Gifts made to the Catholic Charities Appeal will provide support needed to tens of thousands of people through countless organizations, programs and ministries throughout the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. Already our St. Cornelius Church parishioners have contributed over $80,587 (53%) towards our goal of $150,805. We hope you took home an envelope from Mass a few weeks ago and will consider making a contribution. St. Cornelius has always been a strong supporter of this ap-peal We know this year we can be equally supportive.

Thank you!

Take care of brothers and sisters who are weaker...the elderly, the sick, the hungry, the homeless and strangers,

because we will be judged on this. (Pope Francis)

Announcement from Msgr. Parlante

My Dear St Cornelius Family, God is Good! How many times have we said that God is good, indeed very good to us. On May 15 I celebrated my 35th anniversary of Ordination to the Priesthood. Each and every day for thir-ty-five years I have experience His goodness to me. For the past 13 years I have experienced His love and care for me as your pastor. You have shown me in so many ways of the goodness of God. Thank you for sharing your faith and love of God with me. During these past 13 years I have celebrated with you, laughed with you and cried with you. What a great honor it has been to be with you. For the past few years my health has not totally recovered from my near death illness. In March I began a medical leave to address my health issues. I asked the Archbishop to accept my resignation as pastor so that I can totally devote my time to becoming well. It would not be in the best inter-est of the parish or myself to continue on as pastor. Know that I will cherish my time with you and you will always be part of me. Please pray for me and I will for you, may Saint Cornelius Parish always be a welcoming place to discover Jesus. Until we meet again, may God hold you in His love. God is Good! All the time!!!! Msgr. Greg Parlante While Monsignor Parlante is on sick leave he will be using the following address.

Let us pray for our Men and Women serving in the Armed Forces. Especially for:

You have heard the old adage ~ “The Church never gets a

maintain our fiscal responsibilities. So, if you are away on a Sunday, ENJOY;

Helping Hands and Hearts

This ministry offers temporary help (meals, home visits, light cleaning, laundry, errands) to individu-als and families in need! If you are aware of someone in need or would like to be a volunteer helper, please contact Marilyn Gustin at 610-347-0276.

Endowment Appeal Update

Our Endowment Fund, which will ensure that future generations of parishioners can continue to build up the Body of Christ, has received a total of $78,070. A gift of $25,

$250 or $2,500, or whatever sacrificial gift you can make will go a long way to help replace the funds spent to refurbish the Church building and to begin the creation of our Endowment. St. Cornelius is our home, a place to discover Jesus, who is our Cornerstone, who gives a future full of hope. As stated in the Annual Report, this fund will be established solely for the benefit of the Parish and remain so for the life of the fund. If you have-n’t already done so, your contribution will be great-ly appreciated. As a reminder, gifts of stock are al-so accepted. Please call Dan Dougherty in the Par-ish Life Center at 610-459-2502 if you have any questions or need assistance. Thank you!

In our charity, let us pray for the repose of the soul of

WEDDING MINISTRY We are looking for volunteers to help with wedding rehearsals and/or weddings. Re-hearsals are held on Thursday evenings at 6pm and weddings are on Saturdays and

sometimes on Friday evening. As a growing parish, we are celebrating more and more weddings and are in need of some help. We would also like to have a group of adults who would per-form the ministry of altar server just like we do for funerals. Training will be provided and a schedule set up for coverage of rehearsals and weddings. Please call the Parish Life Center to volunteer at 610-459-2502.

Page Eight May 28, 2017

FUNERAL MINISTRY Funeral Ministry is a parish organization that provides vol-unteers to assist with the celebration of the funeral liturgy. Have you ever wanted to be an altar server? This could be your opportunity. Funerals are generally celebrated at 10 am; so if you have the occasional morning available, we could use your help. Training will be provided! Please call the Parish Life Center at 610-459-2502 to volunteer.

