St. Bridget of Ireland

Pastor’s WordsAs we return to the season of Ordinary Time, here are a couple of things, related to this week’s readings that I invite you to keep on your radar. These little reflections should serve to remind us that, even though we are not celebrating a major liturgical feast like Christmas or Easter, Ordinary time doesn’t have to be ordinary.

First, the first reading and the Gospel reading touch upon a com-mon theme. In the reading from Isaiah, God speaks of Israel as His “delight” and His “espoused.” The covenantal relationship between God and His people is looked upon, by God Himself, as a marriage

union. He is the Divine bridegroom and Israel is His bride. He remains faithful to that union, even when Israel constantly violates that covenant through her sinfulness.

In the Gospel reading, Our Lord works His first miracle at a wedding feast, changing water into wine. Considering some of the more extraordinary things Our Lord does in the Gospel – raising Lazarus from the dead, casting out demons, calming a storm – this seems like a cheap parlor trick, and yet we are told that many people began to believe in Him. What is it about this unusual miracle that doesn’t involve a healing that draws people to Jesus? Again, there is the theme of Jesus as the Divine Bridegroom. It was the bridegroom’s family that was supposed to provide the wine for a wedding banquet. Christ provides the wine. It’s not just ordinary wine. It’s the best wine. And there is an abundance of it. Perhaps, when the crowds in Galilee first witnessed this sign, it brought to their minds another passage of Isaiah that said the Lord would provide a feast of rich food and wine. In any event, the coming of the Divine Bridegroom would be a sign of God visiting His people.

The image of Christ as the Divine Bridegroom and the Church as His bride says something about the love He has for us and the intimacy of the union which exists between the two. As with Israel of old, Christ enters a permanent, faithful, committed union with His spouse. He will not abandon her, even when we ourselves may not always be faithful to him.

With the image of the Divine Bridegroom in mind, I would like to invite you to an evening of Eucharistic adoration, music, and meditation led by Irish tenor Mark Forrest. The event will take place at our parish on March 8, 2019, at 7 p.m. That’s the first Friday in Lent. If you have never ex-perienced one of these evenings, I encourage you to check it out. Mark has a beautiful voice and a powerful personal story to share. The meditations are a great way to begin the season of Lent. The evening will be capped with a Eucharistic procession in the church. What a great way to rejoice in the presence of the Divine Bridegroom, who has pledged to be with us every day until the end of time.

As an aside, Mark is one of the leaders of the upcoming trip to Ireland. This would be great oppor-tunity to meet him and check him out. We’ll be tag-teaming with St. Ambrose Parish in Annandale. The pastor of that parish, Father Andrew Fisher, is a good friend of mine, and a wonderful priest. With company like Father Fisher and Mark Forrest, the trip should be a fun, faith-filled journey.

The next thing to keep on your radar is connected with the second reading. Paul reminds us that the body of Christ is made up of many members, all playing a different part to build up that body. Things at St. Bridget Parish don’t just happen magically. The collection does not gather itself, the Word of God does not proclaim itself, the plants inside and outside the church do not water them-selves. They need people to make it all happen. In the next month or so, I will be putting out a call for people to help with these different ministries. We have many volunteers who work hard, but we can always use more. I hope you will prayerfully consider joining one these groups. It is a great way to meet fellow parishioners, and it is a great way to help build up our parish family.

In Our Lord, Father Paul Grankauskas

OYM Youth Discussion and Mass Monday, January 21 at 6PM Open to Everyone! Why does the Mass contain a “Homily” and not a “Sermon?” Why does the priest break off a little piece of the consecrated host and drop it into the cup? A visiting friend once asked me why we do “church aerobics” during Mass referring to the many changes in posture during Mass. Is there meaning behind it? How many movie references can Father Paul make while explaining the Mass? If you share these questions or have others, please join us for an enlightening evening to help us appre-ciate the timeless beauty and ancient symbolism of the Mass. We need song leaders/musicians to help. Contact the OYM for further information.

Knights of Columbus will have a Feast of St. Bridget Spaghetti Dinner that includes spaghetti, meatballs, marinara sauce, salad, and garlic bread with cookies and ice cream for desert on Friday Feb. 1 from 6-8 pm. Eucharistic Adoration for First Friday from 1-6 pm that evening.

January 20, 2019 Divine Mercy Said: “My daughter, do not tire of proclaiming My mercy. In this way you will refresh this Heart of Mine, which burns with a flame of pity for sinners. Tell My priests that hardened sinners will repent on hearing their words when they speak about My unfathom-able mercy, about the compassion I have for them in My Heart. To priests who proclaim and extol My mercy, I will give wondrous power; I will anoint their words and touch the hearts of those to whom they will speak. (St. Faustina Diary 1521) Backpack Ministry Donations of tuna or Chef Boyardee are greatly appreciated. We are helping to pack backpacks of food for 38 children in CCPS. Saint of the Week: St. Marianne Cope:

Maria Anna Barbara Koob was born January 23, 1838 in Heppenheim, in

Germany. Just a year after her birth, her family emigrated to the United States

(changing their surname to Cope), settling in Utica, New York. Maria attended a parish school until she reached the eighth grade. By that

time, her father had become an invalid and she went to work in a factory to support the family. In 1862, she left the factory to pursue a religious life.

She became a novitiate of the Sisters of the Third Order Regular of Saint Francis based in Syracuse, New York. She took

the name Marianne when she completed her formation. By 1883,

Cope had become the Superior General of her congregation. Mother Marianne,

as she was then known, left Syracuse with six sisters to attend to the leprosy sufferers in Honolulu. In 1888, Moth-er Marianne and two sisters went to

Molokai to open a home for “unprotected women and girls” there.

On Molokai she took charge of the home that Saint Damien de Veuster had established for men and boys. Mother Marianne changed life on

Molokai by introducing cleanliness, pride, and fun to the colony. Bright scarves and pretty dresses for the

women were part of her approach. Mother Marianne died on August 9, 1918.

Marianne’s feast day is January 23rd.

There will be no RE class this weekend.

Confirmation classes will begin oral testing on their prayers on

February 3rd.

Spiritual Thought“The biggest disease today is not

leprosy or tuberculosis, but rather the feeling of being unwanted.”
