A Day in the Life of...I wish you could take a day off work to become at student again, and at St. Dominic’s of course. Those of us attending the recent Year 12 Performance of ‘Picnic at Hanging Rock’ were impressed by the high standard and compelling nature of this production. Congratulations to Year 12 Drama students and their Director Victoria Sayner. And still to come are the SDPC Music Concert and the Catholic Schools Music Festival.

TransitionsMonday Night’s Parent Teacher Interviews were, once again, well supported. Tomorrow those of you who have children in Years 10 and 11 will be here for Subject Selection Day. The conversations you have in this three-way discussion are important, and involve listening to the advice which each party can offer as curriculum choices offering the best post school pathways are discussed.

Book Week celebrations culminated with our parade in the gym on Friday. We thank Mrs White for all the organising

that goes into planning and preparing for Book Week. Our Year 6 hosts for the parade Isabella Bondza and Cecilia Nguyen did a great job. We would also like to thank all our students and parents for making the effort to get dressed up. There were many creative outfits and the girls obviously enjoyed the day.

Father’s Day Mass: The Reception Class will host the Chapel Mass for Father’s Day this Friday, 31st August. Students need to be seated in the chapel by 8.05am as Mass commences at 8:15. Reception students will need to wear their sport uniform. All families are very welcome to come and to stay for a cup of tea or coffee after the mass.

District Athletics Year 4-7: Results and photos will appear in next week’s Bulletin due to event being held on Tuesday.

Outdoor Kitchen In the Junior Primary Play SpaceWe h a ve b e e n v e r y fortunate to have our Maintenance man, Mr Gavin Reeve, put together our fabulous new outdoor kitchen. It is very popular with all ages and many gourmet ‘sand meals’ have been lovingly prepared by the Junior Primary students.

Welcome!NEW ADDITIONS TO OUR FAMILIES

Book Week Book Swap in the Primary School

Too many cooks spoil the broth. The Year 5s enjoyed the new outdoor kitchen in the JP area while the R-2s were away...

In celebration of Science Week each student in Year 2 has presented to the class an experiment they have trialled at home. Our budding chemists and engineers have expertly demonstrated erupting volcanoes, mixtures that blow up balloons, how to make slime and many more.

YEAR 2

I dipped wires into salt water and it made a light turn on. It was fun to connect the electricity and see my experiment work. - By VuiI added water to six different coloured M&Ms sitting in a dish. We watched the water change colour and then the M&M writing on the top of the lollies came off and rose

to the top of the water. This is because the writing is made from edible paper. - By Isabella It took two weeks to make the crystal grow. My first one failed but the blue crystal was a spectacular success. I love growing crystals - By LiliaI put in water, then food colouring and then after that I put in cooking oil. The next thing was to add an ALKA_SELTZER tablet which made the bubble come up to make a Lava Lamp. My Dad thought of this experiment and I loved demonstrating it to the class. - By Sophie

In and around the classrooms:

To celebrate Book Week the Year 4 Class wrote book recommendations for a display in the Pegi Williams Bookshop in Walkerville. They'll be on display for another week, so if you're looking for a good book, pop in and check out our special treasures.

Book Week ‘Find Your Treasure’Treasures were discovered in abundance during the 2018 Book Week celebration. The theme ‘Find Your Treasure’ provided a fun and inspiring backdrop to highlight the value of books and reading.

Students enjoyed many activities such as the Library Treasure Hunt, Write a Book in a Day challenge, a visit by literature specialist Rebecca Bird, the Year 8 Book Swap fundraiser for The Kids’ Cancer Project and of course, the Dress Up Parade.

The Year 6 Readers’ Cup final was a tightly contested event with the talent and suspense on display worthy of a Harry Potter Quidditch game!

Book Week continues this week with a full day visit by talented South Australian author Phil Cummings on Friday, and the last chance to enter the Big Book of Treasure Quotes Competition.

Reading truly does offer a world full of possibilities!

Write a Book in a DayOn Thursday the 23rd of August two St Dominic’s Priory College teams consisting of Year 8 and Year 9 students had a challenge to Write a Book in a Day for The Kids’ Cancer Project. Each team was given a list with different characters, random words and scenes that had to be included. SDPC 1 wrote about an electrician on a construction site who was zapped into a magical realm with an evil psychic and a trustworthy side-kick, Carlos the donkey. SDPC 2 wrote about two sisters, Rori, the brave sister and Riley, the scared one.

