W hat wonders the Lord can do! A tender shoot from a cedar becomes the tallest tree on the

mountain. Seed scattered on the earth yields fruit of its own accord. A tiny mustard seed grows into a huge shrub. What’s more, in each case the fruit of God’s work extends its blessings to others. The majestic cedar in Ezekiel’s story provides shade and shelter for every kind of bird. The sower of the seed harvests the fruit of the untended plants. The mustard plant yields pods filled with seeds that add flavor to food. But these are all parables. Each image used by Ezekiel and Mark describes something else. Because the Israelites were in exile at that time, Ezekiel needed them to trust that God had not abandoned them. The tender shoot from the crown of the old tree suggests a future king from the linage of David, himself the youngest son of Jesse. The two parables of Jesus in today’s passage from Mark explicitly connect the stories to the kingdom of God. Like the fledgling Christian community in the time of Mark and Paul, the kingdom of God starts out tiny and seemingly insignificant. But if a small shoot can grow into a majestic cedar, if a tiny mustard seed can grow into a large plant, if a microscopic sperm and egg can grow into a human person, so much so can the kingdom of God be built up into a whole world as one. How can you help build up the kingdom of God in the world? —We Celebrate Worship Resource, Vol. 43, No. 2

—We Celebrate Worship Resource, Vol. 43, No. 2

EL PROGRAMA “CHANGE FOR EL PROGRAMA “CHANGE FOR CHANGE” REGRESARÁCHANGE” REGRESARÁ ¡El programa “Change for Change” regresará!

CHANGE FOR CHANGE IS CHANGE FOR CHANGE IS

COMING BACK!COMING BACK! What is Change for Change? It was a program that was started in February 2004. At that time, St. Francis was in dire need of extra money. We were focusing on paying off the church debt. In the meantime, there were repairs and replacement of equipment that needed immediate attention. Change for Change was the answer. Placed in the Narthex was a large JAR with the inscription Change for Change. We asked Parishioners to drop in their extra change. The extra change added up quickly, with this money we were able to install Handicap equipment, paint, maintain landscaping and get new carpeting in the Church. Once again, we are in need of extra money. We are reinstating Change for Change on July 1, 2018. When you see the JAR, simply drop in your extra change. Thank you for your support. Every little bit makes a BIG difference!

MARK YOUR CALENDAR! MARK YOUR CALENDAR! Coming this FALL!!! Two great events that you won’t want to miss. First, we will have Santa’s Workshop on November 25th. Second, you are invited to the Pastor’s Christmas Party on December 2nd from 5:00pm to 9:00pm at the Apopka Community Center. Catered by Carrabba’s Italian Grill! Keep posted for more details.

QUINCEAÑERAQUINCEAÑERA

by Fr. Paul Turner

Quinceañera is a Mexican celebration of a young woman’s 15th birthday. It began as a simple ceremony signaling one’s public acceptance of the responsibilities for womanhood. The Catholic Church has adapted it to celebrate a young woman’s public profession of faith and readiness to accept the challenges of the church’s mission to family and community. The Quinceañera is still an important ceremony in Latino communities because it affirms their rich cultural identity as Catholics, celebrates the handing down of faith to a new generation, extols the sacred role of women as leaders of faith, accents the gifts of women in society, and strengthens the bonds of family. Godparents are an integral part of the Quinceañera. Beautiful celebrations of the Quinceañera inspire the faithful. To prepare for the event, the youth may take a retreat to reflect on the ceremony and to prepare to reaffirm their faith. They may also celebrate reconciliation. The young women may serve the poor or perform another community service. The Quinceañera may take place at a parish Mass for several young people at a time. During the ceremony, parents may speak their gratitude to God, and those turning 15 may renew their baptismal promises, proclaim their commitment, and receive the blessing of family, church, and community. The ceremony has been adapted by various Latino communities, some non-Latino communities, and even by some young men.

Copyright © 2000 Resource Publications, Inc.
