Dear Parents and Carers

Next Thursday 15 August 2013 is the feast of the Assumption. For Australian Catholics, the feast of the Assumption of Mary into heaven and Christmas Day are the only remaining Holy Days of Obligation – a day on which we are obliged to attend mass.

To honour this important feast we will celebrate as a school community by attending Mass in the church at 9.00 am.

Students who arrive at school after 9.00 am will be supervised at school until the conclusion of the mass.

The feast of the Assumption celebrates the belief that at the end of her life, Mary, the mother of Christ, was taken body and soul into heaven. The origins of the feast are uncertain; however there are many accounts of early Christians celebrating Mary being taken to heaven.

An important part of our Religious Education Curriculum is our responsibility as stewards of creation. The steward was traditionally a very important person who was charged with caring for the resources on his master’s property or business.

In the Creation story we are told that God charged humans with the responsibility of caring for all living things. At St Bernard’s we all try to ensure that we take care of the grounds and do ‘our bit’ to green the environment. Last Friday Year 1 students took the opportunity to work with the Bunnings team to plant a new habitat garden outside their classrooms. Two more trees will also be planted on the top oval to add extra shade areas. Special thanks to Year 1 parents who came to assist on Friday.

This day is full of beauty and adventure, help me Lord to be fully alive to it all. During this day, may I become a more thoughtful person, a more prayerful person, a more generous and kindly person. Help me not to be turned in on myself but to be sensitive and helpful to others. Let me do nothing today that will hurt anyone, but let me help at least a little, to make life more pleasant for those I meet.

When night comes, may I look back on this day without regrets; and may nobody be unhappy because of anything I have said or done or failed to do.

Lord God, bless this day for me and all of us. Make it a day in which we grow a little more like your Son, and gentle as Mary His Mother. Amen.