It was great to be involved in the activity because it was for a good cause. We raised over $400 for the Kids Cancer Project through activities held at school. We’d like to thank our sponsors who added to our totals. It was a great opportunity to improve our team building and writing skills. We were able to learn new techniques in both writing and illustrating. We would also like to thank all the teachers who helped supervise us on the day.

Nicoletta, Alana and Sofia

The two groups used their creative skills to come up with two very different stories. One adventure

fantasy and the other a mystery adventure. Which one would you read?

Dear Parents / GuardiansMany thanks to those families who have already signed up to a parent roster for the 2018 Fete & Auction.

However, at time of printing, ALL rosters are undersubscribed and in vital need of more help.

Sent to registered parent e-mail address/es - or via eldest daughters - was the link to the Online Roster, which has also been published on the front page of each Bulletin over the past few weeks and here below:

https://stdo.ms/Fete18This online roster is a particularly convenient means for parents to manage their own involvement.

It can be accessed via any internet-enabled device, be it a computer, smartphone or tablet.

The annual Fete & Auction persists as the largest fundraiser on the Parents & Friends’ Calendar, amounting to over 70% of its annual figures. Please help make 2018’s efforts the best yet by giving just two hours of your time.

Please do not hesitate to make contact with the College Office via (08) 8267 3818 if you have any queries.

With thanks,

Sr Jillian Havey, Principal

Year 8 Vinnie’s SleepoutOn Friday the 17th of August, Nicoletta Mihelios and Ella Wood from Year 8 hosted a Sleepout with support from Ms. Reid and Miss Spagnuolo. The Sleepout’s purpose was to raise awareness about homelessness in South Australia.

Shanna Le, an Old Scholar, came at the start of the night to talk about homelessness and how God wants everyone to be equally treated. After that, we started package making. Each girl brought as many cans as they could, which they then used to create a package. The teams were judged on presentation, and overall Group 2 won for their creativity. We watched “Sleeping Rough,” which was a documentary that explained homelessness in a snap shot. One of the most intriguing realities is that 1 in every 200 people are homeless in Australia.

For dinner, Ella’s mum Belinda, and Nicoletta’s mum Sophie, donated soup. This was eaten with a piece of bread. Ms Noujaim donated money which was used to purchase a dessert and breakfast. Before the night was over the girls had the choice to write a reflection or a story on a fictional homeless character. One scenario was a 16-year-old boy leaving home because of his drunk dad. Emma wrote “I had no money or savings, scavenging for food out of restaurant bins. I was getting skinnier by the day.” During the reflections, they also wrote about what they have learnt. For example, Amelia McAvaney said that “most homeless people in Australia are not all on drugs, and I think we need to erase this stereo-type.” Overall this was an eye-opening experience and we have all taken information from this night.

Bastille Day Celebrations 2018At the start of Term 3 our French classes belatedly celebrated Bastille Day. The students sang both the Australian and French national anthems and then shared French-inspired food. The Year 7s made delicious sorbets in class and one of our Year 9 students even made her own amazing macarons.

Vive la liberté, la fraternité et l’égalité! Vive l’ Australie et vive la France!

French meets Visual Arts! This year to celebrate Bastille Day and the French Impressionist exhibition (which our students visited in Term 2) the S.A. French Teachers’ Association in association with the Smelly Cheese Shop launched an art competition. Students were encouraged to create an original work of art inspired by the works of the French masters.

St Dominic’s had 11 entries from Year 6 to 10 who enthusiastically took up the challenge and produced some beautiful pieces. The winners were announced at the Central Market on Bastille Day during the school holidays and two of our Year 10s were successful. We congratulate Anna Ngo and Adrianne Limgenco who were the finalists in the Year 10 category.

The prize was a cheese-tasting and appreciation afternoon at the Smelly Cheese Shop. In addition, Anna Ngo was named the outright winner for her year level with her painting of a picturesque canal boat in her home-country of Vietnam.

The paintings of all the S.A. winners were on display at the Central Market for a month and then at the Alliance Française. Well done to our talented students!
