Page 3: St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church · God with the gifts of discernment of spirits, prophecy, healing, bilocation and more. He is a powerful intercessor for us before Almighty God

Padre Pio is the only priest in Catholic history

to bear the Stigmata, the five wounds of Jesus

Christ crucified. Padre Pio was also blessed by

God with the gifts of discernment of spirits,

prophecy, healing, bilocation and more. He is a

powerful intercessor for us before Almighty God.

He was born Francesco Forgione in the Italian village of Pietrelcina on May

25, 1887. His parents, Giuseppa and Grazio Forgione, were peasant farm-

ers. At the age of 15 he entered the novitiate of the Capuchin Franciscan

Friars and was ordained a priest in 1910. On September 7, 1910, while at

prayer in Piana Romana, where his family’s farmhouse was located, he

received the invisible Stigmata. On September 20, 1918, while praying in

the Friary Chapel in San Giovanni Rotondo, Padre Pio received the visible

Stigmata, the five wounds of Christ: a wound on his left side, and bleeding

wounds in his hands and feet, which he bore for fifty years.

Among Padre Pio’s most important works is a hospital, La Casa Sollievo

della Sofferenza, the Home for the Relief of Suffering, dedicated in 1956.

This was Padre Pio’s dream come true. It is situated on the mountain in San

Giovanni Rotondo, next to Our Lady of Grace Church and Friary.

St. Matthew -

Little is known about St. Matthew, except that he was the son of Alpheus, and he was likely born in Galilee. He worked as a tax collector, which was a hated profession during the time of Christ.

According to the Gospel, Matthew was working at a collection booth in Capernaum when Christ came to him and asked, "Follow me." With this simple call, Matthew became a disciple of Christ.

From Matthew we know of the many doings of Christ and the message Christ spread of salva-tion for all people who come to God through Him. The Gospel account of Matthew tells the

same story as that found in the other three Gospels, so scholars are certain of its authenticity. His book is the first of the four Gospels in the New Testament.

Many years following the death of Christ, around 41 and 50 AD, Matthew wrote his gospel account. He wrote the book in Aramaic in the hope that his account would convince his fellow people that Jesus was the Messiah and that His kingdom had been fulfilled in a spiritual way. It was an important message at a time when almost everyone was expecting the return of a militant messiah brandishing a sword.

It is thought he departed for other lands to escape persecution sometime after 42 AD. According to various legends he fled to Parthia and Persia, or Ethiopia. Nothing is recorded of Matthew's passing. We do not know how he died, if his death was natural or if he was martyred.

Saint Matthew is often depicted with one of the four living creatures of Revelation 4:7, which reads, "The first living crea-ture was like a lion, the second like a bull, the third living creature had a human face, and the fourth living creature was like a flying eagle."

Prayer to Our Lady of Guadalupe Archbishop Jose H. Gomez’s prayer: for the

Protection from Coronavirus Holy Virgin of Guadalupe, Queen of the Angels and Mother of the Americas. We fly to you today as your beloved children. We ask you to intercede for us with your Son, as you did at the wedding in Cana. Pray for us, loving Mother, and gain for our nation and world, and for all our families and loved ones, the protection of your holy angels, that we may be spared the worst of this illness. For those already afflicted, we ask you to obtain the grace of healing and deliverance. Hear the cries of those who are vulnerable and fearful, wipe away their tears and help them to trust. In this time of trial and testing, teach all of us in the Church to love one another and to be patient and kind. Help us to bring the peace of Jesus to our land and to our hearts. We come to you with confidence, knowing that you truly are our compassionate mother, health of the sick and cause of our joy. Shelter us under the mantle of your pro-tection, keep us in the embrace of your arms, help us always to know the love of your Son, Jesus. Amen.