Prayer Shawl Ministry… Come, Join US! As we begin our 11th Year!! Starting in May we will meet on the 1st and 3rd Monday of the month from 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm in the Parish Life Cen-ter. During the Summer months (July, August and Sep-tember) we will meet once a month on the 3rd Monday. We will return to twice a month in October. If you are unable to attend our meetings and would like to participate as so many others do, we are always in need of New Yarn, please drop off any new yarn or if you have any completed items, etc. to the Parish Life Center. It would be greatly appreciated. Besides shawls and blankets, our ministry makes Christen-ing blankets for every child Baptized at St Cornelius. We also make prayer squares which we provide to the USO for our Military. Shawls and blankets are available in the Bethany Room. If you have any questions, please contact Mary Jo Shell, 610-361-8198 or Joanne Fonash, 610-358-1220

The Ministry of Consolation A St. Cornelius community response to the needs of people grieving the death of a significant person/persons in their lives, the ministry honors the words and

example of the Lord Jesus: "Blessed are they who mourn; they shall be consoled" (Matthew 5:4). A team of three trained St. Cornelius church members are the facilitators for the consolation ministry. The next session will be June 17, 2017. Open Con-solation Sessions will be held in the Bethany Room of the Church the third Saturday of the month from 3:30 to 5:00pm.

ON CARE FOR OUR COMMON HOME

THIS FERTILE EARTH… For How Long?

Saints and Popes have long warned that: the destruction that we do to nature we do to ourselves, as we are inherently part of nature – NOT separate from it! From St. Hildegard of Bingen, St. Francis of Assisi to Pope Benedict XVI, and now Pope Francis have pleaded with us to open our eyes and hearts to see – really see – the interconnectedness of ourselves and nature: That which we do to the soul of Earth we do to the soul of Man. This idea is brought out in the “Parable of the Sower”: only seed sown on “fertile, rich soil” multiplies and produces grain many times the original amount of seed sown. We are taught the seed represents the Word of God. Does the soil represent the soul of Man, of each of us? As we destroy the fertility of our soils, are we destroying the capacity of our souls to receive the word of God and multiply “the fruitfulness of the earth for all generations”? The UN Food & Agriculture Organization states: “Soil, in which nearly all our food grows, is a living resource that takes years to form… Each year 75 billion tons of fertile soil are lost to erosion… Poor land management, urbaniza-tion, and climate change are making soils more prone to erosion… Soil is now eroding up to 20 times faster than it’s being developed! Further, Scientific America and University of Texas found significant declines in the nutrient content of food as the fertility of the soil declines. One study found that “you would have to eat eight oranges today to derive the same amount of Vitamin A as our grandparents received”! What can we do to reverse these trends? First, a CHANGE OF HEART is required, so that we “see” with the eyes of our heart, not just our sensory view. And:

WEDNESDAY, MAY 17

During the Month of May, our school stu-dents recite one decade of the rosary each day and also many of the grades, take the opportunity to have their students crown the Blessed Mother statue in the their class-rooms. The pictures below are from our PK4 class-

rooms; they can only make one smile!

In early May, our PK students visited the Media Thea-ter to see the show, Madagascar. As part of the experi-ence many of our students and parents were called up to the stage to participate in some acting experiences. Great Job, PK and PK parents; Hollywood awaits!

CELEBRATION OF THE SACRED MYSTERIES

SACRAMENTS Sacrament of Penance - Saturday at 4:00 pm or anytime by appointment

Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick - Please notify the Parish Life Center when a relative is sick or hospitalized. The sacraments of Penance, Eucharist and Anointing of the Sick are a joy and privilege to administer. If you know you are going to the hospital for surgery, please notify Fr. Jim and he will be glad to Anoint you after Mass.

Sacrament of Baptism - Congratulations! In co-operation with God’s creative love, you have given your child breath and now you wish to give them Re-al Life through the sacrament of Baptism. You will be your child’s first teacher in the ways of the Faith. During your pregnancy, to help you prepare for this responsibility, we ask you to stop in the Parish Life Center and receive the booklet “You gave them breath, Now give them life.” This booklet will pro-vide information needed to begin your preparation for the celebration of Baptism. Please contact the Parish Life Center at (610) 459-2502 for further information.

Sacrament of Marriage - The love between a husband and wife images for us the love of Christ and his church. What a powerful and awesome thing is the call to the sacrament of Marriage! To assist cou-ples to enter this sacrament, the Archdiocese of Phila-delphia requires at least six months of formation prior to the reception of the sacrament. Those who wish to receive the Sacrament - please call the Parish Life Center to make an appointment to see Fr. Jim to begin your sacramental preparation. Congratulations for responding to God’s call to Love.

Sacrament of Holy Orders - Jesus said that we are to pray to the Lord of the harvest, that workers will be sent at harvest time. The best way to promote vocations to the diaconate and priesthood is to invite those men whom you would consider would make a good priest or deacon. If you feel the Lord might be asking you to be a priest or deacon, Fr. Jim or one of the Deacons will always be available to answer your questions and give direction.
