From the Desk of the Pastor, Fr. Shawn Gould

Holy Communion: The Power of the Resurrection We know that Jesus is alive again, because of the many disciples who saw Him alive after He had been killed. We know, too, that Jesus’ resurrection was not an accident—some sort of freak occurrence. It happened because Jesus is incapable of staying dead. He is too powerful and too alive for it, for He is the very source of life. Jesus is Life itself. That power to live is offered to us freely. Every disciple of Jesus is given power through the Holy Spirit to share in the human and divine Life that is Jesus Christ. Where is that power? How can we receive it? The means to give us that power must be as powerful as what is being sent. And so Jesus created a means to share His divine Life with us. The first step is to have faith in Him and to be baptized in the name of the Trinity. Baptism gives our souls the power to share in Christ’s death and resurrection. There is more, though, that Christ wants to do for us. He wants to build on the grace of baptism. So He gives us Himself in a form that we can eat and drink. The resurrection is about a new human life that can share God’s Life everlastingly. For it to be a human sharing, it must involve both the body and the soul. The Lord accomplishes this by feeding us in both body and soul. Our bodies are what we eat. If we eat Jesus, then we become like Him. Our souls become as delightful to and in God as His, and our bodies become as strong as His. To know that the Eucharist simply is Jesus and not just a symbolic remembrance of Him we have to be able to trust what He says about the sacrament. It is He who told His disciples that they must chew His flesh and drink His blood. That would be absurd for anyone to say—except for Jesus—for this one, basic fact about Him. Jesus alone has sufficient power to extend His body and soul to us in such a way that it does not take anything away from Himself—and to do that in a way fit for human consumption. We know He has this power because of His miracles, but most especially because He was able to conquer death. The one who can defeat death itself surely can make it possible for us to be one with Him in body and soul by eating Him in His Most Blessed Sacrament.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS Our summer Religious Education Program Intensive is June 19 - 30, 2017 from 8:30 AM to Noon. We are currently in need of catechists and other volunteers to make this program another choice for Religious Education families at St. Bede. To register for grade 1, 3 thru 7, please call the RE office at 847-587-2301 or obtain the registration materials from the St. Bede Parish website at www.stbedechurch.com. If you are interested in some of our other programs or are in need of discounts on tuition, please call the RE office for more details.

If you have or know of any children with special needs who require help with sacraments or religious education, please call the Religious Education Office. We would like

to start a SPRED (Special Religious Education Development) program here at St. Bede to meet the needs in our area but we need trained helpers. Our Bishops have challenged us to make all programs accessible for everyone. We will have more information in upcoming bulletins about this opportunity.

A Family Perspective — Third Sunday of Easter In today’s gospel the disciples were returning home so “downcast” they did not recognize Jesus walking with them. In our homes we can be so overwhelmed with responsibilities we don’t see God with us. Today’s gospel tells us to stop and open our eyes to the blessings we are to one another. — by Bud Ozar

Men’s Scripture Group

Inviting all men to join Deacon Larry and our St. Bede “Tuesday Morning Scripture Group.” We

begin, first, at the 8:15 AM Mass and then proceed to Panera Bread® on Rollins Road in Round Lake Beach where we have a reserved area for us to gather at 9:00 AM. Share a meal and the Word of the Lord! No reservations are necessary, just come and join us. It’s a great way to begin the day!

St. Bede Youth Ministry

Calling all students grades 6th thru 12th!

Come together to learn more about our faith and enjoy fellowship with others. We meet on the 2nd & 4th Sundays of the Month at the Knights’ House (across from St. Bede School) from 5:30 – 7 PM. Please note: For the months of May thru September, youth ministry will meet only on the 4th Sundays of the month.

Rose for Mom… Roses for Life

After all the Masses on May 13th and May 14th the Mother’s Day Right to Life Rose Benefit will take place. Fresh cut, long stemmed red roses will be available for a donation of $2 per rose, 3 roses for $5, 6 roses for $10 or $20 per dozen. Expectant mothers will be presented a free rose. The rose is a symbol of the unique beauty of each human life as well as the universal symbol of the Pro-Life movement. These roses make a beautiful gift as well as a strong statement on the value of human life and motherhood. Proceeds from the benefit help Lake County Right to Life provide the funds necessary to continue efforts to defend and protect the unborn, innocent, unwanted, handicapped, and elderly who are at grave risk in our society. Efforts include: Educational newsletters, active website, video/book/pamphlet library, forums for health and end of life issues, speakers for schools and community groups, referrals to crisis pregnancy centers. Lake County Right to Life is a non-profit, volunteer organization.

The St. Bede Rosary Army is currently looking for more Rosary Makers! Our next Rosary Army meeting will be on Wednesday, May 17th at 7:00 PM in Coleman Hall (church basement). Please come and join us as we learn to make knotted twine rosaries. Once you learn, you may make them at home on your own if you prefer. The need for rosaries is great. Please consider helping us out in this prayerful and worthy ministry. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Danielle Weidner at 847-204-2412 or just come to our next meeting and see what we’re all about!

Visit the Church Library In this little gem, the author puts her finger on the secret of family spirituality. “A Parent’s Guide to Prayer” (in the Children’s section) guides families along the way to a rich, faith-filled, and ongoing prayer life. This book will help parents deepen their own understanding of prayer, provide a guide for teaching children how to pray, and offer ideas for praying together as a family. The library is located in Coleman Hall. To sign out a book, just put your name, date (month/day/year) and phone number on the card (located on the book’s inside cover) and put the card in the “Signed Out Books” holder. When returning the book, put it on the shelf marked “Returns” and we’ll replace it in the library.
