Dear Parents of St Carlo Borromeo community,

Welcome to Week Six of Term 4, we are now over the half way mark of the term and the students are busily completing assessments for the end of Semester 2. The teachers are planning the final few weeks of the curriculum and ensuring all the topics have been covered. They will also be working on the end of year reports. For many children, the final weeks of the year is where they make their greatest gains in their learning.

A couple of weeks ago we held our Prep 2019 information evening, this occasion gave the parents some ideas on how to prepare their children for a smooth transition into school. It was lovely to see so many familiar faces, this cohort has many siblings who are currently at St Carlo’s, a few ex-students of our school who are now parents and a great group of new excited parents who have their first child beginning school. Mrs Pina Distefano and myself have been conducting kinder visits so that the children have a familiar face when their orientation days begin this week on Wednesday 14th, followed by two more on; 21st and 28th November.

On All Saints Day we celebrated St Carlo’s feast day with a beautiful whole school mass. We reflected on the lives of the saints who mean the most to us, including St Carlo Borromeo. On this special day, every

year we have nominations for children in our school who have demonstrated the values of St Carlo’s (Devotion to faith, Humility, Helping others) in everyday life and one particular child is awarded the St Carlo’s medal. Red came second, Green came third and Gold came fourth.

After the first rotation of our sports, we gathered in the junior courtyard in front of the flag pole to commemorate Remembrance Day 2018. This year’s ceremony marked 100 years since World War 1 ended. Our reflection was beautifully led by our Year 6 Leaders under the guidance of Mr Peter Marinucci. As a school we were silent, we prayed, listened to readings and sang our national anthem with pride. We will never forget how our service men and women lost their lives for our freedom. “Lest we forget”.

Father Dishan attended our last assembly with a beautiful surprise, he presented the Parents and Friends with a cheque for $1,400 as a %10 profit from the Parish Fete. We thank all our volunteers who helped on the day and all the wonderful mystery jar donations made by all the families. The money raised by Parents and Friends goes back into the school to purchase resources or create new playground areas. Just recently, the school provided each class a brand new top of the range iPad, so that our Seesaw images were crystal clear. Thank you for your continued support.

Finally, I wish everyone a lovely weekend, hopefully we can enjoy special moments with our family and friends.

Kind regards,

Nella Fimiani

Religion THE SACRAMENT OF

CONFIRMATION St Patrick’s Cathedral 28th October

2018

There is always something rather distinctive

about the Sacrament of Confirmation cere-

mony at St Patrick’s Cathedral. The mag-

nificence of the historical building, the

sense of spirituality that the Cathedral

evokes and the traditional atmosphere of

incense, candles and the presence of the

Monsignor, The Vicar General, ensures all

who are involved, will remember the cere-

mony for many years.

On Sunday 28th October, 70 candidates from Year 6 received the final Sacrament of Initiation from Reverend Monsignor Greg Bennet, Vicar General. The students read beautifully and responded with enthusiasm which was noted not only by the staff in at-tendance, parents and the congregation but was also pointed out by the Vicar General and Father Dishan.

To gather and witness the children renew

their baptismal promises and be sealed with

the gifts of the Holy Spirit, as well as partici-

pate in such an occasion that reflected and

symbolised our faith journey. As always,

our children reflectively responded to the

significance of Sunday’s occasion, with the

support of their sponsors, friends and fami-

lies, the St Carlo Borromeo school commu-

nity, and the faith community of the church.

We were very appreciative of all who con-tributed to the day; - - the staff of St Carlo’s for their willingness to assist with booklet distribution, collectors and special minsters, - the Year Six staff; Aurora Saracino, Jessi-ca Barcellona, Stephanie Ivancic, & Peter Marinucci for their supportive presence and encouragement. The students and their parents should be extremely proud of the manner in which the children were prepared, the level of under-

standing and their reverence in the Cathe-dral. The students are a credit to the school, the teachers, parents and the wider parish community. We were indebted to the Vicar General Greg Bennet, Father Dishan and the staff of the Cathedral for “bringing to life” the im-portance of the Sacrament of Confirmation.

SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION

REFLECTION

All powerful God,

Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,

by water and the Holy Spirit, you freed your

sons and daughters from sin

and gave them full life.

Send your Holy Spirit upon them to be their

helper and guide.

Give them the spirit of wisdom and under-

standing, the spirit of right judgement and

courage, the spirit of knowledge and rever-

ence. Fill them with the spirit of wonder

and awe in your presence.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

the Australian and British governments

changed the name to Remembrance

Day. Armistice Day was no longer an ap-

propriate title for a day which would com-

memorate all war dead.

The Flanders poppy has long been a part

of Remembrance Day, the ritual that

marks the Armistice of 11 November

1918. During the First World War, red

poppies were among the first plants to

spring up in the devastated battlefields of

northern France and Belgium. In soldiers'

folklore, the vivid red of the poppy came

from the blood of their comrades soaking

the ground; the sacrifice of shed blood.

As our school children adorned them-

selves with a red poppy, it was our spe-

cial way of remembering to always keep

faith.

Remembrance Day has a special signifi-cance in 2018. Sunday, 11 November 2018 marks the 100th anniversary of the Armistice which ended the First World War (1914–18). One hundred years ago on 11 November 1918, four bloody years of brutal conflict came to an end. Almost 62,000 Australians died fighting for our freedom and in service of our nation.

On 11 November 1918, the guns of the Western Front fell silent after four years of continuous warfare. With their armies retreating and close to collapse, German leaders signed an Armistice, bringing to an end the First World War. From the summer of 1918, the five divisions of the Australian Corps had been at the fore-front of the allied advance to victory. In the four years of the war more than 330,000 Australians had served over-seas, and more than 60,000 of them had died.

To commemorate the centenary of the Armistice that ended the First World War. Remembrance Day in Australia is dedi-cated to Australians who died as a result of war, particularly from World War I on-wards.

REMEMBERANCE DAY

Heavenly Father,

On this Remembrance Day, we pray for

those who courageously laid down their

lives for the cause of freedom. May the

example of their sacrifice inspire in us the

selfless love of your son, our Lord Jesus

Christ. Bless the families of our fallen

troops, and fill their homes and their lives

with your strength and peace. We pray

through Christ our Lord

Amen

Why is this day special to Australians?

At 11 a.m. on 11 November 1918 an ee-

rie silence fell over the battlefields of Eu-

rope. In November the Germans called

for an armistice (suspension of fighting) in

order to secure a peace settlement. They

accepted allied terms that amounted to

unconditional surrender.

The 11th hour of the 11th day of the

11th month attained a special signifi-

cance in the post-war years. The moment

when hostilities ceased on the Western

Front became universally associated with

the remembrance of those who had died

in the war. This First World War had

brought about the deployment of over 70

million people and left between 9 and 13

million dead, perhaps as many as one-

third of them with no known grave. The

allied nations chose this day and time for

the commemoration of their war dead.

After the end of the Second World War,

Education Leader

applications that aren’t necessarily so-cial networks will often have social as-pects, such as a user chatroom or the ability to create an online profile.

2. Set rules for your child’s social media use Banning your child from using social media is rarely effective, as they are likely to have access to a personal com-puter, tablet, smartphone or gaming console, as well as the devices they use at school or at friends’ houses. It can also be very difficult to control their use of these devices or keep up to date with new social media sites or mobile appli-cations. Your best bet is reach an agreement with your child about their social media use — you might pre-approve the sites they can join, encour-age open conversation about their use or things they see online, or agree that they hand over their phone overnight.

3. Teach your child about sharing in-formation responsibly It’s important that your child under-stands how to share information respon-

Social Media Safety Tips for Parents

Technology is, and will continue to be, a part

of our lives, but we need to be aware of what

the children are doing online. It is important

that we are continually communicating with

our children about the importance of the pri-

vacy settings on the various social media

platforms, the importance of not sharing any

personal information, the need for parents to

know all passwords being used by the chil-

dren and, most importantly, to let the children

know that, if there is something that makes

them feel uncomfortable, they need to talk to

you about it and that, as parents, you re-

spond immediately.

A reminder also that many of the social media

platforms have an age restriction of 13 so our

children should not really be using them. You

are quite within your rights to say No.

