Councillor Joan BullerJoan Buller first took office as a Parish Councillor on Monday 16th May 1983, after having spent some years listening and learning about Parish Council work from the public gallery.Throughout the past thirty years and continuing on day by day, Councillor Joan Buller devotes her time and local knowledge to the well-being of her fellow parishioners and is the longest-serving Staplehurst Parish Councillor in living memory. She has worked with 5 different Parish Clerks, 7 Chairmen and 65 Parish Councillor colleagues. Joan continues to be actively involved in a wide variety of local issues and Council projects.

Joan takes particular care to ensure planning applications are considered thoroughly. Joan strives also to make Staplehurst a litter-free area through positive action. She is often seen early in the mornings with her litter picker and black sack cleansing the High Street of litter dropped by careless pedestrians and from passing vehicles. She also helps to organise the Village Clean Up amongst other interests, which now encompass the Rural Settlement Group, Emergency Help Team, Speed Watch and Community Hub, to name but a few. From her vast local knowledge and experience, Joan mentors new Councillors but is also very happy to listen to parishioners’ views and help where she can. Joan has said she loves being part of Staplehurst’ s welcoming, friendly and caring community and her actions certainly reflect that worthy ethos.Thank you, Joan and heartfelt congratulations on your 30 year milestone on behalf of Staplehurst.

What a difference a year makes!

Writing this on 3rd June 2013 bathed in glorious sunshine, it seems such a short time ago we came together to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee – huddled under brollies in a torrential downpour!

As a result of feedback about the two evening concerts last June we’ve booked a fantastic act to follow the fete into the evening, generously sponsored by The Kings Head.

As you’re reading this you’ll realise we’ve ‘upped our game’ in terms of this programme. Last year we aimed to give every household a Jubilee event guide and decided this is a practice we should like to repeat. In the past we’ve pounded the streets selling the programmes door to door and then again on the entrances to Surrenden Field on the actual day. In a departure from this, every household in the Parish should receive this booklet free of charge and entry to the fete will be free although you might encounter the odd donation bucket for loose change throughout the day!

The incredible generosity of local businesses that are represented in this booklet is what enables the event to take place. We are grateful to Sainsburys for their generous sponsorship of the day and to all the stallholders, helpers and contractors for their support too. Year on year there seems to be more demands on the committee’s time so much so that we couldn’t even arrange a new photo! If you enjoy what we do and would like to join us or can help on the day please let us know.

We’ve ordered sunshine this year so very much look forward to welcoming everyone to a great day and evening.

Sam BeedleSince the age of four, Sam Beedle, the Kent magician has been studying and perfecting the craft of magic.

Growing up in Kent, Sam was able to develop his performance style in a variety of different venues and situations including working on his local high street performing to passers by earning his living through the coins and notes dropped into his hat. Who said students couldn’t gain a wage without a bar or student loan?Sam enjoys performing as many different styles of magic as possible from the close-up magic that takes place right in front of your eyes to stage illusions that thrill larger audiences. This Kent magician has also travelled around Europe

performing in Spain, Ireland, France and managed to secure a two month contract touring Scotland with his unique gothic style show, ‘Magic and Mind Play’.Sam will be doing 2 shows for us, one for children, and the second for families.

The Swinging 60’sProbably the most authentic sixties band performing today.

A deep desire to make people happy is why Leah, Dave and Andy always give 100% of themselves whenever they perform. ‘It’s not just a performance, it’s an experience, a nostalgic journey to a time when songs had a beat and proper words’ says Andy. He adds, ‘within minutes the audience is totally immersed in the music and that’s just great for us, it somehow repays the years of dedication’. The likeness of their covers to the original is uncannily accurate. Their passion and showmanship that is so evident during a performance is due in no small part to the fact that founder members Dave Offredi and Andy Ferguson have been best mates since the age of eleven. It was whilst watching an open air concert by the Rock-a-beats on Tankerton Slopes they first met. Growing up in the sixties and having been inspired by the Rock-a beat’s lead guitarist, Pip Hadler they went on to become professional musicians and have performed for audiences throughout the UK and Europe. The band spend every spare moment they have rehearsing in order to perfect their harmonies, which is a recognisable

key element of 60s tracks. Leah has infused some colour into the band encouragoing Andy and Dave to create a memorable image. There’s absolutely no doubt the band are totally dedicated to the music of the decade having around 2000 songs in their repertoire. Ask for a request and the chances are you’ll get it!

