Dear Parish Family,
Last week in my homily I made a plea for a
return to the sacrament of confession. I want to
help promote a healthy participation and a
greater appreciation of this beautiful sacrament of
God’s love and mercy. If you have any feedback
on whether the current Saturday confession time
(3:15-3:45pm) is feasible, I would be most
grateful. I have proposed the possibility of
moving the Saturday confession time to after the
4pm Mass and adding two additional Sunday
times (7:30-7:50am & 10:30-10:50am) before each
of the Masses at 8am & 11am. I welcome your
thoughts!
I recently had some questions about why we use
Latin during the Mass and Eucharistic adoration.
This is a great question. For centuries, Latin has
always been known as the official language of the
Roman Catholic Church for a few reasons. First,
just as the Church is by nature “catholic” (which
means universal) the Latin language is universal
because it doesn’t belong to one particular
country or region anymore. Second, Latin is such
a precise language that it leaves very little room
for ambiguity. That’s why the Church’s official
documents are always first released in Latin.
Third, when sung it has a beauty and elegance
that appeal to many because it can help lift our
minds and hearts in prayer to God.
For centuries, the entire Mass used to be said in
Latin. Although now it is mostly in English, we
preserve some hymns and Mass parts in Latin to
preserve the rich heritage that nourished the
spiritual lives of so many saints and Catholic
faithful throughout the ages.
