Views from Fr. Larry Pichard, Pastor

We used to celebrate the Feast of the Ascension on the 40th day after Easter, and that would always be a Thursday. Because many people found it difficult to attend a Holyday of Obligation during the week, in 1999 the Bishops of the United States made the decision to transfer this feast to the following Sunday so that all parishioners could be free to honor this great feast. So, next Thursday we will not be celebrating the Feast of the Ascension of Jesus into heaven. We will do so next Sunday, May 8. On May 8 we celebrate another wonderful feast, not a religious feast but the civic feast of Mother’s Day. During all Masses, we will be blessing all mothers on that day and remembering them in a special way with the intention envelopes that you should present to us before next Sunday. Also next Sunday our special collection will be dedicated to raising funds for Catholic Communications. It has always amazed me how so many Protestants and Evangelicals are able to raise so much money to sponsor many programs on TV and radio as they seek to evangelize. We Catholics, not so much. What is wrong with this picture? We have the greatest Faith on earth, and so we Catholics really need to do a better job of transmitting the revelation of Jesus to the world. I ask myself the question: “What would St. Paul do?” I think he would be the first to head to the airways to proclaim the message of Jesus. He certainly used the medium of letters, probably dozens of them, to explain to the people of his day the love of Jesus and his great teachings. So, next Sunday, think big and make a nice donation so that we Catholics may have a better opportunity to use the media to spread our Faith!

Visiones del Párroco, Pbro. Larry Pichard
