SACROSANCTUM CONCILIUM INTRODUCTION

Chapter I GENERAL PRINCIPLES FOR THE RESTORATION AND PROMOTION OF THE SACRED LITURGY 1 The Nature of the Sacred Liturgy and Its Importance in the Churchrsquos Life By Baptism we are plunged into the Paschal Mystery of Christ We die with him and rise with him We receive the spirit of adoption as sons (daughters) ldquoin which we cry lsquoAbba Fatherrsquo and thus become true adorers whom the Father seeks As often as we eat the supper of the Lord we proclaim the death of the Lord until he comes (cf 1 Cor 1126) On that very day of Pentecost ldquothose who received the wordrdquo of Peter ldquowere baptizedrdquo ldquoThey continued steadfastly in the teaching of the apostles and in the communion of the breaking of bread and in prayersrdquo From that time onward the Church has never failed to celebrate the Paschal Mystery celebrating the Eucharist in which ldquothe victory and triumph of his death are again made presentrdquo To accomplish so great a work Christ is always present in his Church especially in her liturgical celebrations In the sacrifice of the Mass not only in the person of his minister ldquothe same now offering through the ministry of priests who formerly offered himself on the crossrdquo but especially under the Eucharistic species By his power he is present in the sacraments so that when a man baptizes it is really Christ himself who baptizes He is present in his Word as the Scriptures are read in the Church Lastly he is present when the Church prays and sings Christ in deed always associates the Church with himself in this great work of the liturgy where God is perfectly glorified and men are sanctified The Church is his beloved Bride who calls to her Lord and through him offers worship to the Eternal Father Rightly the liturgy is considered as an exercise of the priestly office of Jesus Christ In the liturgy our sanctification is signified by signs perceptible to the senses In the liturgy the whole public worship is performed by the Mystical Body of Jesus Christ that is by the head and his members Because every liturgical action is an action of Christ the priest and of his body which is the Church it is a sacred action surpassing all others In the earthly liturgy we take part in a foretaste of that heavenly liturgy that is celebrated in the holy city Jerusalem toward which we journey as pilgrims We sing a hymn to Lordrsquos glory with all the warriors of the heavenly army We hope for some fellowship with them We eagerly await the Savior our Lord Jesus Christ until he our life shall appear and we too will appear with him in glory (cf Phil 320 Col 34) Deacon Bill Wagner Please Note Condensed from The Sixteen Documents of Vatican II Intros by Douglas G Bushman STL Pauline Books amp Media
