First Reading: Isaiah 50:4-7 Isaiah describes an individual who had been taught by God to reach out to others. He also describes this individual's willingness to be beaten and spit upon, secure that with God's help, he will not be disgraced. Second Reading: Philippians 2:6-11 Paul discusses how Jesus did not declare equality with God, but took on human form. He humbled himself enough to accept dying on the cross. God in turn exalted him and wants us to respect Jesus' name and worship him. Gospel: Luke 22:14—23:56 Luke gives a detailed account of Jesus' last supper with the apostles, where Jesus tells them he will soon suffer in fulfillment of God's will. Then Jesus prayed that he might be spared if it suited God's will. After Judas betrayed Je-sus, he was arrested. Although Pilate did not think Jesus was guilty of a crime, he gave in to the will of the people, and sentenced Jesus to death on a cross. Then Jesus was crucified and his body laid in a new tomb.

Pastor’s Corner March 20th, 2016 Passion Sunday, it is the beginning of Holy Week. Each year it reminds us what Jesus did for us. The events of the week leading us towards Holy Thursday where he shared his last meal with his followers and then was be-trayed by one of them in order that he would obey his Fathers commands. He was judged quickly and sen-

tenced to suffer and death. His friends denied knowing him after they said they would follow him. His ministry was fulfilling, but was also against the law, this allowed men to fear him; their actions were to destroy him.

Were you there?? Do we go through life as one of the many characters that played out Christ last few days?

Jesus never gave up HOPE, that is what he teaches us in our darkest hours. Power was everything at this time however, Jesus mission and message is to be a servant, he would get his Glory once the acts over the next several days have been completed, and ultimately cause his death. During this time Jesus continues to teach and his emphasis is on leadership. He reminds them they must travel and continue to spread THE WORD. He prepares them that they will be challenged. The same way he prepares us. Let’s take this Holy Week and remind ourselves why we celebrate Easter, (perhaps walk through the Stations of the Cross and re-flect on each action) go through the many challenges that Christ did during his darkest hours, how he overcame the cruelty, the be-trayal, the brutality, and yes even death, death by the Cross. Although Jesus appeared weak, his Glory will come! He never gave up HOPE!

Good Friday Collection Christian from around the world are united in a special way during Lent, Holy Week and Easter. Our hearts, minds and prayers are especially aware of the Holy Land. Our parish, once a year on Good Friday is called on to support Christians in the Holy Land, many of which look for this support for their lives. The Good Friday Collection is requested by the Holy Father to help Fran-ciscans and others with housing, and feeding the poor, providing religious formation and education, maintaining shrines and parishes and conducting pastoral ministry.

Youth Ministry would like to invite youth in 8th- 12th grades, to join. The sessions are held Wednesday nights, 7:30pm in the lower level of the church.

Want to get closer to God? Lenten season gives us many opportunities to do so.

To fully understand what Christ did for us, please pray while doing the Stations of the Cross every Friday during lent after the 12:05 Mass. Monday Tuesday and Wednesday of Holy Week and 2PM on Good Friday

The obligations that you should keep in mind during our Lenten season; fasting, alms giving, abstinence, Penance and prayer.

2016 Archdiocesan Lenten Observations

Fasting and Abstinence

1) The days of both Fast and Abstinence during Lent are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. The other Fridays of Lent are days of Abstinence.

2) On a day of Fast, only one (1) full meal is permitted. Those between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast.

3) On a day of Abstinence, no meat may be eaten. Those who have reached the age of 14 are obliged by the law of abstinence.

4) The obligation to observe the laws of Fast and Abstinence “Substantially”, or as a whole, is a serious obligation.

5) The Fridays of the year, outside of Lent, are designed as days of penance, but each individual may substitute for the traditional abstinence from meat some other practice of voluntary self-denial as penance.

6) The time for fulfilling the Paschal Precept (Easter Duty*) extends from the First Sunday of Lent, February 14th 2015 to The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, May 22nd, 2015.

*Canon920,1. All the faithful, after they have been initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, are bound by the obligation of receiving Com-munion at least once a year.

Social Concerns: Thanks to all who made donations to St Elizabeth’s Bridges Program. The following items were distributed at the Blessed Sacrament of Friary; 60 toiletry bags for women, 50 for men, the rest left to the Friars for help. In addition 15 grocery bags were given. The next run will be on April 16th and 17th and the Samaritan Outreach Services in Newark will benefit On March 14th 15 boxes of food was donated to L.I.N.C.S in Linden.

the paschal candle The Paschal Candle

The Paschal Candle represents Christ, the Light of the World. The candle is made with pure beeswax which represents the sinless Christ who was formed in the womb of His Mother. During the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday night, the priest or deacon carries The Paschal Candle in procession into the dark church. A new fire, symbolizing our eternal life in Christ, is kindled- which lights the candle.
