Science Fair 2019 The 2019 St Cyril Science Fair took place on February 25 in the gym. Over 40 projects were presented of which 8 were selected to move on to the city Science Fair at the University of Toronto in Scarborough. Participating students were from SK to Grade 7/8. Projects presented covered a wide range of disciplines including chemistry, physics, biology, molecular biology, social studies, systems and classification. Projects were evaluated by a group of teachers from St Cyril. Evaluation rubrics included (1) the pertinence of the project, (2) the quality of the poster, and (3) the presentation of the findings by the students. Each participant received a “Certificate of Participation” and was congratulated on their efforts. Parents, teachers, and students who visited the booths were impressed by the work done by the budding scientists. Due to the high quality of most of the projects, it was not easy for the judges to decide on the winners but they eventually selected 8 candidates who will represent St. Cyril at the Toronto Science Fair on April 6, 2019 in Scarborough. Congratulations and Good Luck! Roger Fogain

Career Day On the morning of Tuesday April 2, 2019 St. Cyril will be hosting its inaugural Career Day for students in Grades 4 – 8. The seven presenters, all St. Cyril alumni, will share the journey that has led them to their successful careers. We are fortunate to a wonderful variety of professional people from different walks of life. They include a manager for Herjavec Group, a restaurant owner, a Public & Media relations supervisor and a Senior Regional Manager of Financial Planning for TD Canada Trust, a Training & Operations Specialist from St. Louis Franchise, a private chef, and a FSL Special Assignment Teacher. We look forward to welcoming these young alumni into our school. Many thanks to Ms. Moore for coordinating this wonderful event!

Swim to Survive Our Gr. 4 classes will be taking part in the “Swim to Survive” program offered by the City of Toronto at the Douglas Snow Aquatic Centre on the following dates: April 1, 8 and 15.

Great castles! In the Gr. 4 class, we created castles during our medieval times unit in social studies. The class worked in partners of two and together we made castles and learned lots of important facts. To make our castles, we used materials like styrofoam, paint, cardboard, paper, stones and clay, and even toy knights as an addition to our castles. The grade 4 class had so much fun doing this project. On the due date, everyone brought in their castles and other materials. The kindergarten class came to see our projects and we showed and told them about our castles. Next step: the field trip to Medieval Times! Jayden and Sofia

… Well done!

It's night, It's day in Kindergarten! Through light and darkness activities, the kindergarten class explored the wonders of day and night as a gift of God. We turned off the lights and projected a flashlight on the classroom door. The students had fun moving with their shadows, enjoying God's gift. The children colored and cut on construction paper outside daytime and nighttime scenes, including a moon, stars and the sun. A

Anaphylaxis Anaphylaxis is a rapid, severe, potentially life threatening allergic reaction, caused by exposure to a “trigger” (allergen). We have a number of students and some staff members who have serious allergies, in particular to nuts or nut products. We ask for your cooperation in several ways:

Alert school staff immediately if your child has a serious allergy.

Please do not send nuts or nut products to school. For the safety of all students, please do not send food items as birthday treats. Families have kindly brought non-food treats to celebrate their children’s birthdays and these are much appreciated by their classmates. This is both safe for all students and inclusive!

Classes that have class members or staff members who are anaphylactic will be given additional information to help ensure the safety of those who are susceptible to anaphylactic reactions.

Parents/guardians of children who require an Epi– Pen must provide completed

medical forms from their doctor and consent forms for the administration of the Epi-pen. These forms are available in the office

Please note that two Epi –pens are required. One is to be carried by the student at all times in a fanny pack and one is to be kept in the school office.

Budget Consultation

All parents, staff, students and stakeholders are

encouraged to participate in the consultation regarding the

2019-2020 budget. By identifying your priorities for

consideration, the Trustees of the Board will be better

able to make decisions that reflect the concerns and

interests of TCDSB stakeholders. The budget website will

be available as of Wednesday, April 3rd. This website will

include both video and printed materials outlining the

budget, and the budget process, as well as a breakdown of

the various ways that everyone can participate in the

consultation process. An online survey will also be

available through to May 3rd to ensure that everyone has

an opportunity to share their views.

Sign Up for School Messenger

One of our greatest priorities is ensuring that all our

students arrive safely to school each and every day. To

enhance our existing absence-checking procedure TCDSB

has introduced a new, more efficient student absence

reporting system called SafeArrival. This new system

will reduce the time it takes to verify student attendance,

making it easy for you to report your child’s absence and

easy for staff to respond to unreported student absences.

With SafeArrival, you are asked to report your child’s

absence in advance using any of these 3 convenient

methods:

1. Using your mobile device, download and install

Page 6: St. Cyril Catholic School News€¦ · Each participant received a “Certificate of Participation” and was congratulated on their efforts. Parents, teachers, and students who visited

the SchoolMessenger app from the Apple App

Store or the Google Play Store (or from the links

at https://go.schoolmessenger.com). The first

time you use the app, select Sign Up to create

your account. Select Attendance then Report an

Absence.

2. Use the SafeArrival website,

https://go.schoolmessenger.com. The first time

you use the website, select Sign Up to create

your account. Select Attendance then Report an

Absence.

3. Call the toll-free number 1 (833) 251-3286 to

report an absence using the automated phone

system.

These options are available 24 hours/day, 7 days a week.

Future absences can be reported at any time up to a

maximum of 10 consecutive days. It is important to note

that when setting up your account, you must register using

the email address and phone number associated with your

child’s Trillium account. In addition, schools will use the

SchoolMessenger Communicate automated notification

system to contact parents whose child is absent when the

absence was not reported in advance. The automated

notification system will attempt to contact parents at

multiple contact points until a reason is submitted for the

absence. If our system is unable to reach the designated

contacts, office staff will follow up.

Breakthrough Junior Challenge

Explain a big scientific idea in fundamental

physics, life sciences or mathematics with a short

video. The challenge opens on May 1st. To take

part in the Breakthrough Junior Challenge, create

a short video (3 minutes max) to explain a big

idea in one of these fields: Physics, Mathematics,

Life Sciences. Your film can take any form you

like: animation, talking head, documentary,

dramatic reconstruction, whatever. It’s worth

keeping in mind that video is a dynamic visual

medium – using diagrams, simulations, physical
