John might seem a bit melodramatic in his proclamation about how unworthy he was in comparison to Jesus. However, the urgency he speaks with and the awe he inspires in those who hear him shows that he understands Jesus’ significance. John knows that Jesus, the Son of God, will soon begin his ministry and reveal himself to those who will listen. John is trying to help others understand that Jesus is not another prophet, but the long-awaited Messiah that God has sent to save the world from sin. John reinforces this idea by claiming that he isn’t even worthy to act as a servant to Jesus. The baptism that John gave people was a sign to help them to remember their need to be cleansed from their sins, to repent and turn back to God. Water is a powerful sign. It is something we cannot live without it, but it is also dangerous and can inflict all kinds of havoc and threaten life with its potential. It is a good sign to use to help remind people to be free from the stain of sin. It is also something that was an important part of the Jewish history. We see the importance of water at creation, in the story of Noah, in God’s power over the waters as he parted the sea for Moses and the Israelites. There are also many instances of Jesus’ use of water and his control over it as a created element. John says that the baptism that Jesus gives will be done with the Holy Spirit. We see that in our own experience of Baptism as a sacrament. We are baptized in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Through this sacrament, God draws us into his very life. John could not do this, but Jesus can because he was both human and divine. He offered himself up to death for our sake so that we might rise to life along with him in his Resurrection. He bridges the gap between humanity and God. He is the way that cleanses us from our sins. Jesus did not need to be baptized. He was the son of God and was without sin. John’s baptism to help people repent from their sin and turn to God would not be necessary for Jesus. Rather, Jesus allows himself to be baptized as a sign to inaugurate his public ministry. All those gathered would have seen the heavens open, the Spirit descend, and heard God’s voice. This, more than anything John could have said about Jesus, demonstrates Jesus’ identity as the Son of God. God is revealed to the world in a concrete way through the Incarnation, in the person of Jesus. All of Jesus’ actions are the actions of the Godhead. We cannot say that one person of the Trinity works independent of the others. Through the Sacrament of Baptism, we are introduced to the Trinity. We become adopted sons and daughters of God. We encounter the love of God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. We are called to live in that love and share it with others.

On Monday, January 18th we celebrate the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. King was one of the
main leaders of the American civil rights movement. The Rectory and Academy Offices will be
closed in observance of his birthday. Emergency calls can be made to the rectory
at any time.
We Respect Life On January 18th we remember the
legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King. On January 22nd, we mark the unfortunate Supreme Court decision,
Roe vs. Wade legalizing abortion. Put those together and we remember the dignity and sanctity of all

Dear Parishioners, As we begin the new year with great hopes for a better, healthier and more peaceful year, I just want to thank those that contributed to our parish in one way or another. Your donations and contributions kept us afloat during these unsure and unprecedented times! Besides donations directly to the Parish, we are proud to say that we have reached our goal for the Bishop’s Annual Catholic Appeal. Not many parishes can say this. But with your dedication and faithfulness we did it and because of this, we will be receiving several thousand dollars back for the general use in our Parish. We have struggled this past year but together we came through! Thank You! Thank You! Thank You! Wishing you and your families a Blessed 2021 filled with new hopes, new dreams and new opportunities! You are all in my prayers – please remember me in yours!

Celebration Of Mass
♦ Masks must be worn in Church.
♦ Please maintain social distancing. (6 feet)
♦ Purell is available in the vestibule of Church.
♦ Mass is limited to 25% capacity (about 120-140 people).
♦ Families from the same household may sit next to each other.
♦ Offertory baskets will be placed in the sanctuary on ei-ther side of the altar and in the back of church by the double doors. You may put all your first and second collection en-velopes and offerings in any of the baskets.
♦ There is not to be any gathering in the vestibule before or after Mass.
♦ Please feel free to ask if you have any questions or con-cerns.
♦ The Church will be sanitized twice a week, on Friday and Monday, before and after weekend Masses. Receiving Communion
♦ The communicant should come before the minister of Communion with their mask on for the dialogue (“The Body of Christ, Amen”) and then, moving to the side, lower the mask and consume the Eucharist and replace their mask.
♦ The Precious Blood WILL NOT be distributed.
♦ Parishioners will come for Communion observing at least 6 feet of distance between them as they approach. The floor has markings on it.
♦ IT IS VERY STRONGLY RECOMMENDED THAT PARISH-IONERS RECEIVE HOLY COMMUNION IN THE HAND. This is for the safety of the parishioner receiving Holy Commun-ion and the minister of Holy Communion. If a parishioner wishes to receive on the tongue they should come forward at the end of the Communion line so they are the last ones re-ceiving so that the Communion ministers can disinfect their hands if need be after each person receives.
