Dear St Dominic’s Family, You are hereby invited to attend the 2009 High School Prize Giving on Friday evening 16 October 2009 at 17:30 in the Kingdom Ministries Hall. The event will not be very long and will contain highlights from our music tour as well as The King and I production. Speeches are kept short and to the minimum. For the first time in St Dom’s history academic staff will be dressed in full academic dress. As this is a formal function I ask that all attending be dressed in a minimum dress code of smart casual. All pupils of the school must wear full school uniform (tie and blazer). Please do not bring any children under the age of three to the Prize Giving. The Prize Giving is the “premier event” of the year for the High School and I implore parents to attend this function. Parents must not underestimate how important it is for their children to have Mom and Dad present when their efforts are being acknowledged and awarded. PLEASE ATTEND! We are proud of our school and proud of the many exceptional successes of our children! I am looking forward to welcoming you! Primary School News

The St Dominic’s College Primary School cricket boys did very well in the recent Trial Week held during the school holidays. Sean Whitehead (left) was selected for the Free State U/13 A cricket team. Wesley Benson (right) was selected for the Free State U/13 B cricket team. These boys will be going on two tours during this term, and during the December holidays will go to the Cape for a week. Well done boys!

Pictured in action is talented left arm spinner Sean Whitehead. Still only 12, Sean is captain of the u/13A team. He was selected for both the Goldfields and Free State u/13 A teams, primarily as a bowler. He is also very handy with the bat. His score of 107 not out in a recent league match bears testament to this.

Well done to the Primary School B Chess Team who were selected to play in the finals at Goudveld High School on the 11th of September 2009. Front: Owen Buthelezi (reserve), Thabo Lisene, Leandro dos Santos and Qhayiya Mgumane Back: Fezekile Ngesi, Connor Dilworth and Armando Morais

Project Week The Primary School children enjoyed a most interesting and beneficial project week. The four days were used to do activities and exercises which would enrich the body, mind and soul. Teacher’s organised guest speakers from the police and drug squad to address the pupils; some classes visited the gym, while others went on class outings. The school even built a gym circuit for the pupils to participate in. The Grade 5’s made posters for anti-bullying and the Grade 4’s attended the Regal’s farm and learnt about taxidermy. Pupils also partook in a retreat day which acted as food for the soul. General hygiene issues were discussed. All in all the pupils were the richer for all these activities.

Pupil of the Week In mid-2008, after seven years of competing in motocross, Ivan Torlage, a Grade 9 pupil, decided to ditch the dirt track and take on the tarmac instead. He began competing in the 125 GP Class Circuit racing and is also currently riding in the 150 Cup. Ivan’s parents say he has taken to the sport like a duck to water. He is competing in the Northern Championships which has the fastest riders in the country. He is currently in second place with two events to go. His highlights so far this year include his finishing 2nd at Kyalami and beating Mathew Hoyle, the British 125cc Champion. He also holds two wins at Phakisa and holds the lap record at Zwartkops International Racetrack for the 150 Cup class. Ivan is passionate about motor sport and has been racing since the age of five. We’ll be keeping an eye on Ivan.

TEXTBOOKS – Parents, please note…

St Dominic’s College no longer supplies textbooks through our own bookshop. The ordering of books is to be made through other suppliers. Below are two suggested suppliers :

Option 1 : Mrs Daly – this supplier has all the booklists and you can contact her directly (see below). Option 2 : Order via the website Kalahari.net – you will need to use the attached booklist for Kalahari.net as they will require more information eg ISBN numbers or authors and correct Editions to ensure you order the correct books. The address is www.kalahari.net/books Option 3 : You may opt to find a supplier of your own.

Some ISBN numbers have not yet been supplied and we will update the lists regularly as the

information is received from the publishers.

Should you wish to download the HIGH SCHOOL booklist via the sms system directly to your email, simply type an sms into your cell phone as shown below :

BOARDER PARENT CONTACT SESSIONS

Mr de Wit and Mrs Diesel recently visited parents of our boarder children. These visits are done annually and serve to inform the parents of developments at the school, discuss boarding school issues and matters of concern, discuss their children’s academic progress, and in general serves to develop and nurture the relationships between our parents and the school. Currently we accommodate children in our boarding house from Lesotho and Botswana. The popularity of our boarding house is growing and this year we have been overwhelmed with applications for new students. It has necessitated that a section of the boarding house (which is currently not in use) be refurbished to house an additional twelve girls. When enquiring why new applicants select St Dominic’s College as an option for boarding, four points always seem to stand out :

a) Referral by existing parents – which means that our current parents are more than satisfied with the quality of service and care that their children receive in terms of their school life, as well as life in the boarding house – our own parents are therefore some of our best marketers!

b) Fee structure – in comparison to other independent schools in South Africa, our fee structure is certainly highly competitive.

c) Transportation of children to and from the boarder posts at the beginning and end of each term – this holds tremendous advantages for our parents.

d) Quality and Pride – parents who visit the school are always impressed with our service, friendliness of our staff and our commitment to their child’s welfare.