Although social media certainly has many benefits, it is natural to be concerned that your child may run into trouble or have a neg-ative experience online. With most Australian children accessing social networks, it helps to understand the facts about these sites and applications and know how to keep your child safe. 1. Understand the applications and social media sites your child is using You might already have an idea of the social networks and applications your child is using, but if you don’t, a quick search online or scroll through the Apple App Store or Android’s Google Play will give you an indication of popular social networks. Most people would be familiar with Facebook and Twitter, but there are also apps such Instagram and Snapchat where users can share photos and engage in quick-fire conversations. If you’re not a social media user yourself, you can also do some reading to gauge which social net-works are appropriate to your child’s age and what type of functionality is available. Also bear in mind that some websites and mobile

sibly. They should refrain from publishing personal information, such as their date of birth, home address, phone number or the school they attend. Social media sites often prompt users to fill in these personal details, and many (teenagers in particular) don’t realise that their profiles may be viewed by others. Most social media sites give users the opportunity to adjust their privacy settings, usually al-lowing parts of their profile (or even their full profile) to remain hidden from users who are not a connection. And while it’s likely that you taught your child about ‘stranger danger’ when they were young-er, it’s important to reinforce this mes-sage in their teens. Your child should know that although they might ‘meet’ people online, they should never divulge personal information or arrange a meet-ing with a new online friend without su-pervision.

4. Ensure your child understands the implications of their online behav-iours Your child may not be aware of the impli-cations of what they do or say online. A general rule of thumb is that if they wouldn’t say something in front of you, their teachers or to a friend’s face, it’s best not to say it online. Your child should also understand that content they post can be saved, shared by friends or viewed by social media users outside of their network. This applies to status up-dates, comments and photos — even if they are quickly deleted. There are also some social networks that allow users to post anonymous messages or ask ques-tions they would like another user to an-swer. These sites can be very dangerous territory for teens and are often used as a vehicle for cyberbullying.

5. Help your child to deal with cyber-bullying Cyberbullying can include text messag-es, emails, messages and comments on social networks, as well as purpose-ly excluding others online. If your child is a victim of cyberbullying, they should talk to someone they trust about what they have experienced, whether this is you, an older sibling, their teacher or the school counsellor. It is also im-portant to record evidence of cyberbul-lying — by printing or saving an email, keeping mobile phone conversations or ‘screen capturing’ an online post. If cyberbullying occurs on social media, your child will usually be able to report the incident to the social network pro-vider and block the bully from contact-ing them.

P A G E 9 Environment Club OUTDOOR CLASSROOM DAY

This week St Carlo Borromeo took part in

Outdoor Classroom Day. Outdoor Class-

room Day is a global campaign to celebrate

and inspire outdoor learning and play. We

were one of thousands of schools around

Australia taking part.

During the week all classes took their learn-

ing outdoors. Outdoor learning helps to im-

prove our health and helps our learning. It

helps to teach us critical life skills such as

resilience, teamwork and creativity whilst

getting us outdoors in the fresh air and na-

ture.

So during the week, at different times of the

day you may have seen lots of activity out-

side. It wasn’t recess or lunchtime but ra-

ther our students and teachers taking learn-

ing outdoors into what we now think of as

an extension of our classroom.

Let’s make more days Outdoor Classroom

Day and have fun as we learn.

Now, as learning occurs everyone, at

school and home, take a look at some activ-

ities you may wish to try at home with your

children. We never stop learning and op-

portunities for learning exist everywhere.

Enjoy

Mathematics Learning about MASS is fun!

To learn about mass the Year 1 students ini-tially used their bodies as scales to heft class-room items. They realised that the items that felt the heaviest would be shown by their arm being lower and the items that were the light-est would be shown by raising their arm high-er. This is just like what happens when we use scales. They then used scales to check the mass of items and wrote about their findings. All the students seemed to have great fun learning about mass.

This is an enjoyable activity students can do at home. They would predict first which item they think will be the heaviest out of two items. Next they use their arms as scales to check, then lastly if you have scales at home they can check by weighing the mass of the items on the scales.