Memorial Day - Sunday 30th June Spitfire Mark 9TA805

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Airforce operating from Staplehurst Advanced Landing Ground [ALG]. Three squadrons [401, 411 & 412] flew the Spitfire MkVb.

In the past, the RCAF activity in 1943 has been incorrectly referred to as ‘126 Wing’. Although the ALG was called 126 Airfield, the term ‘126 Wing’ did not come into being until the three squadrons had left Staplehurst for Biggin Hill. As a community we’ve marked the construction and unveiling of a permanent memorial at Chickenden Farm since 2010 – the location of the 400-acre former fighter airfield. This year a ceremony will be held at the memorial on Sunday 30th June to remember the Canadian airmen who served in Staplehurst seventy years ago. The USAAF airmen of the 363rd Fighter Group who flew from the ALG in 1944 will also be remembered. Everyone is very welcome to attend this event and there is ample parking at Chickenden Farm. When we look back at the last three Memorial Days there have been some incredibly emotional moments that have created deep personal memories. This year promises one of the best Spitfire displays ever witnessed as the location is over open farmland. Do have your camera ready! The occasion will commence at 2.00pm with the solo Spitfire display. This has been made possible by the incredible generosity of Tesco Stores Ltd. The service will be conducted by the Revd. Andrew Mills with music provided by the Salvation Army Band from Maidstone. Col. Bland will represent the Royal Canadian Airforce by kind permission of the Canadian Embassy. Also in attendance will be 106 Yeomanry Regt. Royal Artillery [R.A.] by kind permission from Col. Bob Christopher RA.(CVHQ WOOLWICH). The Royal Artillery have been invited to represent their involvement with Staplehurst at Loos Barracks, now the Jubilee Playing Field in Headcorn Road. The R.A. contributed to the defence of the ALG at Chickenden Farm. A gathering of period military vehicles together with a number of re-enactors will again be in attendance. Their sterling efforts are truly appreciated in these times of escalating fuel costs.

SPITFIRE MARK 9 TA805Known as ‘The Kent Spitfire’ andchristened ‘Spirit of Kent’, it was out of Castle Bromwich as part ofan order for 1,844 Mark 9s in April 1944

First allocated to No. 39 MU, its first operationalposting was to No. 183 Squadron based at Chilbolton.Moving to No. 234 Squadron at Bentwaters in August 1944,the end of the war saw it placed in storage before being soldto the South African Air Force. It sailed aboard the ‘SS Clan McLeod’ in April 1949 and became part of the defence force of South Africa. When retired it was sold to a metal dealer and lay for many months becoming more and more derelict. The remains were returned to the UK in 1989 and the aircraft was rebuilt at Airframe Assemblies at Sandown Airport on the Isle of Wight. In 1997 the aircraft was acquired by airline pilot Peter Monk who named it ‘Spirit of Kent’. Serialised TA805 (G-PMNF), the aircraft is the flagship of the Biggin Hill Heritage Hangar and flies in memory of No. 131 (County of Kent) Fighter Squadron, a wartime squadron that was purchased with money donations sent in by the good people of Kent. The commanding officers aircraft was always named ‘Spirit of Kent’ with the rest of the squadron having the name of a Kent town emblazoned on the fuselage just below the cockpit. Kent was the only county during wartime to have its own squadron, a pattern that continues today as Kent is the only county in the UK to have its own Spitfire. Today it appears in D-Day markings as Peter takes the aircraft over to the D-Day beaches each year as his personal tribute to the veterans who landed on June 6, 1944. The aircraft is also used to educate the young people of the county when covering the history of the Battle of Britain and after.

With thanks to the Staplehurst Carnival & Fete Committee for allowing us to publish this forthcoming community event in the programme.

We want everybody to have enjoyable day and want to point out that gazebos and barbeques - including disposable barbeques - are not permitted on the event field.

Garden chairs and blankets are of course welcome.

The Parish Council and the Carnival & Fete Committee would like to stress the event field will be used by many, especially children on the 29th June. We expect the grass

to be used for sitting during the evening concert. We therefore urge dog walkers to act responsibly and clean up should their dogs foul the field or perimeter verges.
