at 5 yr. intervals. volunteers/employees.

A Word on Background Screening of Volunteers:

The Office for the Protection of Children and Young People (OFPCYP) has streamlined the volunteer

application process enabling volunteers to complete the three safe environment requirements in one

step. lndividuals wishing to volunteer in a parish or school:

    1. Register to attend a Protecting God's Children class and create a Virtus account on the Virtus

    website: www.Virtus.org

    2. Electronically acknowledge the Diocesan Code of Conduct- provided during the Virtus registration

    process.

    3. Follow the instructions to complete the Sterling Volunteers background screening

application background offered during the Virtus registration process.

Active Volunteers: lf you are active in a parish ministry, have already attended Virtus and have been background

screened you may be at-or beyond-the 5yr. rescreening requirement. lf this is the case, you will

receive an email from Sterling Volunteers asking you to complete the background screening

application on-line. You may access the background screening application by following the prompt in

the email or logging into your Virtus account. Please be aware-this is not a scam nor has your e-mail

been hacked. The OFPCYP has been working with your parish to update the Safe Environment

records and noted it is time for you to be rescreened. You may also be prompted to electronically

resign the Code of Conduct when you log into your Virtus account.

Edit Your Virtus Account: To access your Virtus account: www.Virtus,org You will need your User name and Password. If you

need assistance, please contact Virtus: 1-888-847-8870 or [email protected]. Once in your

account, review your account information-particularly your e-mail address. lf your account requires

updating, please hit the TOOLBOX tab at the top of the screen. On the left side of your screen in the

green column click "Update My Account" You will be able to make the necessary changes-please

remember to hit the SAVE button at the bottom ofthe screen.