It serves once again to confirm that St Dominic’s College is a leader in the field of Independent Education.

SPECIAL SOUTH AFRICANS

Those who have inspired us. Those who have defined us. Those who have shown us our common humanity.

Enoch Mankayi Sontonga circa 1873 - 18 April 1905

A new weekly feature Taken from

www.zar.co.za

The humble and obscure life of Enoch Sontonga is an antithesis of the dreams he inspired in generations of Africans through his famous composition "Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika". Details of his short life are hard to come by. He was born in Uitenhage (Eastern Cape), in about 1873. Trained as a teacher at the Lovedale Institution, he was sent to a Methodist Mission school in Nancefield, near Johannesburg. He married Diana Mgqibisa, the daughter of a prominent minister in the African Methodist Episcopal Church and had one son. A choirmaster and photographer, he wrote the first verse and chorus of "Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika" when he was 24 (1897), one of many songs he wrote for his pupils. Later the same year, he composed the music. The song is a prayer for God's blessing on the land and all its people. Sontonga's choir sang the song around Johannesburg and KwaZulu-Natal, and other choirs followed them. It was first sung in public in 1899 at the ordination of Rev Boweni, a Shangaan Methodist Minister. Most of Sontonga's songs were sad, witnessing the suffering of African people in Johannesburg, but they were so popular that after his death choirs used to borrow them from his wife. According to sources, she eventually sold the rights to the song for a mere sixpence. She died in 1929. Sontonga died of unknown causes at the young age of 32, in 1905. He was buried in Braamfontein, Johannesburg and his grave has only recently been discovered after intensive research. This was the announcement of the death of Enoch Sontonga:

Translation of original Xhosa item in the newspaper "Imvo Zabantsundu", dated 27 June 1905 :SONTONGA, E. Johannesburg. On 18 April 1905 ENOCH M. SONTONGA passed away. He was not sick this time. He, however, suffered at times from stomach ache to the extent that he would predict that these were his last days on this earth. One Sunday he requested to take a photograph of his wife. The wife refused because she was suffering a toothache that particular day. This young man was a composer for the Church of Rev. P.J.

Mzimba at one location in Johannesburg. He was also a photographer and a lay preacher. He is survived by his wife and one child. He was born in Uitenhage and was 33 years old.

Sontonga wrote his songs down in an exercise book, which was lent out to other choirmasters and eventually became the property of a family member, Boxing Granny. She never missed a boxing match in Soweto, hence the nickname. She died at about the time Sontonga's grave was declared a heritage site in 1996, but the book was never found. Solomon Plaatje, one of South Africa's greatest writers and a founding member of the ANC, was the first to have the song recorded, accompanied by Sylvia Colenso on the piano. This was on 16 October 1923, in London. In 1925 the ANC adopted the song as the closing anthem for their meetings. In 1927 seven additional Xhosa stanzas were added by Samuel Mqhayi, a poet. The song was published in a local newspaper in the same year, and was included in the Presbyterian Xhosa hymn book "Ingwade Yama-culo Ase-rabe" in 1929. A Sesotho version was published in 1942 by Moses Mphahlele. The Rev J L Dube's Ohlange Zulu Choir popularised "Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika" at concerts in Johannesburg, and it became a popular church hymn that was also adopted as the anthem at political meetings. For decades Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika was regarded as the national anthem of South Africa by the oppressed and it was always sung as an act of defiance against the apartheid regime. There are no standard versions or translations of "Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika" so the words vary from place to place and from occasion to occasion. Generally the first stanza is sung in Xhosa or Zulu, followed by the Sesotho version. The song spread beyond the borders of South Africa and has been translated and adapted into a number of other languages. It is still the national anthem of Tanzania and Zambia and has also been sung in Zimbabwe and Namibia for many years. A proclamation issued by the State President on 20 April 1994 stipulated that both "Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika" and "Die Stem" (the Call of South Africa), written by Afrikaans poet CJ Langenhoven in 1918, would be the national anthems of South Africa. In 1996 a shortened, combined version of the two anthems was released as the new National Anthem. On 18 April, 2005 Minister of Arts and Culture, Pallo Jordan said at the unveiling of the Enoch Sontonga Memorial: "There is a saying that goes 'those whom the gods love died young' - Sontonga was one of those. His work will be immortalised as South Africa's and other African countries' national anthems."And so today, we celebrate Enoch Sontonga's gift to us, a heroic message of calm, written in the eye of the storm. Today it forms part of South Africa's national identity; and along with "Die Stem", it brings together all the different strands of the country's past in a union of inclusiveness, symbolizing the oneness of South Africa's people.

Nkosi sikelel' iAfrika Nkosi sikelel' iAfrika
